Has Vin Diesel been acting like a huge douche on-set for the past year?

FFN_KM_Furious7_Prem_040115_51698995

To me, Dwayne Johnson’s blind item came out of nowhere. But I’m starting to realize that it came out of nowhere because I tend to tune out gossip about the Fast & Furious franchise. It’s not a judgement on the franchise, really. I mean, I respect what they’re doing, they make a lot of money, they have a multi-racial/multi-ethnic cast and hey, why not? But I just don’t care about it. So I don’t pay attention to the gossip about the franchise. Which is how I missed the fact that Vin Diesel is probably a major douche? Or is The Rock a major douche? One of them is. Or possibly both. Following the “reveal” that The Rock’s “candy ass costar” blind item was about Vin Diesel, apparently the two men had a behind-closed-doors discussion and… nothing was resolved. And Vin left in a hurry, making a speech that included the words “Daddy’s gone.” Sure.

Vin Diesel got the hell out of Dodge … minutes after wrapping his final scene in “Fast 8” … and we’ve learned his feud with The Rock is NOT resolved. Production sources tell TMZ … Vin finished filming his scenes, with The Rock, no less, at 1 AM Wednesday and almost as soon as the director called cut Vin gathered everyone and said he was leaving. During his speech he said, “Daddy’s gone” … Vin thinks of himself as the father figure on set.

Our sources say earlier in the day, Vin confronted Rock over the disparaging comments he made about his male co-stars. Although Rock didn’t name names, we know he was referring to Vin. We’re told Vin went to Rock’s trailer and demanded to know why he was talking trash. The 2 spoke privately inside but we’re told they did not squash their beef. One source intimately familiar with the actors tells us it’s all about big egos.

As for Vin, he didn’t leave anyone high and dry. We’re told after shooting his last scene the studio cleared him to leave. As for The Rock … he shoots his last scene Thursday. The movie is a week away from being fully wrapped.

[From TMZ]

It’s interesting that TMZ notes that Vin “didn’t leave anyone high and dry,” because reportedly that’s been a problem in the past. The Hollywood Reporter claimed last year that Vin held up the production on Furious 7 all the time, and that Vin “proved extraordinarily difficult, questioning even small details on elaborate action sequences, often holding up the complex production.” THR said that Vin was the reason why director James Wan opted out of directing Furious 8. Page Six also noted some additional reports of Vin’s bad attitude, with a source claiming that during Furious 7, “Vin spent a whole day in his trailer one day. The next day, they waited four hours for him. He called a meeting [May 28] of studio execs to his trailer for two-and-a-half hours to say, ‘What the f— am I doing here?’” Other sources claim this is a consistent issue with Vin, that he’s constantly “acting like a diva.”

So… does that mean The Rock was completely justified in calling out Vin in a blind item? I don’t know. I have to think that for Dwayne to do that, it must have been pretty bad/frustrating.

It’s so funny that all of this is coming out now. I recently watched Furious 7 and just started laughing hysterically when someone decided to put Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, and the The Rock in one movie. I’m surprised any of them can take themselves seriously on set with that sort of cast.

    • Lisa says:

Haha it’s such silly fun. I mean people outrun airplanes at some point. It’s Sharknado with cars and I keep watching, just for the so bad it’s good element. I wouldn’t say we need more entertainment like that, but I like that we have the option to watch it. 8 seems excessive though. I hope they stop soon, otherwise it will turn into the expendables, with old Rock and old XXX breaking hips and racing their old people scooters around Walmart. – wait, do that!

      • HH says:

It is mindless fun. Midway through, I was just like “how many times can a car go airborne in one film”… They didn’t let me down

      • C says:

Sharknado with cars….best comment ever! Lmao

      • Bonster says:

You’re so right. It’s time for a bangin’ scooters movie. It could be this decade’s Snakes on a Plane.

    • Roller74 says:

      Hahahaha, so true, well said!

  2. Janet R says:

I love the Rock. His good nature comes across in anything he’s done or said. I have to believe he was pushed pretty hard to say anything.

    • tegteg says:

Agreed. Everything I’ve read about him indicates he’s easy going, humble, hardworking, and a general pleasure to work with. Vin must’ve been acting like a real a$$

    • Looty says:

I trust the rock’s judgment, if he thought it was bad enough to call out I believe it was. But doing it blind caused suspicion to fall on some innocent people.

    • LadyMTL says:

I’ve been a big fan of his since his early WWE days (back when he was Rocky Maivia, heh) but at the same time I don’t think calling out anyone via a blind item on social media was the right thing to do. IDK, to me it’s…beneath him.

Still, at the same time I figure whatever Vin did or said must have been bad for The Rock to do what he did.

      • Lolad says:

Honestly, I think he is not the one adversely affected by vins behavior- he gets paid a lot and will be treated well on set no matter what. But the people will be put out are the crew members in the end and I do think Johnson called him out more for the crew who can’t voice their frustrations than for his own annoyance.

    • Lindsay says:

It was overshadowed by his father’s insanity but Scott Eastwood cryptically referred to it as well. Apparently Vin spending tons of time in his trailer rubbed lots of people the wrong way. I figured it was him because there is a little jab at VD in the Ballers season trailer. Someone comes up to DJ and asks “Hey, aren’t you VD?” DJ shoots back “No I’m bigger and better looking.”

I know it is part of the whole wrestling thing but I wish he hadn’t used the term “candy asses” and hadn’t cast doubt on the rest of the guys. He seems genuinely sweet and lovable so I think something must have happened, he always seems tight with his fellow cast members.

    • wolfie says:

IDK. I kind of side eye it because I remember a little thing from the year 300 came out big. The media was calling Gerard Butler “action star of the year” and the Rock posted a “humorous” video of him having a hissy about it. Somehow I have just gotten a big feeling of ego about him. Just maybe, he came into someone else’s franchise and started acting like he made it a big one. The media has said all of his costars are unhappy with him for handling it this way. Personally I think the blame is probably equal on this one.

      • Bridget says:

So you’re equating The Rock, who has a STELLAR reputation as a nice guy and professional, posting a couple of things on Instagram with someone who has a history of holding the entire production hostage? What they’re talking about Diesel doing is a big deal – every time he has a hissy fit he’s costing everyone money, and keeping everyone else from doing their job. Vin Diesel has had a terrible reputation for years for being a complete pain in the butt. How on earth is that equal blame?

Also, The Rock is from pro wrestling. The dude knows showmanship. Which is part of why he’s got a huge social media profile and following. But him posting a video 10 years ago isn’t evidence of some sort of bad behavior.

      • Loulou says:

That’s the vibe I got when I saw The Rock in that movie. They took a cultish film and plunked down an actor who was a little left field to the concept. VD may be a diva but maybe he was emotionally more attached to the movie. They should stop making them anyway. 7 was already a stretch after the tragedy.

      • Naya says:

There are no good guys here. Both these people are ego maniacs. Vins past offences are well documented so I wont go into them. As for DJ; to up and post something like that on social media when you are two days from wrapping filming and will never have to spend longer than a minute with this guy again, is beyond petty. Also, its being reported that the Rock is throwing this fuss because of production decisions made by Vin, which again is the height of ego. Its basically the most commercially successful actor on set undermining the lead actor/producer over social media. If you have a problem, you deal with it through your agent and the studio not through instagram like a pre teen. These are silly egotistical men, there are no sides to pick here.

    • holly hobby says:

I really don’t think the Rock is the problem here. From what I’ve read about him (I only watched one movie of his – San Andreas which was pretty bad), he’s nothing but gracious and a good guy. I still remember his facebook post of him stopping by and taking a picture with some kids who held a sign asking him to take a picture (it was on a street where he passes by?). That’s pretty neat.

Vin on the other hand, I’ve heard he was difficult.

      • Janet R says:

@ Holly Hobby OMG I LOVED San Andreas! Partly because for some reason I find it’s the end of the world movies cathartic (and only one “good” known character ever dies) and the other is my stress/tension was eased because I just knew The Rock would save everyone!
Am I the only ones who freaks out thinking about my lack of upper arm strength during those scenes where someone is holding on – to the edge of a cliff , etc? I keep thinking that I would last for less than 10 seconds before “Boom” to the bottom I would fall. Unless The Rock was there to rescue me, or Mr. R who would be able to save me too. : )

  3. Mia4S says:

I think people criticizing the Rock are missing something here. The Rock called him out because only he could! Diesel is obviously making life miserable for a lot of people…all of whom could be fired for standing up to him. The Rock wasn’t punching down he was punching at his level. Good for him.

    • littlemissnaughty says:

I was thinking something along those lines as well. Everyone claiming this was so unprofessional would probably not mind their idiot boss being called out in front of everyone by someone on his own level. We all love to pretend that we’re so above it but frankly, I’m not. I treat everyone at work with respect and I’m polite even if others aren’t. Because it’s a workplace, not Disneyland. But when someone in charge acts like an entitled lunatic and makes everyone’s work day miserable? I’m in no position to put a stop to it. So yeah, at some point I want someone on the same level to shut that down. And then I don’t care if it’s behind closed doors, if you’ve pushed me that far you don’t deserve privacy. I highly doubt many people feel differently.

    • MiniMii says:

This makes so much sense. I’m a fan of The Rock, and a lot of that is due to how he presents himself – he never comes across as having an attitude or being full of himself. He’s big on remaining humble & hard working, and I think he got frustrated seeing a bad attitude and arrogance in his coworker – especially as you say littlemissnaughty, as it would have affected so many who had no power to change anything.

    • Bridget says:

Vin’s behavior that’s listed in the article above is really bad. REgularly holding the whole set hostage? Being late or refusing to work is not only disrespectful to all of the people that are there to do their jobs, but it wastes a ton of money (and this is coming from a producer). We look at one Instagram post and feel comfortable calling him unprofessional, and yet give the person that’s actually behaving badly a pass? I don’t get it.

    • MC2 says:

Great point & I agree. I bet VD was making a lot of lives miserable & treating ‘peons’ like crap.

  4. shannon says:

    Um….yes? this is news?

  5. Eternal PMS says:

Just look at that arrogant smirck !! Vin let fame get the better of him – the Rock….rocks!!!

  6. Betti says:

I was one of those who thought it was Scott Eastwood but i had forgotten that Vin was a mega douche (i don’t watch his movies or the FF franchise). I like the Rock and while i think both have ego’s (point me to a celeb that doesn’t), the Rock is the more professional guy and has a very good rep in the industry. Vin has always had a bad one which is why he had to return to the franchise, he wasn’t getting any other work. However for the Rock to publicly say something, means something major went down – come on crew, spill.

    • Ennie says:

In one of CB’s former threads, I think Scott mentions that he tries to learn from every on seer experience, and that in Fast and Furious, he was hanging with the crew when everyone else went to their trailers .I remember that it sounded like he was elevating himself, but probably the environment was not that good, and one of the “divas” , probably Vin, was leading the way to the trailers.
Eastwood did not sound douchey on set to me, he sounded more clueless, not very diplomatic, throwing his costars under the bus a little.

  7. H says:

I’m sorta surprised that this is news. I love Vin and his movies, but he’s been a diva for YEARS on multiple movie sets. I’m Team Rock on this one as it had to be some pretty awful behavior for The Rock to post that blind.

  8. vauvert says:

Normally I would say that no matter what the problems are, the professional thing is to keep it within the group, not post about it on social media. But everything I have heard about the Rock so far has been positive and he seems like a good, down to earth guy who has never before gone off on a rant online. This makes me think that he had tried to solve the issues with Vin privately and gotten nowhere, so finally he took his frustrations to Instagram. Maybe not the best solution, but if Vin is as much of a jerk as it sounds like, then I get it.

  9. Qjoi says:

I was completely unfamiliar with past stories about Vin’s previous on-set behavior, so this is all still a shock to me! Honestly, when it comes down to it I think it just has to do with egos. Vin has been with the franchise from the beginning, I mean essentially it is his franchise. And then you have The Rock, whose character in the film has become a fan favorite, and is an action star in his own right. So, putting these two together I can see how there would be conflict. But like any job, there’s no excuse for unprofessionalism on either side!

  10. Lolamd says:

I am not understanding where he is getting this “divaness” from? I could barely tolerate his character in the last Fast & Furious.

    • FingerBinger says:

The fast and furious films have made alot of money. The xxx films have done well too. Diesel was in 1 of the best films of the 90s saving private Ryan. All that would go to anybody’s head.

    • ria says:

Xxx was one big bang Hit, Fast & Furious is Huge, but what makes Vin A STAR for a lot of fans is RIDDICK. Cult.

  11. AnonDC says:

Everything I have read about the Rock has been that he is a consummate professional. I don’t think I’ve ever heard him complain about a set before, but I definitely heard him speak in a hypothetical way about how he doesn’t like when celebrities act like they’re doing the world a big favor and refuse to sign autographs or promote films because they should be thanking their stars to be where they are.

It must have been really bad for him to do this, but I still don’t think the way he did it was well executed. I do appreciate him sticking up for the production crew though.

  12. Lisa says:

Update from his Instagram: “therockMy FINAL WEEK of shooting #FastAndFurious. There’s no greatness ever achieved alone.. it’s always a team effort. We promised an epic prison break out for you guys and we delivered. HUGE THANK YOU to my ohana (family) stunt coordinator JJ Perry and his bad ass fearless stunt team – as well as my cousin and incredible stunt double @samoanstuntman. Thank you team for the willingness to “die hard” and drop your blood & sweat daily for our movie. #MyStuntBrothers #Loco4Life
You guys reading this know how much I believe in the idea of TEAM EFFORT. That means respecting every person, their time and their value when they step on to my set or partner with our production company. And like with any team – that’s a family – there’s gonna be conflict. Family is gonna have differences of opinion and fundamental core beliefs. To me, conflict can be a good thing, when its followed by great resolution. I was raised on healthy conflict and welcome it. And like any family, we get better from it. At the end of the day me and #F8 co-stars all agree on the most important thing: Delivering an incredible movie to the world.
    #Fast8 #IcemanCometh #FamilyGrowth”

    • Naya says:

Lmao. This so petty. Its like “see mummy. See how nice I am to the little guy on set. I even know their names, mummy. Ask Vinnie if he even knows their names?” So passive aggressive. Next, Vin will post an instagram pic of the crew watching the Olympics at his home. Petty petty men. The only post either of them should make on this situation, is proof of a full and complete reconciliation, otherwise shut up about it.

      • Lolad says:

Actually I know @samoanstuntman, tanoai is a blood cousin so he literally means he is family and always gives shoutouts to him publicly. Dwayne is a good and honest man from the way tanoai describes his cousin- a distant cousin of theirs has a child with special needs and Dwayne, although he doesn’t know this cousin personally, bought the child a very expensive wheelchair when tanoai brought the situation to his attention and has continued to help in other ways for the boy.

        Team Dwayne on this one.

  13. Skins says:

Didn’t Vin spend the entire last movie selling the fact that he and Paul Walker were like the closest friends of all time and like “brothers” etc…to sell the movie when in reality they weren’t? If true, that is beyond lame and I would love the see The Rock squash him like a bug

    • holly hobby says:

Well Vin named his daughter after Paul. Maybe they did make some peace toward the end. Death does put everything in perspective though. I’m not going to knock Vin on that one.

    • Naya says:

I thought they were bffs too. Something about being godfathers to each other kids or something. But I watched a clip of the cast members sitting around a table discussing Paul and the Rock seemed like an outsider rather than part of the group. Tyrese was obnoxious. Luda seemed irritated with Tyrese motor mouth. Vin seemed like the idiot who thinks he is the group leader and verbally reminds everyone that “fact” every few minutes. The girls were almost completely silent and weren’t pretending to have been closer to Paul in order to milk the grief. Honestly, the only person there who seemed truly grieved was Michelle Rodriguez. She was discreetly weeping and only spoke when she was pointedly asked to and you could hear real sadness in her voice.

The comraderie on most of these ensemble movies, from Avengers to this is put on to sell the movie. The majority of these people dont spend time together after shooting. The best you can hope for is that they conduct themselves professionally.

  14. u_wish99@hotmail.com says:

I’ve been struggling with this at work as well.
How do you balance being professional with sticking up for people who can’t stick up for themselves (due to power structures or whatever).

What is the line? What is stirring the pot, and what is causing waves because its the only way to create change?

  15. Bridget says:

The self appointed “Head of the family” thing is so weird. Does Vin realize that he’s just playing a movie role?

  16. Cee says:

I love this franchise. I love cars and ridiculousness but something needs to change because it’s been the same formula every single time.

I can’t believe Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren agreed to this, honestly.

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

Theron and Mirren know the director.Theron worked with him on The Italian Job for example. The paycheck must be interesting and the F&F movies are maybe basic but they use multi-ethnic actors and badass characters for the actresses

    • Bridget says:

Helen Mirren really wanted to do the movie. She loves cars and has said on many occasions that it looked like a lot of fun to be in a F&F movie.

  17. Rebecca says:

Didn’t the Rock mention more than one person? He said ,”Some of the men.” So who are the other men?

  18. wolfie says:

Also in his follow up post, the Rock refers to people coming on “his” set, so I still think it is equal blame.

    • Bridget says:

      That doesn’t make any sense.

    • I Choose Me says:

That stood out to me too.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Vin can be a diva and I think Rock is mostly a caring and loyal guy but he’s also very much an alpha male type and I can see their egos clashing big time.

    • Dlo says:

I think the Rock is a producer as well. Someone please correct me if I am mistaken.

  19. hey-ya says:

….Im a serious fangirl of The Last Witch Hunter cos of the beautiful visuals..but it was a huge dud cos it was Vin fighting an evil lady which just didnt really work…anyway…Vins been really busy…Witch Hunter…FF8…XX whatever…maybe its all too much…3 movies practically together cost TC a lot…maybe Rock should have just sucked it up…

  20. kori says:

Maybe Paul Walker was the glue holding the ‘family’ together. Everyone seemed to love him and he seemed to be the one people called ‘brother’ and whatnot.

  21. Audrey says:

I’m probably off base. But I have to wonder if it’s been difficult to film without paul walker. And maybe that’s why he’s been a pain, he’s struggling a bit emotionally.

I’m a big ole softie though

  22. Lucy says:

While I still have some reservations about the way The Rock handled the situation, I’ve got yet to hear a bad word about him from anyone he has worked with, and I do believe he’s a genuinely good person, so…I guess VD is the one with the problem here?

  23. Jennifer Jones says:

I’ve never read anything negative about The Rock’s disposition onset or anywhere else. He always seems to be gracious with his fans and has spoken positively about his former cast mates. There is quite a bit of negativity floating around about VD (I just cracked myself up there) that, I am inclined to believe and side with Dwayne. #teamrock

  24. Roller74 says:

I’m just happy to finally read about two male A-listers who have beef. It’s really funny!

  25. Original kay says:

Well. I’m a huge Vin fan, started with Pitch Black and hasnt ended.
From reading his Facebook, he seems a genuinely sweet, caring guy. I have a hard time believing he causes such huge problems that the only recourse is a passive aggressive Instagram post.

    Team Diesel

  26. KWM says:

I love that more and more is coming out. And yes it seem Vin was major Diva attitude. refusing to do any start time before 10am. Arriving and hour late to his call times, now mind you he was on set, just wouldn’t come out of his trailer. Sounds like he needs a huge does of reality.

    • Naya says:

Is this news from this set? Coz if so, that guy is dumber than a sack of potatoes. He is a producer meaning he has a financial incentive to not waste the production budget on pointless delays.

  27. LadyLoo says:

Has Vin Diesel been acting like a douche for forever?

  28. Mar says:

The Rock probably wasn’t drinking Vin’s cool aid. The rest of the cast has made millions off those movies where Vin is like the captain, so surely they will tolerate his crap. The Rock is a huge star with a big ego and wasn’t having it.

  29. Spike says:

THR article mentioned above is illuminating. VD is one of the producers. The delusional asshat wants to DIRECT the FF8. See, he didn’t like decisions on FF7 and thinks he can do better. He actually references as Paul Walker. Vin, stop invoking the name of a dead co-star. It’s disrespectful and crass.

The article cites that Diesel was such a micromanager that the director had health problems. DJ’s actions should have handled it better, but maybe he felt that it was time to put VD on blast.

  30. lovelife says:

phullease! he cant be Vin Diesel if hes not the Diva!
have you watched his movies? his arrogant personality roles, forever sure gangsta and that permanent smirk makes me feel like wanting to slap his face for a thousand years.
but maybe hes is just doing his toxic method acting?
but anyways, he is Vin Diesel, nuff said.
