Dita Von Teese on why she left L.A., and the ‘art’ of striptease

Dita Von Teese has been ramping up her career with a European burlesque tour, a line of retro lingerie and a new photography flipbook entitled “Dita: Striptease.” But the burlesque performer and fetish model says that she may not be returning to Los Angeles any time soon, thanks to paparazzi and a more receptive audience overseas.

America may have just lost burlesque superstar Dita Von Teese to Paris. The 37-year-old Michigan-born performer (née Heather Sweet) finished a run at Paris’ Crazy Horse and has purchased an apartment there (it’s also the home of boyfriend Count Louis Marie de Castelbajac). LA’s “mini skirts and UGG boots” style and permanent sunshine are part of what drove Von Teese to take flight, so she can “fall back in love with LA.”

She says she believes Europe gets her and her art in a way that some in her native country don’t. “Some people really think that all I do is wear red lipstick and dress in vintage clothes and cruise around,” said Von Teese while in Beijing, where she recently performed for a GQ China event. “In France and the U.K., they can show what I do on TV. The Jay Lenos of Europe all have me on. In America they’re obsessed with pop stars and maybe they’re a little bit afraid of having me on there because they think what I’m talking about and what I’m doing is too risqué.”

Her other gripe is that too much modern burlesque doesn’t pay tribute to its predecessors. “You see a lot of burlesque-themed nightclubs opening, where there are girls dancing with boas, then the curtains close and that’s it. Burlesque was about striptease, and especially in America, a lot of the mainstream burlesque acts are taking all of the important elements about the history of burlesque out,” Von Teese laments. “I’ve made it my personal mission to stay true to what burlesque was in the ’30s and ’40s and keep striptease in. Maybe that makes me a little bit dangerous for an American audience but it’s more important to me that I stay true to the big stars of burlesque, like Gypsy Rose Lee, Lily St. Cyr, and Sally Rand, the women who took their clothes off in front of an audience.”

Recently, she had a run-in with a photographer at an airport who reportedly called her a “bitch” to get a photo op. “When that was happening to me, I realized this is how they get Kanye West or Sean Penn or somebody beating someone down and just snapping. I thought, ‘This is a test for me, I have to maintain my elegance because all they’re gonna see is the pictures of me being upset.’” (The photographer has since “nicely and kindly and wholeheartedly” apologized, in her words.) “I do a lot of performances and if something breaks or technically goes wrong, what am I gonna do, get mad and storm off? It’s about how you deal with the crisis. People respect you more for dealing with things in an elegant manner instead of having a fit.”

[From The Daily Beast]

Can you imagine Jay Leno having Dita perform on his new 10 o’clock show? It would never happen. I guess you have to go where the work is, regardless of your profession, and burlesque is no exception. I know there are a lot of people who think “burlesque” is just a fancy word for “stripper,” and that’s partially true. But if you visit the average strip club and then compare that to the work of the dancers Dita named in the article, there is a big difference. The end result is pretty much the same, though: naked lady!

The interview also says that Dita is planning to put out another book on beauty and style tips for women who “dare to be different.” I will be interested in that one! I did pick up her flipbook and I must say, it’s beautifully photographed. It looks like it was a lot of fun to do.

She just never made it big because even with all the makeup, she’s pretty plain looking. Even her lesbian porn never really took off. There’s nothing special about her face.

  2. Firestarter says:

Sorry, but Burlesque is not rocket science. There is nothing to get. Eoropeans are as obssessed with celebrity as the rest of the world, so she needn’t act like we are all so uncultured.

I get her appeal in Europe and her desire to live in Paris. No argument that it is sophisticated and full of culture, but please do not act like Americans cannot grasp the concept of Burlesque. People here are just maybe not interested in it. Plain and simple.

I think it’s cool but I also love the 30’s and 40’s. Not everybody is.

  3. Megan says:

At first I couldn’t get past the marilyn manson thing, but now I like her. I like her style, I, too, think women were much classier and elegant back in the day. We could definitely use more of that these days!

  4. anna says:

“…It’s about how you deal with the crisis. People respect you more for dealing with things in an elegant manner instead of having a fit.”

Good words, esp. in light of the sweet 16 and bridezilla behavior we accept as norm and continue tolerating these days….

  5. gg says:

I can’t get past how she always looks like she’s got upper dentures. Maybe it’s just an overbite.

  6. katie says:

Hey Twinkletoes- is there anything special about Jenna Jamison’s face? (except that it’s always between some girl’s legs?)

  7. Meimei says:

I’m pretty sure she can get more airtime in many parts of Europe than in the US. I mean, some time ago I was surprised that there are two versions of SATC shown – we got the “real deal” and I can’t remember any big moral outrage. After 9 pm boobs are OK.

  8. Goddess711 says:

Burlesque is an art form; today’s ripper clubs are just plain out smutty, like the guys who go there. Quick and Easy. Burlesque, on the other hand, is about fantasy, anticipation and the reward at the end. The difference is in the mentality. It’s what women do on a daily basis. Quick and Easy get you a $5 bill in your gstring after the lapdance because you played it like a ho’bag because low self esteem thinks that’s how you get a guy. Burlesque nets you a committment because you played it like an enticing lady because you know who you are and what you’re worth. Not a lot of women can pull it off these days and it’s what guys LOVE. Somebody mentioned on here that Dita VonT. is “plain”; not in the way she presents herself and that’s the key. She exudes sexy and self confidence. She’s right, McAmerica doesn’t get her; Europe does. McAmericans act shocked and repressed – what a crock!
VonT. is an “artiste” in the old fashioned way that caught mens’ attention in the good old days. Betcha they knew how to keep those guys’ interest too. We need to relearn all that.
That’s today’s lesson in reality. Hope you enjoyed it, LOL!

  9. princess pea says:

@ Goddess – As long as there’s been burlesque, there’s been rippers too. They’re different, but not that different.

I don’t like Dita much, never really have. I don’t get her appeal, and I’m even a burlesque fan. I think her shows are probably fabulous, but the construction of her celebrity status is kind of silly to me.

  10. Goddess711 says:

    @ P.P. – It’s a difference in “class” – sounds like you wouldn’t get it.

  11. queenie says:

I don’t care much for her or her work…she might be more believable if she were out of “costume” once in awhile. As far as Americans “not getting it” or being too “low brow”…well I doubt it. VonT is going to Europe because of the bottom line and nothing else. Also helps to have a rich BF who is more than likely covering most of her expenses. Business as usual. When they break up she will end up back here and give some story about how nice it is to rediscover all of LA’s charms….

  12. TaylorB says:

“People respect you more for dealing with things in an elegant manner instead of having a fit.”

I couldn’t agree more, I wish Lohan and her ilk would pay attention to this bit of wisdom.

  13. Jillian says:

I love Dita. She’s the epitome of class and elegance in my book.

  14. Peach says:

Hi from the actual city of Paris.
Look here’s the actual deal on Dita.
We see boobs everywhere here. Really. They arn’t new, artistic, avant garde or shocking. Beautiful? Yes.Usually. But that’s it.

We’ve also had burlesque forever. So really what Dita is doing here is nothing new. She’s fairly good (I’ve seen her perform). I’ve seen better, but I wasn’t dissapionted with her.

But the idea that this is so ‘artistic’ and ‘McAmerica’ doesnt get it is asinine. There is plenty of trash in the City of Lights that doesn’t get it. There are plenty of people who think it’s the same as stripping.

The only real dicernable difference I can see here ist hat when the boobs come out, we treat it as an everyday event (because, lets face it, it kind of is). Oh also, we pay more attention to costuming and form. Hey, fashion and ballet are our passions. So we pay attention to that stuff.

That said, I’ve met plenty of Americans that do as well. So I’m a little put off by the generalizations here. McAmerica exists just as the Brittany does. The 17th and the 93rd exist within the same city. Oh and if you don’t understand that reference, you have no business discussing French culture (Godess). Merci.

  15. katyusha says:

    @ Katie

I agree with with Twinkle Toes. I don’t think there’s anything exceptional about Dita’s face.

In my opinion, before Jenna Jameson got the work done on her face (that I think now makes her look older), she was really beautiful.

  16. Rachel says:

I think this is the translation
Please tell me if it’s right

17th arrondissment – culture, considered classy

93rd arrondissement – more middle -class to “redneck” (based on a bombing of a synagogue there) – And I’m Virginian

This is not to be cute, just trying to get the subtext, as the closest I’ve been to France is DK’s travel books

  17. bo says:

Innocent question… what inspires a person to put an apostrophe in ho’bag?

  18. Emily says:

bo: it’s the internet, no one can spell or use grammar correctly.

  19. gg says:

“She’s the epitome of class and elegance in my book”

Are you sure you want to say that? At the end of the day, the woman takes her clothes off for men to ogle. How is that the epitome?

    Audrey Hepburn she is not.

  20. TwinkleToes says:

Oh Goddess, stuff it. Firestart sums it up perfectly. Stop bashing Americans with McAmericans. Do you call Canadians McCanadians? Burlesque isn’t rocket science but Dita is a makeup job. She’s no Liz Taylor, Vivienne Leigh or dare I say, Megan Fox. If she had that beauty, she’d be big here. Americans have a high standard of beauty. Sue us. The fact that she married that loser Marilyn Manson does not help her cause here in The States. Yeah, she is plain. Anyone who wears all of that glamorous makeup and still isn’t a classic beauty is a dime a dozen.

  21. Peach says:

    @Rachel:
    Ding, Ding, Ding!.
Except the 93rd is more like the ghetto. It’s where we had the riots a few years ago and it’s where all the new immagrents settle. It’s not really like rednecks, but it’s where the projects are.

  22. Goddess711 says:

    McTwinkleToes,
You and Firestarter should get a room, sounds like.
Maybe you’re right – as brainless goes, you pretty much set the standard with your comments.
McAmericans applies to the two countries; we’re sorely behind in a lot of things, tolerance and respect for other people’s opinions is one as you’ve proven.
    Stuff that, Twink!

  23. Kaye says:

When I see her I always think that if she doesn’t find a way to soften her look, in about 10 years she’s going to look straight up crazy. She’s a plastic surgery hatchet job waiting to happen.

  24. Yae says:

    Megan – Goddess

I have to agree. Women are so much more powerful when their sexuality has the beauty of CONTROL.

My mother used to say that “Men only cheat because women allow them. Men can’t cheat if there is NOONE who will cheat with them” And quite frankly, most men don’t have control. Women need to recommit to finding that inner power.

Dita really embraces that in her current role. I adore her.

I suppose some prefer Girls Gone Wild as an example of female sexuality. That mentality just gets guys what they want for NOTHING. In addition, it causes marriages to break up and men to have a buffet of -ss that keeps our children unsupported.

And it’s exactly what hollywood peddles to keep women stupid and easy, families broken and our thirst for their movie fantasies more profitable because we are all broke and only have a BOX to look at everyday.

Keep winking and enjoying life Dita.

    PS I’m in the “States”.

  25. gossip_ho says:

guys/gals stop all the argument…i’m not siding with anyone but everyone here is entitled to their own opinion

  26. NicoleAM says:

People use the word “art” a little too freely in my opinion. I like her and I think she carries herself well, but why is female sexuality always about getting naked?

  27. Amy says:

haha goddess, just because someone doesnt share your opinion their an idiot? lol ok, you go back to your posh stripping. in fact anyone who knows what burlesque actually means back in the day of vaude de ville it was “titulating” comedy-not always resulting in nudity. seem dita has taken part of it and changed it a bit. and indeed NicoleAM, you’v hit that on the head.

  28. pixiegirl says:

I think you’d find that Dita would be the first to admit she is not a great beauty. But for me, she does have a nice feminine quality that every woman can aspire to. True, she is not the most beautiful woman in the world, but so what? She has her own thing and I for one think it works for her. She comes across as gracious and even intelligent – qualities I find are sorely lacking in many, if not most, hollywood sirens these days.

  29. Goddess711 says:

    People, people, people.
Before you go bashing and ranting, could you please pick up a grammar book and get your There, Their, They’re going? It really takes away from your comments when y’look illiterate. You’re adding a whole new aspect to “undereducated Americans”.
Yes, this means you garbled name #27.

  30. gabriel says:

don’t blame it on the paparazzi…

just say you’d rather live in Europe with your millionaire prince boyfriend…

than in the USA in your ridiculous ranch home in a crappy neighborhood right under Sunset Blvd

enjoy Europe! We’ll cya there also!
