Marion Cotillard on the rise of Donald Trump & Marine le Pen: ‘Fear is winning’

‘Tis the season… for velvet on the red carpet! Yay! I love a well-done velvet frock, and Marion Cotillard tried to bring some velvet love to the Spanish premiere of Allied last night. Marion and Brad extended their European promotional swing – from Paris on Sunday, London on Monday and now Madrid on Tuesday. Marion’s fashion tour hasn’t been too spectacular, given her absolutely laughable Stella McCartney dress in London, but this velvet Armani Prive gown is rather stunning. Beautiful, flattering cut for a pregnant lady. My one qualm? The thing on the bust. It looks like a pipe cleaner, correct?

Meanwhile, Marion is still doing most of the talking during the promotional tour, and I hope to God someone at the studio notices that and gives her some hazard pay, because she’s been handling it really well. When in London, Marion chatted with The Guardian and she was asked about the political situation in America… and in France.

Allied star Marion Cotillard has suggested that “art is going to be even more important now” after the election of Donald Trump as US president. Speaking ahead of the premiere of the Robert Zemeckis second world war thriller in London on 21 November, Cotillard said that “fear is winning” and that a similar “super-scary … problem” is rearing its head in France, which is gearing up for its own presidential election in April. The extreme right candidate Marine le Pen is expected to perform strongly.

Cotillard also called for intellectuals to take a stand to defend freedom of speech: “All the philosophers, thinkers and writers, who question themselves and the world, and who have the freedom of speech and freedom to express themselves, have to do it – for the ones who cannot.”

[From The Guardian]

Marion is right to be concerned, especially about the upcoming French election. Marine le Pen is ridiculously far-right. She’s been advocating the anti-immigrant, anti-Semitic, anti-Muslim policies for years. And she and her party (the National Front) are leading (BIGLY) in all of the latest polls. Brexit was probably the first domino. Then the election of President Trump. What’s next? President le Pen? The dissolution of the EU? Angela Merkel being kicked out of office? Donald Trump starting a world war because of a Twitter beef? Any or all of that is up for grabs in the coming year.

    Marion is so so beautiful

  2. Rapunzel says:

I’d respect Cotillard’s stance more if she wasn’t an idiot 9-11 “truther.”

    • Ana says:

What did she said about 9-11 ?

    • BonnieJean says:

huh…I respect her stance either way & don’t consider her an idiot because she thinks differently than me. I have many friends who are conspiracy theorists & don’t think less of them for their views.

      • Rapunzel says:

Ana- 9-11 “truthers” are conspiracy theorists who believe 9-11 was an inside job by the US government.

Bonniejean- the 9-11 conspiracy theories are an offense to folks who lost loved ones. I like a good conspiracy, but with such massive tragedy, I can’t respect folks ignoring reality.

And it’s hypocritical to condemn the “fear” rising today when you support a loony theory that is in part responsible for creating that climate of fear. We should absolutely think less of folks who create their own alternative “truth” at the expense of actual facts.

People like Trump and LePen succeed because of these conspiracies. These theories denigrate facts and perpetuate the distrust of government that makes people want to “make America (or France) great again” through voting for crazy, fascist demagogues.

      • BonnieJean says:

If there is anything to the theories & I had lost loved ones, I would be much more interested in the truth as opposed to believing a lie.

      • Tina says:

But that’s the point – there isn’t anything to the theories. They’ve been thoroughly debunked with actual facts. But people don’t want to trust the facts, and the reputable people who provide them. They’d rather rely on sketchy theories that make no sense. It’s the same problem as those who believe Alex Jones.

    • uninspired username says:

But she wasn’t wrong here, at least.

    • Vixi says:

But when these called facts doesn’t fit with what is happening in reality, how can you possibly believe it as the truth? When facts are distorted people get confused and give in to Fear easily. That’s why I have no problem believing in either conspiracy theories or what the government sells as the “truth”. Reality is what you make of it. Believe what you believe is true for you and it will set you free. There is no need to debunk or call someone an idiot because they do not believe what you believe. This will only create more conflict among people.

  3. Birdix says:

I guess I haven’t been paying attention — how does Brad look so much younger?
    And I still can’t with the 9/11, moon-landing denier.

  4. Sixer says:

She’s right about art. We need protest art. Bigly!

It is feeling like a scary transnational domino topple, isn’t it? I’ve never seen a Britisher political event get as much attention stateside as Brexit did. Now I’m beginning to understand why.

  5. Karen says:

The world’s really gone to crap when a 9/11 truther is making sense about politics.

  6. MissMerry says:

    J’adore Marion.

and well said about having to speak up for those who cannot (or whose voices are ignored).

Yesterday my heart was broken, I, for the first time, felt sincerely afraid of what is going to happen in this world. The election of Trump is (to me, in a way) giving the OK to everyone else in the World to be evil and get away with it. It’s interesting and scary to see France is facing a similar situation with a potential leader.

  7. Suzie says:

They both look gorgeous. And yes the world is becoming a scary place. What makes me angry is the high absenteeism rate. While right-wingers make sure they vote, a high percentage of the population doesn’t bother voting. Don’t they realize they can no longer afford not to care?

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

In France,The absenteism will be a huge issue.
At left, there is no serious candidate who is really at the left but the right candidate at right will be Francois Fillon ( a big reac conservative pro-life pro-Putine….) so we have all the chance to have Lepen against a big conservative and that will be difficult to vote for the leftist voters.

      • Gemma says:

You are right. Many leftists will just sit it out if the choice ends up being between Fillon and Le Pen. There is not much difference between these two apart for economic topics. Misère!

      • freebunny says:

Please, I don’t like Fillon, I’m one of those leftie who voted for Juppé, but even if he’s catholic he won’t change the abortion law.
And don’t even try to compare him to Trump.

      • Jane.fr says:

Let’s be honest here. Yes it sells papers to cry wolf, but M.Le Pen and France are not there yet.

First, for the primaries, what was high was the participation. So bull on the ” in France, the absenteeism will be a huge issue.”
Second, Fillon is a devoted catholic and does not believe in abortion. But he believe in respecting the existing laws, and has even, recently, voted IN FAVOUR of a law confirming the contraceptive and abortion laws in France and pushing for them in all Europe.

Third, and we’re not there yet, but if the worst were to come with a Fillon/Juppé against Le Pen, I hope, no, I trust that we would do what did in 2002 re:Le Pen/Chirac election. I trust that we would say (like 82% did then => https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_presidential_election,_2002 ) that’s not who we are.

Yes the situation is different, but again, have a non-biased look at the republicain primaries (And it still the first part only) : There was 7 candidates. Two were leaning to the far right, spouting racist and nationalist things. One of those two was the party number One, the former president of the country. They did not choose those two. They eliminated the two almost ultra-nationalist- ultra conservatives ones. They choose, reasonably moderated candidates I do not agree but can respect. If either one of them is elected, I, as a woman, as a black person, as a feminist, as a socialist, will not feel the need to claim #notmypresident.

So Yes, in France I (still) believe.

      • Timbuktu says:

        @Jane.fr
As a huge francofile, I don’t know if I can love France any more than I already do, but I would be enormously proud to see you stand up to extremism again.
You’re right, Le Pen/Chirac showed that you know where to draw the line – something that Americans have failed to do.

    • uninspired username says:

There was voter suppression, so that accounts for some of the people who didn’t participate.

  8. molly says:

Marion’s make up here is perfect. She has a beautiful face.

  9. thaliasghost says:

France, German, the Netherlands, Denmark are next. To consider that Merkel actually is the right wing neolibal nightmare that is seen as something positive by the world is beyond frightening.

Many years ago, French people saw themselves forced to elect Chiraq so they wouldn’t elect Le Pen’s father. Now it sounds frighteningly so as if Houllebecq’s novel might be not so far off.

  10. Ayra. says:

I don’t think Le Pen will be elected, while currently overcome by fear..her popularity rate with the younger voters and the 25 – 35 isn’t, for the majority, favorable. She’s known as the candidate NOT to elect. We’ll be stuck with either Filion or Juppé, but these are my early predictions, Macron is also quite popular.
My predictions for the french presidential elections have been relatively spot on, hopefully it continues.

(j’ai supprimé ma commentaire à propos de Sarko, hah)

  11. Ayra. says:

    double post.

  12. Pedro45 says:

May I just say that I really appreciate all of the commenters who post their thoughts about global politics and government? I’m not a totally ignorant American but I admit that I haven’t been following world affairs as much during our own elections. I find that I learn a lot from such insightful posts, even just as a starting point to look deeper. Thank you all.

  13. Yeahright says:

If she would have removed that jeweled pipe cleaner from the front of her dress, she woukd have been perfect!

  14. Horror says:

“Marine le Pen is ridiculously far-right. She’s been advocating the anti-immigrant, anti-Semitic, anti-Muslim policies for years. ”

The center-right likely candidate (Fillon) is actually to the right of le Pen on immigration and the economy. And he is probably going to be the next president.

    • JaneFr says:

      No he is not.
Could we please stop making me defend the other side candidate ? That’s the kind of gross exaggeration (at best) that make people want to not vote. Since they are all the same.
Fillon, which, again, is not my candidate and has not my support, far from it, is no neo fascist. Le Pen is. So please. Just. Stop.

      • Horror says:

Yes he is. I’m not a fan of Le Pen but she is more “progressive” on economic and social policies than he is. In fact her economic program could be called socialist.

Do some more research on him and read his programs. He is more right wing on social issues like immigration, abortion, and gay rights than she is.

Again, I am not a Le Pen fan. She is still a right winger and I lean left.

I, personally, hope that Macron pulls a surprise and wins. Everything is possible in this time.

      • hermia says:

She is not only a right winger, she’s also a fascist, like her father.
It’s fine to be right wing, as long as you don’t support fascism or worse.

  15. lol says:

    They look good.
