Britney Spears, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce didn’t go to MJ memorial

Britney Spears, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, and Beyonce are among the stars who didn’t show up Michael Jackson’s memorial service yesterday. MTV reported ahead of the event that Timberlake would be there although he didn’t attend. Elizabeth Taylor and Diana Ross, who were close to Jackson, didn’t attend due to personal reasons and both said they didn’t want to make their grief public. Was it a snub that many music industry stars, most of whom issued statements after Jackson’s death, stayed away? Were they afraid of overshadowing the family or the event, or did they stay home for some other reason?

It was expected to be the who’s who of everyone in the entertainment industry, bigger than President Obama’s inauguration, more star-studded than Princess Diana’s funeral.

A number of them came, like Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson and Lionel Richie. But many of the most famous people in the music world didn’t show up to Michael Jackson’s memorial Tuesday.

Among the stars expected to attend who did not: Quincy Jones, who produced some of Jackson’s biggest hits, Beyonce Knowles, who paid tribute to Jackson at June 28’s BET awards, and Macaulay Culkin, who spent time at Jackson’s Neverland ranch as a boy.

Some of Jackson’s closest friends also shunned the service. Diana Ross, the soul legend Jackson emulated and the potential guardian of his three children, declined to attend and instead issued a statement to the media as the memorial began.

“I am trying to find closure,” Ross said in her statement. “I want you to know that even though I am not there at the Staples Center, I am there in my heart. I have decided to pause and be silent. This feels right for me. Michael was a personal love of mine, a treasured part of my world, part of the fabric of my life in a way that I can’t seem to find words to express….”

Screen and stage legend Liza Minnelli and her ex-husband, David Gest, both longtime pals of Jackson’s, were also no-shows.

Then there’s the bevy of successful musicians who count Jackson as their contemporary and/or inspiration (if not their personal friend) who were notably absent from the proceedings: fellow legends Madonna, Prince and Elton John, pop stars Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears, and Sheryl Crow, who began her career as a back-up singer for Jackson in the 1980s. They all sang Jackson’s praises to the press in the days following his death — why not show up to the main event?

The article goes on to point out that Britney and Madonna are both touring and it’s likely they couldn’t get away. It’s also possible that they wanted to perform but didn’t have the time and didn’t want to show up without doing some kind of tribute to Jackson. The celebrities might have felt that the day was about the family and Jackson’s legacy and they weren’t going to come and make it about them. It was about the fans and the gift that Jackson left us with his music. Until I read about the celebrity no-shows today I didn’t notice who wasn’t there because I was focused on the message and the music. The service really moved me, and that’s what matters, not who showed up.

Did Macaulay Culkin even issue a statement or anything?

This was a great post. I didn’t even realize who wasn’t there (besides Diana Ross and Elizabeth Taylor) until you brought it to my attention. Although I could have done without Cory Feldman dressed up like the man. I suppose imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. To the King Of Pop-your music moves people, oftentimes to tears. You will be missed, but you’ll live forever in our earphones and on the dance floor.

    Team Brenda

There’s not a whole lot of point in trying to interpret why certain individuals weren’t in attendance. Probably those who could make it did. It’s really as simple as that.

But on another note regarding these pix – Hey, Brit, it’s called a BRA – you need to wear one, you are not 16 anymore, hon LOL! And anyone ever notice also that her youngest son always looks absolutely freaking miserable?

  4. Beth says:

It’s summer so most musicians are on tour-Britney, Madonna, Beyonce, etc. People aren’t going to cancel shows for an appearrance. Also many said they weren’t planning to come because they wanted to greive in private. I think this story is much ado about nothing.

  5. Lila says:

Where was Oprah? Why didn’t she at least release a statement?

  6. bored says:

I think it’s private rather than professional decision to go to something like that or not. It’s a memorial, not the VMA’s. I hate funerals myself so I can understand people not going.

“The service really moved me, and that’s what matters, not who showed up.”

    Exactly!

  8. Codzilla says:

There are some things that we can always count on, and Britney dressing up in some shitty outfit is definitely on that list.

  9. lady caca says:

umm, tia c, britneys 26-she aint old! anyways glad you can muse yourself.

  10. nelly says:

Why Britney, Beyoncé or Timberlake had to go anyway? They didn’t knew MJ at all, so there was no reason for their presence on the memorial. Just because they are famous? Sorry! But I just don’t think that is a valid reason.
And please Britney, just wear a bra for God sake! She may have 26, but i have 24 and somehow i manage to leave the house without showing my nipples.

  11. Kevin says:

Tia, there ain’t a damn thing wrong with the way her kids look. They look great when you take into account the pap-smears clicking cameras in their faces.

  12. j. ferber says:

Why is it anyone’s business whether Britney wears a bra or not? Although breasts are somewhat of a national pastime in this country, they do belong on a woman’s body and it’s her choice what, if anything, to put on them.

  13. Anna says:

I felt sorry for the little girl, and for Marlon. The rest was as nauseating as the freak himself.

  14. mel says:

Sometimes less is better so I am glad those individuals stayed away. The artists who did perform did a great job! I especially like John Mayer’s redition of Human Nature.

  15. wtf??? says:

ok anna, i think that was uncalled for..

anyways it was a touching service.. i cannot believe celebitchy is actually saying it as well…wow…

as for beyonce, justin and whoever..they werent missed at all so who cares!!!!

  16. princess pee says:

So, ABC is trying to stir up controversy? Running out of MJ headlines?
This is not a story. We cannot know the reasons why some people were there and others weren’t, and frankly I think it would be extremely rude to ask about it in an interview later. Not that that will stop anyone.

  17. Ophelia says:

    I agree with Anna.

  18. jeannified says:

In this case, I don’t think it mattered or was a “snub.” It DOES make sense that the ceremony stay personal and respectful, and focus on Michael, and not become a circus! I think the people who mattered, came. It’s understandable that others would want to grieve in private.

  19. morgs says:

memorial? surely you meant martyrdom ceremony.

  20. paranel says:

I know the three ladies are on tour half way around the world. Makes it tough.

  21. orion70 says:

I quite like the way Diana Ross put it. Perhaps some chose to be this way, instead of participating in the spectacle this seemed to become (I didn’t watch it, just read the overviews, and it still seemed like a circus).

I think the family should have kept “funeral” and “tribute / star parade ” separate. You said it right Bored “It’s a memorial, not the VMA’s” .

Don’t get me started on the whole “King of Pop” thing….is that not a phrase he coined for himself ? Seemed very innappropriate to have it associated with the funeral.

  22. Paulette says:

@ anna, I just saw clips of it, but “nauseating” sounds about right.

I can’t imagine why these no-show celebs didn’t want to be associated with MJ. Just because a man goes to trial for kiddie fiddling twice (TWICE!), and admits to serving “Jesus juice” to little boys at his sleep overs, that doesn’t make him an actual pedophile. Oh, wait, yes it does.

  23. trcyph says:

It does not matter who did not come what
does matter is those who did come to the
    memorial.

Michael Jackson A child abuse victim that triumphed.
Here’s what I see looking into the eyes of Micheal Jackson

I have been a fan of Michael Jackson’s for many years and no matter what
happens I and countless others will remain fans. Here’s why.

Oprah has not said one word about this icon??How come. Does she feel she is a bigger star than he was.I knew she was getting full of herself.
