‘Allied’ made $18 million at the box office: is this a ‘bomb’ for Brad Pitt?

allied3

As some of you seem to want to discuss, Brad Pitt’s new movie, Allied, sort of bombed at the holiday box office. I had been keeping my eye on the reviews, and even the nice reviews were basically saying that Allied was a heavily stylized piece of fluff. The bad reviews said it was a dumb movie and Brad and Marion Cotillard had zero chemistry together. But did Allied really “bomb”? Well, it didn’t do as badly as Warren Beatty’s Rules Don’t Apply, which is perhaps the biggest bomb of the year. Rules Don’t Apply made $2.2 million over the five-day “holiday” weekend (Wednesday-Sunday). Over the same time period, Allied made $18 million. Which would have been a decent haul if it was some low-budget indie movie. But Robert Zemeckis spent $85 million on Allied. Ridiculous. Obviously, the big #1 film was Disney’s Moana, which made $81.1 million over the five-day holiday. Here’s the assessment of Allied’s box office from Variety:

While “Moana” thrived, other new releases weren’t as fortunate. Paramount’s “Allied” earned $18 million over the five-day period and $13 million for the weekend, a weak result given its $85 million budget. The film stars Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard as spies who marry only to have their love affair become entangled in a larger conspiracy. Robert Zemeckis (“Flight”) directed the picture.

Pitt has gone through a bruising divorce from Angelina Jolie that limited his participation in publicizing the film. The actor didn’t do the kind of television interviews or magazine spreads that might have helped raise “Allied’s” profile. The film also drew a much older crowd, with 39% of ticket-buyers coming in over the age of 50. Paramount suggested that might mean that its core group of ticket buyers may be slower to embrace the picture, even as it acknowledged that the results were disappointing.

“It’s just okay, and over Thanksgiving you always hope for something a little better than okay,” said Megan Colligan, Paramount’s head of marketing and distribution. “The bright spot is that there’s not a lot of competition in the marketplace over the next few weeks and our audience takes a minute to get to the theater.”

[From Variety]

It’s a little bit funny to me that Brad so badly wants to be seen as young, hip and sexy and it seems like his core audience – the audience who will show up to see one of his weaker offerings – is made up of 50-somethings. The audience probably watches The History Channel a lot. And NCIS. Anyway, I don’t really think $18 million is a “bomb.” I think it’s a really weak box office and I hope several people learned their lesson: don’t spend $85 million on a silly WWII movie. Don’t allow your star to refuse to do interviews. And don’t try to promote the film based off the “chemistry” of the two leads just hours after the lead’s wife files for divorce. Tacky!

It’s safe to say it bombed.
wtf is all the CGI in this movie, it Looks like a video game

    • Rhiley says:

Yeah, on the one hand it seems interesting, and sort of Casablancaish, but from what I have watched of the trailer I don’t get it. It is too shoot ’em up for my tastes. December usually has some good movies but doesn’t seem like there are any this year. I saw Fantastic Beasts and thought it was pretty good. Ezra Miller does creepy so well. Eddie Redmayne, I have decided, gets on my nerves as an actor. He acts in Beasts as he did The Danish Girl, which is a lot of soft talking and not looking the other actors in the eye.

      • jinni says:

I haven’t watched FB yet, but I have heard/read people say that they couldn’t get into his Newt and someone from the movie say he won’t be the focus of ever film. I wonder if that was always going to be the case or if this is due to the lukewarm reception of his Newt?

      • VirgiliaCoriolanus says:

I saw it last Thursday? I think it was opening night. But there is literally ONE scene (the one shown in the trailer) that is “shoot ’em up”….the rest is conversations, drama, etc. Quite honestly, what you saw in the trailer is pretty much it.

      • Harryg says:

Yes Redmayne is creepy! Can’t stand him! He should only play creepy villains.

      • tracking says:

I felt the same way about Redmayne. He’s wonderful in the right part, but was completely unengaging in Fantastic Beasts. Like Hugh Grant’s bumbling Brit schtick but without the charisma or charm.

      • I Choose Me says:

Dan Fogler stole every scene in Fantastic Beasts. His giggle during a certain scene gets me every time. Agree that Redmayne needs the right vehicle to shine. This wasn’t it.

    • Ana says:

Yes it bombed . $4.000 per theater is a bomb for a movie released in more then 3.000 locations.

    • Karen says:

I saw it, it was the only movie with the right time before dinner reservation. It had a good premise. But there was zero chemistry between them: I didn’t see love or even lust… so I didn’t connect with the story.

And I also did not care for the cinematography – it was 2 hours long but maybe 30 minutes was just the camera lingering or taking arcs-movements or circlular movements around the scenery or actors. Lots of circles – I’m sure they found it profound, I found it distracting.

  2. BJ says:

I guess it can almost break even if it does well abroad.I don’t think it will make a profit.I don’t think they spent much on advertising budget.I only saw about three or four commercials.

    • Carmen says:

It will have to make $200 mil to break even. I don’t see that happening. I think people are tiring of WW2 movies in general, especially one with advance bad reviews.

      • V4Real says:

“I think people are tiring of WW2 movies in general, especially one with advance bad reviews.”

Maybe not, maybe it’s just this one because Hacksaw Ridge opened 11/20 and has already grossed over 50 mil domestically.

      • Carmen says:

Hacksaw Ridge had great advance buzz. Allied, not so much. I wonder if the divorce mess has hurt the box office.

  3. Pri says:

Guys…is the movie star officially dead? It seems like Tom Hanks is the last one, which I totally don’t mind.

Tom was delightful on Graham Norton. It was the first good Graham Norton episode of the season.

    • Mia4S says:

The movie star is mostly dead, concept is king. Very few people go to see the new “Name Actor” movie unless the concept interests them. But anyone in something with “Star Wars” attached and you crash ticket buying systems. The last domain of the movie star is the international box office.

      • V4Real says:

“But anyone in something with “Star Wars” attached and you crash ticket buying systems.”

        Or Marvel…LOL.

    • Stacey says:

Yeah I have to agree with this. Plot/story are key rather than who is starring in that movie. Anyone could have starred in Fantastic Beasts and it would have been a monster hit. Same with Moana and any superhero movie.

Even Tom Hanks couldn’t save Inferno though – it only made $33 million here but Sully made over $100 million domestically. Go figure.

    • Jellybean says:

I agree, there are no names that guarantee box office anymore. I would say Dwayne Johnson in a typical Dwayne Johnson film is probably as reliable as it gets, although there will always be a solid if not spectacular audience for Tom Cruise films.

  4. paolanqar says:

I am not planning to go see this movie but I have seen ‘Fantastic beasts and where to find them’.
    I LOVED it.

Can’t wait to see the other 2 films.. I actually miss Harry Potter a lot and this is just too good to be true.

    • swak says:

My daughter saw it in 3D and now wants to see it without the 3D. She loved it but said the 3D made it hard to concentrate on other things in the movie. She’s totally excited for the next films.

    • LadyMTL says:

I saw Fantastic Beasts this Saturday and I liked it (the visuals were amazing) but I found that the story was way too scattered. One review I read on another site said it felt like two separate movies that were fused together, and I agree. A bit of streamlining / paring down wouldn’t have hurt anything, IMHO.

That said, I am looking forward to the rest of them, mainly because I can’t wait to see younger Dumbledore…I won’t say more, just in case of spoilers.

      • paolanqar says:

The story was a bit weird in my opinion too.. but maybe is only early days?
I was mesmerized by all the animals and that Queenie character.
I can’t wait to see young Dumbledore and maybe Ariana and Abesforth too.

    • Saks says:

I know! I loved it to! I am from the HP generation (10 when the first one), so I’ll see everything Rowling puts out there. It was funny how all the people my age in the cinema were the most excited about it, and the gasps and whispers everytime a Howarts reference was made.

  5. Lama Bean says:

Gracious he looks good. Makeup really takes twenty years off his face.

    • tracking says:

He had work done prior to filming this movie.

    • Whiskeyjack says:

I agree, lama bean. I’m over here thinking that he looks about 35ish? Crazy. I wonder if they can film entire movies with filters like Snapchat has? Because that’s what it looks like to me. lol

  6. SusanneToo says:

Does anything other than kids’ movies or superhero/fantasy movies or smash n crash movies do giant B.O. anymore? I plan to see both Allied and Rules this week and, yeah, I’m older. We only have one arts theatre in town and it can’t book all the indies I love, so if the multiplex shows a movie aimed at adults, I’m there.

  7. spidey says:

Friend went to see it this week and wasn’t impressed either with the film or Brad’s acting.

    • third ginger says:

Is ARRIVAL playing near you, Spidey? We saw this on Thanksgiving with our girls [daughter and partner] I am not the sci-fi fan in the family, but this is terrific and very smart with a wonderful Amy Adams performance.

      • M.A.F. says:

I saw Arrival over Thanksgiving Break. I liked it. I’ve noticed I have started to rank movies on whether or not I would buy it once it comes out on DVD. This is one, I would buy it.

    • tracking says:

A number of reviews skewered his performance. Imo he’s always been a stronger character actor than leading man. Other than with Jolie in MMS, I can’t think of any movie where he’s had great romantic chemistry with the female lead (and that was pure heat rather than romantic per se).

      • Sage says:

I agree, Brad is a great character actor!

I liked his chemistry with Cate Blanchett in Benjamin Button.

      • DuckGoose says:

So true–I have always said he is a great character actor (12 Monkeys, Thelma & Louise) and he would be so much better at his craft if he stuck to the interesting characters and not the leading man type roles.

      • Carmen says:

Agreed. I thought he was very good in “Killing Them Softly” and “The Counselor”.

  8. Tia says:

I thought about going to see it and then went to see Fantastic Beasts instead. The next day I thought about seeing it and saw A United Kingdom instead. It’s not a film I have completely ruled out seeing, it’s just that there are other films I want to see more and I can’t fit in all of them.

  9. jinni says:

I am not 50, but the History channel (which use to be one of my fave channel back in the day) barely even shows anything about history anymore. It’s all Ancient Aliens and reality shows. A waste.

    • Lacia Can says:

Yes. Just like A&E has degenerated (though I love the First 48). Can you imagine either of them showing something like Horatio Hornblower these days? Nope. There’s a new series called “Frontier” about the fur trade in NA. It’s on the Discovery channel. Doesn’t that sound like something the History Channel should have shown?

Maybe it’s time to retire the WW2 movie. Very few people GAF about history (thus the decline of the channel), and as those who lived during WW2 pass away it becomes less relevant to the general public. Not saying that’s the way it should be. But even as a history buff I have no real interest in paying to see this movie. I’ll watch it on TV or Netflix. Maybe I’m just war storied out after Remembrance Day.

      • jinni says:

Thanks for the heads up about Frontier, that sounds like something I could get into. You are right about A&E, don’t even get me started on Bravo. That was such an about face in terms of programming. They were the channel that got me into independent film, foreign films, and period pieces ( especially Merchant Ivory movies). Now the only thing that similar to its original concept is the name.

I also agree about WW2 movies. There are so many good documentaries on it why bother watching a generic script about a time in history that has been done before many times and much better than this movie? If it was about an experience during that war that hasn’t been played out like what it was like for non-whites/ non-Jews while living in occupied areas, maybe, but how many WW2 spy movies do we really need?

      • Lacia Can says:

Jinni- FYI, it’s on a different channel in the US, I believe. It’s not a time covered very often – the Revenant was the first in ages.

Can I just say I think the beautiful Resistance spy has been overdone? Women were shamefully treated within the Resistance; I just can’t get into any films about it for that reason.

  10. Maya says:

“Brad so badly wants to be seen hip, sexy & young”

Even though Brad is not one of my favourite people at the moment – this is silly.

Please tell me in which of his movies the last decade has he showed that?

WWZ, By the Sea, Fury, Curious Case of BB, Tree of life – his roles were wonderful and is not young, sexy & hip.

    • Mia4S says:

“Brad so badly wants to be seen hip, sexy & young”

I actually agree that this really isn’t true. It’s a much better description of Tom Cruise.

They’ll make money internationally but it’s certainly not a hit. Poor Rules Don’t Apply, that is BRUTAL!

    • MrsBPitt says:

I agree, Maya! Brad hasn’t taken any “hip, sexy, and young” roles, for ages….Allied, expecially, was more old fashioned, than anything else…

    • Ana says:

That look at the Golden Globes last year and the after party chatting with Selena Gomez says that kaisser is correct. He wants to be seen hip, sexy and young..

  11. Jesie says:

This seems like one of those films that was massively over-budgeted. For the type of film it is, going up against two huge family films and a new-ish Marvel release on a big holiday weekend, it did very well, but because someone thought it was a good idea to spend almost 100 million on it its a bomb. It could have been made for 35-40 million without losing much, and then it would be a hit.

Studios need to stop giving these counter-programming adult dramas crazy budgets.

    • Stacey says:

I agree with you on the release timing. I think they were trying to get ahead of the December pack of movies to get Oscar buzz but it failed big time. The movie is a huge mess (IMHO).

  12. Andrea1 says:

And don’t try to promote the film based off the “chemistry” of the two leads just hours after the lead’s wife files for divorce. Tacky!
very very tacky….. and yes it was a bomb for a five day result

    • Ana says:

That trailer in that day was a humiliation for both Angelina and her children. Pitt probably agree with Paramount because he and Grey are big friends.

  13. MrsBPitt says:

I didn’t see it, because, I thought the trailer looked like a snoozefest. And, I also, didn’t see much chemistry between MC and BP. Granted, I only saw the trailer, and maybe they did have chemistry in the movie. I just wasn’t feeling it….Movies cost a lot of money these days, and I have to REALLY want to see something before I spend my hard earned cha-ching on a piece of crap.

Has anyone seen the trailer for Split? I know it’s an M. Night Shyamalan movie, and that ususally means, BEWARE, THIS MOVIE IS A PIECE OF CRAP, but, it’s been getting some pretty good reviews, and James McAvoy looks amazing in it!!!

  14. Jenni says:

Could be worse… like *cough* “By the sea” *cough*.

    • Ana says:

Rule number one – never compare a wide release with a limited one.

      • L says:

        Agree with Ana.

      • Jesie says:

BTS bombed real hard even for a limited release. It brought in under $100,000 on 10 screens it’s opening weekend and barely eked out $500,000 domestically. That’s atrocious. Small indies you’ve never heard of starring people you can’t name regularly do significantly better opening on 4-5 screens.

    • BonnieJean says:

      Oh Jenni…I agree.

      • Paige says:

BTS bombed but it’s a horrible comparison. And of course you agree Bonnie Jean.

I’ll support it because it’s Brad but to be honest people are tired of War films. We don’t need anymore especially from Brad. A few reviews mentioned Brad War movie fatigue. Maybe it will break even with China.

    • YepIsaidIt says:

A better comparison is The Tourist. oops! Even that did better than allied and was considered a bomb.

So yes, allied is a bomb and many of the movies sites were saying this movie would prove if his divorce impacted his career. Yes, it did 😂

      • tracking says:

Eh, I think it’s more that he’s older and not a hot leading man any longer. As with Clooney, time to pass that torch. Though she is a wonderful actress and a beauty, Marion isn’t a hot leading lady either. The fact that they apparently have no chemistry just sealed it. Really not surprising that the film is appealing to an older middle-aged demographic, who don’t generally fill seats the way younger demographics do.

  15. Ana says:

    Kaiser – This is perfection

” And don’t try to promote the film based off the “chemistry” of the two leads just hours after the lead’s wife files for divorce. Tacky! “

  16. OSTONE says:

Also, people need something to escape the current state of affairs. Who wants to see a WW2 movie when you have a Harry Potter spin off and a brand new Disney movie? To top that off with Brad’s divorce/lack of press tour, the fact Marion while recognized and talented, is not a box office draw and then meh reviews, no wonder it “only” made 18 million.

  17. Kaye says:

I saw this movie on Thanksgiving Day, and it was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. There’s no chemistry between the leads, there’s no humor, no “lightness” at all. Yes, I understand it’s a serious movie, but this was just deadly. Brad looked like he was just going through the motions.

  18. YepIsaidIt says:

People who have seen it say Brad either had Botox or they used cgi to erase his wrinkles. Lol

Also, his acting is horrible and Mc was fantastic but she could not save the movie. He’s a lot better in quarky goofball roles not serious drama.

If the tourist was considered a bomb with a 3 day of 16m allied is a bomb with a 12-13m 3 days.

18 is the total for 5 days.

    • Ana says:

The Tourist was not a bomb. The opening was bad but the movie made 278M WW

      • YepIsaidit says:

The media pounced on that opening weekend as a big bombed because two A listers should open a movie to more $. no articles about how a romantic Brad Pitt movie should do way more than 12 or 13m opening weekend. The public is over him- he’s gonna have to set up photo -ops with Kate Hudson and her kids to get some attention. Lol

    • Zut alors! says:

Allied bombed. It didn’t do much better in the countries they went to promote it. $2.8 million in France, $1.6 million in the U.K. and $1.3 million in Spain.

  19. Ellie says:

I’m 33 and watch NCIS regularly) and Law and Order SVU. However, I won’t go see this movie which is absolutely not my genre and won’t go see this Harry Potter sequel/prequel either. Other that I’m not passionate about the HP series, there is something about the lead that rubs me the wrong way.

  20. AG-UK says:

I saw it as our movie outing the day after Thanksgiving.. my friends liked it, Marion is beautiful but I was bored and he looked weird to me.

  21. Sage says:

It was an above average romantic/drama movie. It was not thrilling or over loaded with action. The ending was sad.

Marion was fantastic and carried the movie in the first half, Brad carried the second half. The supporting cast was nonexistent. The costume and cinematography was beautiful, I expect that team will be acknowledged during award season.

  22. ;) says:

At least it wasn’t as bad as By The Sea.

  23. mkyarwood says:

This was a ‘who cares’ movie for me from the beginning. I’m so over white world war 2 love stories. Or most WW2 stories. I last liked Brad as that gym trainer, in Burn After Reading. I don’t take him seriously as a serious actor. A story that IS relevant and does catch my interest tho, is Hidden Figures!! Being treated disgustingly in the IMDB boards, before it’s even out. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4846340/board/nest/259503747?ref_=tt_bd_2

    • AmunetMaat says:

I never visit IMDB for “Black” movies. The messages on the boards are always racist, which enrages me because no one is flooding “white” movies with disgusting comments. I can’t wait to see Hidden Figures.

    • Lalu says:

We went to see fb this weekend and the trailer for Hidden Figures played. I was holding back tears. It made me really emotional for some reason. Anyway, as we were leaving the theater, I told my husband and son that I want to see it. I never want to actually go to the movie. They dragged me to see fb. Love Costner and it just looked like a great freaking movie.

  24. Sera says:

I enjoyed By The Sea but i pretty machine Angelina in anything. As for Brad I hope that he shows some respect to Angelina.

  25. green says:

I love BTS , a small budget limited release film. Brad is good in it.

  26. Lalu says:

I think the trailer was scheduled to release on a certain day. I don’t really think that was tacky of anyone that had anything to do with the film. How were they supposed to know that Pitt’s wife was going to file for divorce when she did. And what’s with the idea that he wants to be seen as young and hip? Dude has 6 kids. It seems like going out of the way to rewrite who he is now that the greatest love of our time is over. Pretty ridiculous.

  27. Lalu says:

I also have to say… Holy smokes… His face in these pics… Dude bought a new face. He doesn’t even look the same now as these pics. He looks so much better showing age. Or sober. Whichever. He actually looks decent now.

  28. seesittellsit says:

Saw it over the weekend: stylish but weak script. Not surprised at who the audience is: given the abysmal state of teaching history in our public schools, the WWII era is likely to be a mystery to the younger crowd – I’d bet a month’s salary half or more of our high school population doesn’t even know that The Blitz refers to.

  29. Penelope says:

Brad’s looking great & I’m definitely going to see this.

  30. iheartjacksparrow says:

I read a couple of box office weekend wrap-ups which stated something along the lines of Allied was the movie that broke up Brad’s marriage.

  31. sophie says:

I saw it only because my date wanted to. I thought the movie was slow and Brad’s acting was awful. One critic described it as “wooden” and I totally agree. I also couldn’t get over his new face. There was a scene where his character (although all I could see was Brad Pitt with a new face) was supposed to be angry and he stood up and kicked a chair – there was no emotion whatsoever. It almost seemed like he was just going through the motions. There was no chemistry between them.

  32. Horror says:

Who wants to see another spy movie with Brad Pitt?

    • sage says:

      I do..

    • dj says:

Actually, I would have seen this movie. However, I did not because the filming looked too Photoshopped like a video game or something. It was off putting and I knew it would take me out of the story. I saw Fantastic Creatures and it was OK. It was kind of a mess of confusing storylines. Dan Fogler was the big star. He was really relatable, funny, engaging and wonderful! Redmayne was a miscast. Fine Frenzy is the name of the actress that played his love interest and she was wonderful too. If the film would have been more focused on those two characters it would have been a much better movie. Just my opinion.
