Johnny Depp makes brief appearance at Comic-Con, geeks freak out

As more bits and pieces of Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland have been released, we’ve all been getting excited. It’s not just the Deep-loonies who were squealing like little girls over the first pictures of the cast in character. It wasn’t just sci-fi dweebs who were crossing and re-crossing their legs in excitement with the first trailer for the film. But all of that paled in comparison to massive geek-out that occurred when Johnny Depp decided to make a brief appearance at Comic-Con Thursday evening. Even the Twihards stopped for a moment to breathe in the same air as the original Pattz-esque heartthrob. But when I say Johnny made a “brief” appearance at Comic-Con, I mean it. He only said five words to the crowd. Although I bet that was enough for at least a dozen spontaneous orgasms:

There had been murmurs that Johnny Depp, one of the stars of Tim Burton’s way weird live-action adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, would drop by this morning’s Disney 3-D panel.

And—would you look at that!—he did.

In fact, Depp stopped by, said five words and then totally just left.

Here’s what went down: After screening a custom-made trailer for his Comic-Con fans, director Burton asked the crowd if they would like to meet the “imaginary friend” that follows him around.

The crowd cheered and Depp, who plays the Mad Hatter, walked onstage in a button-up shirt and fitted black vest. He had long bangs sweeping the side of his face, and wore a thick leather bracelet.

After several moments of cheering, Depp whispered into the mic: “Hey. Happy to be here.” And then, poof, he was gone.

Moderator Patton Oswalt told the crowd that Depp could reappear later in the day, so “be nice to every guy you see dressed like Jack Sparrow.”

Meanwhile, Burton said he’s still filming the CGI-heavy fantasy flick, due next spring, and that he feels there’s a “white rabbit with a stop watch” timing him.

In terms of plot, he also dished that there was an effort to make Alice (Mia Wasikowska) more active in the story rather than a bunch of “weird scenes” happening to her. Oh, and remember that Depp isn’t the only person in this movie: Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter also star.

[From E! Online]

Right now I have Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” playing in my mind. “Go ask Alice/When she’s ten feet tall…” Damn, now I’m thinking about the coolness that it Grace Slick. Anyway, here’s a fun fact: one of my favorite Johnny Depp performances is where he was playing the strung-out, drugged-up Raoul Duke, the alter ego of Hunter S. Thompson, in Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas. In a critical scene in the film, Raoul and Benicio del Toro’s character Dr. Gonzo are listening to Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit”. There are several allusions to the band and the song throughout the film. Just a little fun Johnny Depp and “Alice in Wonderland” related fact!

why does he always look unshowered like a sleezy salesman or something…

  2. m says:

I know that many people consider him to be some sort of demigod and he appears to be really nice but this obsessive gushing over him is still too much. Not every woman is attracted to him. He’s good looking but short and slightly feminine

  3. barneslr says:

Johnny is perfect in every way and can do no wrong. Ever.

  4. Candi says:

    I’m not a comic geek,and I live in Canada,so I did not attend Comic-Con.

But for Johnny Depp,I might have made the exception, even for a 5 word sentence.

After all,he is most women’s wet dream,as well as many men as well.lol

  5. Fiestarter says:

Compared to other actors, Depp is perfect. He CAN act, he is widely known to be fantastic to work with, he is low key, he is nice looking and he chooses unique projects to be in. Yeah, I think he is pretty close to perfect. And before anyone says, well why doesn’t he marry the mother of his children, she is the one that is more resistant to getting married than he and they are a happy family without the marriage certificate.

  6. headband says:

Yeah, his humility makes up for greasy looking hair by a long shot.

  7. iced opal says:

OMG! I’m with you barneslr! Just perfect.

    F*ck!

Mr. Jaundice and I were considering a long roadtrip out west, and San Diego and Comic-Con were both kicked around . . . (I had no idea Burton and Depp would attend, we’re both just big nerds who love Cali.)

I wonder if Depp is down with KOL . . .

lol @ JaundiceMaci, Kingdom of Loathing is awesome.

That was a super random mention and I think I love you for having done so.

yea,it’s just refresing to have an actor who’s an ‘artiste’,rather than a celebrity. At least in his own mind,he’s an artiste, and handles the attention well,if not uncomfortably.
someone who’s focused on the films, and who is a unique character, anyway. Somebody doing their own thing is rare in films or hollywood.
Can you think of any others?
    I like ralph fiennes,joseph gordon-levitt….
as far as doing their own thing goes.
yea, there are other decent actors, but not so many who are truly in it for ‘the art’…those who are,are just more attractive,IMO.
As for females: Zooey D.,….not many others! Though I think a few try to stay focused on the work-charlize theron, kate winslett…but their stars have gotten big so it’s hit or miss there. oh,and the always lovely Uma. An artiste.

Depp loves the old schoolers-and i think his appeal harkens back to that-focused on the work.
angelica huston, faye dunaway….carry themselves differently than the celeb-sluts today. it’s all about publicity now.

    Love me some KOL!

Im such a Geek. I would have just exploded right there on the spot if I got to be in the same room as Depp and Burton at the same time.

  14. yae says:

Seems like a humble man at heart. Very nice display of humility.

  15. monkey toes says:

i just watched him in public enemies and love him no matter what 😀

  16. lori says:

Why has he had that same, stupid greasy hair hanging in his face with the mustache and goatee for, like, 15 or 20 years now?! Take a shower and get a haircut, Johnny. The last time you were hot was around 1990. And get rid of the fake humility. It’s not attractive.
