Fox News anchor Shep Smith comes out, discusses Roger Ailes’ ‘betrayal’

Controversial opinion: not everybody on Fox New sucks all the time. Some of the Fox News anchors/journalists actually have rare moments of brilliance or journalistic integrity. It’s just that those moments get lost in the rest of the rabid right-wing messaging. While many people want Megyn Kelly to become the sole reasonable voice on the network, many others have turned to Shep Smith, the long-time Fox News anchor and glass-closeted gay man. People have “known” that Shep is gay for years now – Gawker used to write stuff about him, but so did other sites – but Shep has never really discussed it directly. Well, Shep was profiled by HuffPo for a piece declaring that he is possibly the face of post-Roger Ailes Fox News. And within the interview, Shep actually acknowledges – in a way – his homosexuality. Here’s that section:

The pain was heightened by the depth of the trust Shep Smith once had in Roger Ailes. “It’s such a wonderful place, and it’s been home forever. He was very fatherly and mentorish,” he said. “And now I know that there were other things going on here.”

Along with the rampant sexual harassment that brought Ailes down, there were also reports that he used homophobic slurs toward rivals. Though Shep rarely talks about his sexuality, he is regularly, for instance, included in Out Magazine’s Power 50 list. I asked if Ailes had ever made homophobic remarks when he was around. “No, never. He treated me with respect, just respect,” Shep said. “I wasn’t new in the business when I came here ― I’d been doing reporting for 12 years ― but I wasn’t old in it either, and he gave me every opportunity in the world and he never asked anything of me but that we get it right, try to get it right every day. It was a very warm and loving and comfortable place.”

He said that reports that Ailes had prevented him from coming out publicly several years ago were false. “That’s not true. He was as nice as he could be to me. I loved him like a father,” he said. “I trusted him with my career and with ― I trusted him and trusts were betrayed. People outside this company can’t know [how painful that betrayal was]. This place has its enemies, but inside, it was very personal, and very scarring and horrifying.”

Shep goes on to say that Fox News should not back away from covering itself and that Fox News journalists should not shy away from talking about what Roger Ailes did to them. He speaks passionately about the need to “face up to what we’ve learned” and “make sure there aren’t young victims wandering around here who need us. We have to get appropriate counselors in here. We have to make sure legally everybody’s protected and have to make a commitment to be the most transparent, open and welcoming organization of our kind in the world, and I’m determined to be a part of the team that makes it happen.” Which I think is a really great stance to take – he’s showing legitimate concern for Ailes’ victims and for the culture of their newsroom.

As for Shep finally answering direct questions about what it was like to be gay at Fox News… from what he says, I get the feeling that he was always out with coworkers and friends and it was never some huge secret at Fox News. Which is how it should be. But even though he denies it though, I do think he was probably discouraged from discussing his sexuality openly while Ailes was in charge.

I thought he was out already? Anyway I hate FOX but like Shep. He put a smack down on Hannity post-Katrina ( Shep was on the ground and Hannity was being an ass as usual) that’s endeared him To me ever since. I think Shep tries to actually be fair and balanced.

I agree I will only watch his show.
Shep is basically like Anderson Cooper was pre 2012.Everyone knew he was gay but he never said it publicly.

I still don’t know why LGBT people have to ‘acknowledge/admit/announce’ their sexuality.

The day when people stop demanding people ‘come out’ is a long way away.

    • Who ARE These People? says:

They don’t “have” to — they “want” to – because they used to have to hide and feel ashamed of who they are.

I don’t think anyone demanded that he be ‘out,’ but the power structure at Fox News has been changing especially with the lawsuits against and departure of Roger Ailes.

    • MC2 says:

I agree that people shouldn’t have to ‘come out’. I never came out as hetro. But that is a far cry from hiding it or scooting it under the rug in a ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’. It’s the don’t tell part that’s the problem & maybe Shep was told not to talk about his sexuality or bring attention to it. Not claiming to be gay or talk about it is different then not being able to be open about it.

Just because he’s gay doesn’t mean he’ll be the voice of reason. Just sayin.

Thank you! Wasn’t he the one saying everyone in the path of hurricane Matthew was going to die? Ugh
He was an anchor at a local news station here in Miami, no news here

      • Abby_J says:

Actually, the Weather Channel was saying the same thing in the days leading up to the Hurricane and as it was happening. The Reps from Florida were actually talking about how many body bags they may need for people who stayed.

  4. Matomeda says:

Call me slow, but I didn’t know he was gay. I’ve always loved him.

    • Abbess Tansy says:

Yeah I’m slow about many things, including that I didn’t know he was gay as well. I’ve always been a bit neutral about him because Fox News.

His wording on Ailes is interesting, “he was as nice as he could be to me”. As nice as a homophobic old racist could be? Maybe it wasn’t actually that nice.

  6. antipodean says:

I have never had much time for his “reporting/journalistic” skills since he reported at Diana’s funeral, and had absolutely no clue who Margaret Thatcher, or John Major were, simply clueless and ill prepared. Also, he should really fire his plastic surgeon, he has made a mask of SS’s face.

  7. SKF says:

I’m sorry, but anyone on Fox News is a joke to me. I’m Australian and I’d always heard how biased it was; however in2012 when I was in the States and I finally saw it, I was gobsmacked. It isn’t biased, it is outright propaganda! I could not believe the things I was seeing and hearing!! Insane.

  8. krtmom says:

Wow, what a revelation! BTW how come he acted like such a fool during Hurricane Matthew? Surprised he still has a job!!!
