‘Lost: The Final Season’ premieres, blows everyone’s mind (spoilers)

Naveen Andrews at the premiere of the final season of Lost

Just FYI: This whole post is a SPOILER, so if you haven’t seen Lost yet, and you don’t want to ruin anything, just move along!

Okay, as I just mentioned in the other post, I’m terribly hungover today because I drank way too much last night as I watched the two-hour premiere of Lost: The Final Season. I was devastated, crazed, amazed, hurt, elated and rapt. In a word, I was mindf-cked. I started drinking about a half an hour into the show when I convinced myself that Sayid was being killed off. Thankfully… well, I’m just glad I watched until the end, right?

First, let me just say that I’m not any kind of Lost expert. Every now and then I read Entertainment Weekly, and I read some interviews here and there. I have a college education, I understand symbolism and I have a basic-to-well-read grasp of major religions and religious texts. I am not a scientist, and my understanding of most things involving physics, quantum mechanics, space-time continuums, et cetera basically comes from movies and the occasional Time Magazine article. Basically, if you’ve come here for expertise, you’re in the wrong place.

Now, let’s get some of the biggest news out of the way: The Smoke Monster! Can you believe that we finally know what – or should I say, who – the Smoke Monster is?!? The Man in Black is a piece of work. Is he the devil? Is working on behalf of some sort of cosmic evil? Is The Man in Black simply an avatar of anger, rage, hatred and evil? Is he Cain to Jacob’s Abel?

Other thoughts: I never really cared for Ian Sommerholder or his character, but I was so pleased to see him on the plane. But where was Maggie Grace? Did she not want to come back to the series that f-cking made her? Or did her brother’s comment about not how she didn’t want to be rescued from her bad relationship mean that Maggie never got on the plane in this universe? But I forgot all about that brother and sister stuff when CHARLIE came back!! I love Dominic Monaghan so, so, so much and his small part made my damn night!

Now Sayid – I started drinking because I thought Sayid was a goner. I was seriously ready to pack it in, especially when those strange people (Chinese? And Portuguese maybe?) drowned Sayid in the damn swimming pool of regeneration/fountain of youth. But Sayid is still alive! I think the swimming pool might have healed him quasi-instantly, much like the cup of Christ saved Sean Connery in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.

And Sawyer and Juliet… f-ck me, their scenes are so beautiful together. I think Josh Halloway is a very underrated actor, always. But his scenes with Elizabeth Mitchell kill me. The tenderness those two actors expose with each other is just amazing. I cried.

I actually liked Kate in the parallel-plane universe as she was running from the bounty hunter. She’s really good at escaping sh-t, and in general, they kept her whining to a minimum, which I liked. I even liked Jack a little, both on the plane and on the island. OH! That was another thing – Christian Shepherd’s body was never on the damn plane?!? Mindf-ck.

I have so, so much more to say about this stuff, but I think it’s better if I just cool it for now. What were your thoughts? Were you mindf-cked too? By the way, someone at ABC sent us this heads-up: apparently, we can all go to ABC online and watch the full premiere over and over again (here). The site also has lots of clips, interviews, photos and other Lost goodies too (here).

Is Sayid still alive??? I’m not so sure. Maybe Jacob found his own loophole.

Sawyer and Juliet, so sad! Love both actors, so good. I hope somehow they walk off into the sunset together at the end.
I loved the alternate reality plane scenes, especially Locke and John talking after the flight.
How amazing is Terry O’Quinn?!? Just brilliant.

  2. Stacie says:

I couldn’t believe they’d kill off Sayid, but it is Lost, after all. I didn’t think they’d kill off Boone, or Charlie, or Eko, or….

Is it really Sayid back from the dead? Or maybe Jacob’s borrowing his body like Smoke Monster borrowed Locke’s?

I don’t really like the non-crash universe so far. I thought Sawyer was either going to help Kate escape or try to con Hurley out of his lottery winnings.

Why did Hurley say he was lucky on the plane? Wouldn’t he still have gone to Australia because he thought he was cursed by winning the lottery?

And what did Juliet mean by “It worked”?

At least Jin and Sun are in the same year again. That will be a nice reunion.

Overall, I love the show. It is a mindf*ck, and that’s why it’s great 🙂

  3. lucy2 says:

The theory I see being floated around is that Juliet said “it worked” because as she was dying there, she was also seeing the alternate reality (where she was alive and maybe talking to Sawyer about getting coffee)
I agree Kaiser, I never really liked Boone much (he failed at everything he tried to do) but I really liked seeing him on the plane, and his conversation with Locke.
I’ve heard Maggie wasn’t available for filming, but it was probably also intentional – her character wasn’t on the plane, just another of the few little changes from the original flight.

  4. Sumodo says:

Nope. Not gonna watch. Done with Lost. WIsh I could be done with The Real Housewives franchise, but I’m not. Lost, however, dunzo. If you enjoy the show, that’s cool.

  5. naye in VA says:

yea somebody else said to me that Jacob might be inhabiting Sayids body. which would make me sad.

so now that we know who the smoke monster is
WHY WAS HE RUNNIN AROUND KILLING PEOPLE ALL WILLY-NILLY. ANGRY MUCH?

they KILLED me with the Juliet scene. First shes dead, then she might not be, oh wait maybe she is, oh LOOK she isnt she might make it, up no wait…shes dead. that totally dsestroyed me becuase i LOVED her and Sawyer together. Actually their relationship is the only reason i even began to like Saywers character.

IDK about hte whole Jacob thing. I think it was pretty clear that the survivors are in an “alternate present” and the people that were on the plane are in an “alternate past. Jacob somehow knew that they would change the future because he wrote the note in Hurleys guitar case to the poeple of the alternate present.

What i do get is there is still a very real present. You know Locke/Smoke Monster punching Richard in the face. How is taht still happening?

and POOR JIN> i forgot him and Sun were on the outs when they got on the plane. NOOO Sun NOOOO

  6. Bonfire Beach says:

Sumodo – me too. I invested so much of myself in the first three seasons and had to give it up. It was really a great show in the beginning and then got way too weird for me. I became totally lost myself and my brain damn near collapsed into itself trying to follow it. When it’s over I hope to watch the whole series from start to finish but I’m done with it for now.

  7. Bodhi says:

I wanna know where Desmond went after he talked to Jack! A plane is only so big, damnit!!

I cried like a baby when Juliet died… I really hated her at first, but she & Sawyer were perfect together. The actors have amazing chemistry

  8. April says:

I love this show!! I only wish there had been more Desmond. I loved Sawyer and Juliet together, they would have killed Kate off instead! Kate has annoyed me since season 1.

  9. Justalark says:

I know that many viewers have given up on Lost, but I’m committed to watching the final season to see how everything is finally explained. I admit that the show can be mentally exhausting, but at least it’s not a passive, mindless TV!
Here are my random thoughts on last night’s episode: (1) I am also sorry to see Juliet go–she was a much better match for Sawyer than Kate–and I wondered why they couldn’t have taken her to the “magic, healing waters” of the Temple like they did Sayid. (2) Regarding Sayid, I am suspicious of his sudden recovery and I’m wondering if his body is being possessed by Jacob (it’s not like there’s not a precedent for this sort of thing). (3) Why was Jack’s neck bleeding when he was in the alternate reality on the plane? (This is Lost, so you know that every detail is significant!)(4) I wish there would have been some references to Claire and the baby (other than the taxi scene) because they played important roles in past seasons. (5) The way the one character temporarily held off evil-Locke/smoke monster with the magic circle made me think that he was an incarnation of the devil. Therefore, if he wants to go “home,” that must be back to hell. If the characters are in a Heaven/Hell (Good/Evil) scenario, is the island some kind of Purgatory where souls go to learn lessons and repent? (6) If the smoke monster is not some evil/Satanic character, is he an alien? Was the plane sucked into an alternate universe/planet/spacecraft via the Bermuda Triangle or something? Does the poor smoke monster just want to go back to his home planet and he’s playing with the characters to pass the time?
All I can say is, as the PLOT THICKENS, I am LOST in speculation!!!

  10. Stacie says:

If the Smoke Monster turns out to be a demon, they can do a crossover and bring in the Winchesters from Supernatural.

The actor who plays Jacob is also playing Lucifer on Supernatural anyway 🙂

  11. Kolby says:

I was just reading an interview with Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse and they were adamant that the plane scenes were not an “alternate” reality. There are two timelines, existing together (yet seperately), and right now all we know is that they are both “real” and progressing. The point of the small changes on the plane from Sydney is to demonstrate how deeply their detonation of Jughead would relaly affect everyone and everything. They had only been concerned about themselves, about getting themselves back, that they never stopped to think about all the other people on the plane and the hundreds of lives that have now been affected. It’s crazy, and deep, and holy crow I can’t wait to see what role Desmond (my boy!) is going to play in this whole shebang.

  12. AlaskaJoey says:

OMG I can’t even count the ways I hate Kate. *****spoiler alert****

I wanted to tag this because I don’t know if it’ll come up later in the season.

    ***spoiler***

Damon and Carlton apparently showed a video at Comic Con which showed that in this alternate time line, Kate’s blowing up of the house apparently did not kill her stepfather, but rather some random plumber.

So, still a murderer, now of a completely innocent person. Still a hosebeast from hell. Still running away from justice. I’m going to start calling her Roman Polanski.

    ****end spoiler***

Other than that, I was so happy with last night’s episode. I knew Juliet was dead because Elizabeth Mitchell has her own show now, but I was still devastated by that scene.

I’m so confused as to the two timeline things, still! I know it will be explained eventually.

  13. lin234 says:

I gave up on season 2. I had too much to do at uni and plus if you miss one episode, there’s a good chance you won’t know what the hell is going on. When it first came out and people were raving about it, I thought it would last 2 or 3 seasons tops. I’m sure it’s very well thought out but it’s just too much waiting for me. I still watch Desperate Housewives sometimes but that show should have been canceled 2 or 3 seasons ago too. I keep thinking it’s bound to get better.

House, Criminal Minds, 30 rock and Fringe are shows worth watching.

  14. Dolkite says:

Dominic Monaghan looks like Howdy Doody in that pic…check out those ears!

And much as I hate to rip on fat people, Hurley needs to shave immediately.

  15. annerox says:

i had my closed caption on.

they said that the guy at the temple that could speak english but he didnt like the way it felt on his tounge was speaking japanese.

  16. murmur says:

I was buying the whole Jacob possessing Sayid’s body like MIB possessed Lockes’ body, until I realized that MIB didn’t possess Locke’s body. Locke’s body was lying there in the sand, dead. So maybe Jacob is in Sayid’s body, but it’s not the same as what MIB did. He just stole Locke’s image.

  17. Lark3 says:

The creators of the show have stated “when you die on the island…you are dead”. What does that mean to Sayid? HE IS DEAD!

But it certainly looks like Jacob has taken his life form so we will see where that goes.

Why did they have to kill Juliet again? The final scene with her and Sawyer killed me last year so why did they bring her back to kill her again? Wrong, wrong, wrong. I know it will have some meaning in the grand scheme of the show, but damn, that hurt!

My theory is that Desmond was a “figment of Jack’s mind” or memories and that he really wasn’t on the plane.

Smoke Monster=My head exploding…must see more!

Overall, I give it a 9/10 and I am on board for the whole season!

  18. mags says:

shit, i only watched season 1 of this show, so this spoils nothing for me b/c i have no f***ing idea what you’re talking about. but NOW i want to go back and watch everything. oh well, a social is overrated.

  19. truthSF says:

After watching last night episode, the only thing running in my mind was, “f-ck me, i’m lost”.

  20. Jenna says:

    … Ian Somerhalder… Give me.

  21. lucy2 says:

@Lark – I believe they had Juliet officially die there with Sawyer because she was able to see that “it worked” (the bomb reset). She was able to see that while still technically alive, AND was able to pass that on to Sawyer (with Miles’ help) so maybe down the road, Sawyer will realize that their reality/timeline isn’t the only one.

  22. RobN says:

The real question is why Hurley is a castaway on an island and never loses any weight. Let’s see them answer that one.

  23. Leek says:

I loved every minute of it and I would love to think that Jacob is in Sayid’s body now. Sayid is hot. So is the new Japanese guy. And Jin, too. Oh, and Sawyer.

  24. Amy says:

    My two questions:

    1) So we see Claire in the non-plane crash universe. WHERE THE HELL IS SHE ON THE ISLAND? Where did she disappear to with her father when she abandoned Aaron in the woods? No offense to the writers, but how did they think that was a good idea?

    2) Sayid is not Sayid? Apparently in the Lost Universe, when you die, you really die. I don’t think it’s really Sayid who is in his body. I think some people who say it’s Jacob are on to something.

  25. Kelbees says:

I think I’ll need to catch up with the series. I watched the season finale then the season premier last night…and I think before seeing last season’s finale, I’d seen a few episodes in season 1. Anyhow, what I’m trying to get at is that the first time I saw Lost, they seemed to be trying to use scientific reasoning and now they’ve just gone “Ahh, to heck with it. MAGIC!” Probably wrong, but it makes me giggle so I’ll keep those thoughts.

  26. justathought says:

I do think you have to have a high IQ to continue watching Lost.
Now that I’ve settled that bit of information: Did you see the evil in Locke’s eyes at the very end of the show?! Creepy indeed. Our kind Locke is the dreaded smoke monster! I can see how this season will end. Kate and Jack will bump into each other at the airport but in a “happier state of mind”, and they will look up at each other and say: Don’t I know you from somewhere? We will be left Lost while the credits roll!

  27. SolitaryAngel says:

When Jack’s father Christian’s casket turned out to NOT be on the plane, I thought “of course it isn’t–it fell onto the island after the original crash, therefore in this timeline they can’t find it”…And the way Jack was looking around, I just KNEW he was gonna remember any second–then he didn’t! AARGH! I am heartily sick of the “Kate escaping again and again” thing though, and Sawyer & Juliet really had such wonderful chemistry together I almost cried too! I wonder how she knew it worked? And you guys!!!! That Japanese guy is Ujio from “The Last Samurai”!! Woohoo Ujio! I’d heard he would be appearing on Lost but didn’t expect him the first episode! I’m pretty sure about Sayid that either: 1) He is alive and himself or 2) Jacob DID find his own loophole. CAN’T WAIT to see more!! All you people who gave up on Lost, I can’t believe you would prefer Desperate Skanks to THIS.

  28. wilson says:

Sayid IS dead, jacob is now in Sayid’s body, you really did not figure that out????

  29. wilson says:

Jacob needed sayid’s alive body to get into that is why the guy said we are skrewed if he dies. (if he dies before Jacob gets in the body)
Now the man in black is using lockes allready dead body, makes me wonder if he used Christian’s body when the plane first crashed and that is why Jack kept seeing his dad.
    Where is Claire? Good question

  30. wilson says:

Did you catch Juliet wanted to tell sawyer “it worked” , how did she know it worked?
Robn you must not watch the show, they have plenty of food.

  31. Tess says:

    The Sopranos trivia:

I think the new Japanese guy is the same actor who gave an absolutely stellar performance on The Sopranos as the deeply disturbed whackjob at Uncle Junior’s mental institution.

  32. bella says:

I have been a “Lostie” since the first episode of the first season. That being said, if you really want to understand what’s going on, you need to buy the series/seasons on DVD, because it’s the only way you can stop, re-start, and watch over and over again. Every time I watch (re-watch) an episode, I notice new things.

And I love, love, LOVE Sawyer and Sayid!

  33. ronnie says:

Jacob is inhabiting Sayid’s body. The Man-In-Black/Smoke Monster has taken the shape of John Locke. Juliet said “It worked” and made her other comments about going for coffee because she was seeing/transitioning to the other reality. The differences on the plane in the other reality were because events *prior* to the flight were also changed which is why Shannon did not accompany Boone on the flight, Desmond was on the flight instead of being on the island, and Hurley said that nothing bad ever happens to him and, unless John was lying, he DID get to go on that walkabout after all!

  34. cready says:

I thought Shannon(Maggie Grace) was the one in the cab that Kate car-jacked at the end – not claire – I guess I need to re-watch.

  35. PJ says:

I was done with the show when I thought Sayid died. Seriously, I knew I wasn’t going to watch another episode…then he came back and I don’t care if it’s the real Sayid or Jacob – let Naveen be on my tv every week and all will be right in the universe!!
Wilson, you brought up a very good point about the relevant meaning of Jacob’s note in regards to keeping Sayid alive. I didn’t think about that and you just might be right on that one! I really didnt think Jacob took over Sayid’s body, but your comment may have changed my mind.
I loved the premiere of this last season of Lost. I felt like it was Christmas all over again – getting to see Boone and Charlie!! What a treat!!

  36. lucy2 says:

@wilson – yes, I believe when Christian appeared on the island, it was really MIB in his form. Same with Yemi, Eko’s brother, and Alex when she told Ben to do whatever Locke said. MIB is quite the manipulator.
I think Lost has always been a mix of real science and sci-fi/fantasy. I like how most of the more outrageous things have some basis in reality, where studied at one point, etc. That they’ve managed to do all that, with the story and the depth of knowledge of all the little details, AND have wonderfully complex and interesting characters at the same time is what’s made me love the show.
I can totally understand why so many gave up on it, but I would always recommend checking it out on DVD. It’s the best way to watch a show like this.

  37. Jules says:

One name…Ben. That man gives me such chills and most of the series has hinged on his evil manipulations. I think his retribution for being so screwed over by both Jacob and the Man in Black will be awesome.

  38. velcrodots says:

I was gonna read this, but I think I can wait till next wednesday when it premiers here….I think. If I can’t I’ll bookmark this page and come back to it hehe

  39. LostJunkie says:

Explanation for Hurley and the numbers (luckiest guy in the world):

In the alternate world, the island was underwater, which means the numbers were never broadcast, which means the 2 army guys never heard them, which means the army guy in the asylum with Hurley never repeated them over and over, which mean Hurley won the lottery some other way…

  40. Ellen says:

To Cready/#34: Claire was the one in the cab. Enjoyed the premiere, liked the alternate universe, but do we really need a whole new tribe of others?! I thought the Sawyer/Juliet death scene was overdone. As was the strong arm of black smoke. Even if Sayid is dead, we’ll still get ot see him in the alternate universe, right? please?
