Did Harry Styles write a new anthem for bisexual men, and come out as bisexual?

Harry Styles appears on the 'X Factor'

Harry Styles had a concert in Paris this week and he performed a new song! And now his die-hard fans are wondering if this new song is Harry’s big “coming out” as a bisexual. The song is called “Medicine” and the lyrics in question are: “The boys and the girls are here/ I mess around with him/ And I’m OK with it.” Here’s the video:

I’ve listened to the beginning a few times now and I honestly can’t figure out if he’s singing “I mess around with HIM” or if he’s singing “I mess around with THEM.” I actually think he’s singing-slurring it a little bit and singing “I mess around with ‘em/’im” on purpose? If he’s saying he messes around with THEM the result is the same though – he’s messing around with boys and girls.

Harry has long been the subject of slash fan-fiction and honestly, the 1Ders have such elaborate conspiracies about Harry’s same-sex romances, I didn’t even bother to keep up with them. I think the diehard 1Ders believed that Harry was in a romantic relationship with at least one of the One Direction guys, though. But the thing is, Harry has never really acted as if those rumors upset him – he’s publicly dated women and he’s always publicly stood up for LGBTQ people too. It’s good that the kidz have a young man in the public sphere who is referencing his bisexuality. Good for Harry.

That’s one of the reasons why I’ve always liked Harry, despite not being a 1D fan. Never has a bad word to say about anyone, seems to treat everyone with respect, and handles controversies like this as total non-issues (which they are).

    • Bread and Circuses says:

Yeah, Simon Cowell may be a dog, but I do think he schooled those boys well in what fame would entail and how to handle it, and Harry has always struck me also as the one who absorbed the “be a gentleman always” lesson the best.

  2. Heat says:

It’ll be a really great day for humanity when stories like this are no longer newsworthy.

  3. HelloSunshine says:

He honestly seems like a good person. You can tell when people are putting on a front (notnamingnamestaylorswiftlenadunhametcetc) and he genuinely seems like a nice and good person who cares about his fans and if he can positively affect others.

    Do it, Harry!

  5. Krill says:

Could be coming out or could be fan service. His boy group did this for years. Going off in fan popular pairs and playing it up like boyfriends. They would change lyrics on stage to hint at stuff and sing romantic lines at each other. At interviews, they were all clearly urged to be excessively tactile. Hands on thighs, stroking faces, legs intertwined. Show me a girl group that acts that way? The gay baiting drove their fans into conspiracy ridden frenzies and kept them buying tickets.

Harrys music career didnt quite take off, just saying. Fan service is a powerful tool.

    • Red says:

I’ve always thought he was bi, but I do agree that the timing of this song being released could be played off as fan service. His tour is just starting, and his album did not do as great as they hoped it would. I could be biased though, I don’t trust any guy that dated Taylor Swift AND Kendall Jenner. You’ve got to be obsessed with attention to be interested in both.

      • N. says:

The thing is, Harry is still neck-deep in a contract he signed when he was just 16. Or, his mother signed it without really knowing what it meant.
He has never been in the driver’s seat of his career, none of the boys are.
They do what they’re told to do, nothing more and nothing less. That extends to Taylor Swift, Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid and Cheryl Whatshername. Obviously.

      • Meggles says:

I honestly doubt that’s true. I’m not a 1D fan but wasn’t there some huge fuss from the conspiracy theorists who believe in fake babies and all that over the men signing new contracts or contracts with new companies, when all along they’d been insisting when the contracts ran out they’d announce they were secretly married and had been faking all their relationships and kids the entire time?

Besides there is no such thing as a closeting or bearding contract. It simply does not exist. Closeting and bearding happen (I know a few actors who have decided to remain closeted to help their careers) but only because the person in question chooses to do so, or is coerced by being told it’s the only way to ‘make it’ in the entertainment industry. You cannot legally compel anyone to break the law which is what the tinhats insist. Any contract that tried to enforce anything illegal would automatically be invalidated. Besides tinhats be acting like contracts are some kind of Harry Potter unbreakable vow or something. A contract is just a piece of paper. Break a contract and the worse that can happen is you get sued. Harry is a major celeb and a squillionaire. He has access to the best lawyers. If he’d been tricked into signing a bad contract while underage he could easily go to court to break it. Besides if he was being cruelly forced to closet all he’d need to do is make one single public statement saying “I’m being forced to do this awful thing against my will” and there’d be such a tidal wave of public opinion it would almost certainly destroy the careers of whoever responsible.

      • N. says:

@Meggles: Wow, you must have read a lot of fanfiction. Wow.

I know about their contract because I got offered a similar contract and I was told they all look pretty much alike for X-Factor contestants.
Of course there is no clause that specifically refers to bearding, there never is. But there are more than enough clauses that leave you no choice but to do what you are told unless you want to get sued six ways to sunday and end up neck deep in debt.

You can’t choose where to perform or when. You can’t choose how they portray you in the media (nice girl or nasty b…) and you have no rights to your own face anymore. They even get to decide what you wear and whether you’re allowed to cut your hair. The same goes for any content that you want to put out, whether it may be music or a movie or a book or even just an interview with a tabloid rag. Not gonna happen unless they allow it.
But of course you can never complain about being screwed over, either because there are specific clauses forbidding you from ever speaking out or critizing the the big guns like Simon Cowell.

Just to put it into perspective: I was not allowed to leave their office with the contract to read it over at home. Of course they didn’t deny me the assistance of a lawyer but the only one present was on their payroll. And none of the contestants had the money to pay for a lawyer driving out to the studio. Which means, a lot of kids singed contracts without knowing what they were getting into.
I didn’t sign that day, simply because I had friends with me who were creeped out and saved me from making a horrible mistake.

Forget abut your fanfiction and face reality. If any of those kids who singed the contracts were told to get themselves a fake girlfriend, the’d have no chance but to go along with it. Hook, line and sinker.

Or, you could ask Kesha about how it feels to be contractually forced to work with your rapist. Ask her how she got out. Oh wait, she didn’t get out. She’s still trapped because that’s the way those contracts are designed.

This. This was OD’s MO for ages, so I’m a little hesitant to cheer for this straight away. I mean, I like him and he seems like a nice guy – and if this messaging has a positive impact on how his fans view other people, then great. BUT I also wonder how much of this has to do with his solo career being completely eclipsed by Zayn, and Harry’s tour…the timing is…curious.

      • Daisy says:

It kinda depends of the way you look at their careers. If you go by streams or single sales then Zayn is doing better, but if you go by album sales, then Harry is doing waaay better. In the UK he sold more albums in one week than Zayn did since he released his album in 2016.
My point is, they both are doing great in their completely difference music genres,

    • exxie says:

actually, it is not true. zayn choose a very populer and radio friendly style and gained a supermodel and papped like crazy. Harry chose an old style, a single that is too long for radio and very limited pr. and he did good, not radio friendly but good. i am a little biased because i really dont like zayn’s mumbling music (maybe i am too old for that kind) and my roots are pretty similiar to Zayn so his looks are kinda normal for me. But Harry willingly choose a different path for himself and it slike comparing apples to oranges with H and Z.

      • Clare says:

So…what exactly is not true then?

One record was more successful than the other, yes?

OD has a history of adding fuel to fan fiction about intra-band romances, yes?

It’s plausible that this MAY be Fan service, yes?

      • knotslaning says:

Agreed. Harry has received more critical success than the other boys, and seems to be better liked by the public in general. So, for anyone to say he hasn’t had much success would be incorrect. I was surprised to hear his music mentioned on a music podcast I listen to because the hosts can be pretentious at times, and they said some great things about the album he released. I think Harry has much more staying power than the others!

    • sarah says:

One hundred percent agree. His album underperformed to the expectations his team set for him; his album sales did not produce and this tour did not sell out (far from it – there are many tickets on StubHub). He goes hard with the sex drugs and rock n roll imagery and persona, but trots out the Larry stuff when he needs a boost. Some parts of the fandom love it because they were really invested in that during the 1D days, so it works for him. Some parts of the general public respond to the “victoria’s secret model womanizer” image and the Kiwi lyrics. He’s playing all sides.

  6. Louise177 says:

It seems unfair to label somebody on the basis of a lyric and not being offended by the LGBTQ community. Especially since “mess around ” doesn’t mean it’s sexual.

    • MellyMel says:

Where I’m from, saying you “messed around” with someone is most definitely sexual.

  7. Tiffany says:

Eh, Harry has always be a keep on keeping on type of person.

If it’s true, not surprising because of who he is.

    • Bucketbot says:

@Tiffany “Harry has always be a keep on keeping on type of person”
What does this mean, if you don’t mind?

      • Tiffany says:

He seems to do his thing and continue to do so.

Example, when the rumors about his sexuality, he is not out there sending out press releases every hour on the hour or doubling down to disprove it. That and his support of the LGBT community, he just keeps on.

  8. Daisy says:

He did say in a interview that he never felt the need to label himself. So bisexual or not, it really isn’t a surprise he likes men.
And I liked the song too.

  9. anon says:

He clearly said “I mess around with HIM” in a new live performance from yesterday. I don’t want to assume but I actually think he’s bi. Good for him to “talk” about it this way. He seems chill and nice.

  10. Diane says:

To me coming out is a statement. Saying something and feeling great about saying who you are and what you like. This seems way too vague and ambiguous. Just enough to get people to talk but not enough to actually commit to anything. Not a coming out……ima
