Duchess Meghan isn’t reading the smear-campaign articles, she’s ‘a believer in karma’

Cenotaph Remembrance Parade

Remember towards the end of the summer, we basically had a series of debates about what the Duchess of Sussex could or should do about the trashy side of her family? The White Markles were giving daily interviews, bitching out Meghan regularly and they were doing it for profit: the British tabloids paid Samantha Grant and Thomas Markle for their every inappropriate and tacky thought. At the end of the day, Meghan just waited them out – perhaps she knew that people would eventually get tired of them, and that Samantha and Thomas would basically punch themselves out. Meghan took the long view and didn’t engage, and I think that mostly worked in her favor. Well, I wonder if she’s doing the same thing now, about this sudden smear campaign that seems to be coming from within the palace walls. If she suspects that Prince Charles, his staff, or the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are behind some or many of these terrible stories, will she just bide her time and take the long view? According to Katie Nicholl at Vanity Fair, maybe?

It’s been Meghan Markle’s toughest week yet as a royal in the media spotlight, but the Duchess of Sussex has a way of dealing with all the bad press: she simply doesn’t read it. According to royal sources, Meghan makes a point of not reading negative stories about herself, even in the midst of a media storm like the one that has come this week, with ongoing rumors about tension between Meghan and her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton. While Prince Harry often reads newspapers (including The Sun, which broke the story that he and Meghan were leaving London), Meghan has made a point of steering clear.

“Meghan is a believer in karma and she doesn’t want to sit there reading negative online stories and comments about herself,” said a source. “She feels to a degree the British press is out to get her and while she’s aware of the news and what’s going on, she tries her best not to read all the stories about her.”

Palace courtiers have refused to enter the dialogue and will neither confirm or deny the stories; the Palace has “no plans to engage in this narrative,” according to one source. Instead it was down to Kate to try to extinguish the flames during a trip to Leicester, when she said she was very excited about Harry and Meghan expecting a baby and how much fun the royal cousins will have growing up.

[From Vanity Fair]

I really did laugh out loud at “Meghan is a believer in karma.” YAS KWEEN. Meghan will sit back and wait for karma to come for these fools. Maybe karma will even be helped along by some strategic leaks of her own. I mean, Meghan has been around the royals for more than a year now. Who’s to say she hasn’t been quietly compiling some stories which she’ll eventually leak too? As for Meg “not reading” the negative stories – I mean, that’s crap. She reads the stuff, or her people read it and summarize for her. She just doesn’t want her palace haters to know that she’s reading it. She doesn’t want to give them the satisfaction.

The best thing she can do is rise above it and keep working as she has been. They’ll keep trying and I think it’s only going to get nastier for a while.

It’s sad that I’m actually hoping for a Baby Boost in the press for her just to give her some respite from the bile being flung her way.

    • Ronaldinhio says:

The British media were always going to behave like this as they are such racist trash.

So what if she doesn’t get on with her sister in law. Even if that were true she’d hardly be the first.
It took me 10yrs to appreciate mine.
It is also normal for there to be some shake up after a marriage especially once there is a baby on the way.
Lines of alliegance shift, often through no request. Husband’s and wives bond as a team to usher in the new in ways they never did before.

This if happening is not her fault. She is not to blame. Harry is not a prisoner.
Btw. Kate and Will seem like the worst sort of drags.

      • Bettyrose says:

It’s not just so what if they don’t get along, it’s stop fabricating that they don’t. Why in the world wouldn’t two reasonable adults with every reason to get along make an attempt to do so? And their kids will grow up together, someday seeing all this.

    • Bella Bella says:

I disagree, Kaiser. I don’t think Megan is reading the papers. When you have a position that is that high-profile, for sanity’s sake you cannot engage with the madness that is in the media. I worked for Jackie Onassis. She never read anything that was written about her. And she never commented on any of it either. And no one in the Kennedy family ever commented on anything. That was their policy. And none of what was written about them was ever true.

It’s all just made-up nonsense to sell newspapers, magazines and get online hits. Megan is quite right to not read any of it. It’s the healthiest thing she can do.

  2. Eliza says:

Karma means in the next life they will be reincarnated as a lesser being. It’s not an instant, or in this lifetime, result.

The press is awful and she shouldn’t listen to the rubbish, but they need to take some action to clear it up, because if Fergie proves anything, it’s the press will never stop.

    • Erinn says:

“Who’s to say she hasn’t been quietly compiling some stories which she’ll eventually leak too?”
Also would go against the idea of Karma from what I understand.

      • Fanny says:

“Karma” is such an actressy rejoinder. Not the most mature one either, although I think it must be tough for Harry and Meghan to know that they are likely being attacked by their own family members.

      • Mac says:

If it’s the grey men leaking, she would be nuts to try to go toe-to-toe with them. This is their raison d’etre.

    • Huh says:

Karma isn’t real. It doesn’t happen.

      • Jaded says:

Oh yes it does. Even in this lifetime. What goes around comes around and we reap what we sow.

  3. Surely Wolfbeak says:

Turns out the white side of her husband’s family is also trashy.

  4. Digital Unicorn says:

I kinda like her attitude – its a bit like ‘give them enough rope and they will hang themselves’ and in a way its working as this is making the Cambridges look really really bad and their is a backlash against them over it.

She learned about not engaging with these types of people at a young age with Daddy dearest.

Good luck to her and I hope she understand that the crap from the press does not reflect what the people think. Many of the tabloid rags are know to moderate their comments section and culling things to suit their narrative – the Fail is notorious for it.

    • lily says:

Yes, there is a backlash, in peoples heads. I don’t see the public giving two fks. We have more important things to think about.

  5. Rhys says:

Of course she reads it. That’s not the problem. It’s the other part of her new family who read it as well and were having a problem with the initial narrative of the “breath of fresh air.”

    • violet says:

I always said anyone who hears the phrase “breath of fresh air” should run for the hills.

Anyone who believes she isn’t reading this is naive. And she hasn’t kept working – except for Remembrance Day and the Hubb Kitchen appearance, she hasn’t been seen at all.

And what is the deafening silence from Harry about?

  6. OriginalLala says:

first off – LOL at that completely wrong understanding of what Karma actually is…

second..this whole Royal news cycle is totally bonkers…

  7. Kittycat says:

The best thing she can do is work.

    Work, work, work.

    • My3cents says:

Yes, her best “revenge ” is her strong work, ethic and we’ve already seen she’s a natural and pro.

    • JC says:

      Actually I disagree..

The media is in a feeding frenzy and I think the best thing she could do is lay low for a while.

  8. Royalwatcher says:

I don’t know why people don’t believe that she really doesn’t read the press. I would think that as an actor she would have already trained herself to ignore the noise or a) it would be soul crushing and b) you’d spend 24/7 doing it.

I really do believe her when she said in the engagement interview that she ignores what is written about her. I think Harry has been very clear and vocal (to her and other family members) that she has his complete support so hopefully she feels secure in her space and in how she has handled herself so far.

I would also think that the only person who really matters right now, the queen, has been satisfied with her royal performance so far. Every engagement they have has enormous numbers and Meghan hasn’t put a foot wrong. Plus their first Commonwealth tour was a huge success based on Australian press and numbers of people showing up. I mean, the numbers of people cheering for them when they did that balcony wave was insane. (That is the moment, IMO that flipped Will and Kate’s lid because that looked like an heir to the throne moment/reception.)

    • truthSF says:

” I mean, the numbers of people cheering for them when they did that balcony wave was insane. (That is the moment, IMO that flipped Will and Kate’s lid because that looked like an heir to the throne moment/reception.)”

I agree 100%! Isn’t it funny how the Meghan bashing gossip started so soon after their Australian, etc. engagement?! Things that makes you go hmm!🤔

    • MousyB says:

Agreed. Especially now that shes a big celeb – she would go insane reading every little thing. She likely does have people read things for her and summarize how bad it is so shes not completely clueless – that is no way the same as sitting down and reading the blogs/articles herself. But as someone that seems very determined, has a clear vision, etc. reading this garbage regularly would get in the way of that.

    • Becks1 says:

I dont know about a particular moment – I know pro Meghan twitter accounts agree with you re: the balcony – but I agree in general that it was definitely the tour that tipped the scales against Meghan. It was grueling, she and Harry were active and engaged every day, she baked banana bread, she was pregnant – every thing about it (minus a few quibbles about her clothes) resulted in overwhelming positive press for the Sussexes.

I cant decide if that positive press put Will and Kate over the edge, or if it was the fear that they would be expected to maintain that type of schedule on future tours.

    • Some chick says:

Totally. It is entirely possible to not read things. I do it every day, and I don’t even have an assistant. (Just cats, haha. They don’t read ANYthing. Except, somehow, the clock.)

  9. Becks1 says:

I think she is not reading it – so there is plausible deniability there and she can say she didnt read it – but I am sure someone is reading it for her lol and she knows what is being said.

She’s a smart cookie. She knows the longer this goes on, the worse and worse it looks for the sources…..here, the Cambridges….and she doesnt have to do a damn thing to actually counteract the stories.

I do think she needs to get back out there with a few appearances though.

    • Cerys says:

I think you are right. Meghan does well at public engagements. She is always prepared and shows interest in everything around her. The more people see that, the more they will appreciate her and the “palace sources” will then start to look bad.

    • Liz version 700 says:

Becks1 I have to say I think you are absolutely right. She seems to be very smart and knows how to play this game. Sit back and enjoy the show. The more this unfolds the more I wonder if the reports that Will and Kate are not geniuses are incredibly accurate.

  10. Nina Simone says:

I feel so bad for her. This must have been such a tough week for her. She doesn’t deserve this. The animosity and vitriol in the articles were barely disguised. AND she’s pregnant :((

    • Adee says:

      So true.

She’s probably made the British royals even more popular and modernized.
She’s a royal who doesn’t just talk about working but ACTUALLY does it .
This is the thanks she gets?

They need to back off and let her focus on her duties, husband and baby for now.

      • Exactly. They wanted and got so much positive press for being so “accepting, blah blah” of Meghan and Doria, well that’s all gone now. The truth is in everyone’s face. I get Meghan loves Harry, but she is really paying a price for marrying him. I hope she doesn’t read this trash.

This whole thing makes the RF look really bad to me. None of them look good here, from the leaks to the press to the fact that they’ve done nothing to counteract these attacks.

    • lily says:

Harry was away all week in Africa. What a dolt. Apparently, it was supposed to be a 2-day trip but turned into much longer.

  11. Joy says:

God forbid a woman who has spent years actually working continue to do so. I guess she should have locked herself in a cabinet for 8 years and just talked about being keen to work but never doing it.

  12. Lolo says:

Ah yes, the surest way to get people to believe you are not reading the press is to plant a story in the press about how you are not reading what they write, then throw in that you believe the press (whose articles you are most definitely NOT reading) are out to get you but it’s ok because they will get what’s coming to them eventually. Not that you will know, of course, as you won’t be reading!

  13. Amelie says:

Given that she is such a yogi, her believing in karma makes sense. If anything, yoga is probably what centers her and gives her the strength to ignore all this if she is as dedicated as we have been led to believe.

  14. KK2 says:

The article says Harry reads the papers but Meghan “tries her best” not to read the negative stories about her, and that she “is aware of the news and whats going on.” So contrary to what the headline suggests, Meghan (or her camp) isn’t saying she completely ignores everything, just that she tries not to read negative stuff about herself. Which is I think the best thing you can do for your sanity and is completely believable. Obviously her staff (and Harry) is monitoring her press. That’s part of their job. Doesn’t mean she has to read everything. I don’t think there’s anything disingenuous here.

  15. Lilly (with the double-L) says:

I hope she’s not reading any of it, let other people worry about it. There are times when I break from news, social media, etc and it’s only a storm to people involved, if you don’t know anything about it life, work, chores go on, especially when preparing for a new baby and home.

  16. Mark says:

Meghan is right, karma is a real thing.

  17. Sassy says:

Look who wrote the original article the Middleton’s long time spokeswoman LOL
That’s says it all right there.

  18. Paris says:

British press bully her everyday. Everyday.
This is so disgusting! I feel sorry for her and her baby.
Why it is OK to hate and bully strong, independent and passionate woman who isn’t afraid to speak her mind?

  19. Sv says:

The British press has tried to character assisinate from the moment the relationship became public. She’s been through so many cycles of this in the last two years, and stuck to the never complain/never explain. She’s eventually come out on top every time. Hopefully she has learned from that experience and it gives her the confidence and disciple going forward. Thankfully she also has high profile women who deal with similar situations as friends as well so there is support outside the firm as well.

    • Some chick says:

Yeah, I have no doubt Serena is a sympathetic ear, for one. Haters gonna hate. Especially strong, outspoken, intelligent woc. It makes them feel all insecure and sht.

  20. me says:

Oh Karma better be f*cking real. I’ve had family members treat me like shit, and say horrible lies. I always keep my mouth shut because I truly believe their karma will get them one day. It’s hard though. Sometimes you just want to scream and shout at how unfair things can be. People can be so cruel, especially ones that share the same blood as you. That’s why I think it’s good to cut out toxic people from your life. Just because you share DNA doesn’t mean you have to put up with their sh*t.

    • april says:

me – I’m in a similar situation after being the executor of my parents’ estate. It is true that “what goes around comes around,” what you give out you get back,” and “you reap what you sow.” Some terrible things have happened to some members of my family. For spiritual guidance I read a lot of spiritual books and listen to Joel Osteen. These things help a lot.

  21. Betsy says:

I hope she continues to rise above it. All press is cyclical for Brits, but the cycles get compressed when someone gets jealous and starts pumping out the negative stories. I see William behind this. I know he’s long been rumored to be petty and a real piece of work, but is it possible that he’s developed a legitimate mental illness?

  22. lanne says:

Let’s look at her supposed “crimes”:
    1) Not wearing a hat when given a subtle hint that she might consider wearing one
    2) crossing her legs while sitting
    3) closing her own car door
    4) requesting a tiara from a given list, told later she couldn’t wear it, and then daring to ask why?
    5) wearing white at her wedding
    6) getting up at 5am
    7) sending 6-7 emails to staff in one day, filled with ideas
    8) requesting some air freshener for a musty old chapel.
    9) wearing a heavy coat on the day of a cousin’s wedding
    10) stating publically that she is pregnant 3 days after said wedding takes place
    11) somehow contributing to the tears of the DoC without likely being present at the fitting

    Weigh this against:
    1) not cracking when her horrible family talked shit about her for months
    2) creating her own project by meeting Grenfell victims on her own and assembling a cook book
    3) raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for said charity
    4) completing 74 engagements on a 16 day tour while pregnant
    5) writing and delivering 3 speeches on said tour
    6) baking banana bread for a host, and showing genuine interest in meeting other people on the tour
    7) increasing the number of people who pay attention to the Royal Family

Which list is more important? Apparently, the first one. So much for a modern Royal family. The message? Try hard, do your best, get slammed for it. But if she did nothing, she would be slammed for that, too. I guess her biggest fault is that she exists, period.

Here’s another plug for #mypalacesource. I’ve been laughing all day.

  23. TyrantDestroyed says:

I’d wish karma was real and would come around for a lot of evil people in this planet especially some world leaders.

  24. justthefacts says:

Wow! Frogmore Cottage is not a desirable location for a young couple, but I could see an OLDER, retired couple enjoying it:

    1) Frogmore Cottage has a “GRADE II” Historic Protection. Beyond changing the paint color and adding furnishings, not much else can be altered. Therefore, you can’t remove walls to create open spaces, like creating an open plan kitchen for entertaining. It’s just a whole lot of small rooms, typical of this era.
    2) It’s below a noisy Heathrow flight path. Not ideal for a newborn.
    3) 40 – 60 minutes from London – away from all the action.
    4) Overlooking an often empty event venue location – Frogmore House. Eerie!
    5) Includes a graveyard. Not a desirable attribute for real estate.
    6) Lacks the prestige factor. Was built as a servant’s quarters.

Can’t imagine they’d be happy entertaining celebrity friends here.

Isn’t there another home they can live in? Must be other options. Let’s brainstorm some! What about all those gorgeous homes we see in BBC Dramas?

    • Piper says:

Harry’ selecting to move home that his family will feel safe, trust and love… much more important to them than prestige clearly.

Also, the house has family burials. Many family land have YOUR family plots. Not creepy, mainly ignored. Beautiful and private. Royal staff have proven not to trusted- no way to trust them around their baby, his wife and not make her uncomfortable since they’re just spying and bringing negativity to his family.

The house wasn’t built for staff but housed staff. Henry has lots of power and the fact that he’s moving to Frogmore says more about KP, family and staff being horrible and want to get away which is why he’s moving.

      • Justthefacts says:

Beautiful and private, with planes constantly flying overhead from Heathrow. The cottage is in a noisy flight path. Not great for kids, or baby naptime. It’s actually very stressful living under a flight path. There are studies on this.

Not interested in prestige? Then why the lavish wedding? Why not have a low-key ceremony somewhere, and donate the rest to charity?

Of course they’re interested in prestige. A key tenant of their “brand” is prestige. Without the fancy titles, castles, cathedrals, traditions, spectacles, protocols, and jewels, there is nothing to set them apart.

That’s why Frogmore Cottage doesn’t make sense, because it’s just not prestigious or desirable, and with the historic Grade II protections, there’s no hope of transforming it.

I just figured Harry would want a nicer home for his family. Surely there are better options? Whose choice is it, anyway?
