Leslie Jones’s iCloud hacked, her personal info, photos posted to her website

"Ghostbusters" World Premiere - Arrivals
In people are awful and I want off this planet news, comedian Leslie Jones’s iCloud was somehow hacked to gain access to personal, intimate photos of her along with photos of her passport and driver’s license. The perpetrators added insult to injury by then posting all of her personal data to her website. In case we weren’t aware of their motivation, they also posted racist sh*t on Leslie’s site, including a video of the slain gorilla Harambe. Leslie brought widespread awareness last month to the massive problem of racist trolls on Twitter, which led to changes on the social networking platform including the banning of Breitbart journalist Milo Yiannopoulos and subsequent erasure of hundreds of thousands of accounts. (Reportedly those accounts were banned for connections to extremism, but I would guess that many racist accounts were rightfully caught up in that sweep.) THR reports that the messages on Leslie’s website from the hackers referenced Yiannopoulos’s ouster from Twitter. The site has since been taken down by Leslie’s people. For his part, Yiannopoulos has claimed to be “distressed” by the hack, but his statement reads haughty to me. “I’m distressed to hear that Leslie Jones has been hacked and naked pictures of her have been posted online. I know we had our differences after my review of Ghostbusters but I wish her all the best at what must be a deeply upsetting time.

Leslie just got back from an incredible trip to the Olympics cheering on and meeting so many athletes. It’s despicable and criminal that someone did this to her. She’s getting a lot of support online, with many people pointing out that this is even more evidence of the hatred and racism that women of color face on a daily basis. Here are some tweets in support of Leslie.

The more I read about this, the more my stomach is getting sick and the worse I feel for Leslie. It’s hard to know what to say, but I hope that the person or people who committed this horrible violation are investigated and prosecuted. The man who perpetrated the iPhone hacks on celebrities got ten years in federal prison and this goes beyond that to a clear cut hate crime. Whoever did this needs to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. That may be coming soon because TMZ reports that the FBI are on the case. I have the feeling that these people were stupid enough to send racist Twitter messages to Leslie before they did this. Hopefully this will be an easy case for the feds.

There also needs to be more justice for Leslie. Some people are coming up with clever ideas.

We #StandWithLeslie and are hoping that the people who did this to her are swiftly brought to justice.

I feel so bad for this lady!

    • Hadleyb says:

I would die. I am so private that this would have me in the looney bin for months.

This must be devastating. I got upset when a co worker posted a very unflattering pic of me on FB and refused to take it down ..and I was wearing clothes.

      • Liv says:

I would too. It’s not her fault, but isn’t there something to protect the cloud from celebritys or people in general? Seriously, who’s loading pictures up anymore when everyone can hack them?

    • Samtha says:

It’s unbelievable. All because she was in a movie they didn’t approve of! What in the world is WRONG with these manbabies?

      • Linn says:

Because she was in a movie they didn’t approve of and because she dared to speak out against the vile, misogynistic, racist behavior she was confronted with.

They expect women to keep their heads down and live their life as eye-candy that’s better seen than heard and if it doesn’t happen they try to shut women up by publicly humiliating and threatening them.

      • holly hobby says:

I think this was racially motivated, pure and simple. There were more than one person in that movie yet they centered their attacks on her. Horrible people.

    • liz_bee says:

I think she’ll come out on top. That’s the best revenge. As awful as all this is, and it would certainly be better had it never happened, she’s becoming a household name and I hope she gets great skits this year on SNL. As terrible as this is, I think she’ll use it to turn out some great material.

  2. Jellybean says:

I hear the FBI are already on this and so they should be, it is a hate crime and those responsible should be in jail.

    • Olenna says:

I certainly hope so. This sh*t is just evil.

    • Maire3 says:

Yes, they need to J.Edgar.Hoover those weasels out of anonymity

      Edit: #StandWithLeslie

    • lucy2 says:

Glad to hear that, hopefully these sick criminals are brought to justice.
My heart breaks for her, the first round of attacks were bad enough, and now this. She has done NOTHING to deserve any of it. I’m hope she has a lot of support in her life and stays strong through it all.

      • Ash says:

I do not understand the over-the-top hatred for Leslie. She’s done nothing to deserve this b.s.

        People can be such assholes.

    • Liz says:

I’m confident the FBI will find the coward.

It took them a year to find Christopher Chaney but they found him. He was reponsible for hacking into Scarlett’s email and then posting her nude photos online. He’s now serving 10 years in prison. What a loser.

      http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-20763788

  3. Neelyo says:

That Breitbart troll Milo deserves a huge dose of karma and I hope he gets it. He may not be directly responsible for the hack but he started this online lynch mob.

  4. OSTONE says:

Despicable, scary, nauseating. This year I have been disgusted by our society more than ever. I hope for Leslie’s sake that she remains strong and with her head high and for those criminals to be brought up for justice to be served #IStandwithLeslie

    • Jenna says:

I completely agree. I’ve lost track of how many times this year I’ve just sat back and been completely blown away by the disgust and hate radiating from certain sections of society. It’s a cancer, rotting the very bottom of society and the very top.

This poor woman. Works her ass off for years, wanting to make people laugh, and she’s ridiculed, assaulted and publicly humiliated. And for what? Starring in a movie? Defending herself against racism and abuse?

And notice this is only happening to her. Nobody is launching this level of hate at Wiig or McCarthy or McKinnon.

      • Carolyn says:

True, but Wiig, McKennon and McCarthy don’t have twitter. McCarthy has been attacked before, but not with this level of hatred which is worsen because of social media.

      • Naya says:

What do you mean, Carolyn? Melissa has a verified account and its active @melissamccarthy Some of those tweets are actually her, too. Please dont even try to discount the clearly racial aspect of these attacks. They made up memes conparing her to a gorilla and flooded her account every day for weeks with them …so seriously, dont even dare.

Frankly, I am concerned that the only person from the ghostbusters party speaking up consistently is Paul Feig. Twitter is not the only way to make your solidarity public. If Katy Perry can stick her neck out for a woman she has never met, its disgusting that these women, all of whom who have large fanbases havent bothered to speak. This is why so many WOC roll their eyes when white wonen start talking about “sisterhood”.

      • Ji-yun says:

@Naya Agreed. This is totally race related.

      • Kitten says:

@Naya- None of the other female members of SNL and cast of Ghostbusters have publicly defended her? I’m not on Twitter, but if true this is awful and I get your point.

    • Megan says:

I hope whoever did this is caught, prosecuted and given the stiffest sentence possible. This is a straight up hate crime.

    • Melly says:

I don’t know if this is an ignorant white person thing to say, but this year seems to be filled with racism. 2015 seemed less racist.
I’m sort of obsessed with Leslie Jones. She is my spirit sister. Whoever did this to her should be prosecuted with a hate crime and do major time. Leslie isn’t controversial or hateful towards anyone, she is always supporting other people and seems to be genuinely nice. Doesn’t she seem like a person you’d want to drink with? Or like the coolest person to go on a road trip with? So in love with her.
      #StandWithLeslie #ImWithHER!

      • littlemissnaughty says:

It’s not 2016. It’s just all coming to the surface. People feel encouraged to be assh*les in public and on the internet and the rest of us have had it. Women have had it, minorities have had it (just to name two), basically everyone is maxed out on hate. So if someone thinks they can keep being an assh*le or get away with sex crimes or racist attacks, they’re in for a rude awakening. Things aren’t worse, they’re just more visible. And the downside is that those who stand up for themselves or others feel the backlash. Because apparently a lot of men, white people, and especially white men can’t deal with the concepts of equality and basic human decency.

I love Leslie, she comes across as such a fun and positive person. These criminals need to rot in hell. I will never understand how someone else’s existence or life choices provoke so much hatred.

      • Snowflake says:

        @ little miss August
Plus one. How can people be so mean?

  5. Janetdr says:

I have nothing but love for Leslie.

  6. vanna says:

What vicious, descpicable and hurtful monsters some people can be shocks me everytime.

    • Naya says:

Agreed. I cant wait for them to be caught. I already know what they look like in minds eye but I need to see it confirmed. One of my best 2012 moments was seeing that Violentacres guy exposed, lose his job, lose family members and show up on CNN crying about being labelled a monster. Its just a matter of time.

  7. Bluesky says:

As a woman of color, this sickens me. If you are successful black woman and proud of who you are and don’t necessarily fit the mode of what people think a black woman is or should be, they will do everything they can to tear you down. It’s like they can’t deal with it so they try to denigrate her. I hope they catch these a**holes!

  8. G says:

Misogynoir is not a new term and Katy Perry didn’t coin it.

To cite who did, try looking up Trudy on twitter. I am pretty sure she is the person, or one of them, who came up with the term.

Also, people needed to leave Leslie alone months ago. This is sick.

    • Zapp Brannigan says:

Black feminist scholar Moya Bailey came up with the term Misogynoir, not Katy Perry. Trudy at Gradient Layer is also credited.

The subhumans who did this to Leslie Jones should be ashamed and jailed for a very long time.

    • Celebitchy says:

      Ok I fixed this!

    • Nicole says:

She didn’t coin it but I’m shocked and pleased that she knew the term and used it. Not many people outside minorities are aware of the term (as evidenced by the story).
But this attack is gross. Just proof that people don’t want black women to succeed.

  9. greenmonster says:

This is horrible. So many people were victim blaming Jennifer Lawrence when her photos were leaked and it was awful to read comments online.
But the comments you can find on other sides are beyond that. I usually hate it when someone says that but it broke my heart a little to read the ugly, nasty, horrific comments.

    • Nicole says:

Yep. Lawrence was targeted by a lot of hate after her hack. Because people hate women. We are too slutty or prude. Too meek or outspoken. Too pretty with makeup or we should wear more OR we should be natural. We actually can’t win. The attack on Leslie is basically the celeb hack from 2014 plus a dose of racism thrown it. It’s appalling as a woman and a WOC at that.
      I’m so sad for her.

      • Tourmaline says:

“Because people hate women.” Devastatingly true. And there you have it. Also do you generally see women terrorizing men on Twitter the way that men terrorize women? No you really don’t.

    • Kitten says:

I’m supporting Leslie the way I supported J Law by NOT clicking on the photos. I hope everyone here does the same.

      • greenmonster says:

Oh absolutely. It never crossed my mind to click on the leaked photos. They were supposed to be private.

  10. Some people are so full of hate. She has all of my support in everything she does for the rest of forever. And, I refuse to look at her leaked info. Poor woman.

    • Tulip Garden says:

I don’t think that I ever looked at anyone’s leaked nude/death photos. It’s just human decency which seems to be lacking in our society. If it happened to me, I wouldn’t want others to add to that crime. Just, you know, follow the golden rule, it is so easy😟

  11. QueenB says:

    ugh men are disgusting

    • Tulip says:

I don’t think all men are disgusting, but the men who participated in the hack are. Vicious, nasty, and awful.

      • Linn says:

I’m disgusted by the men who participated in the hack but nearly as disgusted by people of both genders that casually spread the photos and information like it’s no big deal and the victims have brought it all on themselves.

  12. paolanqar says:

That asshole needs jail for what he did.

  13. mia girl says:

F*^k these people and the twisted hate that lives in their hearts.

What’s been directed at Leslie Jones over the past few months is beyond abusive, it’s a form of terrorism. They are terrorizing her.

And this talented, strong woman just spent the past two weeks spreading love, joy and national pride with her Olympics coverage.

Just so outraged and heartbroken for her.

    • adastraperaspera says:

@Mia, you’re right to call it terrorism. As we all know, the purpose of this kind of harassment is not just to hurt Leslie, but to frighten all African-American women. Terrorism is defined as “the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims.” So this particular criminal act is intended to block Leslie and other African-American women from gaining any power or position in any area of life. In this case, their clear political aim is to preserve a society that privileges white men over everyone else. I think our best weapon against them is to shout about this injustice from the mountaintops and continue the long march to change laws, hearts and minds.

    • Kitten says:

Completely agree that it is terrorism, and not in a hyperbolic sense. These assholes targeting Jones are literally making her terrified to live her life like a normal person.

      I’m so disgusted.

  14. Insomniac says:

Please let the FBI find the scumbags doing this to Leslie and lock them up for as long as it’s allowed. This is just horrible. I think of how happy she was in Rio and my heart breaks.

  15. Katie says:

What did she ever do to anyone? she’s funny and talented and seems like a really amazing person. She starred in a movie that a bunch of fanboys hated so now they think it’s okay to literally destroy her?!
I hope the FBI IS on this case and that they prosecute whoever is responsible to the fullest extent of the law.
Leslie Jones, I know you won’t see this, but I hope you know that people are behind you and think you deserve so so much better.

    • mia girl says:

What she ever do to anyone:
      1. She was part of a re-boot of a movie that had an all female cast
      2. She endured racist and misogynist comments on Twitter from some-form-of-male-life fan-boy who just couldn’t take that the movie had an all female cast.
      4. She stood up to these alt-right butt heart a*sholes and showed the world what they were tweeting her. Twitter took action and kicked them off.
5 through infinity. She is a strong, successful woman of color

I think that sums up “what did she ever do to anyone” in the minds of these emotionally regressed as*holes.

      • Flowerchild says:

Why is she getting hate for the re-boot and the other co-stars. Not that I think any of them should get a for the re-boot.

  16. Lisa says:

    People disgust me.

  17. Giddy says:

Leslie Jones has given me so much pleasure, She’s great on SNL and her posts from the Olympics were hilarious. If she’s not everyone’s cup of tea that’s fine, just as Amy Schumer isn’t mine. The idea of racist idiots attacking her is disgusting. I hope this troll is caught, exposed, and prosecuted.

  18. Luna says:

I’m teaching my children about the stupidity of racism, is like hating people because they have small feet, green eyes or big hands…

    • byland says:

I remember another student saying terribly rascist things to one of my best friend’s when we were ten or so. I told them how ridiculous I thought they were for the same reasons I find thinking like that stupid now: “I didn’t choose to be born white, have red hair or blue eyes, or even choose to be born at all. I just was. You were born white and he was born black. That’s just how it happenened. Right now I’m going to choose to never talk to you again, though. Because that IS a choice.”

That’s the way I explain certain things to my kids, too. My husband talks about how in war (our oldest knows he was in the Army) the color of someone’s skin or who they love has nothing to do with keep everyone safe.

  19. Common Sense says:

This is very disturbing and sickening, what Leslie is going through…I can’t even imagine her mental and emotional state at this moment.

  20. Sam says:

Sadly, once she stood up to them, a lot of people felt like something like this was coming. You can’t win – if you ignore them, you just take the beating and nobody else knows. If you call them out, you encourage them to up the nastiness. So no matter what she says or does, she can’t win with them.

  21. FingerBinger says:

This is disgusting. I haven’t seen the hacked photos and I’ll never look at them. Nobody should have their privacy violated like that.

    • Tiffany says:

Yeah. When hacked photos became a thing, I just avoid some websites like the plague because you know what is coming. Always appreciated that CB never showed or linked them.

      • Flowerchild says:

I agree and I never get the people who do look at them. You know these pictures were made public with out their consent, so why would you continue to violate them.

  22. Nev says:

Twirl on dem haters Leslie. Your a star. You make me smile even just looking at you. Not many people can do that for me. Stand tall.

  23. K says:

I feel horrible for her, she has done nothing but work hard and succeed and this threatens these sad weak pathetic hate filled losers. I am glad to see from the comments that the FBI is on this and I hope they find and prosecute who did this.

  24. Samtha says:

This is one of the crappiest things I’ve seen in a long while. What is wrong with these people that they think something like this is okay?

  25. I Choose Me says:

Heard about this since last night and I didn’t feel outrage, just a sort of sad numbness. Need to go look a videos of ducklings and other cute things because I’m so disappointed and heartsick that stuff like this keeps happening that I can’t really deal right now.

    • Guesto says:

Me too. I felt the same as you, just this awful sad sinking feeling that people can be so deliberately and maliciously and joylessly cruel and hate-filled.

  26. Jade says:

    I #standwithleslie

  27. Fran says:

This is awful. I’m a recent fan, ever since the whole thing about not finding a designer, and then following her joy in the Olympics. Why are people so awful?

  28. Marty says:

This is heartbreaking. All of this because she brought to light the disgusting hate and racism she has to deal with all the time.

Why? Because there are sad individuals who don’t want to see someone who simply looks like Leslie Jones succeed, but have no problem supporting a bigot to be the next leader of the United States.

    I’m so tired.

  29. QQ says:

This is just so awful and disgusting and toxic and BTW the way Twitter is letting people say vile stuff at her continuing to cook, the way CBS news said this morning there were black media women that didnt want to take on the report package on Camera because they know the horde of basement dwelling animals would come for them is exactly what I mean when I said before we as Black women don’t matter/aren’t worthy of protection and America shows us that on the Regular… my heart f*cking HURTS for Leslie, I’m keeping an eye on who comes to her defense cause this is the last time you’ll see me supporting anyone silent on this sh*t (Yes I’m Looking at her Co-stars/Coworker even… Black Men too)

On Another level too seeing people parsing/saying is not so bad/or in any way trying to hedge their bet here or the FBI not stepping in like they did during the Fappening Trash fire… It makes me feel as though when I hear people in my timeline say Beware The Allies and we have Just Us to carry all this ugly way and change whatever is Oppressing us ..it’s actually true….

    • *hugs*

you said all the words I don’t even have the strength to right now, this shit can break you down and just feel like ‘why’? Know that I’ll fight till my dying breath but I don’t want anyone to steal my happiness, joy, or peace of mind in the process and that’s where I ache for Leslie. That they are putting that fear in her that tells her to never be too happy, never let her guard down too much.

      I’m tired of this shit.

Being a POC can make you paranoid enough as it is without the battering Leslie keeps suffering.

    • Abbess Tansy says:

I’m sick and tired of this mess as well. Why can’t just let her be? She hasn’t harmed anyone, just living her life.

      • AngelaH says:

But she is harming people. She’s harming racists and misogynists that don’t want to see any woman succeeding on her own terms, much less a woman of color.

What’s more, when they were saying their terrible racist things, she didn’t just let it happen, she took action and she got a bunch of these people kicked off of Twitter. So they have to put her back in her place. These people don’t want her to do well. They don’t want Twitter to listen to her and actually take action against them. They’ve been able to do whatever and say whatever their whole lives without consequence. How dare she make them suffer any consequences?

Then on top of that, she gets to go to the Olympics and be even more successful.

Yep. Can’t have that. Time to intimidate her and make her feel unsafe.

        It’s gross. It’s so gross.

  30. Dani says:

This poor lady. All she did was make a kick ass movie and be super sweet and cool. WTF is our society coming to?

  31. Colette says:

I haven’t really followed this story because I have never seen either Ghostbusters so this wasn’t really on my radar.Did the other actresses get hate on social media and Leslie simply got more because she is black and a woman? Or did they only go after her?
I can’t imagine how violated I would feel if someone leaked my information AND compared me to a gorilla.
I feel so sorry for her.:-(

  32. Whatabout says:

This is awful. I’m wondering if she’s being stalked by someone?? The posts on Twitter that are now blocked maybe set a person who isn’t stable over the edge? Either way I hope she comes out of this okay.

  33. *black power fist*

I know your folks are probably keeping you far away from the Internet Leslie but just know you are loved, adored and respected. You have done nothing more worse than being black and proud, to those who try to attack you the fact you are makes you a terrifying threat, please do not hide your light or let them steal your joy. Just know how much fear and shame rule their lives that the only way they could feel any happiness was to try and destroy yours. As they feel the FBI close in on them just know these moments are filled with terror and the realization they and their type will be removed from society. We will not continue to let this be acceptable.

Much love, good luck, star baby.

    • QQ says:

That’s what Offends em, that she isn’t here for their approval or consumption in any way and she ISN’T Ashamed Of it either

Stay Magic and Proud My Sisters! *Fist Up AND Ese Nod*

  34. Lucy says:

I’m so mad about this. What the f*ck is wrong with some people? They’re simply the worst. Obviously #IStandWithLeslie and I hope she’s okay.

  35. OhDear says:

Damn, that’s just messed up. All she did was exist and do her job.

  36. Sigh... says:

I could have SWORN that Milo A*HOLE posted an IG pic calling this hack “karma,” so “distressed my @ss…😒

  37. Gardenia says:

This makes me sick. I hope the human trash responsible for this appalling hate crime are caught and given the harshest sentence possible. What the f*** is wrong with people.

  38. Tara says:

This is revenge from the alt-right over Milo. These are the dudes supporting Trump. This is what Trump country is made of. Right wing white men who are violent, vicious, vengeful, racist, sexist, racist again because that’s a big one with them, and out to destroy.

    Vote! Please.

As for Leslie Jones, I am heartbroken for her and feel very helpless. I want to help her, but I’ve no idea how.

    • Tina says:

Exactly, this! I was worried about Brexit before it happened due to seeing Leave signs all over the place, and now I’m on holiday in the US and the Trump signs are everywhere. It is not guaranteed, polls are not infallible. The only way to ensure Trump loses is to get out there and vote.

  39. Lynnie says:

Poor Leslie 😢. I can only hope things start looking up for her soon and karma works overtime.

Maaaaaaaaajor side-eye to her co-stars staying silent on the topic, and to Apple and their inability to get iCloud right. Like where is all the money for our phones going??

    • Lama Bean says:

Your side-eyes are directed properly. I agree.

    • Tiffany says:

Agree. The press tour with them looks like a joke now. It just shows who they really are. And would not expect anything less from Paul Feig.

    • Samtha says:

I wonder if maybe they’re afraid to speak up and become victims too. Feig, being a man, is less vulnerable, less of a target.

  40. celine says:

I don’t understand why this lady is getting so much hate online. What the f is wrong with people and their unwarranted hate against someone who has done nothing to merit this type of online abuse? This is straight up racism, misogyny and pure hate.

  41. cynic says:

I feel so sick about this. I’m so sad about what Leslie Jones has had to endure. I hope whoever hacked her account is caught and ultimately jailed.

  42. Trixie says:

I don’t understand it. Is all this just because she was in the Ghostbusters reboot? Did she do anything specific to cause the hate being directed toward her? Why is only Jones getting this level of hate when there were three other women in the new Ghostbusters? And why do people care so much about a movie that they are will to go to the trouble to hack her iCloud? What is going on with the world?

    • AngelaH says:

Racists were being racist towards her on Twitter and saying some terrible things. She put it all out there. She said she was leaving Twitter because she wasn’t going to participate in a platform for abuse. Twitter, maybe finally realizing that their silence could cost them some users that they want to keep, finally did something about it and shut down a bunch of accounts.

So yeah, she did something more than just star in Ghostbusters. She didn’t just walk away quietly. She stood up for herself and called the racism what it was and she got results!

Obviously, this can’t be allowed to happen without consequence. It might give other people the idea that they can stand up for themselves too and someone might start listening to women and people of color and racists might be held accountable once in a while for the hateful, racist violent things they say.

  43. Kitten says:

It is unquestionably in this order:
    1) RACISM
    2) MISOGYNY
    3) TERRORISM*

*the state of fear and submission produced by the use of violence, threats, harassment to intimidate.

    Everyone should be outraged. Everyone.

  44. Darlene says:

I will not be trying to find these photos or anything that violates her privacy. I hope the people who did this end up in jail.

  45. Bex says:

This is a vile act of racism and sexism that nobody should ever have to deal with. I’m so sad for her. I hope that everything possible is done to get whoever did this behind bars.

  46. Pandy says:

She’s under attack for no reason, the poor thing. But, you know … just don’t take nude or lewd selfies. Just don’t. Nothing to embarrass you then.

    • Megan says:

Is it wrong that I am actually a little bit impressed that the victim blaming didn’t start until the 46th comment? Like, I think that shows that most people are starting to get this shit right?

How about we all take whatever pictures of ourselves we want? And when hate-filled racist c*ntwaffles on the internet decide to take what is not theirs to hurt, humiliate and terrorize anyone for being unapologetically who they are, let’s continue to find them and punish them to the fullest extent of the law.

This did NOT happen to Leslie because she took nude photos of herself. This happened to Leslie because racists just can’t stop themselves from being racist. So please direct your blame and shaming to the correct party here rather than the victim of this hate crime. FFS.

      • Kitten says:

        Preach!

And I agree that this is improvement over the J Law threads so yay for small progress?

      • Erinn says:

        +1000000

      • paranormalgirl says:

        all the plusses.

      • Beanie Baby says:

Not wrong at all to be impressed and like some commenters up thread stated, people are just getting fed up with it all. I for one am fed up and it wasn’t just naked pictures of Leslie’s that were posted on her site. Her license which shows her current address and passport were also posted. I don’t know about you, Pandy but I’d definitely feel terrified if people would come for me at such great lengths to hack my iCloud but also make it possible for other people to now terrorize me at my own home.

      • North of Boston says:

+10000 Megan and Kitten and others

Leslie is the *VICTIM* here. She did nothing wrong. Ya got that?

The creeps who hacked her account, the business people who promoted and managed services that allowed hacking – THOSE are the people who should be hanging their heads in shame.

An adult woman who took pictures of herself to share privately? who enjoyed and shared her sexuality in private with someone of her choosing? who has succeeded and thrived in comedy and acting and the public sphere? – yeah, she’s got ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO FEEL GUILTY ABOUT OR BE ASHAMED ABOUT.

    • Erinn says:

So Pandy, if you shop online, and your credit card info gets breached – just don’t shop online, right? Or if you are signed up with a service company like electricity, or gas, or oil delivery, and that company has their database hacked, and your personal details such as address, phone, and credit card info get used and abused – just live completely off the grid, correct?

    • meow says:

yeah, but I can if I want to.

    • Lala says:

In theory, I agree with the people who say we should be able to take any pictures we want without fear of being hacked. Of course, who wouldn’t agree with that? But in practice, ultimately my goal is to protect myself. In a perfect world, I would be able to walk down any street at night, alone, and not risk being mugged, kidnapped, or raped. In a perfect world, I would be able to leave my laptop in a public place and have nobody take it because they all knew that would be morally wrong. But I know, based on being a person who’s alive, that it’s far from a perfect world and any of these things might happen. There are (and always have been and always will be) vile people who will violate other people’s rights. I can (and do) rage against that reality and want it to change, but ultimately I will weigh my risks against the benefits of any particular activity. So in that sense, I agree with Pandy – if you want to be absolutely sure you’re never in the position of having nude pics hacked — don’t put nude pics in the cloud. It might not be fair or right that you have to even consider being hacked, but it DOES protect you from having that happen to you, which for some of us is the bottom line.

As for the argument of “do you still shop online even though your credit card can be hacked?” — yes, I personally do, because the potential fallout of having my credit card hacked would be unpleasant or financially difficult but probably not personally devastating. I weigh the risks and decide I will do it anyway. We all have to choose what risks we’re willing to take. For some, putting nude pics in the cloud may be a risk they want to take – but I don’t. And I don’t think it’s “victim blaming” to point out that we all need to make these decisions each day on the basis of what is REALITY in our society. It’s not wrong to suggest that people watch out for their own protection while ALSO advocating for changes that will make such self-protection less necessary.

      • Kitten says:

Here’s the thing: I don’t have any nude pics on my phone, I don’t have any provocative pics on my phone, but I absolutely have pics on my phone that I would be completely uncomfortable with the world seeing.
To me, this isn’t a question of nude/provocative/NSFW photos being on one’s phone, it’s a question of people’s right to privacy, end of. I don’t know what Jones’s hacked photos are of, nor do I care because to me, it’s irrelevant. No citizen-whether public or private-should have to live in fear of having their private information leaked. As soon as you start moralizing/chastising/admonishing the victim, you lose sight of that and you dilute the core issue, the core issue being every person’s basic right to privacy.

    • Snowflake says:

It’s on her private phone. It was not meant for everyone to see. There is not the expectation that someone is going to hack into her phone. Its not her fault.

    • coco says:

And if you don’t want to experience racism… just be white, y’know

  47. stinky says:

F*ck the ‘cloud’ is all I have to add – as y’all have said the rest.
This is kind of the apex of troll-foul.
With all the anti-bullying rhetoric campaigning we’ve seen in recent years, now a return to straight-up raciscm???
Its ridiculolus – I swear its 17 years boys olds doing this.

  48. Kitten says:

I REALLY wanted to avoid googling that dude because I don’t care to know who he is but alas, my curiosity got the best of me so from wiki: “As a homosexual, ‘cultural libertarian’,[8] and ‘free speech fundamentalist’, he is a vocal critic of feminism,[9] Islam, social justice, atheism, political correctness, and other movements and ideologies he perceives to be authoritarian or belonging to the ‘regressive left’.”

Wow wow WOW what a prize…I hate to say this but at least he’s not American?

    • stinky says:

war is only EVER about two things, religion or money.
atheism really isn’t a bad thing.
      i promise.

      • Kitten says:

        Completely agree with you.
        *high fives*

      • coco says:

Only money. Religion intolerance or racism are just used as a convenient reason for war and colonization but it always boils down to economics.

  49. paranormalgirl says:

I hate what society has become. I hate these every day attacks of personal terrorism.

  50. Josefina says:

The internet is so disgusting. This level of harrassment because she starred in a movie you didn’t want to watch? Couldn’t you just not watch the movie and call it a day?

  51. justme says:

Social media is a cancer on society. All these horrible hateful racist trolls feel free to post the most vile comments about people. I think social media has made people crueler than they ever were. What did this woman do to that all this hate is directed at her? I just don’t understand. I stay off social media.

  52. Denny says:

    Unpopular opinion.
She had it coming. You don’t mess with people online.
And no one famous should have pictures like that saved on personal devices. Honestly, those pictures are disgusting and make me view her in a different light.

    • Kitten says:

lol @ “you don’t mess with people online”. Oh FFS.

And the fact that 1) You LOOKED at those pictures in the first place and 2 ) You felt ok to sit safely, comfortably, and anonymously behind your computer screen and judge Leslie Jones for HER own private pictures that were hacked and released for public consumption without her knowledge or consent proves that YOU are the disgusting one, not to mention cowardly and pathetic.

    • Tourmaline says:

“You don’t mess with people online”. OK. Now get back under your bridge troll.

    • byland says:

      You’re certainly right, “unpopular opinion.”

Clearly you didn’t really view her in a favorable light to begin with if you looked at them in the first place and then had the audacity to judge HER for offending your sensibilities.

Now I’ll stop here because nothing else I can think to say is at all appropriate for a public forum – and no one deserves to be abused online, even people who seem to be without boundaries themselves.

    • Neal says:

@Denny So… You look at her in a different light because she most likely took photos to share with someone that finds her beautiful and sexy? She’s at fault for being an adult embracing her sexuality and sharing that with someone she’s into? Those pics weren’t meant for the public or YOU since you looked at them. If any one should be judged here it’s you since you violated her privacy as well.

    • Tina says:

That is a carefully crafted, and frankly evil, response. Only a sociopath could come up with that.

    • Choo says:

The fact that you even looked at the pictures says everything we need to know about you.
I think you have very deep-rooted issues if you choose to look at stolen intimate pictures of a person and then judge them for having sexuality.

  53. byland says:

Lainey wrote a piece about this today that I think is pretty on the money, no matter how circuitous her writing can be at times (although, honestly, that tends to be her “blind” items).

    An excerpt:

“Maybe that’s what she did wrong. Maybe, in being herself, and earning the admiration of so many, she broke the rule, the rule that says that a black woman who won’t conform can’t be popular and successful while being proud and outspoken. And the a$$holes who uphold that rule, who cling to the existence of that rule because otherwise the system that unfairly favours them would start to crumble, had to punish her for it. They tried to humiliate her for it. They wanted to humiliate her for having the audacity to aspire to more. How dare she create opportunities for herself? How dare she want more than what’s been institutionally limited to her?”

There rest is in her open for today.

    ETA: #IStandWithLeslie

  54. Marianne says:

This makes me so mad. Like, all she did was do a effing Ghostbusters movie. So what if your childhood movie was remade? So what if if it wasn’t good? She doesn’t deserve this.

  55. North of Boston says:

Apple / iCloud deserve some blame for enabling things like this to happen.

The perpetrators are the guilty ones and are to blame for their own hateful actions, obviously.

But big data tech companies that tout secure data storage/cloud based services need to do a better job protecting their customers’ data from hackers and should have mechanisms to shut down access when an account has been breached.

Hugs and love to Leslie and to others who are targeted by these a**holes, and left open to harassment by negligent data services.

  56. JRenee says:

What a gross invasion of privacy. The ish being thrown at her is unimaginable. Truly there are too many evil people in this world. T
    Enough with the cloud hacks!
    My heart hurts for her.

  57. Veronica says:

Misogynoir – alive and well in the 21st century.

Leslie’s experience this past month has just solidified my belief that freedom of speech can’t exist in a world where prejudice does. The only reason Twitter doesn’t believe the same is because it’s run by two white men who will never have to worry about this kind of cruelty.
