Daniel Radcliffe is the cover boy for the August issue of Esquire UK. It’s no secret that I find Daniel very charming and wiser than his years – but this is perhaps the most candid interview I’ve ever read with the little wunderkind. No subject seems to be off-limits, and Daniel reveals some very intimate information. The biggest headlines will probably be in his discussion of sex and in the part about his co-star Emma Watson. But I also think the whole “Daniel Radcliffe is an atheist” thing might get some headlines:
On living on his own for a year: “I’m a demon with a microwave… I cook myself dinner, though it’s mainly pasta with a load of cheese and a load of tuna; trust me, it’s awesome. I went away for a week and when I cam back the flat stank. I’d left a half-finished bowl of cereal and milk had just totally congealed.”
On Michael Jackson (Radcliffe was interviewed before Jackson’s death, and the rumor around the British papers was that Jackson had personally invited Radcliffe to come): “I can’t think of anywhere I’d less like to be [than Jackson’s comeback show in London]. I don’t like Michael Jackson’s music. Nothing against the man… but no.”
On Religion: “I’m an atheist, but I’m very relazed about it. I don’t preach my atheism, but I have a huge amount of respect for people like Richard Dawkins who do. Anthing he does on television I will watch… There we go, Dan, that’s half of America that’s not going to see the next Harry Potter film on the back of the comment!”
On Sex and Love: He says he had his first girlfriend at 14, whom he met through his co-star Emma Watson, and he confirms he lost his virginity at 16. “It was a good age. ‘I’m legal – right, come on!’”
On On-Set Hookups: “There was a period when we were the only boys and girls any of us knew… And so, you know, we were all unbelievably horny from about the third film to probably about the end of the fifth; then it all settled down. But, God, for a few years… There was never anybody I fancied that much in the cast, though the conspiracy theorists always like to say that me and Emma are dating. We know it’d be everything the fans ever wanted. I’m sorry guys, it’s not happening. It’s just not. There’s something really incestuous about the idea of it.”
On School: He’s done with his formal education, but has “twice weekly lessons with his English teacher.” “[Because] I don’t want to stop school and suddenly stop learning.”
Upcoming Non-Harry Potter Films: Radcliffe is considering taking a film role of a father, “which is very strange. I’m very excited about one day having kids… Three of four, but I think we’d have to see how the first one goes because I finished my parents off.”
[From Esquire UK print edition, August issue]
Doesn’t he seem sweet? I mean, obviously, he’s some kind of boy genius, but I just find it thrilling that there’s a big actor in his late teens/early twenties (Daniel turns twenty July 23rd) where we don’t have to make excuses for all of the dumb crap he says. Daniel doesn’t say anything dumb – the worst that can be said about him is that he’s a bit too honest for someone whose words will be endlessly parsed. But that’s his charm! And he likes cougars too! I agree Kaiser, he is young but not dumb. I hare it when people excuse Lohan and Fox saying they are young. Young does not always equal to dumb you know.

Sign me up too! I love Daniel, well all the Harry potter kids, really. They all have seemed to handle fame & fortune really really well, as opposed to some young “stars” here in the States

I am sad about his lack of faith.

He’s delicious.

Why do they have him looking like a drug addled zombie or something? He looks awful, what’s the significance of being punched in the face?

Ugh, he’s like 20 years old….he clearly thinks he knows everything. And he’ll only be famous for Happy Potter – let’s just be real. I agree with what Ray said….

Bessy – in which case, I am sad about your lack of acceptance.
8 Anonymous – while not being a fan of Harry Potter, I saw Daniel Radcliffe in a play called Equus in London. This boy is talented! I think he has a bright future.

It will be interesting to see if he continues his atheism as he gets older and if he has children. I think we all grow within our faith and spiritually throughout life. And he’s totally right about the America comment! LOL

Lucinda – no. I’m 32 and am still the same atheist I was as a teenager. It’s silly to say someone will “grow within (their) faith” when they don’t have any.

Hmm “sweet” is not what I would call him.

I was born atheist and I’ll die atheist and my daughter is an atheist. I don’t get the objection to his atheism. Why would his not believeing in a deity make people think he is a know it all?

Sweet? Plain, ordinary, look-at-how-smart-I-am young adult. What’s different in him than any other “here I come” post-teenager? LOL

I hate it when people get down on others for what they believe. Everyone is allowed to believe what they WANT. Period. Who cares if he’s an atheist? Who cares if he’s a Buddhist or a Christian or whatever he wants to believe? Same thing for all the rest of you. Everyone has their own opinions, let it rest.

I’m amazed no one’s blamed JK’s writings for his atheism. I’ve nothing against people of faith, whatever floats your boat. Good for him for speaking his mind and not being afraid of small minded people.

I think he comes across as a stupid 16 year old. I’m atheist, I’ve lost my virginity. Good for you. Keep that stuff to yourself because honestly, I don’t want to know.
I think young celebrities these days want to seem like rebels and like they are more interesting just because they are having sex and are *gasp* atheists. It’s silly.
But I won’t knock him so much for being an atheist. I never understood believing in any God and while I don’t demonize those who do, I just don’t get it.

i prefer this image of him…got sick and tired of his face as h.p.

I don’t understand why he is being called “a know it all” and how he is “stupid.” He’s pretty matter of fact. He isn’t putting down religion at all.
He is considering taking an role of a father which means he’s getting offers. Plus I believe he got great reviews for Equus which isn’t a walk in the park play.

I’ve always liked him, and I like him even more now.

Im not even a Harry Potter fan but I just adore Daniel Radcliffe. he’s clever and modest and is taking real strides in his choice of acting roles! Equus is NOT an easy role. Took guts to take that on! And I love his comment about continuing his education just for the sake of continuing to learn.

He looks SO much like my baby brother. The older he gets, the more he looks like my brother. It totally weirds me OUT.
Seriously, that third picture with the yellow shoes? That could BE my little brother when he was 18ish. I have to like…close my eyes and rub them to see if I’m imagining things.

I’m real dissapointed about dan being an athiest and losing his virginity at 16 he needs to wait till he’s married. I just hope that God will relight his walk with him.

I don’t care what all you people who are downing Danny have to say. He’s a great actor and I don’t see any of you acting or getting any offers. I’ve never been acting except in theatre at my high school but I’m pretty sure that it’s not all just fun and games. you have to work and work and work. I agree with Anastasiabea, Rose, Flourpot, Ana, Voodoobetty. And Ms. Radcliffe is hella funny. I think I would like her. But seriously if you haven’t ever been on stage or in a play or in a movie shown to millons of people, I suggest you keep your mouth closed. And Danny I don’t mind dating older guys. And I think you should take that job offer as a father, who knows it could help you for future refrence for when you do become a father.

Ok, I am a big fan of Harry Potter and when I read about Daniel losing his virginity at such a young age, it had a major impact on me……but now I am over it. I guess i just liked his character as “Harry Potter” and not the actual “him”. But I will always adore him. I dont know about anyone else(i am not American nor British), but losing your virginity to anyone besides your life partner is somewhat like a crime.
Anyways, i wish Daniel all the best in his future and maybe one day he will see wat I mean by “a crime”.
AND, he is not dumb, he is honest and matter of factly…….thats not a crime, its a quality which makes him who he is….i admit i did not expect that from him(u know, losing his V-card and all) but everything happens for a purpose and he probably knows why he did what he did. When i read that, though, i stopped reading harry potter books for 2 weeks but then the truth hit me
GUD LUCK for the future, Dan …..you are a wondeful actor and keep it up!

Waydago Rad! Besides, I think he is quite clever, for one thing, stupid and ignorant people wouldn’t watch Richard Dawkins, enjoy it and even less, understand what he’s talking about. So, there you go. Dan is a pretty ok guy.

What a shock! This legal adult has made his own choices in life! Can you imagine what goes on inside his head? It must be all…like…actual, rational thoughts and stuff.

I am a 18 years old and have grown up watching Harry Potter. I am an American, and a Christian, but guess what I still love harry potter, and still think Daniel Radcliffe is an amazing actor (not just because of his looks, because he is a genuinely good actor). Everyone makes mistakes, and everyone has their own views. I think everyone needs to realize that teenagers are losing there virginity at 16 all the time! And even sooner than that! A lot of my friends, including myself, lost their virginity at 16 and that is for us to deal with for the rest of our lives. People who are saying “we didn’t want to know that” or “keep it to yourself” well then maybe you shouldn’t read things like this? Get over it! That is their choice, and people need to stop judging others for that, because if you want to be a good Christian than stop judging others, only God can truly judge us. Not meaning that in a preachy way to those of you who don’t believe in God, that is your choice, and I respect you fully.

I am an American Christian, supposedly one of the people who will ‘hate’ Daniel Radcliffe for his atheism/lost virginity. Honestly? I don’t care. It’s his choice, and I don’t think any less of him for it.
I’m so tired of this stereotype that Americans/Christians are judgmental jerks when it’s really a small group that just shouts the loudest.

I was about to make a general comment about the weirdness of Americans in judging somebody as ‘bad’ merely for having sex outside of marriage or for not believing in gods or goddesses. Luckily you reminded me, just in time, that such a view is stereotypical. It does seem awfully prevalent over there though. Thank you for reminding me that there are plenty of sane, intelligent Americans who possess a real sense of empathy. You do your country proud (sincerely meant).

ahh I love that he’s an atheist. I just have so much more respect for people who are. Don’t get me wrong, half my family’s religious and I love them, but well, religion’s a bit retarded. Seriously.

Bet the guy is actually still a virgin. I mean what heterosexual guy wouldn’t be banging Emma Watson after spending that much time around her.
