And the ‘Project Runway’ Season 6 winner is… (spoiler)

**SPOILERS for the Project Runway finale, which aired last night**

If you were anything like me, you were screaming at your television last night. It was the season finale of Project Runway, and it was a doozy. People Magazine recapped the events really well, so I’m just give my general opinion. First, I think this was one of the strongest final shows ever, in the history of Project Runway. I think every girl, from Carol Hannah to Irina to Althea, all had some really beautiful, incredible pieces.

I think Carol Hannah should have gotten bonus points for doing the most with color, and I think Althea should get bonus points for focusing on her strength, sportswear, which historically doesn’t get enough love from the Project Runway judges (think Uli in season 3). Also, Irina should have gotten more heavily criticized for using all-black. And that’s coming from a person who loves black. Even I was like “damn, can I get a white or a red up in this joint?” But, in the end, The Bitch won. You know who I mean. The girl whose smug face and snotty voice haunted the entire season. Irina is the Devil. She even had a bitchy aside on the final episode! “That’s Althea!” she muttered under her breath. God, I want to smack her.

Like Heidi Klum said, “There can only be one winner of Project Runway,” but on Thursday night’s finale, Carol Hannah Whitfield, Irina Shabayeva and Althea Harper all showed impressive collections under the tents of Bryant Park.

Carol Hannah’s collection, which she said was based on “gothic architecture and fairy tales,” earned points from judges Klum, Michael Kors (glad he could make it!), Nina Garcia and the delightful Susie Menkes, fashion editor for the International Herald Tribune. What struck them were the impeccable tailoring, which was mixed with structured draping, and her use of difficult fabric. They also praised her for her use of color — especially her 13th look, a sweeping teal gown, which was put together in the final days — in a runway show of mostly blacks and grays. Their only complaint, the judges said, was that her collection was not as cohesive as the others.

“My collection is really about New York,” Irina said before her portion of the runway show. The native New Yorker put together 13 looks based on her idea that when women step out into the city, they need to shield themselves from its elements — but shouldn’t have to do it with plain and tacky armor. Instead, she sent oversized knits, pleated, almost scale-like dresses, slick leather vests and big cozy coats down the runway.

While Michael Kors cut her down a bit, telling her, “warrior woman is not a new character” in the fashion world, the judges said her collection was “well-made, modern, with an edge.” Nina especially liked the detailed T-shirts that were revealed beneath the knit armor at the end of the runway. And Kors said she told a story with her collection and had the “best sense of showmanship,” citing her use of helmets on her models. Their big complaint, however, was her obvious overuse of black.

Inspired by science-fiction movies of the ’50s and ’60s, Althea created a collection based on her vision of what women would wear in the future. Apparently, the future is super cool! The judges appreciated her connection to “the street,” and remarked that she was the only designer whose collection included separates and sportswear.

Nina loved seeing a pop of color in her green dress but wondered if she tried to hit too many notes in her collection. In the end, however, the Marie Claire editor said she could take Althea’s extremely wearable clothes — Heidi wanted some of the pieces herself! — and shoot them right away for her magazine.

After many long pauses, Heidi announced Irina the winner of Project Runway. Althea was named the runner-up and said she may not have won but was “still a winner.” But only the winner who won got the prizes, a fashion spread in Marie Claire (Guess you’ll be shooting black now, Nina!), a Paris vacation, representation from Designers Management Agency and $100,000 to put towards her line.

Irina, who was nicknamed “Mean-a Irina” by some of her fellow contestants, melted into tears on the runway and could hardly speak. When Heidi called out her family and Irina said she’d never seen her father cry, even Nina Garcia was dabbing away the tears.

[From People]

It was nice to see Irina’s parents at the end, and I did get slightly emotional seeing her dad weep with emotion. I think he’s the reason she’s such a bitch – he’s been a driving force, a task-master, the critical voice in her head that makes her hold herself to a higher standard, and is probably the root of her snotty attitude. I feel for Carol Hannah and Althea – but they’re two very young women (both are 23 years old), and I think they’ll do well on their own. Althea, especially, I think would work well as a head designer for some fashion house. I see her at Helmut Lang for some reason. And poor Carol Hannah! I wanted her to win so badly. That purple dress was so gorgeous. Sigh.

I was so hoping Carol Hannah would win. The girl that won was so stuck on herself and said from the beginning she was the only “fashion designer” there. I thought Carol Hannah and the other blonde were alot better than the one that won. JMHO

  2. roller girl says:

AWWW… i wanted Carol Hanna to win so much, she seemed to me to be the less b*tchy anyway I wanted someone but Irina to win that girl gets on my nerves I everytime i saw her i wanted to slap her

  3. nAynAy says:

Bad, bad, choice Project Runway. Ver disappointing.

  4. snowball says:

I was so wishing for Carol Hannah to win. She was pretty much the only designer who got along with everyone and she always designed such pretty things. Yeah, she didn’t do pants until Bryant Park (I think), but her dresses were always so romantic.

Althea always bugged me, but I think it was only because of her bouncing booby fetish and her weirdly stooped posture.

I hated, hated Irina. Yeah, she was unusual and made funky things, but man, she was evil. Wendy Pepper evil. The eye-rolling, smirks, little insults she muttered and looking down on everyone else. What a snot. I noticed when they started critiquing her things back on the runway, she started tearing up, probably thinking she wasn’t going to win.

I’m not sure I liked her model Kaylin. I distrust anyone who smiles so much, haha. Althea’s model rocked, she was fierce on the runway, despite her tatas flying all over the place. Carol Hannah’s model Lisa fit perfectly with her personality.

I did get a little twinge of happiness when Irina’s dad was so proud and he was crying. Is it me, or does Nina always cry when they announce the winner?

  5. Cheyenne says:

Bad choice. I thought Carol Hannah knocked it out of the ballpark. I love Althea’s model, she can wear the hell out of anything, but I thought Althea’s collection was too heavy on the sportswear.

  6. Firestarter says:

    BOOOOOOOOO!

    Carol Hannah was ROBBED!

Irina’s collection looked like a funeral procession. Some things were lovely, others not so much.

I was shocked Carol H came in third! She had beautiful things, and used COLOR!!!!!!!

  7. disappointed says:

i don’t get it. they had nothing bad to say about carol hannah’s collection except that it didn’t have a coherent thread (although they did say that they saw great structuring in all the pieces, so how is that not a coherent thread?).

on the other hand, they criticized irina’s collection for being all black. michael made a comment about having seen the “warrior woman” before and that it was nothing new. nina said she’d have difficulty shooting it. michael also took issue with her gown, saying that he wondered if they all thought they had to finish the collection with a gown because it didn’t fit with the rest of the collection.

so how, after all that, did they give the win to irina?

i thought the same thing after christian won in season 4. i think that the producers decide who they want to win, and that’s who wins despite how good (or bad) they are. it’s usually the one that creates the most drama (read: ratings). if you notice, the judges NEVER disagree about anything the designers create. there’s absolutely no way that four different individuals could be so consistent over the four seasons that i’ve watched.

    the show is rigged.

p.s. what was up with althea wearing uggs on the runway? ugg. she did change into heels after the last model walked, but she looked like it was the first time she had ever worn heels.

  8. nAynAy says:

Oops! I had a typo before.

Bad, bad, choice Project Runway. Very disappointing.

  9. apsutter says:

Thank god this boring talentless season is over!! I only liked althea and carol hannah. I think the producers do pick who they want to win too. Christian deserved to win though. He’s got great designs and a vision for all his pieces. When I think of him I think of a person who was made to be an over-the-top crazy kid who was destined to be a wacky fashion deseigner or make-up artist or something. Plus, he’s done really well with himself since runway

  10. Trillion says:

What a dull season. Could Althea and Carol Hannah be any more boring? I really wish I could’ve seen what Epperson or Ramon would’ve done. But all the girls did much better than I expected. I’m glad Irina won because I thought her collection was superior. She wasn’t as unique as she presented herself, however. Jillian’s presentation featured equestrian helmets last season.

  11. manda says:

I think Althea’s posture is a result of being a tall girl. Sometimes us tall girls just want to be small. But yes, it looks awful.

I was disappointed Irina won just because she was so mean all the time. But I thought all of their lines were really nice, I was surprised at how much I liked Althea’s.

  12. Judy says:

Dang! I fell asleep and missed it! Can you believe it!!!! Hope there’s a repeat very soon.

  13. Xx says:

Carol Hannah had a short dress, second to last that was multi-colored and layered that was just breath taking. Where can I see all the designs again?
It annoyed me that there was so many camera shots of the judges and audience yapping and staring than the actual clothing going down the runway. Isnt the clothes the point? Also the all black thing was ridiculous because it is a TV show and even with HD TV you could barely make out what the hell she made. It reprodued on TV as black shapes with no texture or detail.

  14. Firestarter says:

Jillian was from 2 seasons ago.

ITA with everyone who said this season was boring. I never warmed to any of the contestants like I had in previous seasons.

The challenges were dull, and the judging was dull.

Tim Gunn, however, was great always.

  15. Kaiser says:

Here’s the Project Runway site on Lifetime’s thing… it’s not very accessible, you’re going to have to hunt to see the collections:

    http://www.mylifetime.com/on-tv/shows/project-runway

  16. K says:

I was for Carol Hannah first, Althea coming in second and Irina as last. I kept waiting for someone to say how butt ugly and unflattering those hats were. Only place I see Irina working is for the Military.

  17. original kate says:

yes, carol hannah was so robbed! her collection was lovely: romantic, textured, unexpected. that inverted pyramid tuile skirt was perfection. plus i liked her personally, she seemed very sweet. irina is very talented, but the all black was really boring (and i love black – about 75% of my wardrobe is black!) and read very flat on tv. she just seems so bitchy and entitled. althea and her clothes bore me but i did think she copied irina alot on the show. i really don’t know how they could have picked irina as the winner.

  18. Puppybrite says:

I am gonna have to defend Irina. Her collection was the clear winner, they had to give it to her.

Carol Hannah’s dresses were very cute, but nothing really innovative. She is not ready to be a designer on her own. I think she needs to mentor for a few years with a big designer and then go off on her own, Learn how to be innovative and more diverse.

I think if you actually saw anyone wearing one of Althea’s designs in real life, you would think she was a homeless person (as in, they look good when super tailored to perfect model girls)and I think she was ‘inspired’ my Irina (the big sweater in the last challenge, the super long sleeves in the runway show, the dark makeup) Irina was a stand out from the get-go and Althea didn’t really get noticed until she followed Irina a little closer. PLus she can only make skirts and pants with that weird unflattering extra pleats in the hip area and tapered legs

    P.S.

I would have liked to see Ramon or Eperson’s collection too.

  19. trishy says:

Nthing everyone else – I thought Irina’s collection looked like Catwoman’s Day Off. I liked the casual feel of Althea’s collection, but I think it needed more color and LESS bouncing boobs. But Carol Hannah was robbed. In the same breath, Michael Kors said there was no coherent thread to her collection, then said he loved her plays on volume and tailoring in all the pieces. WTF?

  20. Trillion says:

I just read over on TLo that all of the applause and cheering that we heard during the show was CANNED and the “tent was silent as a tomb”. Suckage!

  21. Xx says:

Thanks for the link! Check out photo #26 of 39 from Carol H’s photo gallery from the finale. I would buy that dress in a minute and immediately find someplace fabulous to go so I could wear it.

  22. Stacie says:

I agree about Carol Hannah, although I would have given it to Logan. He can’t design clothes worth a darn, but he’s so pretty.

  23. Sumodo says:

Anybody think this show has Jumped The Shark? I do!!!

  24. Melissa says:

    Yes, Irina is a bitch
Yes, Carol Hannah was the nicest
However, the main thing was what they put on the runway. Carol Hannah’s was the most beautiful, the most tasteful, the most flattering and the most relatable. She should have won based on her ability. Being nicer is just the icing on the cake!

  25. juiceinla says:

BOOOO- BOOOO- Boo PR6—-I am usually on the side of a Queen of Mean- but that is only if they can back their shit up- Irina is mean without a cause and barely talented. Carol Hannah’s collection was not tied well together, but her pieces were the most luxurious and gorgeous and inspired. I could take Althela or leave her- I would have loved to see what Epperson could have done (He was always surprising me) – Booo- So disappointed.

  26. Apple says:

If a winner had to of been chosen prior to the final show, I would have picked Irina to win.

If a winner had to be chosen based ONLY ON the final collection, Carol Hannah should have won! (IMHO)

Irina’s Final Collection: Too much black, couldn’t see the detail, hats/accessories looked strange, didn’t care for the designs overall.

Carol Hannah’s Collection: Various colors, diverse designs, overall BEAUTIFUL.

Althea Collection: Just not thrilled by anything in it.

  27. Tammy King says:

I thought I had read since this Project Runway was filmed last year and was on hold during the litigation that when the Bryant Park show came up the 3 designers had to show their collection anonymously (sp?)because they were afraid it would get out who had won. Did I dream that?

  28. rose says:

ugh carol hannahs designs were so much nicer. i’d wear carol hannah clothes out. i’d wear irinas to a military funeral. maybe i’d wear altheas to lidl

  29. Essie says:

No, Tammy, it wasn’t a dream, unfortunately!!! The entire season was filmed in 2008 with the finals at Bryant Park last February. ALL of the designers showed a collection, with no introductions and no names mentioned. So, the audience didn’t applaud nor did they react to anything. Tim said that the final three designers spoke to an empty house when they introduced their collection. How sad is that??

At any rate, I think they made the right choice for winner. This season was the absolute worse, designer-wise, and Irina was the only one to stand out throughout. Her final collection was fabulous, as were the other two, but, based on the entire season, Irina was the right choice, IMO!!!

Here’s hoping next season (which is being filmed now) is better than this one was. It can’t be worse!!

  30. MsTriste says:

Bad choice of winner, Project Runway. Horrible ending to a horrible season. No color, no splash, no wow from week to week. Grey white and black from all the designers. Gah – is that where fashion is going?

Now Top Chef on the other hand, this is a GREAT season!

  31. BW says:

I agree with what Apple said above. I really loved Carol Hannah’s collection. It was cohesive, in that everything was inspired by her rendition of gothic architecture and fairy tales. I would never in a million years buy a dress from Irina. What a rotten, mean, snotty attitude she has, and winning Project Runway and subsequently, people buying her clothing, is only going to make her worse, if that is possible. She did not deserve to win with that collection or her attitude. Who does she think she is? She seemed innovative at first, but then she just seemed repetitive. I also had the odd feeling the judges were forced somehow to declare her the winner, and did so begrudgingly.

  32. Trillion says:

MsTriste: Exactement! I am LOVING Top Chef this season and have a gigantic crush on Micheal Voltaggio. I want him to chew me out in the kitchen wearing nothing but Extra Virgin Olive Oil. FTW, I’m Team Ginger Bear.

BTW, this season’s winner of PR Australia also presented an all black collection. Unlike Irina, however, he had amazing charisma and a sense of humor.

  33. SageAdvice says:

Carol Hannah didn’t win because she didn’t present a cohesive collection. She put out a number of pretty clothes that were well made and such and had some elements that were similar but overall, if you were to take each of those pieces and really look at them, you would never say they were from the same designer, let alone the same collection. That was the problem.

Althea’s was a hot mess to me. Her’s was more cohesive but like the judges said, she gets “street” and streetwear isn’t exactly the best stuff for major collections that show in Bryant Park. She seems like she’d be a great designer for H&M or something.

Irina was the best designer hands down. Forget all black-they got on Christian for his collection being mostly black and he still won.

Black can be a very powerful color and make a very powerful collection as it did in Irina’s. Using a lot of color can destroy a collection or make a collection-Irina just seems more comfortable using neutrals; I don’t understand how that’s a bad thing.

Then again, I wear black every day. I also get compliments on my style every day because I wear interesting black pieces. I would definitely buy a lot of the stuff in Irina’s collection.

She also had the most cohesive collection. You could tell that all the pieces were hers. And they were extremely well made. And what detail you could see on television was beautiful and I imagine those clothes were stunning in person.

  34. Trillion says:

TLo’s post win interview w/ Irina can be found here:
    http://projectrungay.blogspot.com/2009/11/t-lo-interviews-irina.html

  35. For Sooth? says:

Team Carol Hannah here. Although I have to say that Irina is very talented I just wouldn’t wear what she was puttin’ out.

I squeezed Kevin’s cheeks from the get go. I don’t care if his food is less dramtic technique wise, he’s the man. And this season had stellar talent indeed. Very fun to watch, EXCEPT FOR PADMA. I want to drop kick her every time she appears on screen and talks with that lock jawed eastern seaboard style. As if!! She smacks of Pr*ck Tease all the way.

  36. emma says:

you know i don’t mind irina winning. i don’t like her model though. i wanted carrol hannah to win – oh and if you like her stuff, you can buy her designs on etsy – but she didn’t. i’m glad althea didn’t win – she has serious problems with construction.

oh and kaiser, if we’re gonna talk about season 3 and sportswear, i think michael did more sportswear than uli.

this season was underwhelming. hopefully the next season will be better.

  37. Trillion says:

I never associated Uli with anything but exceptionally beautiful print-mad flowing summery dresses. Did she even do any sportswear? Micheal was the sportwear designer for sure. I loved him. Actually, I loved all those finalists except Jeffrey. Laura Bennet has a new book – sort of a modern, rich version of Erma Bombeck.

  38. NFLer says:

Sorry this season sucked, not even close to the other previous series.

  39. T D says:

Definitely the most boring season when it comes to clothes and people. Hopefully lifetime can get it’s act together next season. I still can’t believe Irina won.. so yawn….

  40. melisa says:

carol hannah is the real winner
