Travolta family makes first red carpet appearance after son’s passing

The Travolta family came out for the premiere of their new Disney movie, Old Dogs, in LA last night. The film is a rag tag buddy comedy starring Travolta, Robin Williams, and Seth Green. John Travolta’s daughter, Ella Bleu, 9, makes her movie debut in the film, and mom Kelly Preston also appears. This marks the Travoltas first red carpet appearance since the tragic loss of their 16 year-old son, Jett, to a head injury he suffered during a seizure in January.

John said during a press conference for the film that his family is coping with Jett’s death with daily religious counseling sessions through their church, Scientology. Scientology was just convicted of fraud in France. The cult has been under fire for their aggressive tactics with detractors along with their deceptive recruitment practices. It is thought that Travolta may be under pressure to publicly declare his support for Scientology, but his remarks could also be genuine. A lot of people turn to religion during tough times:

John Travolta stepped on his first red carpet since the death of son Jett to promote his new film, Old Dogs, in which his 9-year-old daughter, Ella Bleu, makes her screen debut.

Travolta was joined at the Hollywood premiere Monday night by some of Tinseltown’s top names, including Robin Williams, Tom Hanks and Seth Green.

“John just makes you feel wonderful, there’s a thing about him that you see him and you start to go ‘Wow’, it’s a warmth,” Williams said of his Old Dogs co-star. “I’ve kind of joked that he’s a human panda, you see him and you go, ‘Ahhhh’ and he’s very sweet that way, there’s a kindness that I think radiates from him.”

Travolta broke his silence Monday, as the A-lister said family, friends, religion and therapy have been filling his days, in his first interview since the tragic death.

“We’ve been working very hard every day as a family to heal,” the Pulp Fiction star told USA Today. “We have our own way of doing it, and it has been helping; You need your friends a lot in times like that.”

Jett died at the age of 16 on Jan. 2 from a seizure at the family’s vacation home on Grand Bahama island. The month-long trial of an ambulance driver and a former Bahamian senator accused of attempting to extort $25 million from actor was declared a last month.

Ella looks so sweet and it’s nice to see this family out together. You can tell that they’re close knit and have a lot of love for each other.

I’m kind of disappointed that Travolta is talking up Scientology, but he didn’t say much about it except that counseling was helping him. To each their own, I guess, and I can’t fault the guy for turning to his religion in a terrible time. When it comes to such a destructive and criminal organization you wish that celebrities would have the sense to break ties, though.

On a lighter note, what is going on with Kelly Preston’s poofy hair? She looks gorgeous and around 10 years younger than her age, 47, but her hair is messy looking and not that cute. At least her outfit isn’t terrible. The dress is kind of plain and sack-like, but she’s worn worse. Remember what she wore to the 2007 Oscars?

Here’s the trailer for Old Dogs. It looks goofy but I laughed a few times.

Well, I say that whatever works for them, good. If that is Scientology, then so be it. They have to cope with a huge loss and if their brand of religion helps them, that is all that matters.

  2. Lisa says:

If he failed to obtain proper medical treatment for his son, because Scientology does not recognize autism, and his son died because he never recieved proper medical treatment, seeking counseling from organization responsible for his son’s death, is very ironic.

  3. lilred says:

As near as I know John has been into scientology for quite some time.

Isn’t he the one who got Kirsty Ally into it?

  4. Tess says:

Seems like celeb Scientologists like Travolta and Cruise are making quite an effort to use cute kid and family imagery to offset the nasty press their “religion” has been getting recently.

  5. princess pea says:

Yeah, as much as I like to snark on a scary cult, I’ll stand back when we’re talking about someone’s immense grief.

Ella’s got a pretty face; you can really see BOTH of her parents in her.

    @ Lisa – If.

  6. sickofit says:

i dont get the feeling that they love eachother very much.

  7. Jag says:

In that header pic, Kelly looks crazed, Ella looks uncomfortable, and John looks like he’s holding on to Ella so she doesn’t run away. Look how they’re holding onto her so tightly… just doesn’t look “right.”

  8. Firestarter says:

Jeez, he is simply leaning in to be photographed with his daughter, and obviously Ella and her mom were holding hands and stopped walking the carpet for the picture. It hardly looks weird the way they are in the photo. They look like a happy family.

No need to dissect every single aspect of a picture. This is their first public family outing since Jett’s death. Give the people a break.

  9. Green Is Good says:

The cult this nut John and his psycho wife belong to think Autism is due to a defect in that person’s character.

    “Kawasaki Syndrome” my ass, Kelly.

  10. Neelyo says:

    John looks very ‘refreshed’.

  11. viper says:

pathetic man who allowed his son to suffer. Iused to pray his son would be a wake up call to him, he got a call- and hung up. Granted I was hoping his son would still be alive though.

  12. hairball says:

Do any celebrity parents actually stress the value of education???? Every kid becomes an ‘actor’. These kids are becoming lost and pathetic souls with no purpose in life. Sad. Pathetic.

  13. Tia C says:

Good to see them out and about, and smiling. I hate to say anything negative about them because of their loss, but I can’t help but notice that Ella looks like she’s gained quite a bit of weight. I hope they give her more than Scientology for therapy. Looks like someone might be stuffing their feelings with food…

  14. cprincess says:

Ive heard all kinds of weird stories about John Travolta- him propositioning men in showers at gym etc…
Kelly Preston looks great and if shes had any work it doesnt look like it-I disagree that she looks 10 years younger-she looks like a beautiful natural woman in her 40s and there is NOTHING wrong with that!
Her darkened down hair I also love(theres way too many overprocessed blonds in Hollywood) and the style is fabulous.

  15. nanster says:

@Tia C – just what I was thinking. Ella does have beautiful hair though.
I am glad that the family is finding solace in something – I just wish it wasn’t Scientology.

  16. filthycute says:

Yeah, keep talking about the religion that helped you IGNORE your son’s plight until he died, John. Idiot!

  17. TwinkleToes says:

Yeah, well rumor in Cali is he used a relative’s sperm so he wouldn’t have a second autistic kid. This news from an insider who has had 2 autistic kids herself. Just a rumor.

  18. Ursula says:

To each their own, whatever helps them getting over their grief.Losing a child is very hard, and for those of you without any compassion just because you don’t agree with their beliefs, I feel sorry for you. You are no better than the cult that you despise.

  19. Codzilla says:

    Wow, Ella is absolutely gorgeous.
