Angelina Jolie took Vivienne & Knox to see the rebooted ‘Tomb Raider’ this weekend

Angelina Jolie visits The Louvre with her children

We don’t have these photos, but you can see them here at the Daily Mail. Angelina Jolie took Knox and Vivienne to see Tomb Raider over the weekend. I find that… very classy. For years, circa 2005-2010-ish, there were rumors that the studio wanted to make another Lara Croft movie with Angelina. I don’t know exactly what happened, but I suspect that Jolie decided for herself that she was mostly done with the character, or she and the studio could never come to an agreement about what could be done for a third film. So plans for a Tomb Raider reboot went ahead without Jolie, but with her blessing. And now Angelina is taking her youngest children to watch her Tomb Raider successor, even though there are some in the rebooted-Croft camp who seem hellbent on throwing shade at the OG Lara.

As for Tomb Raider’s opening weekend… well, it basically met expectations. Box office trackers said, last week, that it would probably open with $20-25 million domestically, and it made $23.5 million and came in second behind Black Panther, which is still #1 for the fifth week in a row. Tomb Raider is a huge international success though.

Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther continued to make history in its fifth weekend at the domestic box office with a haul of $27 million, burying Tomb Raider and becoming only the seventh film ever to cross the $600 million mark in North America. Black Panther is the first film since Avatar eight years ago to top the chart for five consecutive weekends, and only the third pic to do so in 19 years after Avatar and The Sixth Sense. The Disney and Marvel superhero movie finished Sunday with a domestic total of $605.4 million and $1.182 billion globally. In the U.S., it is only days away from overtaking fellow Marvel film The Avengers ($623 million) to become the top-grossing superhero pic of all time in North America, unadjusted for inflation.

Tomb Raider’s muted domestic bow of $23.5 million from 3,854 theaters is a disappointment for Warner Bros. and MGM, which partnered in rebooting the female-led franchise that is based on the videogame. In the early 2000s, the Tomb Raider film series — starring Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft — beat the curse that continues to haunt videogame adaptations.

Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug (The Wave) directed the new Tomb Raider, which stars Alicia Vikander opposite Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu and Kristin Scott Thomas. The $90 million film earned a mediocre B CinemaScore, potentially hurting word of mouth. Females made up just 44 percent of ticket buyers.

The movie did make up ground overseas, topping the foreign weekend chart with $84.5 million from 65 markets for an overseas tally of $102.5 million and $126 million globally. That includes a first-place finish in China with $41.1 million.

“I really hoped we would do more than $25 million domestically, but the fact that we were No. 1 globally is terrific news,” says Warners domestic distribution chief Jeff Goldstein. “We always viewed this as an international play.”

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

I remember when Angelina’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider made close to $50 million in its opening weekend and everyone was like “whoa, this is a thing and Angelina can carry a movie.” Again, this film (Tomb Raider) is going to end up making money for the studio, so it’s not going to be an embarrassment for anyone involved. But I do wonder if there will be any kind of appetite for a sequel?

How are they even sure Angie & the kids went to watch that?..Anywho She(Angie)passed on another Lara Croft movie years back,so I bet she’s cool with the Alicia version.

    • LetItGooo says:

Dang. Angie’s opening did twice as much and that was back in 2001 dollars. Well it should re-coup, the Vikander version, but no sequel money for Alicia though.

  2. tracking says:

$126 million globally doesn’t seem too terrible. Due to all the bad CGI, I have no interest in seeing it in theaters, but I’ll rent it once it’s streaming.

  3. Mia4s says:

I saw it over the weekend. It was pretty good, but nothing special and definitely nothing new or unique. I would be surprised if there are sequels….that box office is fine but not buzz worthy. At the end it was more “well, that was cute” than “OMG Can’t wait for the next one!”. My guess is the box office drops will reflect that.

    • DesertReal says:

      Ditto.
It was an okay one and done flick. Entertaining, even with its flaws. Their LC wasn’t as…tough or accomplished. But I was just grateful my 15 year old stepdaughter really liked it- as she didn’t want to see Wonder Woman or Black Panther (infinitely better flicks).

      • citney says:

I watched the original Tomb Raider again this week-end on Netflix, Angie was really badass and sassy as Lara.
I found it hilarious how Angie had to fake an English accent, while Daniel Craig had to fake an American accent.

Angie looked so young, actually she looked younger than Alicia, which would be only natural since Alicia is 5 years older than Angie when the first LC was filmed.

From everything I know about Angie, she would be the last person to want Alicia’s version of LC to fail. If only other celebrities in Hollywood were as generous.

As for the BO, it seems as if Alicia’s version did about the same as the sequel Angie did.

  4. Patricia says:

I was only considering seeing it because that actor who is also in the show Vice Principles is in it, his name escapes me but he is so so funny.
But then I was like… naw.

It’s nice Angie took her little girls. She looked tired as hell in those pics going to the theater which is rather relatable as a mother haha.

    • LadyT says:

Walter Goggins and yes he is fantastic. He had a bit part at the beginning of Justified and was so magnetic that they rewrote and kept him throughout the entire run of the series.

      • Patricia says:

Magnetic is a great word for him. I was TRANSFIXED with him on Vice Principles. And I laughed so much watching that show, much needed comedy therapy. Thanks for the name!

      • Tulip Garden says:

Walton goggins, not walter. Also he is the best!

      • LadyT says:

        Whoops. Thanks.

      • Tulip Garden says:

        Lady t ,
Your welcome! I memorized his name because he is magnetic in everything. He was in Django Unchained as a baddie and was stupendous as usual. I’d watch him in anything. As a matter of fact, I now plan to rent/stream this when it is available because of him and I have zero interest in it otherwise. Only made it a quarter thru the original although hubby watched it all 😉

      • KBB says:

He was incredible in Justified! Boyd Crowder is one of my all time favorite TV characters. He’s in The Shield as well, which I’ve been meaning to watch just to see more of him.

      • whatWHAT? says:

I first saw Goggins in The Shield and he was fantastic in that. He made a few guest appearances on Sons of Anarchy, too, and stole every scene he was in.

not only great in Django, but Tarantino also cast him in the Hateful Eight and I think he was even better in that than Django.

      • lucy2 says:

He’s an incredibly talented actor, one of my faves, and magnetic is the perfect word for him. Boyd Crowder on Justified is my favorite of his performances, but he’s great in everything he does.
While this movie doesn’t seem to be a cinematic masterpiece, I’m thrilled to be seeing him in larger roles.

      • hogtowngooner says:

I loved him in Vice Principals! A great show, btw, if you haven’t watched it. Highly recommended!

    • Bethany F says:

@patricia she didn’t take her little girls, she took one of her girls and one of her boys – vivienne & knox

    • LetItGooo says:

      @Patricia
She took her son and daughter, Knox and Viv. She didn’t look tired to me, just like she has on zero makeup and un-done hair. That is most moms on the wknd. With her face she gets away with it.

    • KBB says:

She doesn’t look tired to me, she looks ill, like she’s about to throw up

  5. Megan S says:

The reviews of this are pretty awful but the unifying theme seems to be the AV herself did the most she could with a really bad script. I had no intention of seeing it because she seems so one dimensional to me. She was so stiff and humorless in Jason Bourne she made Tommy Lee Jones look downright cuddly.

It was always going to be big in China so the studio can thank that demographic for the $41 million boost.

Having said all of that, I am going to go see it this week. Indiana Jones was full of awful plot holes but I loved Harrison Ford. It sounds like AK does a good job and makes this watchable.

    • erni says:

no worries, you don’t miss much. The minus for me are 1) she speaks so little for so much screen time, makes her look umm.. not as bright as she’s supposed to. 2) Her squeaking is annoying. 3) yeap she’s one-dimensional. bland.

      Angie’s Lara Croft ftw

  6. Snowflake says:

I love some of her outfits but she would look better in a color other than black. She needs color, black just points out how white she is.

    • Umyeah says:

      Whats wrong with being pale?

    • Amelia says:

I like the contrast with the red lipstick, though.
That woman can rock a bold lip like nobody else.

    • Beth says:

I’m ghost white no matter what color I wear, but her always wearing black clothes gets a little boring. Nothing wrong with being pale

    • LetItGooo says:

      @snowflake

First off she’s wearing a coat so you have no idea what’s underneath- but secondly, she’s taking her kids to the movies and we all know she loves black. So why keep discussing it? She’s been famous for 20+ years, and unlike Alicia she hasn’t really changed her skin color.

Also, her skin is a beautiful complexion. I’ve seen her in person. She’s a light kind of creamy beige, not stark white. But even if she were, dissing someone’s natural complexion is a no-no.

  7. Krill says:

I dont know if there is an exec alive who expected a de-sexified Lara Croft to perform the same (when adjusted for inflation) as the teen-boy bait that was her first film iteration. This box office is fine and depending on how long the run in International markets goes and how well $$$ the merchandising goes, it may yield a tidy franchise.

    • tracking says:

I agree. With the audience skewing male for this movie, the domestic take surely would have been larger had she been a ‘sexified’ character. Still glad for the more modern new version though.

      • Pear says:

I agree with you guys. The game has also been de-sexified. I thought Alicia did very well and brought a lot of depth to the character but you can’t turn a gazelle into a powerful horse. She was miscast as her “mood” is calm, introspective, and somewhat “introverted” with respect to the camera. Some people just have a big presence. Alicia’s more subtle. Enjoyed the film anyway and Daniel Wu and the baddie actor were great.

      • fra says:

Reboot Lara Croft doesn’t a big presence and she’s way more introverted than Vikander’s portrayal. I think she was terrific in the role,a mix of strenght and vulnerability.

  8. Rumi says:

I like Alicia I hope the movie does well. Love Angelina and it’s nice to see women supporting women.
For me too much CGI ruins a movie.
Unpopular opinion I love the way Angelina dresses. Especially when promoting a movie or red carpet. Her everyday wear resembles my own. Easy, comfortable and effortless.

  9. SM says:

The fact that only the youngest members of the clan (meaning the ones with least voice) were dragged to see this movie, is not exactly a vote of confidence for the film. I am joking of course, though I still have zero interest in seeing Alicia as Lara Croft.

    • Maya says:

There is a tweet out there from someone who wrote that that were sitting behind Angelina and 5 of her children.

    • WMGDtoo says:

Actually Zahara and Shiloh were there too. I saw pictures of all 4 kids with her.

I hope the movie does well. I don’t get why some of her fans were so over the top hating on the film. Angie was done with the role. Not like she was going to do another film. So rebooting it was not a bad idea. The game is still popular. So it makes sense.

    • LetItGooo says:

Lol I took it as maybe the older kids checked it out sans Mom with friends, while Angie promised the screaming younger ones she’d take them.

Angie has said her kids haven’t seen a lot of her movies because they’re R rated – so my guess is the Tombraider flicks are the ones they’ve seen of hers, so they’re interested in seeing the new one. They might play the game too.

    • Lucky Charm says:

Like most kids that age, they probably just didn’t want to be seen at the movies with mom, lol!

  10. LLC fan says:

I decided to watch it over the weekend when my lash extension appointment was cancelled. I did read the reviews because I wanted to like this film but…

The movie was bad to okay. I don’t know why the critics are saying AV carried the film because she was emotionless and dead eyed all the time. It’s like she couldn’t act here. The film was like a combination of hunger games, Indiana Jones and national treasure but less action and more boring. Even the funny lines fell flat on delivery. And there was just a little bit of action and more running and grunting from AV. They were building up the anticipation for this character lady of death and when they find her, you’ll be like, wtf? That’s it? Is this movie Tomb raider or some disease infection control movie? It was really stupid and disappointing. I know action movies are mostly dumb but this wasn’t even a fun action movie. The action there was just literally her trying to get to the Tomb running and jumping punching some people along the way and hit them with the bow and arrow.

I’m pretty sure they’re open to a sequel as the ending was about Lara finding another case to solve but with this film, I do hope they won’t. This new Lara was unnecessary and if they do, they should make it better and make it seem like Lara was actually having fun.

    • Pear says:

I enjoyed the movie and though it was maybe a 6.5/10 at best, but I thought Alicia was good in it – she is a good actor with a range of emotion and the right physicality – and you can only fault her for not breaking out of her natural calm, introspective, and “introverted” manner. Most actors can’t do this unless they’re Daniel Day Lewis. Like Jennifer Lawrence can’t turn her “loud” presence into Alicia’s calm presence.

      • anon says:

Something called “acting skills” allows you to act and speak and look like something else other than yourself… or so have I heard.

  11. Maya says:

Saw it over the weekend and sorry but it was boring and dragging especially the first 20-30 minutes.

When we finally got some action scenes, they were actually well done.

  12. crazydaisy says:

I’m sure AJ wanted to see the reboot and evaluate her Lara Croft successor, come on…Of course she did! However, Angie did not look one tiny bit happy about having her picture snapped in those DM shots.

Sometimes I feel really guilty for being a gossip hound.

  13. Enid says:

My husband and I saw it over the weekend and enjoyed it. I didn’t go into this expecting some great award winning acting or plot. It was just a decent popcorn flick.

  14. Peg says:

Angie and the children saw ‘Love Simon.’

  15. Riley says:

Letitgoo seems like Angie loon herself, live and in pale color

  16. Sandy says:

The link in the post says they went to see Love Simon and NOT Tomb Raider! OOPS!
