Gwen Stefani has had her roots dyed every week for the past 20 years

gwenhair
E! Online has a new interview with Gwen Stefani’s longterm hairstylist, and it goes a long way toward explaining how she maintains her hair and, by extension, her very carefully constructed “look.” Gwen has had her hair dyed every 7-8 days – for the last twenty years. She has a hair guy named Danilo who has worked with her since the 90s and who styles her hair almost daily. Also, do you know how her hair always looks sort of shellacked? Well that isn’t achieved through typical styling products, it’s all layers of conditioner. Danilo deep conditions Gwen’s hair frequently and he’ll tell you about it. He also no longer bleaches her hair. For the past few years he’s been using a formula that lifts the hair instead of damaging it as much as bleach.

“I am very devoted and I have a wonderful collaborator,” Danilo, Pantene’s celebrity hairstylist, shared exclusively with E! News, not at all downplaying the amount of work and skill it takes. “I have a theory and Gwen has a desire. We’re really proud of that and we take it very seriously. The truth is Gwen’s hair has a career too. It has to entertain, it has to perform.”

Indeed, a concept that another iconic blond understood as well. “When I was coming up, I remember I was told that Marilyn would have her hairstylist come touch up her roots every ten days…with a Q-tip. And I remember thinking, ‘Wow that’s a lot!'” Danilo laughs.

And while he doesn’t use cotton swabs, Danilo does stick to an even more stringent touchup schedule, every seven to eight days. Because as he explains: “I know roots are in right now… but I don’t like them on her. I want her to look seamless.”

“We haven’t used bleach since 2004,”Danilo shared. “I developed a high-lift formula that achieves the same effect but saves the quality of her hair. I did a lot of research and really looked at places of origins for blond hair color like Germany and Scandinavia. I’ve spent years finding and testing new lines and technology.”

“Every Monday in the trailer when she’s doing The Voice, I color, wash and treat her hair,” he says, going on to explain that while the color is working on her roots, he coats the rest of her hair with a pack of deep conditioner and leaves it on for around 45 minutes.

But that’s just the first layer of the conditioning. You see, his big secret, the reason he’s been able to keep her healthily platinum-blond for all these years is…

Danilo styles with conditioner.

Yes, you read that right. Every day, every style he creates—from bombshell waves to a retro updo—is created with layers of conditioner.

“She gets multiple types of deep conditioning every day,” he reveals.

That’s your answer: Danilo’s system of basically deep conditioning her hair all day, every day cancels out the damage caused from coloring.

[From E! Online]

E! also has a list of all the products Danilo uses, which are from Pantene because that’s the brand he represents. I definitely agree with him about roots, and I hate that trend of showing roots. (See: Madonna.) I went blonde a few years back but I did it because my roots are gray and the red-blonde color I used to have showed my roots too much. I can only afford to go to the colorist once a month though. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a hairstylist who dyes your hair once a week so you always look polished? That said, Gwen’s hair is so overdone that it looks like doll’s hair, but that seems to be how she likes it and it goes with her painted on makeup. (Although she’s been trying to tone it down lately.) This got me thinking, what does her makeup artist say about her? I found this Instagram rant Gwen’s makeup artist made following her poorly-reviewed Billboard Music Awards look. He defended himself and called her “the ultimate Barbie head- we love experimenting and trying new things; sometimes subtle… and sometimes dramatic.” (I swear I wrote the line about her having doll’s hair before I read that.) Barbie’s hair and makeup are always perfect. This makes so much sense.

Even reading this was exhausting. I don’t know how she is able to do it after two decades.

    • boredblond says:

I know..I couldn’t do it for two months..

    • DahliaDee says:

Well, she doesn’t, does she? She has people who do it for her. She just sits in a chair, reading, scrolling through her phone, chatting etc.

    • Wren says:

Oh, I know! I toyed with the idea of dying my hair but the maintenance has always turned me off.

But for her it’s probably just part of her job. I’m sure we all do tedious maintenance for whatever job we have, and keeping up her signature appearance is part of hers. And it’s not like she’s doing this herself in front of her bathroom mirror. She’s sitting there in a comfy chair while someone else messes with her hair.

    • Tifygodess24 says:

Heck and I thought I was high maintenance for going every 21 days (which gets so old every month)! I no longer feel as bad. Ha! 😂

    • AnnaKist says:

I recently had to be admitted to hospital. While the triage nurse was setting things in motion, my daughter and I complimented her on her beautiful, scarlet hair. It was beautifully cut, full of shine and expertly coloured. My daughter said she’d love to go bright red, but the maintenance is a killer. The nurse said that she and her mum trot off to the hairdresser every week. It’s their thing. Mum gets a set and the nurse gets her roots/touch-up done. Every single week. My very curly hair is lucky to get brushed. Usually I just run my fingers through it. Either way, I mostly look like I’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards…

    • Egla says:

A friend of mine goes to the hair dresser every three days to have her hair styled. Every two weeks to touch up her roots (she keeps hers black while her color is brown). She is addicted. She can’t go without doing it. And her natural hair are amazing if she just let them be. When I ask her why go to all that trouble she just says that’s who she is.
Now imagine your imagine being part of your work too.

      • ohdear says:

my granny went into town from the farm to get her hair set very week. I found it strange, but I think it was her way of maintaining her sanity being a very social, vivacious person and living on a farm with my quiet and introspective grandfather. She’s 94, suffering dementia and has kept those appointments.

  2. nn says:

Usually I find blond hair/brown eyes combo beautiful but with Gwen i think she looks better as a brunette for some reason.

  3. Tig says:

From blue to pink, block dipped or blonde, there isn’t many hairstyles that Gwen hasn’t gone for. One of the reasons her look at the Billboards was so panned was she didn’t look like “herself” or the way people expect her to look. It has to be exhausting to live up to what people think of you based purely on your expected “look”. Give her a freakin’ break!

    • Original T.C. says:

I am a shameless fan of Gwen’s blond do. She does it best IMO. Have always been curious how she kept her hair from falling out though, mystery solved!

  4. Bex says:

Every week? Who has the time and/or inclination to keep that up?

    • JudyK says:

Kim Kardashian certainly has that kind of time…I want to know who’s taking care of her “missing” baby. That aside, I didn’t even know that was Gwen Stefani from the first picture. Rapidly losing interest in Gwen.

    • DahliaDee says:

Someone who has the money and whose career IS 50% looks. Someone who doesn’t actually do it themselves. All she has to do is sit back and relax while other people fuss around her.

      • Lady D says:

        Wigs aren’t an option?

      • Tig says:

it is incredibly misogynist that 50% of her career is looks. It’s not. If you don’t think that almost every other female singer is in the same boat, you are mistaken.

      • Wren says:

While I have always liked Gwen, a significant part of her career IS based on her appearance. Maybe not 50% , but she would not be this widely recognized if she wasn’t so…… recognizable. She’s built an image that goes far beyond her voice and her music, and part of maintaining that image is keeping up her appearance.

      • ohdear says:

maybe “Brand” is a better word than “looks”? Her brand is vey particular, and she’s been blasted for going off brand this year with her clothing. She’s been mostly Ska and now she’s see-through generic, and it isn’t being well-received (and not just because of the sheer style being a terrible fashion choice for anyone).

      • DahliaDee says:

@Tig, I’m not saying it’s OK. But it’s true. Why else would celebrities insure their looks? Why do you think Jennifer Hudson and Jordin Sparks lost weight? Looks, unfortunately, matter in showbiz.

  5. Kaye says:

Exhausting is the word I thought of too. And motivated, I guess.

    • annaloo. says:

But I think it’s worth it! She is a star, after all.. I think he’s right about her hair performing in its own right. Now maybe Gwen should give Goop her stylist’s contact for the conditioning treatment.

  6. QQ says:

Honestly Now I realize it’s not even that her hair is in Bad Condition, is that the color is deeply unflattering and aging and making it look like her hair and skin are the same color, a la Bram Stoker’s Dracula Looks

    • Onerous says:

Exactly. This would be all fine and well, if her hair looked good… but… well… it doesn’t.

    • ria says:

      Perfectly said, Qq.

    • Maire3 says:

Back when I used to lurk on Gawker, (2008ish), I remember seeing a comment thread from people who would see her out & about in NYC or LA. Often said her hair look fried.

      Paltrow is another fried blond.

  7. Anastasiia says:

Well, perfectly bleached roots are not good for everyone. I have to leave uncolored roots because otherwise I look like pink pig. But my natural color is dark blonde, so that’s not a crime.

  8. tmc says:

I think the hairstylist figured out a workaround that might be slightly better than bleach but … this is still damaging to the hair. she could go a lighter shade of brown. I know her look and image is important to her but she looked really sweet as a brunette (but that seems to have stopped at a young age). And that does sound high maintenance but I guess it is part of her job to her.

  9. silliness says:

How do I get an appointment with her stylist? I’ve been slowly trying to go blonde this summer and it’s not working out as quickly and as beautifully as I hoped, and I’m not even trying for platinum! LOL

Also, once a week? I get root growout the morning after! They must be applying something temporary at the root to hold her over those few days because I’ve never seen dark roots on this girl.

  10. MoochieMom says:

It is a gloss over grey. Ask your stylist. Semi permanent.

It take a lot to go from brown to a color because they have to strip your hair and then color it. A lot of stylists won’t do it if you want immediate results. Brown to blonde is a 12 week process where I go but they have a lot of healthy blonde hair.

  11. thaliasghost says:

Oh how I used to love Gwen back in the day because she represented to much….and she never actually was that person. That person was somebody like Kathleen Hannah all along. She never actually was a role model that I would want to have. Just a plastic barbie doll who cares about appearance only.

I seriously wonder what would happen to Gwen’s inner life if something happened to irreversebly change her appearance while still being young. Having a horrible accident disfiguring her face. She wouldn’t expect her partner to unconditionally stay by her side now, would she?

And I HATE myself for thinking…”oh, I would cheat too if I would have to live with her.” Hate, hate, hate myself. But there it was.

    • Andrea says:

I partly feel that way too—most people don’t like super high maintenance people and couldn’t stomach it in the long run. Supposedly she claimed Gavin liked her dolled up look, but I often wonder if she sis it out of vainness and obsession with youth.

    • Chloeee says:

      @Taliasghost??????
Gwen admitted she had serious body image issues growing up and always felt like the ugly duckling. I understand why you feel conflicted but I think that while 90’s-early 2000’s gwen’s fashion was a little problematic at times she really was a role model for young girls of that time. She was not the mainstream, she jumped around and sweat her ass off all while refusing to be pegged as ‘Just a Girl’. If you relisten to those lyrics of that song she touches on some hard truths of being a girl and feeling sized up by the world. Sure I miss that Gwen but I think it’s still in there. We all grow and change. She’s got kids now maybe she cares less about the anger or the message and is more business and image minded now. Shrug. That’s the business.

      • Tig says:

she was not only not mainstream, she was nearly alone as a frontwoman with a band, as opposed to a diva-type singer. I remember when Scott Weiland dressed up in a dress and pink hair so she wouldn’t be the only female at a large festival. Almost all of the alternative female singers list her as a main influence. if you see her in concert at all this summer, she still is that way

      • OSTONE says:

Gwen was my tween feminist idol back in the 90s. Just a girl still holds up! She is a great performer and songwriter who you can tell has a lot of self-esteem issues. I wish her nothing by the best, as she is kind and we’ve never heard otherwise.

      • delphi says:

All of this. Every last bit. Gwen was the alternative for girls like me who as teenagers had a real problem with pop singers like Britney, Jessica Simpson, and their ilk. We had Gwen, Shirley Manson, Alanis, Poe…girls who weren’t afraid to be different, and write about the realities of not fitting in.

I just saw Gwen in concert last week, and she was amazing. A-MAZING. 15 year-old me came out and just rocked out. I remember dyeing my hair with Manic Panic and wearing tank tops and combat pants, jumping on my bed singing “Don’t Speak” and “By The Way” into my hairbrush…it was one helluva night, and Gwen can still put on a great show.

  12. Christin says:

A high quality wig selection seems easier. Then be like Dolly, who doesn’t know how long it takes to do her hair, because she’s never there.

Added bonus — your real hair (and different hair color) can provide a disguise when on your off-time.

  13. Sumodo1 says:

I’m confused about the layers of conditioner. Wouldn’t that weigh down her hair and make it very greasy?

  14. velourazure says:

That 2003 picture is scary. Must have been before they started using the “magic formula”.

  15. Donna says:

I thought that first pic was Holly Madison.

  16. FF says:

I appreciate her commitment. It’s not for everyone but it’s interesting to see it done.

And frankly, a lot of celebs looks are high maintenance, doesn’t mean she has no inner life, just that she likes that look on herself enough to do it in a way that isn’t destroying her hair.

  17. lucy says:

Thanks for this! I don’t care how many trend-slaves think dark roots are attractive, I will always think they look unkempt and tacky to me. Although I am not a fan of Gwen’s music or voice, I give her props for her hair and makeup all these years.

    • We Are All Made Of Stars says:

Yeah….I just went to Sally’s yesterday. 🙂 I’ve always loved Gwen Stefani and thought she was a good role model for girls. But of course that was back in the 90s before we started pageant scrutinizing the hell out of female celebrities and demanded that they be transcendently flawless before deeming them acceptable for the honor…

  18. Gatita says:

She needs a new look. Exact same hair and make for more than 20 years.

  19. JeanGenie says:

Pantene tests its hair products on animals.
It’s disappointing that Gwen would support a brand that makes no effort to be cruelty-free, especially when there are so many alternatives in 2016.

  20. Kelly says:

In every one of those pictures she’s wearing extensions and I often see her in wigs. If her real hair is so healthy, prove it by showing it without wigs or extensions.

  21. bored_01 says:

Madonna has roots artfully died into her hair to make her look younger. She’s obviously got a lot of gray at her age.

    • Patrice says:

You are absolutely correct about that. Youth = Dark roots, not grey. Many actresses use this “trick”. 🙂

  22. Kate says:

I’m amazed she had hair left to bleach

  23. Twinkle says:

Maybe it’s just me, but I think her look is tired. Time for a change. She looks trashy.

  24. A.Key says:

Talk about killing your hair slowly. And for what? It sure as hell doesn’t look natural, she’s always looked like she had a wig on too me.

  25. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

The amount of plastic surgery she’s had is staggering. Her lips, nose, brows have changed a lot.

  26. Tessa says:

You can see now her hair is brassy but wasn’t before. Go back to bleach Gwen
I’ve been bleaching mine for 20 years and it’s in good condition( for coloured hair)
    That yellow tone is yuk

  27. coffeeisgood says:

She should give up that platinum color she looks so much better with brown hair
