Ashley Dupre’s advice column is blasted by some, some take her seriously

dupre-post

When we told you that former call girl (you know, a fancy name for a hooker) Ashley Dupre had been hired by the NY Post to give advice on sex and relationships, you thought it was a joke. We did too! But then when Ashley’s first column came out, we all learned that she’s totally serious about this and thinks her previous experience as a high-priced prostitute makes her qualified to be some kind of authority on men and their urges. Well, you didn’t quite buy it, and neither do many media pundits who think the decision by the Post was appalling.

Yep, there she was, Ashley Dupre, with her creative and profitable experience between the sheets, giving advice to New York’s sexlorn in a newspaper that puts a new down in downmarket.

Still, there is a certain logic in setting up a woman who made so many mistakes before the age of 24 as a Dear Abby for the ’10s.

As we all know, those mistakes go far beyond her error of getting a “Hang in There” tattoo in Latin. or agreeing to have sex with Spitzer while he still had black knee socks on.

Dupre is a rich girl who decided the best way to maintain the lifestyle to which she’d become accustomed would be to have sex for money with objectionable guys. Over and over.

Gotta have those Birkin bags and a huge apartment in the Flatiron District while you’re a struggling singer!

Why hear from dignified young actresses and musicians who choose to stay vertical to make ends meet?

Hearing the world view of someone who turned the oldest tricks in the book affords us such sage wisdom as this from Dupre: “Guys are primal.” Isn’t she the first one you think of when you want advice on love, children, and gift items?

She has been penitent on her MySpace page after meeting Russell Simmons in yoga class and siphoning off some of the record mogul’s inner peace as they did the downward dog.

Regrets, yes, though she didn’t go as far as even greedier Imelda Marcos, who crawled up a church aisle on her knees. Guess that position would be kind of redundant.

It’s a wonder that “David K of Tribeca” and “Meredith of Queens” needed to seek out the counsel of the former prostitute.

It’s also a wonder how they knew Dupre would have her first column Sunday and had already written to that fact-challenged paper with questions like “My girlfriend says she doesn’t like porn. Is she lying?”

Hey, if her editors want to give the wanna-be singer her 16th minute of fame and they’re consenting adults, who are we to be snarky about it?

They’re providing a service for those who don’t frequent porn sites. Where else would we have learned that Liberator sex futons are having a Christmas sale if Dupre hadn’t given us the hot tip?

Political cynics might wonder if Dupre isn’t just being used, this time between sheets of paper, to keep Client No. 9′s naughtiness in the public eye as he tries to rise from the Ashleys and run for office again.

Perhaps Democrats will demand equal time and have Republican wife Jenny Sanford pen a competing column after being cheated on by frequently rising GOP star Gov. Mark Sanford of South Carolina.

Of course, they once gave Victoria Gotti a column, so maybe it’s just all about selling newspapers?

With Dupre spread across the newspaper Sundays, perhaps six of Tiger Woods’ mistresses could pick up the slack the rest of the week.

Or, taking the logic a bit further, Bernie Madoff could write a what-not-to-do with your money column; we could get travel tips from Salvatore (Sammy Bull) Gravano; Sen. Larry Craig could advise on how to meet new people; Mel Gibson could give lessons on tolerance and Lindsay Lohan, on sobriety.

[From the NY Daily News]

Of course, not everyone is completely disgusted by the fact that Ashley seems to be parlaying a career out of her previous job choice. She was invited to sit in with the women of “The View” to give her opinion of the continuously growing number of women who are coming forward to talk to the media about their affairs with Tiger Woods. Somehow, Ashley seems to think she is better than they are because the media had to hunt her down instead of the other way around. Radar Online has video of Ashely ripping into these other women for being famewhores. She also slams them because when she apologized to Eliot Spitzer’s wife, she was “sincere,” while these other women aren’t. And the ladies of “The View” seemed to buy this! Nobody called her out at all. I was waiting for Joy Behar to call Ashley a hooker because this time, she wouldn’t have to apologize. But no- Joy just sat next to Ashley and seemed interested in what she had to say.

It would be really cool if the media could just go back to ignoring Ashley again. I realize that some people might consider her relevant again with this whole Tiger Woods scandal, but let’s make one thing clear: so far, none of these women have admitting to being hookers. They actually thought they were in relationships with this guy. Were they skanky? Yes. Should anyone care what they have to say? No. But do we need to bring in an even bigger skank to tell us this? Of course not.

Give a woman a pair of glasses and she is suppose to look intelligent? Why do good things happen to bad people?

and ethel, as someone who HAS to wear corrective lenses, I’ve always found that stereotype to be most offensive.

along with the one where a woman takes OFF the glasses and a man finally says to her, “Miss Jones, you’re beautiful!”

Because “bad people” rule the majority of world. I’m kidding. Sort of. ;-)

I hate it too, but I think its like I touched on yesterday. Ashley is probably just trying to make lemonade out of lemons. Scandal sells.

I feel sorry for the real writer who probably wanted to work for The Post as a columnist, and has real credentials and background to do so. Yet that person gets passed over for the hooker to spew more garbage. Again, scandal sells.

I don’t mind that she’s doing this. I guess Im one of those people that take her seriously since…she does know a lot about the subject. Might as well put those skills to good (and legal) use.

@ Wow: I said the same thing yesterday — she’s not writing this, someone else is. She gets money/noteriety, they get press/readers.

Mens’ urges – to bang anything bangable — none of us need a hooker to tells us that, just live past age 12 years old.

What she does NOT have insight in is MARRIAGE – her advice is keep a man happy, and then the woman will be happier by default. FAIL! There are plenty of “experts” on marriage, sex, and/or family, who would give the same info, but more tact and practicality.

If she was speaking on “How to make him Hot for you again” like a Cosmo-type thing, that would be a different story.

I agree with this totally. She obviously knows what she’s talking about. Personally, I don’t know why people hate sex workers so much. It’s not like she is pretending to be something she isn’t.

Well prostitution IS illegal, despite some moral relativists who feel it’s perfectly fine. She did choose to sell sexual favors. There is a legitimate argument to make that those who break the law, or break a moral code are in fact bad people.

There’s no way in hell this woman is as young as she claims to be. She looks 35, so she’s at least 30.

i’m sort of torn on this one. on one hand i don’t think women should be judged based on their amount of sexual partners. on the other hand i think women like her coming out to the media and glamorizing what they did sends wrong message to young girls: that you don’t need to use your brain and can just spread your legs for some cash instead, like it’s the new cool thing to do. i think stuff like this is taking the feminist movement back years and years…

  13. MSat says:

Exactly, ligeia. This is not some poor, underprivileged girl who had to fight her way out of a bad situation and fell in with the wrong people. This girl had every advantage in life – education, wealth, etc. and because she didn’t want to settle for not having the “Best” material items she whored herself out. Why should anyone think she is capable of giving good or meaningful advice?

  14. Moore says:

ligeia, I agree. That’s a bad lesson to teach but for me its not about how many people she’s slept with. She slept with people’s husbands and thats just low. Thats just as bad as being the cheater. Now she’s giving advice and trying to put a spin on it. Sorry, you’re just as bad as Tiger’s girls. You all should be ashamed.

  16. Sudini says:

The reason “good things happen to bad people” in this world is because there are people who “fail to see” how she’s a bad person. It’s this kind of apathetic and self serving personality that enables these people and rewards this behavior.

Her disrespect for herself and for other women (ie. the wives of the men she helped cheat) and profiting from the selfishness of her actions is what makes her a bad person. She’s done her share of contributing to lies and adultery, yet she’s rewarded for that with a high-profile job? She’s a disgusting person who continues to profit off of disgusting behavior. Leave it to Murdoch…The NY Post is like her mother ship.

  17. DD says:

Hi Sudini, these men specifically sought out a hooker. They made an appointment for those services in exchange for money. She didn’t help those guys cheat, they were hell bent on cheating. I know blame the hooker she should have had a no husband clause. I’m not saying she’s a classy girl but I fail to think she’s the abominal person she’s being made out to be.

  19. Emily says:

I don’t know, a column from a hooker giving advice on sex makes sense to me. I mean, if she was a high class, presumably expensive one, then she’d have to be good at what she did. That said, I wouldn’t be taking relationship advice from her, unless I wanted to know how to sleep with someone in a relationship without feeling guilty about it.

  20. Sudini says:

    Hi DD,
While the argument that people who are hell bent on cheating are going to find someone to cheat with may be true to an extent, it doesn’t excuse those who consciously cheat with them. That’s like saying a murder accomplice isn’t really a bad person because the killer would’ve just killed anyway.

She was aware that some of the men she was sleeping with were married, and she even tried to justify it by saying that she believes she was helping these men to stay married by having sex with them and catering to their dishonesty.

Something tells me if she were married, and her husband said he cheated on her to save the marriage, she wouldn’t take real kindly to that.

She basically lied to herself so that she could look herself in the mirror. Bottom line is, we all know right from wrong but some people choose to do wrong anyway. She contributed to the decietfulness of others, and in doing so has not only caused pain to those families that now know about it, but continues to send the message to people that it’s not so bad to help a guy cheat on and lie to the person who trusts them, as long as you do it with “good intentions”. People like her (and there are many) breed apathy and unkindness in a society, and for that she is a bad person.

(And it makes me sad to say that about someone, because I believe she probably has the potential to be a good person. She’s just chosen to be extremely selfish in her choices, for whatever reason)

    Word, legeia. Spot on.

Also, I don’t know why being a hooker suddenly makes you an expert at sex. Oh, so you let some dude wail away on you while you sat there filing your well manicured little finger nails bored out of your mind? Please. Selling sex does not make you an expert on anything to do with relationships, love, or fornicating.

Is prostitution illegal in the US? I mean really, I’m not making some point, just asking. You guys have all sorts of different laws in different states (like it being illegal to drive barefoot in Orlando, apparently, ref Tiger Woods – like I did today due to the insane but stunning high-heel platform espadrills I was wearing). Is prostitution really illegal in all forms everywhere in the US?
