Is Serena Williams already shopping for frou-frou lace wedding gowns?

Bear necessities

I’ve been missing Serena Williams. She pulled out of Indian Wells and the Miami Open because of a knee injury, and many are wondering if she’ll play at all during the clay-court season. Considering she made the final of the French Open last year, I would assume she’s going to try to make it again this year, but who knows? It feels like Serena plays fewer and fewer tournaments every year, possibly because A) she only really cares about Slams at this point and B) she has a full life outside of tennis. Speaking of that full life, Serena still isn’t talking much about her engagement to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. The vibe I got from Serena a few months ago was that she wasn’t really focused on planning a wedding and we should settle in for a long engagement. But then she Instagrammed this photo of a wedding gown this week:

Romantic lace. Very pretty. #inspired #fashion

Is she already shopping for a wedding gown? And is this the gown? Is the wedding happening sooner than anyone expected??? Just my opinion: Serena won’t marry Alexis before Wimbledon. Right? She’ll want to focus on Wimbledon. Fingers crossed. I also don’t think this dress is all that? I’ll be super-disappointed if Serena’s wedding gown is some frou-frou lace doily.

Meanwhile, the Romanian Fed Cup captain, Ilie Nastase, lodged a major slam against Serena last week and I’m sort of shocked by how little press there is around Nastase’s charge. Nastase said (in Romanian, in a press conference) that Serena “looks” like someone on steroids and that Americans get away with a lot of stuff because of the sponsors and advertising. Nastase literally provided no proof for this accusation beyond “look at her.”

At this point since Serena is one of our generation’s GOATs, I am almost surprised when someone isn’t making a dig at her. But as always she keeps it classy and just wipes the floor of her competition/haters. She is true boss!

  2. SilverUnicorn says:

I hate all the attacks on this wonderful athlete. The fact nobody talked about Nastase’s remarks are down to 1) sexism 2) racism
Take a seat Ilie, could never stomach you anyway.

(I’m shaped that muscly too, never took steroids!! Take a seat old man!)

    P.S. I’m a lace-girl, I would love the gown 🙂

    • Nancito says:

Ya, I guess the real reason that Nastase is making these baseless claims is because he is just channeling his inner Donald Trump. Or worse, he’s seen how much publicity Trump gets when he goes on a rant and he is just trying to drum up interest in Romanian tennis. Not for nothing was his nickname “Nasty” when he was on the pro tennis circuit.

Of Course this horse is trotting again as the day ends in Y *eyerolls for the Pre loser*

That Said Serena’s fashions through the years are…. well……God Bless she really didn’t pick much flattering stuff until she got with The Ciara/Kardashian/Lala ‘s Crew)

ALSO …I don’t think we’re seeing the real gown and I also have assorted other thoughts on this: If Richard isn’t well I predict she will get married while he still can be a Part of it, for all their sh*t with him they seem like dutiful daughters, Also Isn’t she a Witness? her dress or at least ceremony dress will NOT be showing a TON I assume/ I predict an Outfit Change for these reasons cause Serena Is UNAPOLOGETIC about being Comfortable in her skin/shape/ and a Low Key High Key Thirst Trap!

    • TryingToThink says:

Serena is a tennis ace. It doesn’t matter what she wears. She has merits in tennis and sport and personality and character anyway.
Only vacuous women like Kate Middleton try to express their merits in clothes (and faily horribly).

I hope she picks a wedding dress that she loves, and has a wonderful wedding day.

That said, I like to think that few people are paying attention to that Romanian dude’s comments because it’s so obviously laughable sour grapes bullshit, that it doesn’t deserve serious consideration.

i confess this is the first time i am, literally, excited over another womans wedding dress. i cannot wait to see what this goddess chooses.

  6. LaraK says:

I actually happy people are not talking about the Romanian’s crap. Talking about it can legitimize it. Ignoring it on the other hand just shows that nobody buys it.

    • kay says:

i am sure serena can’t hear that nonsense past the sound of her own remarkable, and non stop, winning of life. fahk.
she is a rare class act, especially considering how much envy fuelled bullshit has been flung at her.
“sorry haters, busy being awesome, but do carry on in your echo chamber”.

I love me some cheesy lace doily wedding dress. When else in your life can you look totally over the top? It’s just once. I say go for it on your wedding day. So exciting! Can’t wait for CB wedding coverage. If this is her dress, I don’t hate it. I hope she goes all out.

  8. Susan says:

That looks like inspiration for her veil, not her dress.

    • KiddVicious says:

That’s what I was thinking, it looks like the veil, and gorgeous. It would look great with a sleek, form fitting, dress, I can’t imagine Serena wanting a princess ball gown.

    • Lilybugg says:

Agree. It’s the veil. And it is gorgeous.

  9. Odette says:

Get ready to yell at me. This will not be a popular opinion, here.

Look, the majority of professional athletes dope. It’s just a fact. This Ilie woman probably dopes herself. Nobody thought Lance Armstrong doped, and….

    • KiddVicious says:

Ilie Nastase is a man and was one of the top tennis players in the early 70’s. If I remember correctly, he was always a bit of an ass, sometimes being referred to as Illie Nasty.

      • Odette says:

I stand corrected — this Ilie guy probably doped himself.

        But, my opinion still stands.

Plus, just to point out, it says in this post that she didn’t enter the tournaments because of a knee injury. But, a few months back, she announced that she was going to drop out of tournaments — nothing about a knee injury; instead, she was “tired of playing tournaments unhealthy” — even though she didn’t play many tournaments the previous year. Coincidentally, her announcement came around the same time that the Tennis doping regulators announced changes, specifically getting rid of “silent bans.” Moreover, she has had backdated therapeutic use exemptions — and oddly locked herself in a panic room when a random drug tester showed up at her house. A lot of this mirrors Lance Armstrong’s behavior.

Like cycling and swimming, tennis is known to have a pervasive doping culture.

    • TryingToThink says:

      @ Odette

      I believe that, too.
Really good athletes who get into national championships will meet equally talented athletes at those national championships. And those who use doping right have a huge advantage. That is just too tempting when an athlete just can’t improve despite hard training. I know because a distant acquaintance of ours is a bloody good athlete (swimming is hers). But she told us that she had to train for weeks to improve her time by a few fractions (we are talking seconds and fractions of seconds here). That can be very depressing.

So yeah, I like sports though I am no good at it. I even like watching sports. But not for one second do I believe that most athletes on international levels were clean. Nope, I don’t buy it.

I am not indication that the Williams sisters used drugs or anything. I am just sceptical and have researched quite a lot on the internet. Just don’t buy everything the mass media is trying to shove down our throats.
