David Letterman apologizes to his wife for bangin’ those staffers

Monday afternoon was the first taping of The Late Show since David Letterman dropped the bomb Thursday night. Friday’s show was pretaped on Thursday, just to clarify. On his first night back, Dave first joked, then got serious once again about the extortion attempt and his affair(s) with his staff. During the opening monologue, Letterman used the floor to discuss how upset his wife Regina Lasko was, and he apologized to her and to his staff. One of the first jokes was a zinger directed at disgraced South Carolina governor Mark Sanford: “”I’ll be honest with you folks. Right now, I would give anything to be hiking on the Appalachian Trail… I get in the car this morning and the navigation lady wasn’t speaking to me. Ouch.” Then David got serious:

“Late Show” host David Letterman spoke about his past relationships with female staffers again on tonight’s program, which taped this afternoon in midtown Manhattan. According to an audience member, Letterman said he didn’t want to talk again about his past affairs, but since “everybody wants to talk about it,” he would. He apologized to his staff, who he said were being hounded by questions from the media.

“I’m terribly sorry that I put the staff in that position,” he said, according to a transcript provided by his production company. “Inadvertently, I just wasn’t thinking ahead. And, moreover, the staff here has been wonderfully supportive to me, not just through this furor, but through all the years that we’ve been on television and especially all the years here at CBS, so, again, my thanks to the staff for, once again, putting up with something stupid I’ve gotten myself involved in.”

Letterman also noted that he had hurt his wife, who he did not mention during his original admission last week.

“Now the other thing is my wife, Regina,” he said. “She has been horribly hurt by my behavior, and when something happens like that, if you hurt a person and it’s your responsibility, you try to fix it. And at that point, there’s only two things that can happen: Either you’re going to make some progress and get it fixed, or you’re going to fall short and perhaps not get it fixed, so let me tell you folks, I got my work cut out for me.”

I don’t really know what to say about this. It’s not like Dave cheated on me, he cheated on a woman he’s had a relationship with for twenty years – who, incidentally, was one of his staffers. I don’t really believe that Dave was gross or smarmy towards any of these women – I think they likely wanted to be with him, and everyone got treated with respect. So, for argument’s sake, this is all a convoluted story about consenting adults. That’s why I haven’t gotten too worked up over it – and yet, I still expected more from Dave, because he seemed nicer, and more decent than this image I have of him now. I think Dave realizes that his image has taken a hit in a larger sense – and he’s trying to save himself by coming out ahead of everything. And I do think he’s really sorry. But who knows? Maybe he’s secretly a bastard who treats women like crap.

I guess we have a perception of certain celebrities and when they fall short of the expectation we are disappointed. The thing is he is human. I am not condoning what he did but at least he was honest about it. None of these women have said that he treated them badly or that it was a forced situation. Basically a case of consenting adults. However, his wife has every right to rake him over coals which it sounds like she is doing. I guess I will stand back and watch the situation pan out. Anything to watch other than the Gosselin hoopla.

  2. Kaboom says:

It’s hard to feel sorry for him because he’s been dishing out quite a bit to people who took similar missteps in the past, so getting washed and dried like this in public may do him some good and improve him as a person. Some of his smug might come off in the process.

There’s no advice anyone could give him and his wife on how to proceed, but if she put up with him for 20 years, she may just elect to keep him around after having him shovel large amounts of manure.

  3. Diane says:

No sympathy from me for anyone involved. I would not be surprised if Dave had an agreement with his wife to lead the lifestyle he chose with her support.

  4. Popcorny says:

Yep, Dave deserves any lumps Lasko doles. My heart goes out to her. Hopefully they’ll weather this and stay together.
Usually I’d say something like “dump the bastard” but I think their relationship is probably worth holding on to, that there is a deep love.
Their son is one of the most adorable kids I’ve ever seen.

I think Letterman’s marriage and reputation will survive all this. He won’t be facing any consequences. Pleople condemn what they what to condemn, there’s not an universal moral that works for everybody the same. Americans look at him like an hero and, even if they feel he has disappointed them as a person, they still need him as an entertainer, every week, so they will forget.

  7. Jag says:

See, that’s where I won’t budge: if he loved her, he wouldn’t have cheated on her. Period. It’s up to her to decide whether to keep him around and what kind of relationship, if any, they have from now on. I hope she takes him to the cleaners, but that’s just what I would attempt to do.

  8. Bina says:

Yeah, but how much do you want to bet we’d be seeing no public confession from him if he hadn’t been blackmailed? Chances are he’d have just gone on as before with more female staffers in the future had it all not come to light in the admittedly despicable way it has done.

  9. Westender says:

I see that the other comics are making fun of Dave’s problems lets hope they do not have any skeletons in their closets. I would bet that the day after all of Dave’s antics hit the airwaves, the tabloids were busy looking into the backgrounds and personal lives of the other late night hosts. The only reason that Dave’s affairs become known is because someone decided to try and blackmail him.

  10. ssdffs says:

The first thing I noticed when I watched him tell the story of him being blackmailed was that he never even mentioned an apology to his wife. This doesn’t seem sincere. I agree with CB. He probably realized the story of him cheating did more damage then he thought it would and is now apologizing to his wife to seem like less of a jerk. If he really meant it, he would have apologized to her the first time he revealed on air that he cheated.

  11. WhenLoveBreaksDown says:

Reports say that all of the events involving staffers happened and ended years ago, so it’s entirely possible that they, as a couple, have already dealt with it and moved on ages ago.

  12. Andrea says:

I just don’t see how Regina Lasko did not know about her Dave’s other life.

  13. Sudini says:

I really feel for Regina here. If I were her, I definitely want to leave. How can you continue with someone whose proven to be so deceitful to you? It’s disgusting that people think they can just do this to other people. I know it must be immeasurably harder to leave when there’s a child involved, but to go on with someone who’s proven to be so hurtful..I pray for her that she resolves this entire situation in her heart and heals from this.

  14. N. says:

    @when love

I agree. Sounds like all these affairs happened before their son was born, so I don’t think anything has gone on since then.

So I think his wife did know and they’ve already dealt with it, it’s just now it’s public.

    But who knows for sure…..

  15. Ally says:

It just feels to me like the media is playing into the blackmailer’s hands here. This kind of over-the-top reaction to the sleeping-with-staffer news is what he was threatening Letterman with… and lookee, we’re all proving the weight of his threat.

  16. eternalcanadian says:

That’s just pathetic. For Regina let a guy do that to her, there must have been big money involved. Such an embarrassing and pathetic situation!

  17. Lindsay says:

He should have stopped talking about it like he said he would. He is just adding fuel to the fire. The apology towards his wife and staff should have been to them not on national TV. Is he planning on talking about it every night until the media moves on?

  18. Lindsay says:

After rereading the article about the Today I am confused. Did Letterman pay him and change his mind?

Why in the world would you except a check while committing extortion? This guy is REALLY dumb.

  19. Media Distortion says:

Firstly, How can you judge David Letterman seriously he has apologized and came clean on his own intention compared to Clinton and Spitzer and others who were caught out by the public. Secondly it was consensual sex, adults having an intimate relationship (David Letterman was single during these relationships) so he hasn’t done anything wrong by his wife as these were previous to their relationship. another point is Letterman wasn’t in a position of power (President,Governor,Mayor etc.) where he had a duty to run a (State,Country, etc.) like Spitzer and those scum bags, while they were meant to run a portion of the country instead they were screwing prostitutes and wasting tax payer dollars, if anything this story has been distorted by the media. the media only tell half truths or none at all so why go after Letterman when there are bigger fish in the pond.

  20. Rosanna says:

If the guy weren’t Letterman but some conservative guy we’d never hear the end of it. How come that he gets justifications and excuses out of *women* when jon gosselin gets dissed at? Regina is NOT Kate. And yet Jon gets berated, Letterman does not.

  21. Yae says:

Hotdogs and money never make an appetizing dish. You never know who’s been handling the food. Alas, money changes hands often. Ew, the filth.

  22. crash2GO2 says:

I don’t think he’s asking for anyone’s sympathy people. Jeeze. He’s just doing what he can to mend his relationships, including the one he has with his viewers.

  23. DrM says:

Letterman doesn’t preach that he has “God’s” backing to do his work…like a fair number of political conservatives caught with their pants around their ankles…that is the big difference between him and some of the others mentioned. I feel for both he and his wife. Yup he messed up, and he’s paying for it. Big time. It’ll blow over…
