Chris Evans on Tom Brady: ‘I really hope he’s not a Trump supporter’

Tuesday marked the one-month countdown to Avengers: Endgame, so we’ve officially entered promo mode, Alpha Level. That may annoy some but not me because I still adore Marvel promo, especially when it means they trot out their top tier heroes for new interviews and chats. First up, we have Cap himself, Chris Evans, in a full blown THR interview, talking about his politics, career aspirations and fears of a relationship enveloping him.

On people assuming he was retiring from acting: I never said the word ‘retire. It’s a really obnoxious notion for an actor to say they’re going to retire — it’s not something you retire from.

On relationships: I’m the one who fears being enveloped. I was always a really autonomous guy my whole life. Camping by myself is one of my favorite things. I really like to be with someone who also has their own thing to do as well, you know? If I’m with someone who just kind of adopts my life, that can feel a bit suffocating.

On Marvel supporting his strong Twitter comments: Marvel has never said anything. On the contrary — when I bump into Kevin Feige the first thing out of his mouth is ‘Man, I love what you’re doing [on Twitter].'”

On why he’s so vocal on Twitter: You don’t want to alienate half your audience. But I’d be disappointed in myself if I didn’t speak up. Especially for fear of some monetary repercussion or career damage — that just feels really gross to me

On Tom Brady: I don’t know. I really hope he’s not a Trump supporter. I’m just hoping he’s one of those guys that maybe supported him and now regrets it. Maybe he thought it was going to be different — and even that bothers me — but maybe there’s a chance now he just thinks Trump’s an absolute dumb shit, which he is. If he doesn’t, if he’s still on that Trump train, I might have to cut ties. It’s really tough. I think maybe a couple of years ago. I might have tried to pull some, like, mental gymnastics to compartmentalize, but I don’t know if I can anymore. So I’m just hoping he’s woken up.

On doing a musical: I want to do a musical so badly, man. Someone told me they’re [remaking] Little Shop of Horrors and I was like, ‘Oh, can I be down? Please? Can I be the dentist?’ When I first came out here, early 2000s, there were rumblings about Spielberg maybe doing West Side Story. That’s one of my favorite musicals. I did it when I was in high school. And obviously he’s doing it now, and I called my team and they were like, Chris — maybe Krupke. You can’t. You’re too old. It’s so hard to hear.

On finding Captain America’s character: There’s no real darkness to him. How do I make this guy someone you want to watch? I don’t get jokes. I’m not Wolverine. I don’t have dead parents, like Batman. I’m just, like, ‘Hi, I’ll walk your dog. I’ll help you move.’

How Avengers: Endgame ends: After I die by Tony’s hand, I just said, You know what? I can’t watch this. This one’s really good. I choked up like three times. It’s hard. Seeing my own death. It’s going to be a long movie, that’s for sure. The first edit clocked in over three hours. My funeral’s like an hour.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

I probably don’t need to say this, but I will: the last part about how Endgame ends is a joke. That’s not how it ends. Endgame ends with the spectacular musical number that Evans is eager to do. The biggest surprise is how amazingly light on his feet Thanos turns out to be.

I admit when I first saw the pull quote about Evans being enveloped by a relationship, my mind went all kinds of dirty. But when I pulled it back out of the gutter, I understood what he’s saying. I believe in respecting each other’s hobbies but there’s no reason to adopt all of them. I need some areas of life that are just mine. But it was his comments on Brady that impressed me the most. They were thoughtful and honest and I bet getting himself to that place was hard to do. Good for him for examining those views. Speaking of politics, the article explains that Evans’ congressional visits were to conduct interviews for a political website he’s co-founding with Mark Kassen and Joe Kiani, to be called A Starting Point, that strives, “to create informed, responsible and empathetic citizens.”

You know, I’m shopping Chrises currently, at least until Hemsworth gets himself out of that stupid Hulk Hogan nonsense. So that moves Evans here into Hecate’s Preferred Chris slot. Especially after I spent a good amount of time with the photos in that article.

He is at the peak of his physical beauty, but after reading that interview I have to say I would bone him if he looked like Bill Gates. This was brave.

And to see him openly struggling over relationships with trump voters…feel ya Chris!

  2. Shrute’s beet farm says:

He’s always been at the top of my Chris-Chris-Chris-Chris-and-Chris rankings. My friends make fun of that, but I can’t help but like the guy. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • Snazzy says:

Me too. He’s my fave Chris

      • Alissa says:

He’s mine too! For me, it’s Evans, closely followed by Hemsworth, sort of distantly followed by Pine. Pratt is no longer on my list.

    • ds says:

for me too. sure, he has that bro look going but in a fun way. i like him.

    • Salted Watermelon says:

Who is the fifth Chris? I always thought there were four: Hemsworth, Pine, Evans, and Pratt. Am I missing out on another beautiful Chris?

      • Shrute’s beet farm says:

My bad! Clearly there’s too many famous Chrises right now, I can’t keep track! 😆

      • Ifeoma says:

        Chris Brown. Lol

      • Shrute’s beet farm says:

        Fuck no to Chris Brown

That’s definitely not who I meant

ETA: not jumping down your throat, I just use the f word like I breathe.

      • pottymouth pup says:

Chris O’Dowd (for those of us who think a great sense of humor is critical)

      • Kebbie says:

        Lol’d at Chris brown

      • lucy2 says:

Yes, pottymouth pup, O’Dowd would be my preferred too! But without him I lean towards Pine.
My brain recognizes that Chris Evans is attractive, but I don’t get “the feeling” of a crush or anything, you know?

      • Erinn says:

O’Dowd is always best Chris in my heart.

    • Nikki says:

YEASSSS~~ I love me some Chris Evans and side-eyed when people picked the other Chrises. But, to each their own. This Chris just seems like the type of guy I would want to hang out with

  3. Lightpurple says:

I read the whole interview yesterday. It’s a good one.

Marvel definitely doesn’t interfere in its actors expressing their political views on Twitter or other outlets. Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Don Cheadle, and Samuel J. Jackson don’t hold back and they often come to one another’s defense.

    • Darla says:

Agree, its so many of them. I thought it would be a great thing if the cast came out and did a fundraising event for the special olympics. Avengers Assemble or something. It could be done quite well, and I am sick to my stomach over this monstrous administration punching down. Now they are punching the Special Olympics. There is no bottom.

      • Lightpurple says:

They’re actually doing charity work around the premiere of Endgame. Donations to various charities of the actor’s choice can win the donor a trip to the premiere with the actor. Chris’s charity is Christopher’s Haven (it’s named for a boy who had cancer), which provides services to kids receiving treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital. He’s done a lot of work with them.

Organizing something else around Special Olympics is a possibility

  4. Lucy says:

    I love this Chris.

  5. Maum says:

Ever since he emerged with shorn hair in Sunshine I have had a crush on him.

  6. Megan says:

Ugh, I have always found him to be the embodiment of white male privilege. Brady had a MAGA hat in his Patriots locker. Does Chris really not know where Brady stands? It’s nice that he gets to tweet without fear of monetary loss or career damage, but a lot of people have to make the “gross” decision to protect their job and career.

    • Shrute’s beet farm says:

I mean…if you read the article he clearly says he hopes Tom only initially supported Trump and now realizes he’s nuts—I think he even says that even if that were the case, it doesn’t sit well with him.

    • Lightpurple says:

Lagarette Blount and Donta Hightower had MAGA hats in the Patriots locker room too. Trump sent an entire case of them to the team and they were placed in everyone’s lockers. All of them, including the one in Brady’s, were gone the next day and he was never seen wearing the thing. Sorry, people really need more than a hat that was sent to dozens of people in the same room to make a claim of support. Nobody really knows where Brady stands; he has made a point since his career started that he will not discuss politics other than to say politely vague things about any candidate.

      • Alissa says:

Plus Giselle responded to someone’s comment on IG asking if they voted for Trump with a very clear “NO!!!”

Besides that, I know a lot of people bought into the “he’s a business man, he’ll focus on that” stuff. My husband is one, although I tried desperately to point out why that was incorrect. Now he says that he’s ashamed and embarrassed that he voted for Trump, and if anyone asked he wouldn’t want to tell them that he did. He is angry about a lot of things regarding Trump – just last week we were talking about how Trump couldn’t have been elected without division already being in place, but he has incited and increased the division to an unbearable amount and never speaks against the people who commit violence and racism in his name. And that is so much more longterm damage to the country than any economical benefit.

So I get what he was saying about Brady. If anyone is still supporting Trump after the past two years, then they are who they are.

      • lucy2 says:

It’s really appalling that anyone felt it was appropriate to put those in their employees lockers. I mean, we know what kind of guy the owner is, but it’s still so inappropriate.

Brady has said that he doesn’t pay any attention to politics. Which is also lousy, because he can only do that because of his ridiculous privilege.

Are Chris and Brady real life friends? Because if so, talking about this in a magazine seems really odd. Or is he just talking as a Patriots fan?

      • oddly says:

@lucy2…..I’m not from the USA, so have no horse in this race, but saying he thinks he doesn’t need to pay attention to politics because he has white male, celebrity fame/money privilege is rather silly considering that only 47% percent of the eligible voting population cast a ballot in the midterm elections and that was a 50-Year High and just 58% in the presidential elections . Statistics show that of the 53% who didn’t turn up in 2018 the majority were from non-white , poorer backgrounds.

Voting is compulsory for all registered voters in my country of birth, you can register to vote when you are 18 years old and you then stay on the electoral role for life unless you cease to be a citizen. You can file a blank ballot in the box or write rude words all over it if you don’t want to participate but you are fined if you don’t turn up to the polling booth or send in a postal ballot. It makes everyone do their duty because every citizen is legally required to make a decision on the country’s future via the ballot box.

  7. Lexilla says:

As a non-fan of Marvel/Avengers/comics I’m confused. Is there really a Cap death or musical number in Endgame? Because if either is true I might just have to see it.

    • Caitrin says:

The rumor is that Cap will die in Endgame, yes, but a musical number WOULD be hilarious.

    • Lightpurple says:

Probably not, he was joking about it, but he does want to do a musical. He did musical theater has a kid – it’s his mom’s thing – and quite a few of the Avengers, including RDJ and Jeremy Renner have good singing voices.

    • deezee says:

No there isn’t. The musical was a joke and what Chris said was also said in jest but probably based on fansite speculation.

    • Prairiegirl says:

Here’s hoping it’s in the blu ray blooper reel!

    • Brie says:

They should do a Carpool Karaoke during promo for Endgame.

  8. Lindy79 says:

I never have dreams about celebs or that but I will happily admit, after I saw this article and read it, I had one about him.

    He’s aging amazingly.

  9. Jess says:

He’s now my top Chris. Love that he called out Brady like that (don’t see those Damon or Affleck – who love to pretend their liberal but are so wrapped up in their privilege it’s a joke). And he’s great on Twitter.

  10. Lizzie says:

he seems very sweet but when it comes to brady and trump – you can wish in one hand and crap in the other and see which one gets filled first…

    • Darla says:

Ah, one of my grandma’s favorite sayings. You are likely right, but I love that Evans just put Brady in the hot seat.

  11. Miss M says:

He is my second fave Chris. This interview makes him my temporary first. Come on, Chems…werk!

  12. Chef Grace says:

I am afraid Chris is going to have his first man crush heart break with Brady.
I understand what he means about the relationship thing. I call it sock over the head feeling.
Love this man. He is not afraid to speak out.

  13. lower case lila says:

If you go onto social media, all the trolls don’t like what Chris Evans said about Tom Brady. You think Tom Brady was the god of football.

    • Darla says:

Yeah I saw some of them tweeting “Chris WHO?” and I was like yeah, sure, you don’t know who Captain America is. Others were swearing to boycott Endgame.

      • Lightpurple says:

They fail to learn from their own idiocy. They boycotted Captain Marvel too because Brie Larson is too much a feminist for them and look how that turned out.

      • Darla says:

        LOL @ lightpurple – I know! It’s so great.

      • Prairiegirl says:

Yeah, sure, boycott Endgame and the payoff they’ve been waiting for after 10 years of moviegoing. God those guys are such snowflakes.

  14. Kealeen says:

Did he meet with any female lawmakers after smiling with the conservative douche-bros who want control over our bodies? I would think that would help to make “empathetic citizens.” Chris Pine all day.

    • Lightpurple says:

Yes, he met with several female lawmakers, both Democrats and Republicans.

    • BaronSamedi says:

I mean I get what you’re trying to say here but: Has Chris Pine said ANYTHING about Trump, female bodily autonomy or otherwise even slightly political in the last couple of years?

This is apples and oranges and Chris Pine would lose that fight. Staying silent in these trying times is definitely not a better look than being out there and standing for something at least.

      • Darla says:

Agree Baron! Strongly! Silence is not a good look these days. You can bet I do take note of it too.

      • Pulplove says:

This exactly! Pine seems more interested in making snarky remarks about “Infinity War” or bragging about his manhood.

I really respect Evans for his kind of use of social media and what he said in that interview. I also liked that at Jenny Slate’s urging, he read Rebecca Solnit’s The Mother of All Questions, a collection of essays about the insidious side effects of patriarchy.

And the pictures are simply gorgeous!

      • Margot says:

That ‘Jenny Slate urging’ thing is taken from his last year interview where the interviewer noted that Chris read that book while with Slate. So if anything, it’s just a misquoting situation, not something he’s actually quoted saying.

      • LivePlantsCleanAir says:

So, I just ordered this book (I’d never heard of) from Amazon.ca…..does that mean I’m responding to Jenny Slate urging, or I just want to share something I know Chris has read, too..?

    • Katherine says:

Umm yes. Quite a few of them? And I agree I don’t see how Pine is your choice in the context of politics. Has he ever said anything one way or the other? Evans has spoken out on a variety of issues including abortion and sexual assault. And, in a fairly mind boggling statement in today’s day and age has admitted what he doesn’t know precisely because of his white male privilege. I think he’s pretty ahead of the pack for a rich straight white male on those measures.

      • Darla says:

Evans even defended Christine Blasey Ford from Trump on twitter. I never forgot that because I was so sickened by what they were doing to her, and you could tell by what he tweeted at trump that he was too.

  15. little bird says:

pine is usually the Superior Chris (in my mind) but this feature…. idk man, i could be swayed.

  16. booney says:

Really enjoyed this interview. He sounds like he’s matured a lot. I hope he settles down with someone not desperate for fame a la Robert Downey Jr and his producer wife, Susan.

  17. Maddie says:

    Oh captain, my captain.

My favorite Chris. I’m gonna be crying so hard if/when cap dies.

    • Incredulous says:

You say that but I reckon – if the timeline shenanigans prove true – you’ll lose it when he wields Mjolnir.

  18. Valiantly Varnished says:

I read the interview last night. One thing I have always liked about Chris is his willingness to not seem cool. He talked about his social anxiety, his going to therapy, his love of musical theater. And I like what he said about Brady – time will tell if he is actually willing to it though. I have always believed that Chris Evans is the best of all the Chrises.

  19. Amare says:

Oh man, I wish I saw the cute like the rest of you do because he’s eloquent and seems like a decent guy but I just don’t. He looks like every third guy my age I see in the places I grew up/lived in the Midwest US and western Europe – just really generic. The only place that he doesn’t look like every third guy is when I go visit my family in Ethiopia for obvious reasons. More of him left for all you ladies I suppose. Dig in.

  20. Grey says:

I just need to say, I honestly have the hugest effing crush on Chris Evans, and I can’t hold it back anymore haha. My husband always teases me that he is my “other boyfriend” and whew, I have had some steamy dreams about that man haha. But seriously, if I met him in real life I would probably just be frozen and never say how much I love him… which might be best, now that I think about it. This interview OR PICTURES did not lessen the crush in any way.

  21. Faye G says:

He’s grown and matured a lot in recent years, I really admire his political viewpoints and willingness to speak up about things. The fact that he’s okay with standing up for his beliefs even if he risks losing fans speaks volumes. He’s always been my fave Chris and this just reaffirms my admiration!

  22. VeronicaLodge says:

My favorite Chris is my guy, but Captain America is a strong second!

  23. Megan Hurwitt says:

The best Chris. King of the Chrises

  24. Naddie says:

I love being surprised by people, and this guy has done it to me in and out of screen. What he did to captain America is not easy : we’re in the anti hero era, and then he comes with a sweet, traditional guy and makes everyone love him.

    • Katherine says:

I think it’s because his portrayal of Cap isn’t sweet exactly. He’s well mannered sure but he’s kind of prickly and stubborn about what he thinks is right. And that’s usually defending against bullies. But his personality as Evans portrays him is more “I’ll be damned if this is going to go down this way and I’m gonna fight like hell to do what’s right even if you don’t like it”.
It would have been easy to leave him as kind of a naive goody two shoes but Marvels creative direction and Evans really added depth. And then it coincided exactly with a bully being in the White House. So it’s like people are back to wanting a hero!

  25. oddly says:

‘I can’t play Tom Brady if he supports Trump’………Really, with that logic no actor should play Hitler, Castro, Al Capone, Churchill , Ted Bundy, Margaret Thatcher etc if they don’t support their life choices or political views?

    It’s called acting Chris.

    • LivePlantsCleanAir says:

@oddly ~ They are all dead. He’d be bringing attention to a live person, one possibly supporting Trump, which would make Brady bigger. Anyone with good sense does not want to give these people a bigger platform. Chris ACTING Brady would do that.
It’s called being sensible and caring and committed to action that raises others rather than puts them down, oddly……

  26. Wood Dragon says:

Ahhhhhh…he’s so charming. What a treat today. 1st we get Keanu and now Evans. So nice. Actually I would love to see these two team up in some kind of witty, cunning action adventure.
