V Magazine features plus sized models looking unairbrushed where it counts

v63_solve-sundsbo_lr
V Magazine has a new pictorial featuring plus-sized models, but instead of dressing the women in flattering outfits they ramp up the skin and skank with nude artfully draped photos more suited to a men’s magazine than a fashion tome. These are beautiful top plus-sized models and it’s like they have no other role for them than to imitate FHM. My initial impression is that it feels exploitative, but I guess that’s how most fashion magazines do it so it’s not like it’s anything new. We’re just seeing more curves than we’re used to. Most of the commenters on Jezebel don’t agree with me, though, and say that it’s a welcome change to see such sexy larger women. They do look hot.

I googled the stylist, Nicola Formichetti, and he’s a guy who’s styled Lady Gaga and is responsible for her hideous orange V Cover. He also did Gisele Bundchen’s V cover in which she shows off her ass cheeks in a ripped up denim onesie.

These photos will be featured in an issue of V out on January 14, and in a press release they write: “What’s the skinny on today’s models? Big is bigger than ever, and these bombshells of plus-size are proving that there’s plenty of room in the fashion world for women who look like…women.”

Good for V for featuring larger women, but did they do it to celebrate beauty in all sizes or to bring some attention to their publication? I’m not sure if this compares to Glamour Magazine’s nude but tasteful photo of size 12 model Lizzi Miller. Glamour aimed to show a woman “comfortable in her own skin” and after the overwhelmingly positive response to Miller’s photo they did a follow-up spread with more plus-sized models. The women were still nude and hanging on each other, but the result was kind of triumphant rather than slutty.

One thing that commenters on Jezebel mention is that these photos are still airbrushed. There’s not a cellulite dimple in sight. The models are all there, though, and they’re beautiful.

I’m not sure i like that – in my opinion, it’s not sexy. The girl in the last photo with the grey costume on, in that pose, makes my lunch come back up.

  2. Kevin says:

DAMN! Giselle looks hot in that cover shoot! Now if she was only mute.

  3. anon says:

i can honestly say i’ve never seen photos like this before. i think it’s brilliant. can you imagine how different our perceptions of body image would be if this was the norm for magazines. the only thing i would say is that it seems to be always plus size or emaciated. i’m a uk size 10-12 and you never see that size in photos. what i would like is if plus size/regular size/shorter models were used and it wasn’t just a gimmiky feature

  4. Laurrie says:

Photography doesn’t really do justice to curvier women. Even in art, three dimensional representation tends to create a bloated effect (or maybe it’s decades long instrumental conditioning that clouds the thinking), and in this case, the idiot shoot stylist picked clothes that are far too tight (to emphasize each roll and love handle). Maybe to indirectly justify the use of rail thin models?
But it has to be said that fuller figured models are far prettier than the gaunt variety.

  5. Rose says:

Beautiful? Don’t think so, rolls of fat have never been my idea of beauty. Beauty is subjective and telling people these fat models are beautiful is like me telling people Angelina Jolie is beautiful, some people think so, others not so much.

  6. Enonymous says:

I can honestly say non of these body types in the above pictures are appealing and certainly NOT sexy. Way to go to these stupid campaigns glamorizing fatness and being overweight in a already obese society. Leave modeling to ACTUAL MODELS and concentrate on promoting a healthy TONED medium.

  7. Peach says:

These women are gorgeous. I mean, I would happily gain 30lbs for the facial structure of the completely nude lady. I would. Absolutly.

However, I wish they had been used for something other than ‘we’re here and we’re bigger than usual!’. I wish these women were used in actual model campaigns. Not just shock publishing.

I’d be happy to see ALL body sizes represented. Small to large. Now, that does’t mean I want morbidly obese, Because that is unhealthy. In the same strain though, using anorexic models should be just as verboten.

But these women arn’t morbid anything. They’re just hot. It’s a little Maxim for me, but hopefully in the future we can see more intigration for normal model campaigns.

  8. Lway says:

    @ Kevin – LOL! 🙂

  9. Lita says:

Enonymous, I think you will find these are ‘ACTUAL MODELS’ – just not rail thin ones. Hence the title ‘plus size model.’

  10. Jojo says:

They were given such beautiful faces, you’d think they’d make the effort to go to the gym! What a waste.

  11. Becks says:

This ad and these comments are the reason my husband left me over a year ago. I quit smoking and had a hysterectomy and gained alot of weight. I saw myself fat and refused to have FAT SEX – I know people see me as fat, and I didnt want him to see me as fat, and then naked on top of it.
You people who are disgusted by heavy people are why I will be alone.
I dont chose to be heavy and I do go to a gym, but I am still fat.
Most of you should think before you speak. Words are very hurtful!!

  12. teehee says:

Wow the superficiality of people—- well, i was gonna say is surprising, but really I shouldnt be surprised. These are beautiful women and this shoot doesn’t glamorize obesity but seeks to include an obviously highly stigmatized and rejected portion of the population all around the earth: people who arent stick thin.
And more importantly it points out how absurdly airbrushed everything is yet people take it as real. If it were just another round of skinny pictures, you wouldnt even think twice as to just how fake or unhealthy it might be.
You can be heavy and still be healthy, happy, and sexy- all the dimensions of your human being are still present.

I dont think its an attempt to popularize anything; I think thin will always be in (becuse its the hardest thing to obtain!!) and just find it a nice wake up call to the hypocritical people attacking others who probably look more like themselves than any other magazine picture theyve seen in a good long while.

  13. Enonymous says:

Yeah right, they can call themselves ‘models’ all they want but it does not make them one.

  14. LolaBella says:

The women in thumbnails 2,3, 4 and 7 look absolutely gorgeous!

  15. CandyKay says:

I wouldn’t call these models obese. My daughter and I were at the art museum last weekend and saw a lot of sculptures and paintings of women with similar proportions.

It has a lot to do with what the eye is trained to see. I find Angelina Jolie’s figure more disturbing than these ladies, although if I had to describe what I see as the ideal feminine shape, it would be somewhere in between.

  16. BitterBetty says:

They are all attractive women. you people must have serious body image issues if you find them hideous to look at.

  17. WTF?!? says:

Becks, your posting is indicative of what the fat-haters don’t get– that it’s more than eating poorly and not “hitting the gym” that leads women to gain weight. Your ex is a dick and will get his Karma, and you deserve to be happy and made to feel beautiful.

This and the next generation of young men are being done a disservice– as are the women– by having scrawny, waxed-bald, photoshopped females presented as ideal or the Norm. A person can be fit and healthy and still be 20 pounds “overweight”.

  18. Kevin says:

I think these gals look damn good! Heck, four beers and no friends around, I could be talked into stoking the old furry furnace! (gratuitous winter reference, heck it is cold here in Florida!)

  19. MizzExpert says:

Dear Becks~You have been very brave to achieve good things for your health such as quitting smoking. There is somebody who would love you for who you are so don’t give up! 🙂

These women who are depicted in the photo shoots have the benefit of good lighting, make-up, stylists and great photography, BUT they exude confidence in who they are and are choosing to be excited about life no matter what.

These gals should be an inspiration to us all as far as not being negative towards others. We definitely shame heavy people in our society and that is not right.

Having been in the business, this is something that needs to assimilate from the top down, i.e. how the media portrays those who they deem acceptable or not. This is a HUGE step in the right direction.

We all have a weight that we feel our best at but, sadly, age and gravity and genes are something almost insurmountable, esp. for we women!

  20. HEB says:

I think its great, but why do the magazines have to say HEY LOOK AT ME< WE”RE BEING NICE TO BIG GIRLS THIS MONTH

why cant they just sneak big girls in there every once in a while and make it NORMAL?!

  21. p3rp3tu4 says:

It brings to mind babies, cherubs, wrestlers… If they are healthy bmi etc & there is a market for this ok. Do people this size feel the same aversion to other sizes? (naked) or barely clothed? I don’t want to have those images in my head. Just like they may not wish to have other types in theirs.

  22. Goddess711 says:

These women represent the majority of women in the real world, that’s the beauty of this photoshoot. I’m tired of seeing women represented as perfect only if they’re thing. “Thin” doesn’t mean going to the gym these days, it means being anorexic, bulemic, on diets or drugs – THAT is unhealthy. These women look healthy and normal.
Superficially thin doesn’t guarantee happiness or longetivity in relationships. These women don’t represent unhealthily overweight in the least – I love how they love themselves.

  23. journey says:

becks, sweetie, there was a magazine called BBW (Big Beautiful Woman), not sure it’s still published, but i believe several others similar to it are out there. it’s a fashion and lifestyle magazine for the larger woman. it’s written by and for women who refuse to let their weight define who they are. it’s about not putting your life on hold until the scale says the magic number. it’s about taking joy in your body, loving others, loving yourself. it’s about women who go to the gym, ride their bikes, enjoy healthy food, but are still larger women. it’s also about men who love their woman, love their curves, yes even their rolls. it’s about self-acceptance.

  24. Amy says:

I’m a very slim woman but I’m small so it suits me, how anyone can call these women fat and disgusting is mind blowing, they all look amazing! I think they all look great and wish I had the curves they did!

  25. ree says:

its about being healthy people, yeash!
    we are so stupid.

i can’t see how being “obese” by definition is ever healthy tho. all medical studies say otherwise.

just as being heroin thin is unhealthy.

when are we gonna wake up and understand that in the country.

  26. IceKitty says:

Wow! Most of you people are really petty and mean.

I don’t see any “plus sized models” up there. Just beautiful women, who look like most of the freaken world.

Some of your comments make me want to throw up my coffee!!

  27. IceKitty says:

Thanks Goddess711 – Your comments is exactly what I was feeling!

  28. snowball says:

Kevin, that attitude makes ME nauseous if it means what I think it does. It’ll take four beers and no friends to stop you along with someone to talk you into hitting it? They probably wouldn’t have you.

For all of you puking into your eggs, I hope someday you either fall for someone who’s as heavy as these women are or that your current significant other gains a ton of weight. Then what? You either dump them or discover that they actually still are beautiful?

These models (yes they’re MODELS enonymous – they probably earn more in a month or two of photo shoots than most of us do in a year) are beautiful and are being done a huge disservice by cramming them into pants a size too small and bathing suits they wouldn’t be caught dead in anyway.

Becks, I’m so sorry your husband was..well, what he was. It’s like a double whammy – you’re feeling crappy already, then he added a second scoop of it. As someone else said, karma’s going to be rough on him.

  29. LolaBella says:

Some of these photos remind me of paintings by Rubens and Renoir. The women that they painted were considered the norm back in that time.

In contrast, the norm in this day and age as dictated to us by the impossibly photochopped models on most magazine covers, is the size zero model.

To each their own, and you can find beauty in either. If they are HEALTHY then that is the most important thing.

I have to say again that the models in the middle picture of the top row of thumbnails are gorgeous; beautiful bodies and faces.

  30. IceKitty says:

Correction – I didn’t mean these women are not models. what I meant is that I do not consider them plus sized…

  31. diva says:

It’s funny everyone on this site is always up in arms saying how skinny is unattractive and yet when there is a magazine dedicated to plus size women the comments overrall are not very positive. Seems strange…

  32. Elin says:

I don’t think these models look like your average woman. They are models, and hence STUNNING!
I love it! Those usual skinny bitches in fashion mags just look asexual.

  33. Lita says:

Yes, Enonymous. And when I say I want the sky to be pink it magically happens. Because I am Lita, goddess of all and when I say something it is suddenly true! I love being me!

They *are* models, that is apparently their career, that they actually work in (clearly) and the fact you don’t like them just means they are the same as any other model out there who people individually like the look of or not. Not that their entire career is suddenly invalidated!

  34. Ophelia says:

@Becks *hugs* I’m so sorry you feel that way. I bet a lot of women do. You’re brave for saying it. I hope things get better for you, hon.

  35. Kevin says:

Snowball it was a joke. Can we not be bitchy on celebitchy anymore? Geez. The friends thing means “no witnesses, by the way”

  36. Dolkite says:

If you like plus-size/fat/chubby women, fine…if not, not. Why expend so much effort in trying to get others to feel the way you do? I prefer chubby girls, but that doesnt mean I hate skinny models…I may find some of them attractive, but I just dont find skinny girls sexy.

Moreover, why are people always moaning about how unfair it is that women are held up to certain standards? Its not exactly breaking news that plenty of men prefer round and chubby girls. People are just so desperate to fit in and embrace whatever some magazine tells them they should look like instead of deciding for themselves if they would look better thinner or chubbier.

  37. Dolkite says:

Also, these girls look pretty slim for plus-size to me. I absolutely love a belly on a girl, and I barely see anything here.

  38. Lita says:

I sort of got the impression from becks’ (albeit brief) description that it was more her feelings about her body that got in the way of the marriage being okay (I mean, I am sure the ex is a wanker, of course!! ;o)

The way I took it was more of a “be healthy because that’s truly important and don’t let some body image issue, real or imagined, get in the way of living” cautionary tale. And it made me sad. For God’s sake we live such a short span of time.

Also snowball re Kevin’s comment, I don’t know but he is pretty freaking sarcastically funny usually the comments I’ve seen in the past – personally, I’d take it with a grain of salt (whether it was well timed or not). Also hello – guy, florida, reads and comments on a gossip blog .. I don’t reckon he’s going near beer out of a bottle or women anytime soon. Even without his ‘men friends’ present. So shove that in your pipe and smoke it, Kevin ;p

  39. artbitch says:

Ok we’ve done body size, now let’s see some short models!

  40. Kevin says:

Sorry to disappoint Lisa, but I’m hetero (not that there is anything wrong with that). I also comment on my buccaneers website (not so much this year because they totally suck) and Cap Mel’s fishing website. Can’t help it if I like to slag on celebs. Everybody has to have a hobby or two.

  41. Dolkite says:

Art – I know they tend to prefer taller women in modeling, but I think most women find shorter girls more attractive.

  42. Newyorking says:

Why does “real women” automatically mean plus size? Neither end of the spectrum is good, especially if the end is reached by unhealthy means. Real women means women who may or may not have curves, but who are naturally the way they are. Plus size is not good if the person is unhealthy, just as thin is not good if the person is unhealthy. So over these magazines trying to push plus size as the real woman.

  43. Moore says:

I’m not impressed. Could you try a bit harder next time, V? So you got plus sized models. Can we get plus sized models with better clothes? That gray suit and the pic with the jeans have to go but the woman in the leopard print (whatever print) and then the black suit looks incredible.

Its not about size to me (obviously anorexic and obese should not be allowed) but its about what they’re wearing and if it makes me want to wear it too. I only see two outfits worth wearing here.

ETA: I agree Newyorking. I consider myself to be a real woman and I’m not the size of these women nor am I super thin. How about a balance?

  44. Birdie says:

I also read Jezebel and comment there… I’ll skip my comment because it wasn’t that great, but I would like to re-post another woman’s words who I felt said best what this photo shoot means….

“I was looking at these pictures, and a solid 95% of my brain was like, “Fuck all that’s purdy,” but 5% was trying desperately to tell me that they are fat and ugly and that they should hate themselves (just like I am fat and ugly and should hate myself!!!!!!). Not because they are, obviously, or I am, but because I have been so trained to think that having a pouchy belly is unattractive”

“Part of what I like so much about these photos is that I do think that if I had seen more of this when I was younger, at the age when I started to realize that other people had their own consciousnesses, that other people looked at me and didn’t see me exactly as I saw myself, then perhaps my internal inconsistencies and body-loathing would be slightly less prone to fuckitude. For example, although my nose is kind of “larger” than “normal” or ideal (for a 21st century American white woman), I can still understand and believe that my nose doesn’t make me a hideous fucking monster, because there have been people our culture has deemed “pretty” with big noses. But there hasn’t really been any “pretty” pouchy bellies (or big thighs or whatever), so as far as my brain is concerned my belly makes me a hideous fucking monster, because I just can’t get myself to really, really believe otherwise.”
    _ Cimorene, via Jezebel

  45. bros says:

lita- enonymous always comes out of the shadows to comment on any post about weight issues, unabashedly ragging on people who arent rail thin, taking up the cause of anorexia, getting mad at people who tell her friend she is too thin etc. she has a bone to pick with the unbony. ignore it.

  46. Ogechi says:

Brillant, Brillant and absolute Brillant…I love them all.

  47. t says:

I remember reading once about studies that concluded it was the waist to hip ratio of a woman that determined whether or not a man found a woman physically appealing. It didn’t matter how much or how little women weighed, or what culture or time period they were from, as long as they had a waist to hip ratio in a certain range, that’s what rated with men.

I don’t know the details, but those studies popped into my head when reading the comments.

  48. Enonymous says:

Bite me Bros, don’t you dare comment about me. You are no better. As for Lita, honey, I work as an ACTUAL model for a big modeling agency to pay for my university fees so I have a pretty good idea what is required to be a proper model. I get so annoyed with people like these that are hating on models or any woman who is not chubby or overweight and trying to blame their insecurities on others. Not everyone can be a model so deal with it. And you can spin it how you want to but these ‘models’ above are grossly overweight and very unhealthy, especially for their age.

  49. Lita says:

    Ah Bros, many thanks.

Now Kevin .. I agree there’s nothing wrong with hetroism if you swing that way and I think people should just get the hell over the novelty of the whole “oh wow I like someone of the opposite gender” thing (so 1987). However I do note you tackfully declined to mention if you drink beer from a glass with your pinky sticking out. Though that sports evidence (I think, unless you’re into piratical themes? Me = femme and not american) was very butch, kudos ;o)

  50. MizzExpert says:

Here come the claws…we might as well be talking religion or politics! 🙂

  51. bros says:

unfortunately for you enony, it appears the modeling tent is large enough to accomodate some other women getting in on the action-they are the pages of a major magazine, so deal with it. As for their BMIs, they would probably be considered overweight, not grossly overweight, and not obese. I just dont get why you become so incredibly rabid and bothered by people’s bodies and weight. its like you cant stand when someone is different than you. get over it. you look irrational and neurotic and bizarre freaking out whenever someone has extra pounds and beat you to a major magazine spread.

  52. Rose says:

Wow Becks, way to blame EVERYONE else for why your husband left a sexless marriage. Why yes, it’s the advert and these comments, nothing to do with your relationship with each other at all.

  53. Lita says:

Sorry Bros one more and I’m done. Must sleep :o)

Enonymous, my only contention was that these women are working as models and thus are not invalidated by your opinion or judgement. They are similarly not validated by mine, merely by the fact they are working, are paid to model. I think madonna is asinine and cannot sing, doesn’t make her not a singer. The thing is you last post voiced more about your seeking of validation or rebuttal of insecurity – wow big top agency (you are brilliant and sought after), wow model (you must be so hot! And super thin!), wow it’s not just a job it’s to pay for uni (oh and smart smart smart!). Yay you. I am so glad you let me know. Because that is so much *more* that anyone else. Also your low key attempt to belittle by calling me ‘honey’ .. Well I don’t know what to say. I guess that’s cause your so smart and thin and hot (’cause of the big agency and the uni thing). Shucks.

  54. Larissa says:

maybe they are just trying to prove the obvious, that non-skinny women can be beautiful too!!!!

and I think it was about time that mags would open up to all kinds of beauty, because we can´t help to look at beautiful things can we? it´s only human nature! now yes, none of these gorgeous women are obese, but we don´t have to be obese to be a plus size, and being a plus size is not always unhealthy , neither being slim/fit.
As for myself, I´ve been on both sides, however never found myself to be an attractive person, no matter which side of the fence I was at!
So bottom line is, no matter what´s your body weight…you can only be 3 things,
beautiful, average or just plain ugly!!! lmao

  55. Firestarter says:

No one has to like “curvier” women, but a fact: They are a part of society.

Not everyone is built to be thin. No wonder teens kill themselves becoming anorexic, given several of the comments on here.

For the record, I have been both 20lbs overweight AND a deathly 75lbs (I’m ALMOST 5″1). I almost killed myself before a high school reunion by going from 95lbs (where I am confortable) to 80lbs bacause I wanted to show the people who told me in High school that I had a “pretty face if you would just take off some weight”, that I was skinny! I kept dieting for a bit to lose another 5! Sad thing is. they all thought I looked great, but the photos told another story. I had such issues because of regular baby fat, that I became anorexic due to the words of high school jackasses. Luckily I decided eating was more fun than starving.

  56. jassy says:

    BEAUTIFUL !!!

  57. Becks says:

ROSE: I had a good marriage for a very long time. As they weight came on, his eyes started looking the other way. I quit smoking after 32 years of smoking, and had already put on some weight after the female issues. Please dont say I had marriage problems and thats the reason he left, because its not.
Everyone that knew us was shocked. He left because I gained weight, weight that I do go to the gym to try and get off. I feel I eat healthy.
Yes, Im sad to be alone because of my weight, but it is because of my weight, not because I had marriage problems to start with.

  58. Rose says:

You yourself said you refused to have sex with him. I don’t know the ins and outs of your marriage and I don’t want to know, but refusing sex is a real downward spiral for any couple. What issue I had was that you blamed this advert and comments, which I very much doubt had ANY part in your break up.

  59. Jill says:

Fat is not womanly, nor manly, it’s just fat. I hate being even a pound overweight, but I’ll never blame this on advertising, my parents, men or anyone else. It’s MY preference.
Humans were meant to be slim and healthy and I find that beautiful and reassuring.

  60. Firestarter says:

@Becks- It is not uncommon for men to look elsewhere when women gain weight, so I can totally believe that weight was an issue and not other problems.

You are better off without such a shallow person in your life.

  61. Just a Poster says:

WTH? What up with all the hate?

Way to start the new year gang, hope the haters have at least one redeeming quality they hope to improve this year.

  62. Rose says:

Oh yeah, it’s ‘hate’ to not find fat attractive. Ridiculous argument. Everyone has different preferences, it is not hate that drives it. What is hateful is being browbeaten about one’s preference. Gerard Butler carrying moobs and a gut, not attractive to me either. Do I hate him? No, I don’t KNOW him, just not attracted to him in that shape. Brad Pitt wearing that stupid beard, yuck, Brad Pitt Fight Club yum. No hate involved, just preferences.

  63. JPX says:

“it’s a welcome change to see such sexy larger women. They do look hot.” It’s not a welcome change and they do not look hot. I’m sorry but the truth is that being overweight is not good for your health and it makes you look gross. People who defend being overweight are too lazy to do anything about it.

  64. Just a Poster says:

Rose you do realize that it takes more energy to post/rant/whine about your dislikes than to simply close the tab and surf something else?

  65. Jessipalooza says:

They need to have a magazine spread to /every/ type of person. Fat, short, tall, skinny, hell – even disabled. I think it would rock, have something in there for everyone, and would tell the norms of society to fuck off…in a good, uplifting, and positive way. :3

  66. Rose says:

Just a Poster, I neither ranted nor a whined, I offered personal opinion reply to your ‘why the hate’ comment. If you feel the need to be passive aggresive perhaps you should be the one to move on.

  67. Some GUy says:

While the women are certainly pretty, let’s be honest here:

You will not find women like this in the majority of the world. A larger size is a sign of status. The US and parts of Europe are the richest and therefore capable of producing women of that size.

YOu think women like that are common in India, Africa, or Asia where the bulk of the world’s population resides? Hardly.

Just remember: Simply because the US is the one of the most overweight nations in the world doesn’t mean that everyone else is.

There is a happy medium between what you see here and the rail thin models.

Should we accept heavier types for who they are? Of course. Should we shun them? Never. But in the grand scheme of things, are they the “norm?”

    Maybe in America.

“Not everyone is built to be thin. No wonder teens kill themselves becoming anorexic, given several of the comments on here.”

Being overweight is another form of suicide, you know. It just takes longer to have an affect.

  68. Cinderella says:

These women are not obese. They are curvy and thick, but not obese.

They do look sexy. They are working what they have along with some great hair, makeup and fabulous high heels.

And I will bet none of them are dateless. I know plenty of men that would love to go out with girls looking like that.

Becks–hang in there. Take care of you first, and a good person will come along.

  69. Stan says:

    Beach Ball Bingo.

  70. Ogechi says:

    @Becks:
I can feel your pain, and I know that you are going through a very dark time right now. I want to assure you that I have known thousands of women who have not only survived situations such as yours, but have also grown tremendously as a result of their pain. What I can promise you is you will survive too, and that if you choose to grow and heal from this experience, you will enter into a life that far surpasses anything you have known. Don’t pray that your ex returns and to do that is to put your happiness in the hands of something outside yourself. I’m glad it was mntioned that these photos have been photoshopped as well. Its very rare to find photos in magazines that doesn’t have some alteration to them before they go to press. But still … nicely done.

@Becks – you DID loose weight… dead weight…your former hubby. Try not to feel bad, honey. Just concentrate on being healthy and positive things FOR YOU.

  72. guest says:

bringing the sexy their way…good for them. gorgeous pics imo.

  73. lucy2 says:

@Jessipalooza – I totally agree. A mix of all body types, just as advertisers use a mix of all races, would be wonderful.
I like seeing something other than ultra skinny models. But something about this particular photo shoot, the clothing choices, and the poses seems exploitative, like look! we’re doing a photo spread of plus size models! These women are lovely, and should get regular modeling work, not just the “special” issues. The truly groundbreaking thing would have been to begin including all body types in all campaigns, with all sorts of fashions.

  74. Raven says:

People were meant to be all sizes. It bothers me to see essentially one size in most magazines and in television and movies. I feel about the push to all be one size like I feel about plastic surgery. Why isn’t uniqueness celebrated rather than the push by narrow minds to create a certain ideal and everything else is lesser? This push also creates unreal body self-images in the minds of girls. It’s just wrong and anything that challenges that view is good to me.

  75. Peach says:

    @Some guy:
Where are you from? I live in Paris and I’ve lived in Africa, travelled to Asia and S. America and done the US thing.

First of all: Women from Morocco to Tanzania are built thick. And because of their hardy diets of meat and bread, they tend to look normal until they hit their 20’s. Then they steadily gain weight.

In a lot of those countries being model thin is a joke. It’s laughed at. How can you expect a decent husband if you have no meat on your bones?

and most Asians are naturally thinner and petit. They are copared to almot all nationalities, unless you go further north. For instance, Mongolian women and even Korean women can be more prone to gaining weight because of the types of environments they come from.

Latinas certainly come in all sizes.

And Europeans? Please. Where do you think Bottacelli got his muses from? There are a lot of thin women here. Because we walk a rediculous amount. But I’ve seen my fair share of larger women the size of these models from Porto to Moscow.

I think maybe instead of assuming American women are a certain way, you should get out and do some more travelling.

  76. Some GUy says:

    “Thick” is not overweight.

I’ve lived in Asia and been to 20 different countries and while there are certainly women out there who are “thick,” the majority don’t come close.

  77. Some GUy says:

And last time I checked, most models are not older women whose metabolisms have slowed.

  78. Alarmjaguar says:

@ some guy — actually, for most of history being bigger was a status symbol b/c it demonstrated that you had plenty to eat and didn’t have to work hard. Now, in the US and other western parts of the world, being skinny is the ideal for similar reasons — you can afford to eat right, have time to go to the gym or have a personal trainer, etc. and most people are larger so being smaller sets you apart. Different cultures have different ideals of beauty. It is often precisely b/c a look isn’t common that it becomes sought after.

  79. Goddess711 says:

Any guy would be lucky to get a date with one of those women, especially when this one photoshoot provided them with more income than most people make in a year! They’re beautiful and have self-confidence which usually is a major turn on. They don’t need any other men or women to grade their self worth.
None of these women are “obese” or “unhealthy”; it’s just a perception. Add “body dysmorphia” to the list of afflications that men, women and, God help us, our children & teens, are subjected to.
These women are fabulous and proportionate and they love themselves enough to show it out loud and proud!

  80. Samantha says:

The very last photo…of the woman in the silver bathing suit. At first glance, I thought she was wearing a diaper underneath, or that the “outfit” was some weird funky lady gaga design. Turns out its a pouch. Now, I am not one one to complain about thick models being used, but…I mean, c’mon…at least choose more flattering outfits for them.

  81. hatsumomo says:

Damn, I am more blessed than I realized. When I gained weight I thought I looked awful and hated being naked. But when I was looking on our desktop for some pics to upload somewhere, I found my man’s ‘stash’. His cache of porn pics. Now I know my man likes big boobs, I have my own homegrown 42Ds. But what surprised me was that aside from big boobies was a lot of the women also looked like me. As in they were ‘full-figured’ so to speak. And had red hair. So apparently he wasn’t lying to me when he said he loved my fatter figure!

  82. C-DUB says:

There is nothing wrong with these ladies!!! WORK IT!!!

  83. Cakes says:

@ Becks: Sexual incompatibility can break a marriage. If you refuse to have sex with your man HE WILL look else where. Justifiable? Absolutely not. Understandable? Yes. He let you down when he didnt hold up his end of the bargain and you are better off finding a mate that will love you for who you are.
From your comments it appears that you still hold a lot of hurt and anger towards him. Its definitely understandable but maybe you should get some therapy to help you sort out the feelings you have.
Also, you can not blame others for your mistakes in your marriage. You said yourself thet you refused him sex, and “You people who are disgusted by heavy people are why I will be alone.” With this attitude of blaming others yea you will be alone.
I was dumped by my ex-fiancee for a woman who weighed about 95 lbs. I weighed 155. That hurt. But I got over it, realized he was the one with the problem and I lost the weight. He did have a point: I did get too comfortable and I let myself go. He wasnt attracted to me because of it. He didnt have to cheat on me to send that message but thats ok.
As for the ad: I dont think anorexic models are pretty and I dont think over weight models are pretty. I think healthy women are beautiful.
I have had many friends that were different sizes. My friend who was thick was the exact same weight as me but looked heavier because of her body type. My friend who I almost wanted to strangle was constantly trying to gain was healthy at a size 0 and barely 100 lbs. They both were healthy, different, and beautiful girls.

  84. ! says:

    @Jojo

No, YOU’RE a waste. A waste of air, space, a waste of a human being. If you think a pretty face is “wasted” on a larger body, then you are so effed up that I can’t even begin to discuss all the reasons why.

A pretty face is pretty no matter who it belongs to. A person isn’t any more or less valuable for their appearance.

Oh and Diva, way to be yourself as usual. “I’m so proud to be thin ’cause its so hard when everyone is so fat!” What compels you exactly to constantly try to one up everyone in every single thread you comment on in Celebitchy? Does it really make you feel better to point out how much better you think you are than everyone else?

  85. ! says:

Also, “they’re so unhealthy!” is just a thinly veiled way to say “They’re fat and I just won’t accept it!”. Don’t dress it up like you’re not just another callous fatty hater by pretending you’re soooo concerned with their health. You’re not their doctor, you have NO IDEA if they’re healthy or not.

  86. Firestarter says:

Cake- I see your point but here’s my thought: When you take your marital vows, in most cases the phases “For better and for worse, in sickness and in health” are exchanged. How shallow is a man or woman who bails because the other partner gains weight? Doesn’t say much for their character. In a marriage, people SHOULD be comfortable and if it’s with a few pounds extra, well so be it.

Of course I do not know Becks personally, but I am going to go out on a limb and speculate that she more than likely wouldn’t have left her husband over a weight issue. She stated there were reasons for her weight gain: Quitting cigarettes, hysterectomy, and ultimately her husbands attitude. Perhaps had he not been such a superficial man, he could have helped and encouraged her to try and regain her figure, instead of bailing on her.

Let’s face it, men, all too often complain about women being fat, ugly, stupid, not good in bed, etc… when 9 times out of ten, they are no Adonis’ themselves. If you love someone, it shouldn’t be based on their weight. If you love them, you help them through their rough patches. If women let themselves go, it usually stems from something medical or emotional.

As I said Cake, I totally see your point, and I find it sad that you too, were a victim of a shallow man. Did you or he ever wonder why,( and you put it this way, so please do not be offended) you “let yourself go”? Screw him for not caring enough to try and figure out why! You and Becks are better off without those men!

@!- Gotta say, you made several good points. People, for the most part, do not “care” about these “fatties” health or the way it “taxes” our health care system. They usually are the ones pointing and laughing, not offering helpful dietary tips or inspiration. It amazes me when people get all up in arms when someone snarks on a “fat” celeb, but they have no problem snarking on plus sized models or real, every day people.

  87. Cakes says:

Firestarter- Thats why I said its understandable but not justifiable. He should have lived up to his vows and the fact that he didnt does say a lot about his lack of character. Any man who does that should be ashamed.
Whats understandable is if your partner wont have sex with you (this is for males AND females) its natural to find it else where. Its not ok but the urge is natural and understandable. I hope that any woman in Becks’ situation can see that she is worth more than some mans opinion. She deserves someone who will stick by her and encourage her to get help for the sake of their relationship and her overall health and happiness. I dont think anyone’s worth needs to be determined by body fat percentage. Fat or thin you need to be loved for who you are and when you make a marital commitment to someone you have to stick it out. My hubby was in amazing shape when he got back from Iraq. A year later hes gained some weight and doesnt work out like he used to. He still PT’s but he would rather be at home than the gym. I see the same handsome in shape guy I met a year ago stepping off the bus. Today hes a little softer to cuddle with.
You are absolutely right about men expecting 10’s when they are barely 5’s themselves. Its a shame that women put so much stock into what some of these assholes have to say. I feel for any woman who has taken a hit to her self esteem because some guy thought that he was deserving of something better. I just want to say to those guys: good luck finding better. Sometimes the 10’s are not as great as you might think. Besides youre probably not worthy of the beautiful, wonderful woman you have at home anyway.
My ex was very immature about the whole thing. I knew that I had gained weight but he said “dont worry, youre still beautiful and I will always be here no matter what you look like”. So I think it was feeling a false security on my end that made it easy not to worry about losing the weight. Now I have a man who does love me for who I am. I also learned from the experience from the ex that its important to take care of myself.

  88. ! says:

What’s really sad, too, Firestarter, is that diva is clearly a person who lives her life in the shadow of other people’s opinions, never realizing that at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter. How empty it must be to live your life according to other people’s standards.

  89. Firestarter says:

Well said Cakes! Sorry I left the S off your name the first time! : )

  90. SageAdvice says:

I don’t find it attractive but that doesn’t make me a bad person, nor does it mean I hate fat people.

I am attracted to fit, healthy-looking people. Rolls of fat scream “unhealthy” to me, as they should. They should put up alarm bells. There are reasons why the majority of people do not find either end of the weight spectrum attractive (be it too thin or too fat)-it’s because it’s unhealthy either way.

My ex-boyfriend is a basketball player. We still hang out and such so I guess I’m spoiled on six pack abs. But my younger sister likes chubby dudes-she likes something soft to squish into.

Our tastes are radically different but neither is wrong and neither indicates any kind of hate.

Just because I don’t find fat rolls attractive does not mean I’m screaming from the rooftops that all fatties should just go jump off bridges.

  91. SageAdvice says:

And by the way, can we PLEASE stop with this “real” people nonsense?

A “real” body is not a fat or overweight one. All bodies that haven’t been plastic-surgeried to hell are real bodies.

A fairly slim person has a “real” body too.

I would say I’m on the slimmer side of average-I have a body type that allows me to eat fairly well and maintain a decent figure. I’m certainly not toned and skinny and I have natural F-sized boobs. But I am not overweight by any stretch of the imagination. Does that mean I don’t have a “real” body? Because I don’t look like these women?

Stop trying to make your fat selves feel better by tearing down normal sized people.

  92. Firestarter says:

@SageAdvice- I am far from fat, so please do not assume, because some people get sick of others constantly gong off on fat people, that we are fat. I do not need to come on here and brag about my shape to feel better about myself.

Not trying to pick a fight, but jeez, people today seem to not be allowed to express their opinions without being accused of being “fat” themselves. Ridiculous assumption to make.

And no one said that people have to find “fat” beautiful. I think the general sentiment is that beauty CAN come in all forms, and is in the eye of the beholder. I don’t get why everyone has to bash fat or thin people. It’s ridiculous!

  93. Scarlet Vixen says:

Several people have asked it, but I’d like to ask it again–Why not have “real” women in magazines? The average American woman is a size 12. But all we see are size 0 and size 20. I’m 5’10” and have been around a size 12 my entire adult life. Now, at a size 8, I look too skinny and am trying to regain the weight. Many of us just have body types that aren’t conducive to smaller-or larger-sizes. But, I have a friend who is constantly trying to gain weight. She eats like a horse! She simply has a fast metabolism than most. Not everyone can be a size 0–the huge majority of us aren’t. Why not celebrate the diversity of women?

Also, some of the pics are great, and beautiful. The women in the sweater, and the leopard print especially are nicely styled pics. But, some of them do seem to be styled intentionally to make the models look ‘chubbier’ than they are. Some of the clothing looks too small, etc. Even skinny models have to learn how to hide their ‘flaws’ or how to trick the camera into showing them as taller, slimmer, having a shapelier backside, etc. Why didn’t they crew do that in this pictorial?

  94. Larissa says:

omg, hating on fat people is so 5th grade!

seriously, get over your skinny arses!
And having that said, I am not even fat(been a few pounds overweight tho), but I find it extremely annoying when so called “thin” people make nasty comments like the one above, like if not having any fat would make them superior, at any level!

Have you people ever checked your VISCERAL fat to prove you´re really thin/skinny/fit/healthy?
    Highly doubtful!!!!!!

FAT is FAT and is just as bad, no matter if it´s stored between your internal organs and torso or in your pouch!

  95. ! says:

    @SageAdvice

What’s your point? I also find fit men (and women) to be attractive. I too, am not fat. Is my opinion more valid to you now? (BTW, the level of a person’s attractiveness does not determine the validity of their sentiments, on this issue or any others).

But despite the fact that I find “fit” people attractive, despite the fact that I’m not overweight, I can STILL tell the difference between genuine concern for a person’s health, and a snobby “you’re so unhealthy” attitude that seeks to use faux concern as a cover for a plain, stuck up crappy attitude towards overweight people. A belly roll does not make you “unhealthy”. In fact, my fit father just had a massive heart attack and was diagnosed with diabetes…meanwhile, my mother goes in for a check up at well over 100 lbs overweight, and there’s not a blessed thing wrong with her, not her blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure NOTHING is out of order. Just goes to show you, YOU HAVEN’T GOT IT ALL FIGURED OUT.

Unless you’re a person’s doctor you have NO idea if they’re healthy or not!

It is disgusting in ANY form to sum up a person’s worth based on their appearance! I wish some of you could hear yourselves! How would you like if someone summed you up as nothing more than a fat sack of genetic inevitability, negating everything about you that makes you who you are? Negating your talents, your efforts, your hard work, your personality…nope, you’re just a set of body parts! I bet you wouldn’t like it! So knock it off and stop doing it to other people!

  96. Sakota says:

I’m a size six, 125 pounds and I plan on staying that way. I have Type Two diabetes and heart disease in my family and I want to avoid that, mainly because it IS obesity related.

I am tired of how size fourteen to sixteen makes a ‘real’ woman while thinner women are taunted as promoting anorexia or bulimia. It’s stupid for a woman to throw up to look like a model, or for someone with fundamental problems to think of themselves as not to blame if they develop anorexia.

I wonder if half the reason models develop psychological problems is because they are bashed all the damn time by people for being the source of all eating disorders.

  97. Firestarter says:

    @!- Again, well said.

  98. Birdie says:

Wow… this thread has really deteriorated into “what’s your size? what’s your weight?”

WHO CARES? Opinions are valid no matter a persons weight or body type.

    FYI:

    I weigh 90 lbs and am a size 00.

I weigh 180 lbs and am a size 10, with Rock Hard Abs and a natural DD chest.

I’m the 600 lb virgin from TLC.

WHO CARES? Nobody has to give the lowdown on their weight and body type to feel their opinion is legitimate on an anonymous gossip site. Anyone could be lying, even Diva could be/probably is delusional.

The point is that woman’s fashion magazines by and large exclusively show photographs of women who are so thin, they are dying of starvation. Not cool.

People come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Beauty can be found in anyone. You know what I think is beautiful? Hilary Clinton, Michelle Obama, educated, intelligent, literate, beautiful, healthy women who spend their time doing good in the world. Lindsay Lohan is probably a size 0 and I think she is hideous.

The real problem is that our society focuses so harshly upon women’s exterior beauty as an indicator of their value. Diva is a perfect example of hateful ideologies at work in our society. She seems to believe that small people have the right to feel better about themselves, and demean heavier folks simply because they are heavier.

  99. ! says:

Oh yes, the poor poor models, let’s get worried about their frail psyches due to the thin-bashers and not, you know, being trotted out like a show pony and then thrown away like a piece of trash the minute they age. I’m sure its the taunting about eating disorders, not the immense pressure from the fashion industry and the disposable way in which they’re treated, being referred to as walking coat hangers and valued only for their appearance *eyeroll*.

Please. Ladies. If you are a fit size, can you not for one second consider your position of privilege as a reasonably attractive human being and let people who aren’t have their day? Is that so hard? Or is the temptation to whine “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful” just too hard to resist? Or is it the attention? Can you not bear it that all your hard work means nothing if fat people are considered attractive, too?

For the record, Sakota, you and I are similarly sized, though my health implications if I don’t keep it up are far worse than yours. But you don’t hear me whining and complaining. The odds aren’t stacked against me right now, so to piss and moan about the treatment of “skinny people” would seem self indulgent and downright disgusting. Keeping weight off might not be hard for some of you, but for those whom it is, trust me–they don’t need you to simper on about how tough it is to be fit! They’re hard enough on themselves at it is.

Not to mention, the sting of not being considered “real”, or being hated because you’re thin, does not at all compare to the demeaning behavior directed towards fat people on such a grand, pervasive scale. I doubt that you hear about contributing to eating disorders as much as a fat person is disparaged for their appearance. It doesn’t even come close.

And despite how proud you are of keeping your appearance, it does not make you any better than anyone else, fit or not.

Your strength does not make them weak.

  100. asiont says:

nice faces and that’s all. they don’t look healthy, with body like they will probably die of heart attack at the age of 35. and sorry, but I prefer skinny models.

  101. Firestarter says:

Not all “fat” people have heart attacks. Do a bit of reading about heart problems before you make blanket statements like that.

  102. Munkey says:

Hastumomo: Your post made me smile. Love your attitude and your willingness to embrace what you once disliked about yourself. Your guy is one lucky fella (which I’m sure he already knows). Cheers to you, sister!

!/Firestarter/Birdie: Thank you for your insightful and articulate comments. You’ve all provided a few bright spots in this increasingly detestable thread.

  103. moops says:

WAYYYY too much time spent analyzing and criticizing women’s bodies in general, if you ask me. The judgment here is no worse than the judgment levied at skinny models (i.e. – poor role models, unhealthy, eating disordered, coke-users, etc.). 104 comments on 4 strangers appearances? Who cares? I know some people are lauding these models for helping make average women accept their bodies and not be so self-loathing, but you know what would REALLY help us? Focusing on something else – anything else – than our looks, please.

  104. SageAdvice says:

I am neither skinny nor fat. I fall in the inbetween that seems to not exist to most people on these threads even though I would guess most people on these threads fall into that category.

Bigger people aren’t sexy or beautiful to me because they look unhealthy. I’m not saying definitively that they are, because I don’t know them. But nature gives us clues about things by sight to indicate certain things.

If you can see someone’s bones sticking out, they are likely unhealthy.

If you can’t fit into one seat on the bus, you are probably unhealthy.

Not for sure, of course, because everyone is different.

  105. Emily says:

“If you can see someone’s bones sticking out, they are likely unhealthy.

If you can’t fit into one seat on the bus, you are probably unhealthy.”

Nice way of putting it, I like it! As for these models, all I’m going to say is, fuck me they’re hot!

  106. djukagal says:

i don’t think you can say those women aren’t beautiful. i don’t personally find the rolls of fat appealing, but i don’t think these women are outrageously fat. plump. that sounds good, doesn’t it? we need more plump.

the styling in the group shot is unflattering, and possibly insulting to some of the models. that denim vest that stops an unfortunate distance from the top of the jeans? no. he could easily have made them look gorgeous.

by the way–i am skinny. not everyone likes skinny, either–and that’s ok.

  107. Ana says:

The fourth picture of the completely naked woman…..WOW she is gorgeous!

I’m not a big fan of the styling, but I like the pictures.

  108. justathought says:

real women? come on….if they can photo shop skinny into a picture, they can photo shop tubby into one too.

  109. oh hey says:

For all those who think plus size (i.e., fat) equals ugly. The world has plenty of skinny ugly people too, some of of them are even featured on celebrity gossip sites, some might even be commenting from behind the computer.

  110. SageAdvice says:

oh hey: Just because there are ugly skinny people in this world does not mean there are no ugly fat people.

Besides, I wouldn’t have a problem with this spread if they had put the models in flattering clothes. My sibling and I were just discussing it and that gray swimsuit looks hideous on that model because it doesn’t fit and she’s in a terrible pose that creates rolls where she probably doesn’t have them just standing up or in other poses. It’s like the photographer told her to look as fat as possible.

Cosmo uses larger models in some of their photo essays and they even used that model with the brown hair (forget her name) in a bathing suit pictorial and she looked amazing. Why? Because all of the poses and bathing suits were flattering. Why on earth would they get a bunch of larger models and put them in unflattering clothes and poses?

  111. MooMooMooMooMoo says:

    YOUUU’RE THE ONE FOR ME
    FATTY
you’re the one i really really luhv

    You’re the one for me-ahey

I need to lose 8kg becos i can’t have fat sex either, it’s no fun. I want to have hot, toned, sexy sex!

  112. GatsbyGal says:

This was obviously a photographer who had absolutely no experience photographing plus-size women. All the weird contorted moves that look good with skinny chicks don’t exactly translate well when curves are added to the equation.

Seriously, that last photo, the gray little outfit one? WTF is that? WTF is that outfit and WTF is that pose? That’s not attractive. And neither is the photo of the woman in the black corset with her arms just kinda stickin’ out. That’s a lame photo. Surely there must have been better ones to pick from. I am not impressed. As a big girl myself, I’d love to get behind the camera for a shoot like this and really amp up the cute factor with a dash of pure sexy. Because really now…none of these girls are smiling! Chubby girls are cute, let them be cute!

  113. viper says:

It’s not a question of what looks appealing. This just proves anybody can look great after a good PS session.

  114. Jane Doe says:

    @Diva :

It’s pretty ridiculous for you to make the sweeping generalization that “Being thin requires a tremendous amount of discipline that the average person doesn’t have.” Maybe YOUR particular metabolism requires you to work hard to maintain your size zero, but that’s not necessarily the case for others. Moreover, people with slower metabolisms than you can be just as disciplined as you and not achieve the same results.

I am 5’0, 93 lbs, with 34-24-34 measurements, but I can assure you that this is not “quite an accomplishment” as you would label it. I don’t watch what I eat and I haven’t exercised since high school (nearly a decade ago). For some people such as myself, this type of figure has more to do with having a naturally fast metabolism than having the discipline to follow a healthy diet/exercise routine. My heavier, fuller-figured friends who regularly exercise and eat healthy are the ones who earn my respect for the constant effort they put into following a healthy lifestyle, and they’re the ones who should feel accomplished, not me. In all honesty, whether I weighed 93 lbs or 193 lbs, I doubt I could ever muster up that kind of discipline.

In short, when it comes to diet and exercise, “your mileage may vary.” Individual variations in metabolism, age, and medical history produce a range of results. Being a size zero does not necessarily reflect hard work and discipline, nor does being a size 12 necessarily reflect a LACK of these qualities.

wow, these women are hot. I would make love to each and every one of them for all night long.
and fsck all the people who are acting like little nazi boyscouts trying to impose their twisted standards on everyone else (standards based on ridiculously loose and blurred arguments about health).
vegetarians, mac users, health freaks, kobe fans etc… mind your own business and let other people decide for themselves.

  117. ligeia says:

they look good. though couple of them are wearing unflattering /ill fitting clothes which makes their bodies look weird. stylists should have tried to accentuate their curves instead of making them squeeze into something meant to be worn by someone with no hips.

  118. crash2GO2 says:

Becks, I’m sorry you feel badly about yourself. But you can hardly blame everyone else for your marital troubles because you made the decision to refuse to have (as you put it) ‘fat sex’ with your husband.

    Best wishes to you~

  119. WC says:

Umm… on another note. Does anyone know where to get that sweater one of the women is wearing? It’s pretty and looks cozy. It will look great with the new pair of jeans I received for Christmas. 🙂

  120. jane says:

These pictures look so fake like their heads were just cut and pasted on real plus sized women. I don’t know many people with big bodies and perfect, skinny jawlines.

I’m sick of the too thin debate in the fashion industry. Why don’t they focus more on the blatent agism that exists. I find it even more offensive as a female that most models are younger than 25 than that they are thin. You can always lose the weight by working out and eating less if you are fat, but you can’t change your age. I’d love to see more thirty, forty and fifty year old models in fashion spreads. After all, people are living longer and looking younger these days. Advertising should reflect that.

These women are beautiful, sexy, and a real man loves women built like them, i know the news people and fashion people tell me i like skinny little girl type figures but if they ever asked anyone they would tell you, these girls are grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreatttttttttttt

I think they are gorgeous. And just as fierce as the skinny bitches!

And this is closer to what most of us look like anyway, so being able to mimic the fashions would be easier. (Disclaimer: Obviously with shirts and pants on at the same time!)

And all of you complaining about the “rolls” and “love handles” better have 2% body fat, or you can promptly shut the f#$% up.
