Balloon Boy family pitching reality show (Update: Eyes for Lies says it’s legit)

Poor Balloon Boy. First off, that’s what six-year-old Falcon Heene is going to be called for the rest of his life. From his college graduation to his wedding, people will always reference Balloon Boy. But really, that’s not the worst of it. The worst of it is that it seems Balloon Boy probably didn’t do anything wrong. It’s appearing more and more obvious that his scheming parents were behind the whole thing, and the poor kid is clearly wracked with guilt. While being interviewed on CNN, Falcon was asked by his father why he hid in the garage even when rescuers were calling for him. He responded, “You guys said we did this for the show.” His father Richard Heene responded “Oh man.” Since then the Heene family has been on both ABC and NBC to defend themselves, and when Falcon’s statement was brought up, each time the little boy became physically ill and threw up.

Clearly poor Falcon is guilt-ridden, something his scheming parents sure don’t seem to be bothered by. Not only were they on an episode of “Wife Swap” last year, but it turns out they’ve been shopping a reality show “all over town” for the last several months. That sounds like “the show” little Falcon was referring to.

A TLC official tells TMZ the Heene family approached the network “months ago” with a reality show idea, but the network passed.

TMZ has learned the Heene family has been pitching a reality show about the wacky family, as one TV source put it, “all over town.”

We’re told Richard Heene pitched a series to Reality Real, as well as RDF Productions. RDF produces “Wife Swap,” on which the family appeared back in March.

We’re also told the Heene’s have made the rounds at the networks, including TLC. Of course, TLC produced “Jon & Kate Plus 8.”

So is balloon boy the ultimate reality show pitch?

[From TMZ]

It’s sad that we’re so accustomed to ridiculous reality show schemes most people saw this coming. Everything is about reality TV, and it’s invaded our lives in this incredibly awful way. Instead of up-and-coming actors with lots of drive striking out for Hollywood, all these run-of-the-mill people are looking for sensational ways to make themselves rich and famous, and extend their 15 minutes to 15 years.

While you obviously don’t want to accuse someone of doing something as terrible as this for the publicity, given all the information that’s come out it would seem gullible to try to assume the best. These parents sound like whackos, plain and simple. Not only did they try to get attention – and a reality show – by worrying the country that their child was in danger or dead, but now they’re letting him suffer deep physical (and presumably emotional) consequences. If Falcon’s getting sick on NBC, what do you think he’s doing at home at four in the afternoon? Probably still sick. Considering how terribly upset he seems when the cameras are on, imagine what he’s going through the rest of the time. The Heenes have made not only their son sick, but the rest of us as well.

Update by Celebitchy: Eyes for Lies, a tested truth expert like the ones portrayed on the Fox series “Lie to Me,” believes that the family is telling the truth based on their demeanor in the 911 tape, in interviews and in the family home video taken right after the balloon accidentally launched. She says the father’s anger is genuine and that “I am surprised by the anger I see in his father Richard, and the fear I see in Richard’s wife, Mayumi. If they set this balloon off as a hoax, I wouldn’t expect to see this because they would be Emmy Award winning actors.” Eyes also says that Richard’s behavior on CNN does not indicate deception.

My theory on how it went down is that maybe they truly believed that the boy was in the balloon at first, but then they realized soon afterwards that he was safe in the garage. They saw how much publicity they were getting and decided to drag it out until the balloon landed so they could get more air time. That would explain why Falcon said “you told me it was for the show.” It’s possible they’re telling the truth, though, and that their history as fame seekers is counting against them. As much as the facts point to one thing, Eyes is usually dead on in her assessments and if she says this family seems to be telling the truth, maybe they are.

What people were once derided for is now worthy of paid entertainment. Sad.

  3. Rosalee says:

Wow..never saw it coming, proves that people can still surprise me at my advanced age. Levi and I will be planted firmly on the sofa tuned to TLC for this one! *MASSIVE EYEROLL AND GAGGING SOUNDS*

  4. QB says:

I feel so bad for the little kid , his parents probably told him to lie to public and he must have not understood that the camera and the dude in his house was taping it for the whole world to see it.

If Senators and public figures don’t get technology how did they expect for a 6 year old to understand it. I love kids they are so honest.

  5. Firestarter says:

@WHEW! Rosalee, you scared me for a minute when I read your post!

QB- The child has been on tv before and understood cameras and sound men then. He was filmed by crews twice for Wife Swap and his parents are filming videos of them and posting them on You Tube, so I think he is well aware of those things. I do agree, I am sure the parents have told him what to say, because the parents are horrible people.

  6. Blondie says:

This family needs to be held accountable for their actions. Make them reimburse the expenses of the search. AND have child services open an investigation.

  7. Michele says:

Proof positive that all you really need to know is what you learned in kindergarten.

  8. jule says:

mean while a poor baby in Australia gets hit by a train, and survives with just a bump!

  9. gaby says:

I knew it! From the first time I read about this story yesterday and it “turned out he was in the attic the whole time” I knew something was up when I read that his family had been on WifeSwap. It was just a publicity stunt.

  10. Joe says:

The dude called a TV Station before he called 911. Give me a break. Anyone who believes this isn’t a hoax, is an idiot. The Sheriff is a frickin hayseed who is enabling these asswipes.

  11. Kelly says:

Jon&Kate leave a void, and this shit happens…

    Effin great.

  12. original kate says:

    of course they are…

  13. javelin says:

There should be a box on Drivers Licenses acknowledging one has the famewhore gene. Obviously any kind of reality TV exposure would result in a checked box. Maybe a database of “Famewhore Offenders” is in order, too. We can call it “Balloon-Boy’s Law”.

  14. tooey says:

What I keep seeing in my mind is that one “rescuer” guy running like all get out towards that balloon as it was coming down; he really feared for the child he thought was in there. These people made a chump out of him and everyone else that worried for the safety of that kid. I heard the airport in Denver re-routed flights out of the airspace while this was going on. These people should be held financially accountable…

  15. Alison E says:

I admit it, I’m so guillible that when the kid said that, I thought he meant “The balloon was for the tv show and I thought you would be mad at me for wrecking it.”

Maybe after what Eyes said that is really what he meant?

    SO CONFUSED.

  16. buckley says:

I guess call me naive, but I don’t believe it was a hoax.
I refuse to believe someone would actually do that.
The second scenario though, seems plausible. That they milked it after they knew boy was safe.
    Which is also awful.

  17. Lem says:

‘eyes for lies’ also thinks “Kate’s [Gosslin] expressions, emotions and behavior are very consistent with honesty. ”
Re: I can’t pay my bills interview.

I think the botox has fooled ‘eyes’. Kate is most certainly not truth telling.

  18. Lindsay says:

Poor kids. They are putting them through unnecessary pain for their own desperate attempt for fame. This seems like emotional abuse to me hopefully they will look into that as well. I’m feel so sad for Falcon (did Sarah Palin help with the names?) Hopeful the boys statement will encourage a better fraud investigation, along with the public pressure from the high profile case.

Joe I totally agree, unfortunately the sheriff seems to be one of those idiots.

Today Larimer County Sheriff, Jim Alderden said “we believe at this time that it was a real event. Certainly people are free to speculate,” He added that if the episode “turns out to be a hoax, we will seek restitution by whatever means we have available.”

The sheriff acknowledged that Falcon’s comments had clearly “raised everybody’s level of skepticism, but that investigators had no reason to believe the balloon odyssey was a hoax.

The sheriff said they’ll interview the family again on Saturday to ask about the boy’s comments.

“It seems much more likely that the boy was frightened because he saw that he was responsible for this device becoming untethered,” Alderden said.

The sheriff said that because of the “magnitude” of the event, his office contacted social workers, but asked them not to talk to the Heenes until they’ve talked to authorities again. Maj. Justin Smith of the sheriff’s office said social workers were asked to get involved because of concerns raised about the family’s storm chasing work. He said authorities want to make sure the children are in a healthy environment. (At least he is planning to get social services involved)

If it was determined the ordeal was a hoax, the parents could be charged with making a false report to authorities, a low-level misdemeanor, Alderden said. (That doesn’t seem like enough to me.)

Wonder if is Jon is kicking him self for not coming up with this stunt first. Did you see In Touch’s new cover? On the side bar he is photographer pulling Hannah’s hair to stop her? I am not for sure it is Hannah but it was on of the younger ones but that is what it seemed like while I was flipping through it in line.

  19. Kathie says:

I think we should suspect anyone who names their kid Falcon..really? He is a sweet looking kid, it’s a shame he is stuck with a set of douchey parents.

  20. Lindsay says:

Funny story, little bit off topic, but to lighten it up a little my local paper paper hear wrote a side story of other helium-powered adventures an misadventures:

    – In 1982 “Lawn Chair Larry” tied 45 helium weather baloons to his lawnchair. He expect to only go thirty feet in the air but went to 11,000 feet. He shot the balloons one by one with a pellet gun. He some how survived.

    – In 2007 Ken Couch tied 105 large helium party balloons to his lawn chair at his home in Oregon and sailed almost 200 miles into Idaho.

    – Last year a Roman Catholic priest Adelir Antonio de Capri from Brazil tried to break a flight record using hundreds of helium balloons he was blown to the ocean. His body was found two months later.

  21. JaundiceMachine says:

My tax dollars helped pay for their publicity stunt. The least they can do is foot the bill.

(I saw part of an episode of “Wife Swap” after hearing about this whole fiasco. It’s not like that family is at all concerned with higher education. Drain the brat’s college fund and have the parents get real jobs.)

I’d be curious to know if they’ve purchased S&R insurance in this past year. Pretty damning evidence if they did. . .

  22. moo says:

The simple fact these “parents” were on Wife Swap not only once but TWICE, shows me they are not competent parents. I personally don’t believe caring, loving parents would ever, EVER put their child(ren) through that kind of mental and sometimes physical torture that is called “Wife Swap”. Disgusting show!! So called writers should be ashamed!

  23. QB says:

Firestarter , Prince Charles has been around cameras and microphones his whole life and that has not stop him from forgetting that that Huge hairy thing that a man is holding over your head while you are giving a press conference is a microphone and that the reported can hear you when you call them idiots. Is not hard to forget about those things look at all the politicians that sometimes forget the mike is on and they keek talking.

  24. QB says:

I have a question? How the hell this people believed that the kid was in the balloon , when the ballon does not have a basket attach to it.

Now I know that when an emergency happen I need to call the tv station first and then 911.

  25. fizXgirl314 says:

Why is there any doubt as to what went on? why does “eyes for lies” even have to be called in? The little boy obviously admitted “it was for the show.” We can safely take his word for it on this one….

  26. QB says:

and the parents deliberately let the ballon loose that was infront of them.

  27. Westender says:

Why am I not surprised? This reality show trend is getting out of control

  28. GatsbyGal says:

I hope the parents are berated and chastised for their little “stunt”, NOT rewarded for it by actually getting a show. And poor, poor Falcon. He must be so consumed with guilt. But it’s not his fault, his parents are the ones who should feel guilty, and it’s like he’s taken on all the guilt they’re failing to express.

  29. LOL says:

The family should be required to pay back every cent expended on their carefully-crafted wild goose chase. There was nowhere on the balloon for the kid to hide out in, and they should/would have looked for him in his attic ‘pouting place’ to make sure before involving the FAA in their hijinx.
I remember them from Wife Swap, the dad’s an a$$hole on the order of Michael Lohan.
STOP giving them airtime, idiot media! Jeez!

  30. thepickle says:

Call me crazy but I think that little kid holds all the cards. No one call roll the eyes like that kid can.

  31. thepickle says:

PS: “a real job” ?…who wants one of those? And tax-payer dollars? pffffft. that mylar baloon floating across cnn for HOURS!! highest paid anchors licking it up- generated so much income/advertising dollars! who of you loggin in here can generate even a cent from your media interaction? CNN was ALL OVER IT! as were we. what great entertainment. This is like 100 steps up from wife swap. go Falcon. save daddy.

  32. jane says:

QB, my thoughts exactly when I first saw pictures of the balloon. Then to hear the kid was in the garage the whole time and then more ridiculous stories. Pathetic.

  33. JaundiceMachine says:

Haven’t found any google hits for “Heene” and “CORSAR ” (Colorado search and rescue insurance), but I’d be curious to see if it turns up in a few days. . .

I’d put money on it that those fucktards bought helicopter insurance sometime this year to cover their asses for their publicity stunt.

Horrible, ugly people. I hope child services pays them a visit.

  34. niay says:

What a disgusting family. I feel so sorry for those kids to have parents with no moral value.

  35. NotAFan says:

This guy fancies himself a “science detective,” a storm chaser, and a weather entusiast. He is not college educated, yet he’s currently trying to prove that tornadoes have “magnetic properties.” Actually, his first call was to the FAA and when they told him to hang up and call 911, he said why? Like the FAA shows up pre-accident!! The guy is an idiot, so is his wife and she plays a submissive role to the husband. The boys are allowed to do whatever they want. Did you see their behavior in front of the cameras? I wouldn’t allow my child in front of news cameras, nor would I allow news people to question them in this situation. Falcon (Named for the jet?? or the bird?? Weird!) did nothing wrong…he didn’t untie the balloon (the mother was in charge of tying it down), he didn’t fill it with helium, and he hid after being yelled at?? Did he think he would be blamed?? I don’t think he’d be hiding if the whole thing was a set-up!! I do think that we’ve ONLY BEGUN to pay for these kids!!

  36. NotAFan says:

PS..Maybe I’m not the smartest, but I don’t think this guy or his wife are smart enough to pull this off without the Sheriff’s Dept smelling a rat. It’s difficult to be genuinely freaked out for four hours. I do think the boys are CLEVER enough to lie. And you guys that think the boys are being truthful must not have kids…I have a wonderful grown son who lied about the dumbest stuff from about two and into his teenage years. Kids LIE if they think they are covering their butt!!!

  37. Jazz says:

I don’t know, I saw this guy during one interview, he was all “um” and “ah” and couldn’t even look at the camera.

  38. Jag says:

The father’s anger may have been because he’s always angry. Apparently, during one of the Wife Swaps, he was yelling and throwing things at/near the swapped wife, and one of the producers stepped in to stop it. The fear on the mother’s face could be because the father is angry, as is typical in abusive households. Eyes for Lies is usually correct, but I have to think that their reality pitch had something to do with it, especially since the poor little boy keeps getting ill when asked about it. I read that the deal he had made for the show fell through after all of this bad publicity. I certainly hope that’s true.

  39. Firestarter says:

Nice that this family is getting all this media attention and will probably profit from this financially, when a family in Colorado, who depended on their wheat crop for moeny, will be without that this year, as the wheat field where the balloon sans child landed was destroyed by the balloon and all of the EMS workers flying on the property to save the kids life.

This family will no doubt make money, while an innocent family will suffer economic reprocussions due to these people and their b.s. Shameful!

  40. Popcorny says:

Hoax or no hoax, this family needs professional services/intervention for the sake of those kids.
They are just all kinds of wrong.

  41. lin234 says:

If you continue to watch the interview after the boy ralphed, the interviewer keeps pressing the father to explain what the boy meant by what he said. All the sudden the father can’t hear what is being said by the interviewer. He pretends to not hear the question or that something is wrong with the mike and completely dodges the question and goes on the defensive. Such a bad liar.

In another interview, (forgot which one) there were interviewers asking the parents about the rap video they made of the kids. They asked the parents why they allowed such foul language to be used (pu—,f—,fag—,…) and in particular the parents were asked why the word faggot was used. The parents first deny it then the wife goes “F was for Falcon.” Then the husband starts agreeing. The interviewers were not fooled and said well it certainly didn’t sound like falcon. Anyways, it just sounds like the parents don’t take responsibility for their actions. How can you expect their kids to? I certainly hope this is the end about them.

  42. AA says:

What REALLY creeped me out is his body language and facial expressions towards Falcon. In the video where Falcon is sick in front of the cameras, the father doesn’t even acknowledge the situation, he doesn’t stop to ask his son if he is ok or anything! He just seems a bit annoyed and pulls away from his son. I mean, even if you are used to kids being sick and you are an experienced enough parent not to freak out over things like that, still, it would be normal I would think to pause and ask teh child “are you alright?”. Most adults would put a comforting hand on the child’s back, or make a similar movement and he didn’t do anything – just went on with the interview, looking irritable about it!

There was another video on CNN, where he not only looks annoyed when the child says that they did it for the show, but he physically keeps pulling away from his son in an annoyed manner. It makes me worry about the kids…

  43. Shay says:

I saw it coming..who goes on Wife Swap twice.

  44. teehee says:

I can tell the fther is inincere when he says he was sorry foryellign at him, and then pretends to get teary and pretends to hug and kiss the boy. Putting. On. A. Damned. Show. Regardless of what happened or why or what any motives might have been, that guy has control and emotional abuse issues, and is covering it up.
But his family gives it all away.

  45. cindy says:

Kid is scared. They tore into him and now its coming out physically.

  46. Judy says:

Yes, that bully of a father either verbally beat him down or beat him up…poor little kid.

  47. Blanca says:

The kid could not sit still for more than a minute on Larry King! MUCH LESS ON HIS OWN IN THE ATTIC FOR THREE HOURS!

  48. Blanca says:

Was the box the dad offered to the media the same one the kid used to hide in or the one used for vomiting?

    Clearly,issues.

  49. Firestarter says:

Shocker, shocker. Charges are being filed against one or both of the parents!~

  50. Kaboom says:

Time to call in child protection services?

  51. gillie says:

his parents met in acting school.
they called the FAA and a news station BEFORE calling 911.
    all screams fraud to me.

  52. Judy says:

Child protection services is aware of this. The entire family was in on it, but only Richard and his wife will be charged. Feds are not yet involved, but, hopefully, will be soon. Go to Gawker.com and see a video (scroll way down) of Richard stating that Hillary Clinton is an Alien. He is INSANE.

  53. QB says:

It was confirmed is a hoax ,the Sheriff had a press conference The Sheriff say :”It has been determined this was a hoax, a publicity stunt to market a reality show”

“Contributing to the delinquency of a minor, attempting to influence a public official” are among the charges that could add up to a Class 4 Felony.

  54. jule says:

thank god, no reality tv show….i hope.

  55. Rosanna says:

They should ask a different “trusted expert” LOL

  56. lucy2 says:

Glad they are being prosecuted. Not only did they lie and teach their kids to lie as well, but they tied up a lot of valuable resources with all the rescue workers, police, EMTs, etc. It’s not only stupid and wrong but dangerous. All of those people could have been out helping real people with real problems, but instead were sent on a wild goose chase.
I heard the Denver airport was actually shut down completely for a bit there. If that alone doesn’t result in some federal offenses, I don’t know what would.

  57. sarah says:

So Eyes for Lies doesn’t know everything huh? People who think they can judge whether a person they don’t know is telling a lie or the truth are on the same level as “psychics”

  58. TwinkleToes says:

Easy there, Sarah. I don’t think ‘eyes for lies’ has actually worked in gov’t cases like a woman who did go on CNN and dissected the outing video. The father’s deep breath, the mom rubbing her leg. She makes some points. Listen to the 911 by the Mendendez brothers and that is even more convincing.

  59. TwinkleToes says:

Can I just say that I think Richard is ill and suffers from manic psychosis ( a stage in Bipolar disorder) and really just needs medicine and maybe a hospital stay? Not jail time because he could possibly be homicidal/suicidal. His wife is a sheep, a follower and an enabler. Now she could stand a few weeks in jail to send a message to these women who allow their children to get abused and used. This is the best thing to happen to that family as they were going unchecked. They can sell their story of recovery later. It’s a win-win.

  60. QB says:

He needs to go to jail because he will go crazy and could hurt someone or Falcon to be exact . He probably kick his ass for telling the true.

  61. danette says:

Do you remember the tv show “Wife Swap”??? You see that guy threw a drink at the woman in the show?? It is very clearly that he is abusing her!! I am sure the boys and his wife are afraid of him.. Have you heard of domestic violence?? Arrest him!!!!

  62. jalyn says:

    poor boy

  63. *I’d have to check with you here. Which is not something I usually do! I enjoy reading a post that will make people think. Also, thanks for allowing me to comment!
