If you have or are around children between the ages of, let’s say, five to 17, chances are they’ve seen A Minecraft Movie in theaters. Even if you haven’t seen it yourself, you may have heard/seen some of the more famous lines from the movie. There’s so much enthusiasm for it that it had the biggest box office opening of the year when it was released in early April. Kids were also basically turning it into their own personal Rocky Horror Picture Show midnight screening, calling out lines like ”Chicken Jockey!” and cheering when Jack Black declared, ”I am Steve.” At some theaters, they had to be asked to calm the f-ck down and stop doing things like throwing popcorn and shouting out loud. Now, the Minecraft Movie fans have helped set a new record. “Steve’s Lava Chicken,” a jingle sung by Black, has not only hit the Billboard Hot 100, it’s set a record as the shortest song to ever chart.
Jack Black‘s “Minecraft Movie” meme jam “Steve’s Lava Chicken” has become the shortest song to ever enter the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
“Steve’s Lava Chicken,’ which clocks in at a mere 34 seconds, debuted at No. 78 on the Hot 100. The song also reached No. 10 on the Hot Rock Songs chart. According to online data tracker Luminate (per Billboard), the tune has achieved 7 million total streams in the United States between April 18 and April 24.
Black, a member of the comedy rock duo Tenacious D, is not the only accomplished musician featured on the “Minecraft Movie” soundtrack. The top-billed track, “I Feel Alive,” features “Foo Fighters” lead singer Dave Grohl on drums, Queens of the Stone Age’s Troy Van Leeuwen on guitar and Jellyfish’s Roger Joseph Manning Jr. on keys.
“Steve’s Lava Chicken” took the record for the shortest song ever on the Hot 100 from Kid Cudi’s “Beautiful Trip,” which has a run time of 37 seconds. Other short songs that have broken the Hot 100 include “Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen” by Piko-Taro (45 seconds), “Little Boxes” by The Womenfolk (one minute and two seconds) “Deck the Halls” by Nat King Cole (one minute and six seconds) and “Pete Davidson” by Ariana Grande (one minute and 13 seconds).
Y’all, “Steve’s Lava Chicken” is a jam. My kids have been playing it quite a bit and I enjoy that it’s so short. I mean, it’s no “Peaches” but it’s still a damn earworm. (“Peaches” was the song he sang while playing Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It also made the Billboard charts around the world.) I just asked my kids about the Chicken Song and after they were done singing it to me, they both answered, and I quote, ”Yeah, it’s popular. Lots of kids sing it. If one kid starts singing it, then a whole bunch of kids start singing it.” Then, they sang it again in unison. So, there you have it, folks. I think Jack Black has become the guy that has found this very specific niche of parody movie jingles that are so catchy, they go mainstream.
We took our kids to see this–it was hilariously stupid. And omg that lava chicken song, my youngest sings it all the time!
I took my grandson and thought the same thing. It was funny because it’s so stupid. And Jason Moma is hilarious.
Jason Mamoa’s character cracked me up. “No autographs, please.”
Yup that’s catchy! I don’t know anything about minecraft, I think that is what this is. Or roblox? Some children’s thing
I took my youngest to the ipic thinking at the very least I can drink while I suffer this boring movie… I actually liked it. Jack Black is always gonna jackblack so I knew that deal was sealed. I was not expecting Jason Moma to be hilarious! I’d go watch again.
I listen to the BBC and the DJ doing the charts show sighed as he announced the song last week, it was hilarious.
I want to see this. I love his energy.
