Jessica Biel whines about how there is “no material” in Hollywood

bielcover

Jessica Biel is the cover girl for the February issue of Vogue Magazine, and while I think the cover shot is lovely, the other photos inside the magazine are… not good. Like, how would you style Jessica Biel if you got the chance? I would keep her makeup very simple and light, and put her in softer, feminine clothes that would give her a chance to look less masculine. But Vogue slapped on some too-dark lipstick and tried to make her look tomboy-ish in some of these photos, which isn’t such a stretch. It’s so much of a “not a stretch” I was looking for Biel’s Adam’s apple. The other word that keeps bouncing around my head is “horsey”. Jessica comes across as very horsey, like Julia Roberts or Sarah Jessica Parker, but not in a good way. Anyway, the Vogue slideshow is here, and the full Vogue interview is here. Now, for some of the highlights:

On her parents: “They are major outdoor people,” she says. “They rafted the Grand Canyon when they were in their 20s. They are an incredible couple.” Her father, Jon, worked for GE for many years and ran his own business consultancy in Boulder. “He is extremely motivated and ambitious,” she says. “I get those qualities from him.”

About her posing half-naked on Gear to get out of her Seventh Heaven contract: “I really wanted to go to college, and it all kind of happened at the same time. I did this photo shoot; the photo shoot came out; it was terribly embarrassing. I had to apologize to everybody, including my parents. It was a big learning experience: learning how to have boundaries and how to say no.”

Her empathy for young girls: “I have this overwhelming motherly feeling toward them. Just do what you gotta do, girls! Hold it together! I wish everyone would just leave them alone.”

Her Hollywood complaints: “The last year in this business has been harsh,” says Biel. “There’s no material. Nobody wants to make dramas. And that’s what we all want to do.” What is getting produced, she says, are “commercial movies—horror movies, big romantic comedies, and action movies. Those can be great, but you don’t want to do only those kinds of films. You can’t live on éclairs alone. You have to have a spinach salad every now and again.”

On her new film Valentine‘s Day: “I really get to play crazy,” she says gleefully. “A girl who has hit the wall with wanting to find a man. And I get to do some broad comedy; it’s a little Lucille Ball-esque.”

On her style: “I like really überfeminine, classic-looking things mixed with something rougher around the edges. I’ve been looking at Rihanna a lot, checking her out. She’s got something going on that I am sort of craving a little bit.”

On the breakup rumors between her and Justin Timberlake: “It’s definitely been weird and sort of bizarre to deal with. But you have to have a sense of humor about the whole thing. Honestly, I look at a magazine and they know more than I do.” Last night at dinner I brought it up and was met with steely resolve. “I don’t want to talk about it,” she said. “I don’t feel the need to clear anything up. It’s the most precious thing that I have in my life, and I care about it so much that I don’t care about what anyone says or thinks. I have just not addressed it in any real way, and I’m not going to. It’s mine. And I really like that about it.”

[From Vogue]

Okay, so the interview wasn’t terrible. It wasn’t like some of Jessica’s infamous interviews, where she waxes rhapsodically about her beauty or tries to put her name together with “Oscar”. But there’s still a whiff of the self-absorbed, delusional girl there too, especially when she won’t stop bitching about how there is “no material”. Uh, there is material, Jessica, they just aren’t hiring you. Oh, and does anyone else think she was comparing herself to Lucille Ball?

    this cover is so 90s!

  2. audrey says:

    i was thinking 70’s.

  3. Firestarter says:

There is no material……for her! She is a terrible actress.

  4. kermit says:

I was thinking the other night how so many movies on HBO/SHO etc. are action or too many guns or overall violence, comedies, and so forth. That I’d like to see more dramas, especially delving into the depths and challenges of relationships. Hollywood goes for what sells and dramas sell less. Pics, besides the photoshopping, look good to me. I don’t see a problem here with what she’s saying.

  5. BitterBetty says:

    BABOON.

  6. Trillion says:

“No material” last year? She’s seriously out of touch.

  7. lucy2 says:

I was thinking 70s too. The cover is pretty, but very dated. The inside photos are not good, and normally I think she’s fairly pretty.

I know the film industry is a bit tight right now, but someday when it’s not, Jessica is still going to have trouble finding roles. She’s not that great an actress, her resume is pretty weak, and she doesn’t seem to be well liked.

  8. LolaBella says:

What’s with all of the denim on that cover shot??!

That cover pic is perhaps one of the best pics of Jessica I have ever seen. It still doesn’t make me like her, though.

I love how they title her Interview ‘The Refreshingly Real Jessica Biel’ and then she says things like this:

“There’s no material. Nobody wants to make dramas. And that’s what we all want to do.” What is getting produced, she says, are “commercial movies—horror movies, big romantic comedies, and action movies. Those can be great, but you don’t want to do only those kinds of films. You can’t live on éclairs alone. You have to have a spinach salad every now and again.”

It’s statements like those that makes no one want to hire you to display your ‘craft’, Jessica. Way to alienate the hand that can feed you ‘spinach salads AND eclairs’. 🙄

  9. Mouse says:

Lol at her checking out Rihanna. She and JT have at least one thing in common. 😉

  10. Anabella says:

“I’ve been looking at Rihanna a lot, checking her out. She’s got something going on that I am sort of craving a little bit.”
    Wow! Justin’s EXACT same thoughts.

  11. Oi says:

    Shania? Is that you?

  12. Kaboom says:

Wow that one picture really makes her nose look huge.

  13. bite me says:

    what is a jessica biel?

  14. Sigh. says:

    “There’s no material.”

I LOOOVE how when an actor SUCKS, it’s the material’s fault, but if they are receive praise, RARELY do they thank the (screen)writer.

There’s material (admittedly, not much of it), but it wouldn’t trickle down to the likes of her anyway.

  15. ,,,, says:

The Rihanna name drop is priceless.

  16. blurg says:

I’m not trying to sound mean, but I find jessica biel almost unbearable to look at. Something is just wrong with her face. I have no idea what she did to it. Everytime I see a picture of her I think “omg–what has evangeline lilly done to herself!?” And then I realize, “oh, it’s just jessica biel trying really hard.”

  17. snapdragon says:

bitter betty – i am laughing my ass off! i have been trying to think of what she reminds me of, and you’re right – she looks like a baboon.

  18. Lenore says:

Yeah, telling the whole world you want to emulate the pop star your other half is supposedly banging on the side? Not a smart move. Why not just do an interview sobbing, “What’s she got that I haven’t, and how do I get it?”

  19. JadedJudy says:

What does her posing near naked have to do with wanting to go to college?

  20. QB says:

Jessica Biel is not a dramatic actress , there is no material for her because she is usually cast like the Hot girl next door and unfortunately there are way hotter ,prettier girls out there , that know when to shut up

She and Megan Fox are in the same train horrible actress, that only get cast as the hot girl but they complain about it all the time and about how hollywood haves no material and the directors are bad.

Didn’t Jessica said that her real love was music and made a show in one of the late night show saying how she would love to sing?? What happen to her music career or is the same as Scarlett Johanson?

  21. Ana says:

She had to appologize to her parents? I thought her father was at the shoot for the Gear spread. She was 17 years old…she needed permission.

  22. vale says:

Not to be a pain in the grammatical ass, but I have a question:
is it correct to say “I GET those qualities from him” ??

  23. Alarmjaguar says:

I love JB, can’t say why, but I didn’t find her statements that bad and I think she’s lovely…

admittedly, I hate the interior pictures — why so much make up?!

  24. Ally says:

I gotta swim against the tide here, and say I thought she was very good in “Easy Virtue”. I expected her to ruin it, and instead she played it very well: like a believable adult woman of that age (who races cars). I found her credible and interesting. She gave the character depth and dignity, when it would have been easy to go all dizzy blonde in the portrayal.

I have to say, too, that I agree with her about the lack of range of movie options. Besides the types she cited, there are also dramas, but they seem to be way at the other end of the spectrum… over-the-top depressing and bleak. E.g. The name Rufus Sewell conned me into ordering “Downloading Nancy” the other day on pay-per-view, and it was one of the most horrendous things I’ve ever seen: a fictionalized snuff film, glorying in the dank and depressing + essentially saying abused women who get murdered are suicidal idiots asking for it.

Between acting in that type of sh%te or action movies/formulaic rom-coms, I don’t blame Jessica Biel for staying home and/or complaining.

  25. LizzieB says:

Flashback to the Shania Twain albam cover in the 90’s.

  26. javelin says:

Oh sweet jujus I love that photo with the goat! Me and Jess could be awesomely bad together in a suspenseful soap opera about two curious farm-hands and their deviant ways.

  27. Shush says:

Why certain actors are singled out for ridicule for no apparent reason is beyond me. Jessica Biel is beautiful, athletic, talented – can act well and has a lovely voice. I totally agree with her that there are very few scripts that have depth and explore the complexities of life and relationships. Most Hollywood projects are designed solely to make money – all glitz and no substance. She is spot on.

  28. california angel says:

When a goat outshines you in a picture, you might want to re-consider your career.

  29. ien says:

i absolutely hate/abhor/loathe that cover. so. much.
    it looks so dated.

& what in the world is anna thinking???
what has jessica biel done to warrant a Vogue cover?

  30. mike says:

Kaiser, Jessica is absolutely, 100% right about Hollywood. There is no good material for women. There hasn’t been for years. It is truly sad when the 1940’s had better roles for women than today. The roles for women in major Hollywood films today are just abysmal. Most of the time, they just want a pretty head that fits nicely into a dress. Acting optional.

That said, I also agree with you, Kaiser. Jessica is delusional. If there were good materials in Hollywood, does she really think she’d actually get the call? Maybe in an open audition, but ain’t nobody’s gonna think of her first (or second or third) in any role that requires major acting chops.

  31. crash2GO2 says:

I admit, I’ve never seen her act. But she is gorgeous. I don’t understand the hate in regards to her.

  32. blinditemreader says:

Those eyebrows are freaking me out.

  33. pebbles says:

yeah, I can’t see Biel as playing lead in “Sophie’s Choice” – just shut your mouth, little one, and keep playing what brings in the bank. You’re not Meryl Streep, and never will be.

  34. littledebbie says:

Even with makeup, she still is fugly. Who cares about good material? She sucks as an actress anyway.

  35. Raven says:

As far as the self-absorbed part, that would apply to just about anyone in Hollywood.

As far as the college thing, I’m confused. It seemed like she was implying that after the photo shoot, she couldn’t go to college, but I don’t understand why that is. Seems like if she had wanted to go, she could have gone. You can go a semester at a time if you need to and take off for work. I suspect that college wasn’t actually part of her agenda. I hate to give in to the image of her, but she doesn’t really seem like college material.

  36. Rae says:

That makeup artist should be executed at dawn! She may be full of herself, but she is very pretty, and she lookds horrible in those pictures!

  37. Cinderella says:

She just digs it deeper, doesn’t she.

  38. Rory says:

Jessica is not the best actress in her age group. She calls the Papz even when she is drinking water. She is a horrible actress with a strong air of Leso. Everyone knows she a beard for Justin so she can tell Vogue anything she likes everyone knows the truth.

She only got this Vogue front page cos Anna’s sells are dropping and Jessica is dating Justin Timbersnake.

Jessica has not led a movie or won an oscar or a golden globe. In the bigger picture she is a nobody in Hollywood.

  39. Lauram says:

I think with the college thing she means that she wanted out of her 7th Heaven contract to get a degree, so she agreed to a risqué photoshoot to demolish her squeaky-clean image, all-american-girl image from the show.

Why she was embarrassed afterwards, who knows. But she was pretty young at the time.

I’ll give her credit, a chicken pooped on her shoulder during this photoshoot, but she just laughed it off and was quite sweet about the whole thing-

  40. Leek says:

I find her Canadian tuxedo extremely offensive. I will not offer her even a cameo in my drama I am currently writing.

  41. NicoleB says:

Why is she on the cover of VOGUE!!!! what has she done to warrant a VOGUE cover???…..NOTHING

  42. Michelle says:

I think this is one of Hollywood’s prettiest actresses – a true natural beauty. But the fact is she’s a mediocre actress, and she’s not getting better. Whenever she complains about roles or scripts, she reminds us that she’s a mediocre actress and makes herself look foolish. Stop, Jessica. You are really, really pretty.

  43. Michelle says:

Ladies, this woman is undeniably pretty. Calling her an ugly animal makes you look jealous, petty, and ugly. Careful, mean girls.

  44. Lauren says:

Refreshingly real?? She has had at least a nose job & her lips are puffed up artificially. Posing with a billygoat doesn’t qualify Jessica as real!

  45. Codzilla says:

Yeah, I’m confused about the college debacle, too. So was the institution of her choice so horrified by the photo shoot that they refused her application? Did she apologize to them, too? I hope the school in question was able to find the strength to keep its doors open despite this devastating turn of events.

  46. Mairead says:

The cover and one of the inside shots are definitely bringing back the 70s. I’m not saying that’s a good thing.

And I too love the one with the goat, I think she looks great in it and is giving off a bit of attitude, for a change.

Mike, there are a couple of differences between the Studio System then and now. Although the studios were patriarchal in the extreme, a huge number, if not a majority of screenwriters were women.
Dramas and comedies which interested women were also given more credence as they were seen as a key demographic. Not just the single 18-35 year old who rules the roost nowadays. And perhaps, because a studio invested a lot of money in developing some of its stars, like Joan Crawford, Bette Midler, Rita Hayworth, Judy Garland, Betty Grable Rosalind Russell etc. it paid to give them better scripts. Plus, in the 1940s, so many young actors were being shipped off to serve, there was more incentive for films like “Mildred Pierce” “Now Voyager” or even “The Women”

  47. Essie says:

    Where do I begin??

Nobody in Hollywood even thinks about Jessica Biel when they cast a movie. She can’t act and her personality is as unattractive as she is. She will be in “A-Team” as the “sexy girl” but that’s probably because her rate is so cheap. That is the kind of movie she gets and she should be happy about that.

There are plenty of good actresses who do “drama” and these actresses have fans who pay to see them. Jessica will never be an actress of that caliber, no matter how hard she tries.

She needs to get a TV series and work her butt off to do well in it and then perhaps she will get noticed by movie people. She also needs to keep her mouth shut.

I also want to point out that the amount of people who buy Vogue from newstands has gone down dramatically in the past couple of years. In my opinion, the main reason is because of the practically unknown women they put on the cover. I mean, who in their right mind would pick up a magazine and pay $4.00 for it because Jessica Biel is on the cover?? She has no fans. What in the world is Anna thinking? She has lost her touch, Vogue is in the toilet and Anna should be fired!! Seriously!!

  48. CB Rawks says:

She has my eyes and eyebrows! Tha bitch! I need the number of Heidi Montag’s surgeon.

  49. kimberly says:

    total 70’s era covershot

if overalls make a comeback I plan on throwing blackberries at the people who follow that “trend” just so I can stain them and they can’t wear them.

JessBiel has not improved on her acting. She’s as good as she’s gonna get, and isn’t good enough to be in dramas, comedies, romance movies, or epic.

I say should should really just do pixar and cartoon voice-overs, I know it’s a stretch, but that’s all she’s capable of.

  50. gg says:

Her face is a nice face, but it only has one expression. She doesn’t seem very versatile. I’ve never seen her act but her pictures bore me to tears.

  51. Solveig says:

    She has beautiful eyes.
She has cheekbones most of us would like to have.
    She has quiet nice lips.
    She has a cute nose.
But taken as a whole her face is really odd looking and not exactly beautiful.

  52. Tess says:

    I’m mystified. I think she’s beautiful.

  53. mr hate says:

She cannot act. She needs to get a grip. She needs to do porn. Plenty of material there.

  54. la chica says:

agree with 41. she has no business on Vogue. Justin has serious clout. not even Posh has managed to appear on Vogue but Butchy Biel has. lol.

  55. Kat says:

    BLEEEEEERGHHHHHHH.

  56. Team Coco says:

Justin Timerlake dating Cameron Diaz made sense to me as a couple. But something about Justin dating Jessica Biel seems so wrong. It feels forced without the right chemistry or something. Have you ever looked at a couple and just knew they were wrong for each other? Thats how I feel about JT and Jessica Biel. Oh, and I don’t think she’s attractive either. There’s something off about her coloring. She always looks so washed out. Like the color of Golum.

  57. Annabelle says:

Hmmm. She needs to adapt. If eclairs are the only thing being served you can either eat eclairs or you can starve. You can’t sit around sulking that there is no spinach and then expect people to share their eclair with you when you finally realize that that’s all your gonna get. you know?

  58. singerinwhite says:

I’ve come to a long-time conclusion about her.

Other than the fact that she’s a pretentious, self absorbed, whiny little thing – Jessica doesn’t translate well in movies. I’m just going to skip over the fact that she can’t act (She did well in Easy Virtue because she was around COLIN FIRTH- he was her gift from the heavens.Him and KST) and give a guess where I think she might do better in.

A CSI type of show with longevity.

If it means getting her on one of the CSIs, sure. Her high cheekbones seem to not really give her period pieces – which is often where the drama is. Easy Virtue is the exception. I’d love to see her back on TV with a good, fresh, show and a character that goes through the gritty drama that she apparently is craving.

Then again – it could just be that she can’t genuinely act, but I’m trying to see the positive side of things here. JBiel’s problem could be that she doesn’t translate on the silver screen.

  59. CC says:

She has really small eyes, wide mouth, weird too much PS looking nose, but I think that’s her natural nose unfotunately. Her personality and narcissim is one of the worst In H’ Wood amongst her peers. She’s not only narcissitic but incredibly delusional. She’s slightly above average looking at best. The majority of comments reflect that opinion of her, except maybe the one or two probably written by her or her publicist. lol. Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis,Scarlett Johansson, etc..hell, even plastic looking Megan Fox are way prettier than Biel.
And, I’m not being mean or jealous. I just like stating facts as much as possible.

  60. Dhavy says:

    Fugly!!!!!

The only nice thing about her is her body. She’s is just as delusional as Jessica Alba. Honey get real, you’re blah like the color beige. She can’t act and the only reason she’s around is because of her bf

  61. CC says:

    Exactly.

  62. J says:

    Yes, she is right.

And people like her is the reason why Hollywood has no materials.

  63. Jazz says:

That dark lipstick with the blue dress makes her look harsh. And what’s with the baggy overalls and the goat? Cute goat though. Her, not so much.

  64. asiont says:

    blah blah blah

  65. QB says:

American Vogue sucks , Nippo, Italy and French Vogue are better and more creative unlike the American one that put a bunch of stupid celebrity on their covers , is about fashion and not celebrities.

  66. b1744624 says:

Anna has gone completely crazy!!!! Who will buy this crap?? American Vogue has sucked for a LONG time. But Jessica Biel, honestly?? Really?

    Gross.

  67. p3rp3tu4 says:

AGREE, if wish to see anything original or interesting with fresh GOOD ACTORS, UK, bbc *all*,e4, same for fashion or hair magazines. Brit or Aussie Vogue, UK hair magazines. Hair color & styles (anything other than SAME BORING USA brands) Schwarzkopf anyone?. The USA tries to replicate the shows with USA actors even & they “suck” , they should never do that or make similar mags yawn(but with same ole faces from the boring tv shows we don’t watch nor are interested in). Forget Leno & Conan, Try Gervais or Norton or someone interesting like Chelsea & CHUY. USA Syfy puts you to sleep now.

  68. Dhavy says:

I hate to say it but the problem is that Americans have become so obsessed with celebrities that they have too much input on the fashion industry.

Jessica Bei is a horrble actress and she does not have any fashion sense at all so she shouldn’t be there. Funny how all these so called celebrities that have no talent also decide to make their own lines like Beyonce and JLo. Their clothes are horrible and they dress horrible too. I the fashion industry goes back to models the way it’s supposed to be.

  69. SisterAgnes says:

“I’ve been looking at Rihanna a lot, checking her out. She’s got something going on that I am sort of craving a little bit.” ”

What an interesting comment. Reading the article on Vogue.com it seems even the writer/interviewer found it a strange and awkward thing to say. She *has* to know what the tabloids have been saying about JT and Rihanna. And unfortunately for her, she’s only lending credence to that story with this weird comment. I have to say, Justin and Rihanna would make a far more interesting combo than he currently does with Ms.Bore!

Also, she doesn’t look as great as she has in the past. Has she done something to her face?

  70. ~A says:

Oh Come on. We’d all love to look that good.

  71. John Lestat says:

Funny. JB has a top-tier voice, her face and body are remarkable, she’s fine as an actress (um, The Illusionist anyone?). These are all empirical facts, like 2+2=4.

Direct quote from my WIFE, as we were watching Blade Trinity last night: “That actress is probably the most gorgeous woman on earth.”

I mean, there’s room for disagreement here (not much, but I’m trying to be diplomatic) . . . but “baboon”?! You must have downed two cases of Budweiser, then put your beer-goggles on backwards.

  72. lola lola says:

Poor girl. She is delusional about her talent and sorry but her body may rock but that face..YIKESA! Horseface all the way. She will never be a big draw for a movie audience. She’s not interesting, pretty or talented. And the more she talks, the more idiotic she sounds. Take the Meryl Streep route honey and SHUT UP!

  73. ViktoryGin says:

Okay, come on…Hollywood is know for pandering compromised material to the masses. She speaks as if the proliferation of weak material is a recent phenomenon. For quality, one’s efforts have to be geared toward the smaller production companies who are developing projects with more artistic depth. What you have to sacrifice, in turn, is visibility and exposure. Usually, the types who are attracted to these kinds of projects are the serious actors who actually have the histrionic gravitas to effectively execute these roles. The problem is that when casting directors are filling the roles for these films, they aren’t thinking about her. They’re going to cast Natalie Portman or Ellen Page, actresses who can…act.

I don’t hate Jessica Biel, but as an actress she is flat and incurably insipid. She nearly ruined the Illusionist for me as it was painful hearing her virtually choke on the Brit RP accent. God. Painful.

  74. Kylie says:

You know why people bag her.. Because Perez Hilton says so! Perez Hilton starts hating on someone then all the gossip sites follow suit.

  75. She's right says:

While I find it horrifying, I have to agree with Jessica. There is very little drama material being produced in hollywood these days. Hollywood stopped being creative about 10-15 years ago; everything they’re doing has to be BLOCKBUSTERS and IS big CGI & action films. HOWEVER, what chestica obviously doesn’t know is that dramas nowadays are INDEPENDENT films. If you want to do a drama, you’ve got to do an indy film. Obviously, she is waiting by the phone for someone to call her for a drama. I have a feeling she’s going to be waiting for a long, long time…

  76. Phowie says:

“wax rhapsodical.” This phrase, as used in context, means that the person in question became giddy with envisioned images. It is very different from the phrase “wax rhapsodically,” which means that one is gleefully waxing oneself. In my experience, this almost never happens. Usually there’s screaming involved.

  77. lolo says:

She is very pretty indeed. But still, a horse is a horse. Of course of course.

  78. meow says:

And of course all of you posters must be stunning, and oh-so-proficient in your chosen careers!

Because obviously none of your vitriol is down to petty jealousy and insecurity…

  79. mike nike says:

The reason she gets no drama roles is because its her body selling the movie. Lets face it. It’s not her acting abilities. She will never be taken seriously. Shes too alpha female as well.
