Rachel Weisz, 39, is calling out actors and actresses who are destroying their faces with Botox. In a new interview in Harper’s Bazaar UK (story via Fox News), Rachel says that Botox should be “banned”. What’s funny is that it seems Rachel is purposefully refusing to call out specific actors, but Fox News has no problem naming one… cough cough Nicole Kidman cough. Fox News, in a particularly cheeky way, claims that Rachel thinks “Nicole Kidman is to acting what Barry Bonds is to baseball.” Chuckle.
Rachel Weisz thinks Nicole Kidman is to acting what Barry Bonds is to baseball. At least that’s what the “Mummy” star tells the August issue of the UK edition of Harper’s Bazaar.
“It should be banned for actors, as steroids are for sportsmen,” Weisz says of Botox. “Acting is all about expression; why would you want to iron out a frown?”
The London-born Oscar-winner (you can tell she’s from there because she uses the word “sportsmen”) also says she’s much more comfortable back in jolly old England than she is in appearance-obsessed America.
“I love the way girls in London dress; it’s so different to the American “blow-dry and immaculate grooming” thing,” she says.
But she is comfortable with traditional female roles. Very traditional.
Married to director Darren Aronofsky, she says “I am cave-woman to his man – man.”
[From Fox News]
I’m not sure how one would enforce a Botox ban, but I’d like to see Rachel try. I’d imagine it would involve trying to wrestle the needle out of Nicole’s cold, dead hand. In another interview excerpt, Rachel describes how she lives by Tom Cruise, and the paparazzi often mistake her for him:
Rachel Weisz gets mistaken for Tom Cruise.
The Oscar-winning actress claims she isn’t famous enough to be followed by paparazzi in Hollywood, and only gets snapped by people looking for the Valkyrie star, who lives close to her.
She explained to Britain’s Harper’s Bazaar magazine: “Sometimes the paparazzi, on the lookout for Tom Cruise who lives nearby, trickle onto my street, take a few pictures of me, and disappear. But I never feel hounded.”
“I am really not on that level of fame. I go on the subway and I can walk my son Henry to school. I have never had a problem, except maybe briefly when I won the Oscar and gave birth to Henry in quick succession. Then suddenly everyone was interested. Having those lenses coming up towards you when you’re holding this little bundle in your arms is frightening.”
[From The Age]
I could see it. Rachel and Tom Cruise has very similar coloring. If Tom Cruise dressed up in drag (and I’m not saying he does, but wouldn’t that be something?) he would look a lot like Rachel. I wonder if she and Tom ever hang out. I wonder if her disgust with Botox really is related to Nicole Kidman and Rachel’s some kind of closeted Team Cruise person. Praise Xenu, we have a conspiracy!
Rachel Weisz is shown in Cannes on 5/17 and 5/18/09. She is shown with her fiance, Darren Aronofsky. Credit: Fame Pictures. Nicole Kidman is shown on 12/10/08 and 12/13/08.

love Rachel. I think she is absolutely gorgeous, and one of my favorite actresses.

She just gets more and more beautiful as time goes by. Its so nice to have a few intelligent, talented and down to earth actresses out there.

That’s why i love actresses like that. They don’t need plastic cirurgies ou anything else, cause they are confident, beautiful by nature and not obsessed with their physical appareance. Diane lane is one of those too.

She is gorgeous-I like that she’s not all over the place. You see her in a film, she takes a break, then she pops up again.

Ooh she looks lovely in both shades of green, especially the first. Yah for green my favourite colour. And I totally agree with her but it ain’t gonna happen; not in youth obessesed Hollywood. If it ever does get banned though, can we add lip-plumping to the list of things that should not be allowed. I’m forever baffled as to why women want to go around looking like they’ve got swollen arseholes for lips.

@ Choose Me: Thanks for the visual, mate! LOL
Ash: I love her, too; what a refreshing change–an actress who has a brain and isn’t afraid to say what’s on her mind, is gorgeous effortlessly, plus she can act her ass off.
Well done, Rachel.

Nooooo!!! The most entertaining part of The Golden Compass was watching Nicole Kidman trying to move the upper portion of her face – if she wants to inject poison into her forehead, who should we be to try and stop her?

And it’s easier to dismiss cosmetic surgery when you’re as naturally beautiful as Rachel Weitz – us mere mortals sometimes need a little help, y’know…

Nelly, very well put, there are so few Grand Dames left. Only a few come to mind of handful and I doubt there will be that many in say, 15 to 20 years.
With all the extreme plastic surgery being done, it’s starting to remind me of the old Memorex commercials. “Is it live (in this case “real”) or is it Memorex. Good question, but just in case, whatever you do, keep away from open flame!

Let’s see what she thinks about botox in about 5 years or less….

Nona-I agree.
Sometimes women like Rachel can get to 40 without a hitch, but 45 may be a totally different story. She’ll see.

Nope, its called self confidence. i like a woman who can give an expression than a woman who can’t move her face.
Rachel to me is a real, smart and talented woman who has the guts to say it like it is.

Or she can end up like Michelle Pfeiffer, who is 50 and looks amazing with out botox.

I hate botox as well (ummm Nicole Kidman?) but, all this coming from the girl who had a VERY obvious nose job some years ago…hmmm. Pot calling the kettle is all I’m saying.

My God, she’s beautiful.

Patrice, I don’t think she implied that she’s anti-cosmetic surgery completely… just that not being able to move your face should disqualify you from acting. At least, that’s how I interpreted it. And I agree, too.

Passive aggresive bi-atch.

Princess:
Good point! What good is acting if you can’t move your face to show the appropriate expression?

Patrice, I’m not sure about the nose-job thing but Rachel’s problem with Botox was clearly about the resulting lack of expression, not the fact that it alters one’s looks. Her nose is still unusual, not the kind of cookie-cutter nose one ends up with after surgery. If she did have it done, at least she kept some of it’s original uniqueness.
She’s been one of my favorite actresses since I first saw her in that Russian sniper movie (Behind Enemy Lines? Too lazy to google. Wow. That’s f’n lazy) with Jude Law.

If she doesn’t use Botox, I want to know what she does use, because she doesn’t have a line on her forehead.

I agree. Plus plastic surgery should be shunned by both the acting and modeling worlds. You set a horrible example.

Nose Job? You need glasses Patrice if you think that because if that is a nose job, Rachel should get her money back.

that’s interesting!!
when I say interesting you may understand: how dare she is?? she is such a big hypocrite!!!!
Actually I met her a couple of times , on the sofa of my dermatologist… who does only cosmetic procedures…there is no shame helping mother nature, the great shame is blaming other people for doing the exact same thing than you.
Besides she is not that stunning in person, she has a very dry skin and a dull complexion, and very awfully dry hair.
xoxo

While we’re at it, let’s ban fake boobs, fake lips, hair extensions, orange spray on tans and over-whitened teeth.

Steroids and Botox have nothing in common. Rachel Weisz is right, though. In America, we are obsessed with the way we look. That’s more a psychological problem. But she goes on to say that the use of Botox injections leave actors less able to convey emotion and that it harms the acting industry as much as steroids harm athletes.
You’ve got to be kidding.

I think what is funny here funnylilou is that you can lie about something i know you have no ideal about. I do go to Rachel’s dermatologist ( I live in New York ) and he does not only do cosmetic procedures, plus i have met Rachel and she’s more naturally beautiful in person. If you’re going to make things up, try to at least know what you are talking about and be a little creative.
