Kelly Clarkson has become one of my favorite celebrities. She has a great way of not succumbing to the pressures of fame. She doesn’t give in to body criticism – and she’s received a ton of it. In fact, Kelly seems more confident and happy than ever. Whenever I see her interviewed I’m always impressed by how genuinely friendly and level-headed she seems. It honestly boggles my mind that some celebs act so high and mighty, and others like Kelly seem like they could be your next door neighbor.
Kelly’s doing her third cover for Self magazine, and in it she talks about her positive body image.
Kelly Clarkson admits her size fluctuates in the September issue of Self mag. “My happy weight changes,” the American Idol champ says. “Sometimes I eat more; sometimes I play more. I’ll be different sizes all the time.” Clarkson, 27, says she doesn’t care though. (In June, she admitted she was tired of hearing “the fat joke” because she’d accepted her curves.)
“When people talk about my weight, I’m like, ‘You seem to have a problem with it; I don’t,” she explains. “I’m fine! I’ve never felt uncomfortable on the red carpet or anything.”
The singer tells the mag she’s been working out with CrossFit, a strength training and cardio program used by police academies and military special operations, according to its Web site.
“I love it! It’s like boot camp,” she says. “You never work out more than 35 minutes, but it’s so intense. You do things like box jumps, then 50 sit-ups, then 50 squats and then running.
“Me, my backup singers and my hair-and-makeup girl do it together. They laugh at me, because most of the time they’re like, ‘Oh, my God, I don’t want to go,’ and I’m the one saying, ‘I’m ready!’” she goes on. “It makes me feel like GI Jane. It’s very empowering. I feel like I can whup a–! And in my shows, everybody has noticed. They’re like, ‘Dude, you have 100 percent more energy!’”
[From Us Weekly]
I pass one of those boot camp fitness places everyday and their routines look hardcore. Like, you’d probably rather beat yourself over the head with a mallet than endure five minutes of it. Or at least I would. But I respect the hell out of anyone that would willingly put themselves through that. Obviously Kelly works out, but everyone’s got their own shape and their own metabolism. She’s under no obligation to go to hardcore extremes to get some teeny tiny celebrity approve body. She became famous for winning a competition (American Idol) that seeks out talent in regular folks. She seems to still carry a lot of that attitude with her, and I mean that in the very best sense. And ultimately, the only thing that matters is that Kelly’s happy with her body, and she’s always made it clear that she is.

I really like her and her attitude, but it would have been nice if she hadn’t allowed SELF to airbrush off 30 lbs. while she’s trying to say she’s happy with herself the way she is. The GMA photos are the real her and she should stick up for that.

if she means it, why is her pic shopped to oblivion? She is obliviously two radically different sizes in the top and bottom pics!

hatsu: All celebrities, regardless of their size, are photoshopped to hell and back on magazine covers, so assuming that that the touch ups are a sign of Kelly’s insecurities is ridiculous.

white pants and a white background….hmm…what could they be trying to hide?

If she really wanted to, I’m sure she can put her foot down about the amount of touch-ups done to her photos, a la Kate Winslet. Its like auto tune for songs, no? If you don’t like the way you sound, enhance it digitally. Maybe she can pull her clout and do a Death Cab For Cutie kinda thing…..she is still going to pretty.
(and by the way, I’m not saying she can’t sing naturally, its a, a synonym)

i’m glad she feels comfortable, because there’s no reason she shouldn’t.
sometimes I can’t get over how stupid humanity is… I mean, sesame street has to have a whole episode dedicated to how people come in different shapes and colors and how that’s ok because apparently people are too dense to understand that? even though mother nature has made it ABUDANTLY clear that variety is the pervading theme on this planet… I mean let’s face it, there are millions of different species of animals on this planet.
there isn’t even that great of a variation between human beings… some might be bigger, some smaller, some lighter some darker… etc etc… but fundamentally, they are the same. and we can’t even handle THAT much variety… if there is a god, he must be really proud of how admirably his work has turned out../sarcasm… :/

She looks like a chunky Miley. She’s cute tho. Nice personality also. Too bad her music sucks.

I hope she really is comfortable about her weight though the photoshop says otherwise. I think it’s more that she often looks like a mess with tacky, bad fitting clothes. A slob, in other words.

Kelly Clarkson is an ungrateful spoiled brat who never thanked American Idol for giving her a career, all she ever did was put the show down by making crude remarks about it and calling it”Ghetto Idol” when she was on there….Every chance she got she always had a smart or sarcastic remark to make about Clive Davis or Simon.
Kelly has replaced her once beautiful voice with a high pitched screaming screeching sound that I guess her handlers and her classify as music…her weight is the least of her problems…she needs to work on her smug attitude and look in the dictionary under the word ‘Humble’…if anybody wants to hear how a singer should really sound just go to myspace.com/theonlybrelandkent

hatsu , Kate Winslet has been air brushed before. After the photos are taken the artist haves no control over them.

the pose has a lot to do with it also… the tilt to the side minimizing the width of one’s hips…

Yeah photo is waaaaay photo shopped. She doesn’t have to be a size 2, but looks like she could be much more toned and tighter.

Look, I’m happy she’s happy she looks like a little two-legged porkchop onstage, I just don’t care. All these dullards feel compelled to say that apparently so after a while you just get numb to this point of view.

Well, G. was right Ramona. Stop spamming. No one cares about whoever it is you’re promoting.

It seems like people spend their lives on here talking about celeberties. Seriously, just leave it alone. If Kelly did have it photoshopped, and still said that she feels comfortable with her bpdy, let her say it. She might just be trying to be a role model for little kids who have a larger shape then some and is telling then that it isn’t a crime to be chunky. But pretty much 90% of the people who left comments on this post are all critisizing her on the way she looks or her singing abilities. If you don’t like her, then just be mature and leave it alone instead of acting like an idiot and say rude things about her. If doing things like that make you feel better, then you have some serious issues.

I think how bigger the star the more control they have over their pictures being photoshopped. I was surprised to see Cate Blanchett on the cover of Vogue a couple of months back with actual LINES around her eyes. The were faint, but clearly there. I loved it!!!
I forgot who it is this month on Vogue, but she looks complety fake and all AND she is a nobody.

Of all magazines, SELF should at least exert some self-control and not airbrush.
