Princess Caroline defends violent husband in court

National Day's celebrations - Monaco

Last week, we brought you an interesting story about Princess Caroline of Monaco and her husband Prince Ernst August of Hanover. Apparently, their marriage problems (long rumored) are for real, as Ernst August was caught over the holidays vacationing with some mystery woman everyone assumes is his mistress, or one of his mistresses. There were photographs of Ernst and the woman, but despite the evidence, Princess Caroline has not said anything publicly about Ernst or her marriage. Until now! One of the minor points in last week’s story was that Princess Caroline was scheduled to be a witness in the re-trial appeal case of Ernst attacking a German club owner. Now, stories about Ernst attacking various people, from Germany to Kenya, abound. He’s been accused of assaulting multiple people, sometimes with provocation, sometimes not. Anyway, this case stems from a 2004 incident, and Prince Ernst has already been found guilty of assault once – but that was before Princess Caroline spoke up in his defense:

With rumors swirling about the possible status of her marriage, Princess Caroline of Monaco dealt with her husband, Prince Ernst August of Hanover, in a German courtroom on Wednesday – and spoke up in his defense.

Barely a week after scandalous photos of Ernst August cavorting with another woman while on Christmas vacation in Thailand were published in Germany and France, the princess took the witness stand, where her appearance was considered key to Ernst August’s appeal of his 2004 conviction for assault of Josef Brunlehner, owner of a disco near the prince’s vacation home in Kenya.

At the time, the prince was convicted of hitting Brunlehner with a hard object because of Ernst August’s displeasure with the disco’s nightly music and light shows. Found guilty, Ernst August was fined more than $600,000 and charged with causing serious bodily harm.

The new case, with Princess Caroline’s eyewitness testimony, is an attempt to reduce the severity of the conviction to a simple assault charge.

Confirming her husband’s testimony, Princess Caroline told the court, “I observed that my husband slapped Josef Brunlehner twice with his hand flat and that he said, ‘One for the music and one for the light,’ ” reports ORF Television.

Princess Caroline, 52, was originally scheduled to testify in November but canceled due to other obligations. Her Wednesday appearance was negotiated for several months and dependent upon the court’s fulfilling certain security requests.

Still, the timing of her court date proved ticklish: Last Thursday, Germany’s Bunte and France’s Paris Match magazines published pictures of Ernst August embracing and kissing a mystery woman in a skimpy zebra bikini on a beach in Thailand.

On Friday, Germany’s mass-circulation newspaper Bild published a second and more explicit series of photos, while additional coverage surfaced on Sunday.

The couple, who are due to mark their 11th wedding anniversary this month, have not been seen in public together in six months – and that did not change on Wednesday. Not required to be present for the testimony, Ernst August was not in the courtroom for Caroline’s appearance.

[From People]

What the hell is Princess Caroline thinking? Just leave him, for goodness sake. He’s violent, he’s an alcoholic, he’s cheating on you. Enough said.

On the other Princess Caroline post, some of you were talking about Monaco succession and Caroline’s son Andrea Casiraghi, her oldest child, and her first child from her second marriage. From what I understand of Monaco’s succession, as it stands right now, Prince Albert will pass the throne of Monaco directly to Caroline’s son Andrea. Whatever male heirs Prince Albert might have (and I think he has several) do not have any claim because they were not born in wedlock, and from what I’ve seen of Prince Albert, I really don’t think he’s going to rush out and get married just to provide a legitimate heir. I honestly think Prince Albert wants Andrea to take the throne – and that is definitely what Princess Caroline wants for her son too.

That’s just sad. Her life has not been easy.

Any woman should think long and hard before kissing or sleeping with a white man that vacations in Thailand.

  2. QB says:

Don’t feel sorry for her at all , she stabbed a friend in the back for piece of ………Gift.

Why don’t you use a more recent picture of Andrea , he looks scarry.

I don’t believe Andrea is going to take the throne at the beggining that was a real possibily but now he is just another party boy , who lives from party to the beach chain smoking with his girlfriend.

I think if Prince Albert does not get marry to his girlfriend of a couple of years Charlene Wittstock and haves an heir , then Pierre the youngest son of Caroline is going to take the throne , he has a better image this day than his brother.

This are more recent pictures of Andrea than the ones you are using , the ones you are using are from several years ago .

    This are only from 2008

Prince Ernst is a pig, however, a rich pig. It was mentioned in the French press years ago that Caroline married him for his money and status, as he is much richer than the royal family of Monaco. They said since Caroline did not own a castle of her own, the prospect of having her own castles through Ernst appealed to her greatly. While she does come from royalty, Ernst of Hanover is much wealthier. She was eager for the prestige that came from becoming his wife.

    Ick!

  4. karma says:

Yikes!! She is younger than me, but I look so much better; and I am much poorer. So much for the good life.

  5. QB says:

I think his son now own the castles , or at least they owned one of the biggest one since they had to have a big garage sale to pay the bills for the upkeep.

  6. Sumodo says:

@karma–I’ll join you in that sentiment. The years have not been kind to Caroline, who was always a natural beauty. Granted, it’s admirable that she hasn’t had anything done, if only a tiny tweak, but I agree. You can be older and poorer and look better than Caroline. I credit my Maltese, Shecky Greene, for keeping me young.

  7. danielle says:

She stayed with a guy who, by her own admission, slapped someone because he didn’t like the lights or music being played! There is not enough money for that!

  8. Pete says:

It’s not the money. It’s the title. She’s finally part of a royal house, instead of a mere principality.

  9. tfb says:

Some of you are nuts… Caroline is beautiful and her looks are really ageless. I’m impressed with her resources she has stayed away from cosmetic surgery.

Hanover is in Germany right? How has Ernst stayed rich? I didn’t think Germany paid for their aristocracy anymore.

  10. QB says:

@tfb , they don’t pay or recognize royalty but all of Royals from Germany are loaded like the Turn and Taxis Jewelry , Castles , forest and antiques. But the inheritance taxes in Germany are crazy so they sell a lot of their Heirlooms and invest I guess , to pay them and the upkeep of those castle is not cheap.

I know for a fact that Prince Ernst sons sold about 20,000 objects antiques and what nots to pay the bills.

  11. JohnnieR says:

Yeah! More Grimaldi dirt. Love it!

Personally, while I think Caroline was one of Europe’s greatest beauties in her 20’s and 30’s, I have to concur with those who state she has not exactly aged with ‘Grace’. That said, me thinks she’s gone from ‘beautiful’ to ‘handsome’ – in a matronly sense.

Also, it is not true that Ernst is wealthier than Caroline. Rainier amassed a huge fortune (estimated to be around US$4.5 billion at the time of his death in 2005)in which Caroline and Albert inherited the lion’s share – poor Stephie inherited (I believe) only US$17 million – as Rainier did not trust her (at the time) re her very low-life relationships and friendships.

Andrea – in my opinion – is lookin’ pretty rough around the edges these days – too much partying, smoking, and drinking. He’s painfully thin. I also am GUESSING that he’s perhaps not exactly up to snuff in regards to taking over the Grimaldi throne. But then again, I’m just conjecturing here.

HA HA …This Kenyan story is famous ha ha among the Kenyan Cowboys…
VERY surprised to read it here on this gossip site. lol

    Good one Kaiser…

Anyway, what really occured was that a new German bought a house/land/etc and moved to a certian place(cant name it due to privacy of the ppl who live there etc) and was having loud parties with laser lights for 4 nights straight.

To put it in context, its like your neighbour having a loud party where the sound is over 100decibels in your own bedroom and laser lights showing through the curtains.

Anyway, this certain private place is known for being quite. No Jet Ski, No Big noise etc.especially since the noise travels very fast in that area.
Its not like Ibiza…its very tranquille with mostly old and wealthy ppl living there.

Anyway, this German Party was creating noise for days and everyone told him to keep the noise down but he didnt. He was rude and was inpolite to everywhere who spoke to him. Even the King/Cheif of the area had a word and nothing worked. This man thought he had enough money to do what he liked in Africa.

However, the fool had no clue who his neighbours are bcos this place is like Monaco in terms of weaith but very low key.

So, everyone in this place was pissed off and the …then one of the residents decided to do something about it.

Then,The Prince got pissed off due to lack of sleep and went down to slap the BIATCH UP.

    That is what occured. FACT.

  13. Victoria says:

Remember the Rainer title was made up; Ernst has the real “royal blood” and that’s important in these circles.

    Didn’t Caroline & Ernst have a child?

Why wouldn’t Albert marry already & have an heir? That’s the bigger question. Anyone know why he has illegitimate children all over the world but does not want a woman to share his “royal” title?

  14. Alana says:

We Europeans love to drink so, I do not see it so black/white as some of you do.

Scandi’s are permenantly drunk and they drink Vodka straight even in the sauna.

However, imo Prince Ernst is like a little boy with a platinum credit card.
Prince Ernst is connected to the British Royal family hence he is connected to all the Royal households. Where, the Monaco’s historically are really a bunch of pirates who got a piece of Island and ruled it with an iron fist.

Also, Prince Albert is already married to a South African Swimmer/former Olympian. There needs to be some formal blah de blah process before she is given a title.

Prince Albert is already the 32nd Ruler of Monaco. So,NO he is not passing it to Andrea. Although, the Albert is very close to his Carolines kids. He is like the 2nd Dad some how…

For Albert to become the King of Monaco there is some long process that could take up to 18months before he is name the King of Monaco.

These things are not automatic especially in Europe.

We have traditions that have to be maintained

  15. Alana says:

    @Victoria you are totally right.

(Sorry English is my 3rd Lang so pls forgive the typo’s)

Prince Albert has a few kids out of web lock. 2 formally known to the Press.

One is American and the other is half African.

Prince Albert has already got the lawyers in and documents have been added to Monaco’s law system that those kids born outside wed lock will never have claim to the house of Grimaldi. Those kids have Trust funds so they should not have any worries.

Actually, IMO Prince Albert and Prince Ernst are not so bad in comparison to other Royals.

I love these Royal Gossip stories though ha ha

If anyone has some Danish or Dutch Royal Gossip.

I heard 2 of the Royal Princes are gay and they paint Copenhagen right but thats about it. I think all of Copenhagen know this and no one really cares

    Please spill lol

  16. Birdie says:

In my opinion, Caroline probably stays with him because she hasn’t found another man yet. Also the divorce could be damaging and cost quite a bit.

Albert won’t have a legitimate heir, he’s already comfortably middle aged what does he want to do with raising a child for 20+ years, grooming them to take over the throne. His sister Caroline has a much more respectable reputation and he is probably closer to her children than to any of his own illegitimate ones.

  17. Andrea says:

Alana: There is no such thing as “king of Monaco.” Monaco is a principality so the ruler is the sovereign prince of Monaco.

Also I just don’t see Albert getting married at all. And why can’t the throne pass onto Caroline if she survives him?

Victoria: the royal titles of Monaco were not made up. They were recognized centuries ago by some Spanish king.

  18. Correction says:

There is no such thing as a king of Monaco. It’s a Principality so the title of Sovereign Prince is as high as you can go, which Prince Albert has, and he does a good job.

He is not married to anyone. The whole Charlene Wittstock thing has been over for awhile, she just didn’t cut it as potential princess. Prince Albert just needs to make the end official. He’s made it clear to the world he has no plans to marry her.

He has 2 children already, so he is in no hurry. Prince Rainer changed the law so that Caroline’s kids can take over if something happened to Prince Albert.

It would be nice to see Prince Albert or Princess Caroline find someone respectable to be at their side and follow in their mother Princess Grace’s footsteps.

But on the other side of the coin, their poor choice of public companions is what has kept the European tabloids in business.

I wish the Monaco royal family well

  19. Kathie says:

Bravo Alana I understood you perfectly. Thank you for a European slant on this you know more about the culture. Good for you having a second language, my “second language” is Appalachian slang with some kitchen Spanish thrown in lol!

  20. Lisa says:

@Andrea: Princess Caroline is indeed the heiress to the throne after her brother Prince Albert.
Her son Andrea Casiraghi is currently the second in the line.

@tfb: yes, Hannover is in Germany. But it might be interesting to you that his correct name is:
Prince of Hanover, Prince of Great Britain and Ireland – and that he was in the line of succession to the British throne… until his marriage to Caroline of Monaco. He was excluded because she is Roman Catholic.

    Greetings from Europe!
    Lisa
