Kidnap victim Jaycee Lee Dugard on the cover of People Magazine

img033

After being kidnapped by Phillip Garrido 18 years ago and then miraculously escaping, Jaycee Dugard is finally speaking out about her life to People Magazine. They have an excerpt on their website which has a current photo of Jaycee. She looks like a normal, sweet girl, a bit younger than her 29 years. She actually reminds me of Jodie Foster a bit. Something in the eyes. The excerpt talks about Jaycee’s life right now, but doesn’t go into any specifics about what went on during those 18 years. At the end they say, “For much more on Jaycee Dugard’s new life – including stunning photographs of her family, details of her reunion with the sister she hadn’t seen since 1991 and her deepening bond with her mother – pick up the new issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday” – which implies that Jaycee didn’t talk about her time with Garrido in her interview.

After being held against her will for 18 years, much of it in a backyard hell straight out of a horror film, Jaycee Dugard wants the world to know:

“I’m so happy to be back with my family,” she tells PEOPLE.

Now living in seclusion with her mom, Terry Probyn, 50, and the two daughters – Angel, 15, and Starlit, 11 – fathered by her alleged kidnapper, Phillip Garrido, Dugard, 29, has begun the slow process of recovery. She rides horses, cooks meals and is thinking of collaborating on a book.

“They live a surprisingly normal life, considering the circumstances,” says Terry’s stepmother, Joan Curry.

[From People]

It makes sense that Jaycee isn’t talking about her 18 years as the Garrido’s captive. I’d assume that she’d never want to talk about it, but the mention of a book makes me think maybe she’s waiting to write about it on her own, instead of being questioned in an interview. Her family is good about releasing PR-appropriate information, but I can’t help but think things aren’t possibly going as smoothly as they make it seem. But beyond that, I can’t even imagine what they are going through. These are major adjustments, and it isn’t the kind of situation where you can just go pick up a book from the store to help you out. It’s highly unique. As much as I wonder about Jaycee, I wonder about her children. They never knew anything but living with Garrido. Did he act like a father to them? Did they call him Dad? Did they think their situation was how all kids lived? I have so many questions that I do really hope Jaycee talks about what went on. It’s such a horrifying and bizarre situation.

Speaking of horrifying and bizarre, Radar has some pictures of where Jaycee was living with the Garridos. She and her daughters were in a large tent and a shed in the Garridos backyard. It was packed and filthy, almost indescribably so. I’ve definitely seen pictures of worse, but you’ve got to remember – they were imprisoned here every single day for 18 years. It’s mind-boggling just to think about, and hard to process even as an outsider.

Radar also has a clip of an interview with the Dugard family’s spokesperson, who describes her daughters as bright and curious, and mentions that they are working with private tutors. I assume they have someone who’s helping Jaycee and the girls reintegrate into society – but all the media attention is going to make it even more challenging.

Whoa that was quick. I thought they would never occur in the press landscape.
I dont know what to think of it.

  2. Diwali6 says:

What happened to her is not our business. What is most important is that she is free! I am so happy for her and her daughters. She looks beautiful. May they all have long, happy, healthy lives!

  3. Firestarter says:

What a wonderful thing that she is now home with her family.

What a horrific thing to have endured, but she is home now, and hopefully will find happiness and the peace that escaped her for so long at the hands of that sick couple!

Why are my comments ALWAYS in moderation?

  4. Katyusha says:

I can’t believe she came out of that looking much younger than she is.

  5. Linda says:

She’s so beautiful!! She’ll go far.

  6. Annie says:

I agree. It’s not our business, but in this particular case, and cases like it, I think it’s important to put it out there so that it doesn’t happen again.

At least, that would be my hope anyway.

  7. Kaiser says:

She looks very Jodie Foster-ish I think. Pretty girl. Hope she’s getting lots of help.

  8. princess pea says:

Poor things. I really hope they have an excellent support system for the whole family, because this can’t be easy for any of them. And I hope those three are seeing an excellent therapist.

I’m glad they are controlling the media access to their lives, and I kind of hope this is the only article about them ever again. I know that won’t be the case, but I’d rather read about the ordeal in a book than in a flashy, SHOCKING (!!!) tabloid article.

  9. BitterBetty says:

I wish her nothing but the best.

  10. Eileen Yover says:

Eeek I wish I hadn’t looked at the photos of her old “home.” What in God’s name is wrong with people that someone does that to another human?

Bless her and her daughters and I hope they can have a peaceful life with some normalcy now.
And I hope they stick those to crazy ass pieces of sh!t in a hovel full of convicts. They have special surprises for child abductors in prison!

  11. Beth says:

I’m surprised the interview happened so soon. I’m sure she has severe emotional scars but doing interviews is probably a sign that she’s getting help and moving on. I’m not a psychologist but you always hear that talking about helps with recovery.

  12. Annie says:

It makes you sick to your stomach doesn’t it?

I can’t even fathom the kind of sick twisted mind one must possess to be capable of committing such a long-term offense.

And more of it comes out every day! We hear about this child being chained to a table near a fireplace up in norcal, then there was that Austrian man (whose name I can’t recall) who kept his own daughter in the basement below his home with his wife for 18 years or something and fathered something like 4 children with her.

    It’s disgusting.

  13. Mairead says:

I thought it WAS Jodie Foster!

  14. Kaiser says:

Mairead – Right? I saw the cover early this morning before I had my contacts in and I thought “Dear God, Jodie looks flawless.”

  15. mel says:

I agree how sickening it is that these men prey on children and take them hostage to become their sex slaves. It sickens me to know that a human being can be that cruel.

I hope both Jaycee and Elizabeth Smart can lead normal lives epsecially if they ever enter into a relationship.

  16. Legend says:

I hope People paid her a ton of money for her interview. I hope Linda @1:41 is correct and she goes far, but she has a lot to overcome. More than half her lifetime in abuse and minimal education that’s to the subhuman couple that kidnapper her.

  17. MomInNH says:

I don’t think I need to know what happened while she was gone. I’m glad she’s safe and been reunited with her family. I also wonder how her children will fare in all this. I hope they’re getting continued therapy.. all of them. I can’t imagine the horror they still deal with on a daily basis.

  18. georgiagrl says:

Time to ca$h in on a horrific story!I guess she deserves some $$ for what she went through, but People is soo exploitative, its sickening. Anyway, I wish nothing but happiness to her and her family and hope they don’t gert burned from selling their story.

  19. hatsumomo says:

Wow, she looks amazingly pretty, and she still has the exact smile from her childhood photo.
I hope she will do well, most victims imprisoned for decades do. They able to adjust and cope and live good lives after their ordeal. if she survived this long I certainly believe she has the strength to be able to overcome anything now.

  20. BitterBetty says:

georgiagrl, show some fucking respect. this isn’t Lindsy Lohan you’re commenting about.

  21. Eileen Yover says:

hatsumomo: right? Good point…can you imagine what she would say to one of us if we were whining about one of our “bad days?”
I give her permission to drop kick anyone who has the balls to tell her they’re having a bad day because of something lame. She’d be like “Unless you were held captive for 20 years….I don’t want to here it…”

  22. Allie says:

I really hope that going public isn’t going to make things worse for Jaycee and her kids. I hope that they manage to do well and pull their lives together.

  23. Lantana says:

I think I feel like a lot of others. I am so glad she is free but sickened over her horrible tragedy. I do hope she writes a book and makes millions on it, because that man robbed her of almost any chance of a normal career, a normal marriage, a normal mother-daughter relationship, both between her and her mother and her and her own daughters. Maybe she’ll be one of the ones in life whose valleys are so low that the mountaintops are absolutely sky high. I hope so.

  24. JoGirl says:

What a beautiful, strong woman! I wish her and her daughters the best, and agree with others here who are hoping that their captors are tortured and killed in prison.

  25. Green Is Good says:

Horrifying. Living in a tent for 18 years with the children she bore because she was raped. *puke*

I hope Garrido and his accomplice (WIFE) are eligible for the death penalty. At least life w/o parole. They robbed this woman of her entire childhood and young womanhood.

  26. Allie says:

Yes, she does look a lot like Jodie Foster. I’m really surprised to see she’s going public so soon. It hasn’t even been a few months yet. I’m sure this poor woman has been through absolute hell, and I wish her the best in her recovery.

  27. yadira says:

What a beautiful smile :). She has to be proud of herself for remaining so strong in the situation she was forced into. God bless her and her family. what the heck, I’m in a good mood….god bless everyone!

  28. Tiiz says:

What do her LOOKS have to do with anything? They didn’t keep her from having to experience a horrific experience and they won’t be the thing that helps her continue to stay strong and overcome her past and obstacles that lie ahead. I hope that she will find a way to supplement her life and her children’s life. She obviously has some strong opinions and a good head on her shoulder b/c she is Choosing to filter information. Interesting. Hopefully, she won’t fall into pseudo stardom…that is definitely an obstacle (ie. Gosselin’s?)

  29. Taya says:

    Katyusha..

Don’t forget, she spent 18 years either in a shack or under a covered tent. Not getting any sun exposure/UV rays will most likely make a person look much, much younger than they really are.

I just hope she and her family have peace now. Garrido and his wife should fry for what they did.

  30. Pete says:

@mel: She wasn’t a “sex” slave, because he didn’t have “sex” with her. He raped her. Why can’t you simply call her a rape victim? Calling what she went through by that term only makes it seem kinky rather than what it is (Yes, it’s a popular term but it doesn’t make it any less disturbing). Sex is always seen as consensual. Putting “slave” behind it doesn’t cancel it out. It only blurs consent and violation.

Again, sex is not rape (and vice-versa). Especially when it involves a child who is held captive by a deranged bastard.

  31. dirty martini says:

No one, no where, no how…..should say a single negative word about this woman child and whatever choices they make.

She’s lovely. Give her a wide berth, peace, love and a zillion dollars.

  32. sarahlou says:

I think its pretty clear why she has allowed herself to be photographed, she explains why in her statements. Also probably to keep the spotlight off her two daughters and to avoid papparazzi finding her eventually. She should make a lot money .. she and her daughters will need it and are more than deserving!

She is an incredibly brave young woman. I am so happy for her and her family they have been reunited.

People asking why she didnt escape and making judgements about her situation make me sick. There are some nasty people out there on related blogs. It saddens me.

  33. For Sooth? says:

I’m almost crushed. I was so hoping she would never succumb to giving an interview or photo for mass consumption and critique. Never, never do another. Please!

  34. elvisgrace says:

Also, this case hasn’t gone to court yet. Talking to the press could possibly influence or bias the jury pool, so maintaining silence on that front helps ensure this asshole gets off scot free with a due process claim or other technicalities.

  35. Jazz says:

It makes you wonder how many other people who have been missing for years are still alive and locked away somewhere. I wish all the best to her and her family.

  36. jeannified says:

    She looks like Jodie Foster!

  37. Kayleigh says:

It must be so hard to have two girls practically half her age already, and try to merge back into society and relearn everything they know. I hope she is strong about this and wish nothing but the best for the family.

  38. Annie says:

I agree. Let her make millions off this! The millions she may amass will never, never, never undo the horror she went through, and frankly, she deserves all the wonderful things possible in this world.

  39. original kate says:

what a story…it is amazing that she came out of it as normal as she appears to be. having said that, i think all the tabloids need to leave her alone. i wish her the best.

  40. Rachel says:

Time to ca$h in on a horrific story!I guess she deserves some $$ for what she went through, but People is soo exploitative, its sickening. Anyway, I wish nothing but happiness to her and her family and hope they don’t gert burned from selling their story.

    I’m with you GA girl.
The claim that people tell these stories to “help” other people is nothing but a bold-faced lie. Because you rarely hear about these victims after they sell the books. The people who I admire who have been unfortunately victims are Tori Amos, and Fran Drescher. Amos created RAINN and Fran’s experiences with sexual assault AND cancer AND to keep smiling despite such trauma is admirable.

As far as the Duggins are concerned, after this article they should focus on getting the pieces of their life back together.

When People first came out, it stayed away from exploitive stories. Not so anymore. I agree with GA. The family does however seem to have a firm grip on the information highway – pleasant change!

  42. stacy says:

@georgia girl- its fine to say People is exploitive, but for f*cks sake dont turn this horrifying experience into a money making scheme. You would be saying otherwise if it were you held captive for 18 years, having babies with a monster. SHOW SOME F*CKING RESPECT! People need to be more aware of their surroundings and others in their community. she could have been found years ago if we paid more attention to each other.
