John Edwards: wife-beater?

John Edwards Campaigns In New Hampshire Ahead Of Primary

The National Enquirer is still hellbent on winning a Pulitzer for their over-the-top coverage of the Edwards saga. This week’s story involves the “last straw” fight that ended their marriage, and Elizabeth Edwards’ confession (to friends) that John “beat” her. Once I read the story, I could see how this incident may have been possible, and God knows it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if John Edwards was smarmy enough to beat women. And yet… there is a whiff of bullsh-t in this story. Here’s the Enquirer’s version:

Cancer-stricken Elizabeth Edwards is telling pals that John beat her during a horrific marriage-ending fight, The ENQUIRER has learned exclusively.

“John lost his temper big-time,” revealed a close friend of Elizabeth. “She has the divorce papers drawn up, but she can amend them to charge John with domestic violence. She’s holding that over his head right now – and he’s scared. Elizabeth is in control.”

Elizabeth privately disclosed all the shocking details of the alleged attack, says a close friend. The friend spoke in detail about the terrifying incident – and passed a lie detector test regarding the shocking fight.

“John beat me,” Elizabeth had told the friend. Other sources confirm that the couple’s furious confrontation was the “final straw” in 60-year-old Elizabeth’s decision to end their 32-year marriage.

The disgraced politician has amassed a long and shameful history of denying The ENQUIRER’s stories about his cheating and his love child. But on Jan. 21, the former presidential candidate finally admitted paternity of his 2-year-old daughter Frances by mistress Rielle Hunter, and a distraught Elizabeth confirmed that the couple had officially separated.

The alleged beating ended any hope that the Edwards marriage could continue. The friend reveals Elizabeth said: “When he (John) made the decision to hit me, it was over.”

John did not respond when The Enquirer asked him to comment on the allegation he beat his wife. Another source revealed: “Elizabeth has slapped John in the past during fights over his extramarital affair with Rielle. She was so tormented by John’s cheating and lies that she lashed out physically at him many times, even slapping him. On a couple of occasions, when the fights became heated, she grabbed him by the shoulders and screamed, ‘Why, why, why?!’”

“Elizabeth would break down in tears and try to make John explain why he was throwing his family and political life away. During one of the confrontations, Elizabeth grabbed his arms and shook him so hard that John had to restrain her.”

But the fighting escalated – and the ugly incident that “happened around the Christmas holidays turned out to be a violent, marriage-ending fight,” said another source.

Maybe the whiff of bullsh-t is the claim that Elizabeth is going to use a domestic violence claim in her divorce? Does that seem realistic? I mean, either he hit her or he didn’t. Either she called the cops or she didn’t. Either say you were abused, or don’t. I don’t get this whole “I’m going to wait to say he beat me for the divorce negotiations” stuff.

In other Edwards-related news, that rumor about the sex tape is pretty much verified. Allegedly, the tape is of John Edwards having sex with Rielle Hunter when she was pregnant with daughter Frances. Andrew Young “stole” the tape from Rielle (probably when he was pretending to be the baby-daddy) and is now trying to release the tape as cross-promotion for his tell-all book. Yikes, yikes and yikes.

He’s proven to be a cheating scumbag, but this:

“The alleged beating ended any hope that the Edwards marriage could continue. The friend reveals Elizabeth said: “When he (John) made the decision to hit me, it was over.”

sounds breathlessly hysterical. Like Elizabeth’s “friends” are going to say crap like that.

    I call bullshit.

The Edwards got comfortable playing with fire. And, the National Enquirer was THE ONLY paper that investigated and printed the truth about this pair of southern fried grifters.

I don’t put any of this past Elizabeth. And if it’s true that she slapped and shook him, then she’s guilty of violence, too.

They played with fire and got burned.

I think it might be true. Something did’nt seem right that Elizabeth filed for divorce because John finally announced his paternity. She has known it for some time. There are reports she took Christmas presents to the child. So it does seem likely to me that something else did happen to push her to separate. Maybe it was the NE’s story of John’s alleged come-on to a waitress.

@ Tess: “southern fried grifters” – LOL!!

That really does appear to be the case at this point. So much trashy drama and very little substance with this couple.

They seem really co-dependent. All I got out of the above is that she has physically lashed out at him, slapped him, shook him and gotten so out of control that he has had to restrain her out of self-defense. And I agree, either he hit her or he didn’t and if he did, I hope she did more than tell a girlfriend because if she intends to cite that in her divorce then she would have been wise to have called the police and filed domestic abuse charges. Otherwise, its all just hearsay to the court. My guess would be that maybe he decided after all the scandals, etc., that he wants to start over fresh with his babymama and this isn’t going down to well with his wife, hence the threats.

It’s amazing to me that so many politicians will risk it all for some extramarital tail.

Until recently, it was common to hear about how women couldn’t be trusted with high political office, since they’re hormonal and all. How about looking into how pathetically subservient so many male politicians are to their schlongs? What if Rielle Hunter worked for the Soviets??? Or Mark Sanford’s Argentinian lady was in league with the terrorists??? (Just echoing the kinds of claims that get made about “the nuclear button” and the “time of the month”.)

They are both disgusting… I know she has cancer and it’s awful, but having cancer doesn’t make you a better person or someone to respect. She should have left him YEARS ago. I feel bad for all of the children involved.

This whole situation sickens and saddens me but before we are through kicking the s**t out of the Edward’s can we get one or two for that slimy Andrew Young? Not only did he volunteer to take the rap, he did it with a wife and kids! Additionally he never blew the whistle on Edwards…never of course until after the fact when he wrote what will prove to be a very profitable book I am told that in the book he says since John Edwards cheated the campaign donors he should really pay some of them back so I say since Mr. Young aided and abeted in the cheating he should pay some too…think that will happen? Didn’t either. As for Elizabeth I can’t bring myself to kick a woman who has been so horribly humiliated, has lost a child and is dying with cancer, guess I’m just too soft for this brave and brutal new world.
