Chip & Joanna Gaines welcome baby boy Crew Gaines a few weeks early

I’ve honestly never picked up on the fact that Chip and Joanna Gaines have used “E” names for their daughters and “D” names for their sons. I like that it wasn’t so obvious, and I like that they broke the pattern for their fifth child. Last year, Chip and Joanna announced that they were ending their wildly popular HGTV show Fixer Upper after the then-current season was finished filming. Many of us had a lot of theories as to why they were ending it, but it looks like it really was about their family, as Joanna announced her pregnancy a short time later.

Well, Joanna and Chip welcomed their fifth child on Saturday – a little boy named CREW. Crew Gaines. Crew joins big siblings Drake (13), Ella (11), Duke (9) and Emmie Kay (8). Joanna just turned 40 years old in April, and apparently baby Crew came two and a half weeks earlier than his due date. It sounds like Crew’s delivery was pretty easy, because they were up and posting photos pretty quickly. Joanna looks spent! Poor woman. As for the name “Crew” – I don’t like it that much, but hey, it’s not my baby. It sounds more like a nickname than someone’s official legal name, and it sounds like they really want this baby to be a jock. Of course, it’s a small mercy that they didn’t spell it the other way, with the umlaut: Crüe Gaines. That would have been funny.

    Ugh, that name.

    • It'sJustBlanche says:

      It’s horrible.

    • S says:

I, legit, know a couple who had a boy last month and named him Crew. Is some terrible trend I’m missing? Ugh.

    • magnoliarose says:

Yeah, it is bad. Palinesque of them to choose it.

      • spargel says:

magnoliarose, so true. Those Gaines boy names are “I’m going to Baylor in 18 years!” names. You can see some god-names coming at you a mile away.

    • minx says:

      Hate it. Sounds hillbilly.

      • Mo' Comments Mo' Problems says:

All the names sound so country-ish…nothing wrong, given that’s how/where they “live,” but still…….can you imagine the kids on the playground calling it “screw” instead of “crew?” 🙁

      • Spicecake38 says:

Minx, and Mo 😂You guys made me LOLOL!I have allergies and just guzzled some NyQuil (ya it’s the middle of the day please don’t judge 😏)I’m trying to be kind here because they seem really nice and like good people, and I’m happy for them and wish the babe and family all health and goodness. But the name Crew ,sadly will be converted by schoolchildren to “screw”.My given name is unusual so I know this first hand.😞

  2. Runcmc says:

That family is so sweet and wholesome. The parents seem to adore each other, the kids are loved and happy and thriving. I dunno, it’s actually nice to see in such a sea of bad news. Loving family welcomes a new member- congratulations to them!

    • Shelley says:

Runmc.. Wholesome? The jury is still out on that. There failure to denounce the discriminatory doctrine of their Church is telling.

      • formerly known as Amy says:

wholesome? Lol. The opposite of love isn’t hate, the opposite of love is indifference. The only thing that’s required for evil to flourish is for good people to do nothing. Chip and Joanna are the good people doing nothing.

      • Pansy says:

I don’t attend their church, so am unfamiliar with that, but they do a lot of really good things with the money they’re making. Super involved with children’s charities.

      • magnoliarose says:

I hate the term wholesome with a passion and weren’t the rumors their marriage was in trouble because he has a wandering eye? They belong to a religion that discriminates so even if the rumors are false that alone makes them not wholesome. They grate on my nerves.

  3. FHMom says:

I wonder if that baby is wrapped in a Magnolia blanket. Congratualations to them. They make beautiful children.

  4. HelloSunshine says:

I feel bad for Duke and Crew. The others have nice names but these are a little out there imo. Happy baby and Jo are doing great though, I do love this family!

  5. Yup says:

They seem nice. I watched a few seasons of fixer upp just because their vibe was so positive. Good for them, congratulations.

  6. Ladykeller says:

Not crazy about the name but plenty of people have said that about my kids names. So who am I to judge.

  7. Sayrah says:

    Congrats to them!

  8. beatrixkiddo says:

    …There are worse names.

  9. Harryg says:

That top photo is so funny. As is a baby was delivered to her along her breakfast tray.
    Congratulations!

    • minx says:

That was my thought! And she looks slightly puzzled, like, where are my scrambled eggs?

  10. BostonStrong says:

I really thought Chip would name the baby Demo Day Gaines!

  11. SJhere says:

Doesn’t anybody name a baby Bob, Mike, Kevin anymore?
Awful name for a baby, IMO. I liked their show, don’t like any of the Magnolia merch tho.

    • Wiffie says:

Seeing as it’s not 1958 anymore, nah.

In those days, basically every fourth baby was named Mike, Steve, Scott or Dave. Those were just trends too!

  12. KiddV says:

Cute baby burrito! That’s all I got. I don’t know who these people are.

  13. Sparkly says:

Yikes, I don’t like any of their boy names. But like someone above said, I’m sure plenty of people don’t like my kids; names either. Glad momma and baby are okay. That pic of the sibs anxiously waiting is too cute.

  14. Pansy says:

That pic of the kids waiting!! So precious!

  15. Summertime says:

You guys are harsh. As people go, the Gaineses are pretty harmless — and I say that as someone who doesn’t care for their show. Their pastor is questionable, but I remember reading their response and it clearly distanced them from his practices and clarified that they follow their own faith path.

Also, Crew has been a trendy name for close to a decade now. I know a handful, and like most names, it grows on you over time. Better than Dune I suppose.

    • magnoliarose says:

They dodged responsibility. If they follow their own faith path they wouldn’t sit in a church with a pastor like that. The pastor sets the tone and is the leader of the church so I take that excuse and dismiss as PR spin.

      • Summertime says:

I respect what you’re saying, but am personally resistant to canceling everyone connected to controversy. I can only judge them on their words and actions, and the little I’ve seen is harmless. They aren’t actively bigoted or divisive, and in today’s craptacular, that’s good enough for me.

      • Nickname says:

Obama sat in Jeremiah White’s for years and only denounced him as a pastor after the outrage got real loud. Do you judge him?

      • Cleo2 says:

So @Nickname what exactly do you think Jeremiah Wright has done in the past that equates to not being for marriage equality and doing conversion therapy?

Aside from serving his country as a U S Marine, and the Navy unlike McBonespur.

I’d remind you that contrary to your point, Barack Obama left the church and voiced his opposition. Have the Gaines?

        Stop with the whatabout-ism.

  16. Emzors says:

Pretty sure I’d kill my husband if he ever referred to me as “big momma”

    • Franklymydear... says:

Right?! That was my takeaway. Do NOT call a new mother “big momma”. Ugh. I think Crew is a cute name. Different and kind of cool sounding.

  17. magnoliarose says:

The photo of the older kids by the door is cute. One of the happiest moments of childbirth for me is introducing my children to their new sibling. Their expressions and excitement are incomparable. I am glad we recorded those moments.

They aren’t my thing but I am glad she and the baby are healthy and thriving.

  18. Abby says:

I don’t mind Crew. I’m in Texas and I know at least 2 boys named Crew in the Central Texas region.

Congrats to them! I’m 34 and done having kids. Envisioning having another at 40 makes me so tired!

  19. Rescue Cat says:

New Zealand’s Prime Jacinda Adern gave birth to a baby girl on the weekend. They”ve named her Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford — or Neve Gayford for short. Adern becomes only the second woman in history to give birth while in office.

    http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2018-06-24/jacinda-ardern-and-clark-gayford-name-daughter-neve/9903784

    • Starkiller says:

And uh, that’s relevant to this story how, exactly?

      • Spicecake38 says:

I think Rescue Cat is just making reference to people in the public eye giving their children unusual names?Love the name Neve or Neva it’s very old, betting it’s going to make a strong yet brief comeback.

  20. Rescue Cat says:

Um..both are stories about public figures who recently gave birth. I’d be surprised if Kaiser doesn’t write an article about Adern in the next few days.

  21. Ballerina says:

I wonder how hands on they are able to be with all the businesses they’ve got now. I’ve never seen the show, but I saw the article where a journalist was criticizing them for not being hands on and yet they keep having more and more kids. Funny enough the journalist later apologized for his criticism.

  22. HeyThere! says:

I do not like the name at all…but not my kid so oh well! congratulations to them! Lol

  23. KP says:

I actually know someone with a 6 year old Crew. And yes… it’s horrible. Poor kids.

  24. VegasSchmegus says:

I thought for SURE they were going to name the baby Shiplap……….but, anyway…..congrats, Gaines Family!

  25. amy says:

The only Crew I know is my friend’s sweet dog. A lot of churches are anti gay, but so are all the muslims I know around my neighborhood. In fact, the ones near me believe you should be imprisoned for being gay. I think it’s weird how everyone on this site seems to judge the Gaines but always seem to give muslim celebrities a pass for their ‘religion’… they both discriminate and it should stop.
