Kate Hudson’s voice is surprisingly strong in ‘Nine’

This is the new trailer for Nine, the musical starring Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Daniel Day-Lewis and Kate Hudson, amongst others. The whole thing is set to Kate Hudson singing “Cinema Italiano”. That’s really her voice. And that’s really her dancing, too. While I don’t think Kate Hudson should give up her film career for a music career, I’m finding Kate’s voice a lot stronger than I expected. And she seems like a natural dancer, so that’s good too. Considering this is the second trailer released (the first was overlaid with Fergie’s rendition of “Be Italian”), some are saying Kate Hudson will be pushed (by the studio) come awards time. Entertainment Weekly even wrote a piece asking “Is anyone rooting for a Kate Hudson comeback?”

The new trailer for Nine is all Kate Hudson most of the time. Yes, we get shots of Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, and Fergie’s breasts, but it’s Hudson’s “Cinema Italiano” production number that’s the focus.

Which makes me wonder if Hudson herself is supposed to be a draw, or if the filmmakers just wanted us to see a sparkly set and costume and her song was an eye-catcher? I’m going with the latter.

Hudson doesn’t have the best track record and needs Nine to get her back on track. At the very least, it gives her something worthwhile to talk about when she tapes her Inside the Actors Studio this week in New York. Almost Famous and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days weren’t going to fill an hour.

Kate and some of the stars of Nine were on Oprah on Wednesday to promote the film. I’m totally bummed that I missed Daniel Day-Lewis’s interview, because that man makes me warm… in the pants. I did see Marion Cotillard – who is not the best interview, at all. She’s very earnest and sweet, but she doesn’t say anything about anything. However, Marion made Kate seem like a genius. Kate kept smacking her lips, giggling and saying “ye-ah” and “uh…like…uh”. Oprah was only able to ring one piece of interesting information out of Kate, and I swear it took five minutes to get this: Kate met Alex Rodriguez “years ago”. Fascinating! Meanwhile, In Touch is reporting that A-Rod finally bought Kate a ring… but not that kind of ring:

Baseball star ALEX RODRIGUEZ has reportedly splashed out on a $40,000 ring for girlfriend KATE HUDSON to thank her for cheering him on through the World Series.

Rodriguez’s New York Yankees triumphed in the series against the Philadelphia Phillies – and Hudson was at the games to show her support.

She often showed up with her mother Goldie Hawn’s actor lover Kurt Russell.

And A-Rod has shown his gratitude by buying his girl a new Louis Vuitton white-gold ring set with pink sapphires and diamonds.

An insider tells In Touch magazine, “He has a World Series ring, and now she does, too. It’s a beautiful piece of jewellery and very unusual… He clearly knows her style and has great taste… She thought it was such a romantic gesture.”

A louis Vuitton pink sapphire and diamond ring is absolutely nothing to scoff at. I’d do A-Rod for a great ring, too. But, alas, I think Kate really loves him. And she probably wants an engagement ring, not a “thank you” ring.

Now, since I’m a little tired of talking about Kate, I bring you this gem from the Nine set: Sophia Loren, immortal goddess, was actually intimated by one of her fellow actors on the set. Considering Sophia could eat most of these young girls in her sleep, this one is pleasantly surprising. Sophia told the British papers: “Daniel Day-Lewis is incredible. He is hypnotic, magical, beautiful and brilliant; but he is also very scary. Every time I did a scene with him he was so deep and so real that it was almost intimidating.” Sophia plays his mother. God, I can’t wait for this movie.

  1. Firestarter says:

Kate’s voice is strong with the help of auto-tune and editing.

I don’t know why the big push for a Kate Hudson comeback, because other than Almost Famous, she never was really “here”, was she?

The cast is good, except the one I am least interesting in Hudson. Don’t know why Hollywood loves her so much, because she is a terrible actress and not a great beauty.

  2. Neelyo says:

The voice sounds electronically enhanced and the fringe on the costume and camera work seem to be doing most of the dancing. Rob Marshall used a lot of editing to make non-dancer Renee Zellweger look decent and he’ll probably do the same with this film. I’m excited about the movie, but not Hudson.

  3. Jazz says:

I think Hollywood loves her so much because she is Goldie Hawn’s daughter.

  4. Ana says:

Now I have to watch the movie!
Nicole Kidman looked soooo beautiful. I still can’t believe I just said that.

  5. CandyKay says:

That looks like an outtake from “Chicago.” Rob Marshall apparently has one trick, and he’s doing it again.

  6. Sunnyjyl says:

I recall her mom started out as a dancer/dance teacher, and her dad as a singer. So, she began as an actress… I love her confidence. Sure, this seems like a role better suited to her mom but, Kate sells it.

I love Kate Hudson! She is so cute and I love her energy.I love Goldie, too. But Kate is a good actress and she has the ‘it’ quality.I cant beleive more people dont like her.Maybe it’s the A-rod thing…it is kinda annoying.

  8. justme says:

I love Kate Hudson! That is my girl! Unfortunately, I will not go to see this movie. I love her in romantic comedies.

  9. happymom says:

I can’t wait to see this movie. I think Kate Hudson is very cute, and the other ladies in the film are great. I loved “Chicago”. That said, what a DUMB song-and there’s no range to it-anyone with a half way decent voice and the magic of editing/production could make it sound okay.

  10. Tia C says:

I love Kate Hudson, too. To me she is like a “girl next door” type – not so good looking or smart as to be intimidating, just friendly and accessible. What’s not to like? She has never claimed to be a Shakespearean actor or anything. She does light entertainment. Having said that, I have absolutely ZERO interest in this particular film, as I can’t STAND musicals. I’ll wait til she comes out with another rom com!

  11. birdie says:

    I don’t like her shape.

  12. wow says:

I’m not rooting for Kate Hudson in anything. I use to enjoy some of her movies but now I find her annoying.

I’m excited to see this movie though because the cast on a whole is an interesting mix.

  13. Alarmjaguar says:

Love me some musicals. I can’t wait!

  14. mom22 says:

She really can sing, I don’t know why people would say its autotune. Her whole family on both sides are singers, performers, and musicians. Why wouldn’t she be able to sing when its in the genes? She’s much better than lots of bestselling artists today. People who hate musicals should make an exception for this one and I think they wont be disappointed.

  15. Ally says:

The dance numbers (and the way they’re filmed) look cheesy, though maybe they’ll work better on the big screen. I wonder if Marshall can pull it off without Bob Fosse’s choreography foundation to work with as with Chicago.

  16. original kate says:

daniel day-lewis is in it? ok -i’m there. that man is so hot he is flammable.

  17. cybor says:

brides war was pathetic, hudson is not convincing in this song, shes too cheezy shes not even sexy, she looks like shes stuggling to keep up, she looks out of shape in the outfit, completely out of depth, nicole kidman & penelope cruz are simply stunning.

  18. Emily says:

I much prefer her mum, Goldie’s awesome. I’ll still be seeing this though, I love Chicago.

  19. kim says:

To me, it doesn’t sound like she’s the one who is doing the singing.

  20. Judy says:

No personal feelings one way or the other toward Kate, but I personally have never found her even remotely pretty.

  21. Ana says:

Did anyone else catch a glimpse of Fergie and think “What is Detective La Toya doing in this film?”

  22. lin234 says:

Wow the trailer looks amazing. I normally don’t like musicals and haven’t seen Chicago but this looks good. Kate’s not the strongest actress out there but she seems to nail this scene with the song. I think she fits so well with this musical number because it calls for someone who is lighthearted and just seems like a lot of fun with a touch of glamour. As for the singing and dancing, she’s more believable doing both than Britney Spears.

  23. Donna says:

I can’t wait to see this! I loved Chicago! Kate sounds good! And I hear Sophia Loren is in it too! Still stunning in her 70’s! Saw a clip with Penelope cruz singing and dancing in it and she was exceptional.

  24. BobLaMonta says:

“She really can sing, I don’t know why people would say its autotune.”

That’s the confusing part: she CAN sing, yet this is definitely a little heavy on the autotune. I’m not sure if that’s just the sound they were going for or what, but it seems a little odd that they would make the effect as obvious as it is.
