Tiger Woods to return to “therapy” after announcement this morning

We’re waiting for Tiger Woods’ big announcement at 11:00 am EST this morning. I’m guessing that it will be a big letdown and that Tiger will just say something about how he deserves his privacy and will be returning to golf. If he does mention his dozen plus affairs, it will be briefly and he’ll refer to it in general terms and say he’s sorry but not get into it much. After all, that would be consistent with the statements he’s issued so far and the way he’s handled the scandal. Plus there’s the fact that Tiger’s people aren’t staging a traditional press conference with a question and answer period and have barred journalists from questioning Tiger at all.

One detail that has come out from Tiger’s camp is the fact that Tiger will be returning to “therapy” following his press conference. Some outlets are interpreting this to mean that he’s going to back to rehab, and it sure sounds like it but it’s hard to tell. “Therapy” could also means a nearby counselor, probably one that makes house calls for the kind of bucks that Tiger has to throw around. But it sounds more like rehab if the news event was hard to schedule. Good for him, I guess.

I really can’t stand Tiger and think he handled this scandal piss poorly. I was surprised to read comments on our story yesterday that some of you think he deserves to go back to golf as if nothing happened and doesn’t owe us an apology. I stand by what I said that he did make much more money by portraying himself as a loyal family man, but I hear what you’re saying. It’s sports and there are are plenty of guys who watch it who just want to see a great golfer back on the course.

Tiger Woods will return to therapy after he ends a three-month silence and speaks about his infidelity and his future plans.

Golf’s biggest star on Friday will address the shocking and sordid sex scandal that has consumed his life since late November then will return to the clinic where he has been undergoing therapy, according to a letter from PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem obtained by The Associated Press.

Finchem’s letter to the PGA Tour policy board and other officials explained why Woods chose Friday to make his first public comments, which are to be televised live by the major networks.

“As we understand it, Tiger’s therapy called for a week’s break at this time during which he has spent a few days with his children and then will make his statement before returning,” Finchem said in the letter Thursday. “Accordingly, there was very little flexibility in the date for the announcement.”

The letter shed no light on whether Woods plans to return to the tour anytime soon.

Golf’s biggest star is to make his first public appearance since he ran his SUV over a fire hydrant and into a tree outside his Florida home on Nov. 27 and sent him into hiding.

The setting for his return is decidedly friendly. It may be hard to remember the planet is watching.

Woods will speak to a small group of “friends, colleagues and close associates” in the Sunset Room on the second floor of the TPC Sawgrass, home of the PGA Tour. Just one video camera will broadcast the event and there will be no questions.

Woods’ statement comes during the Match Play Championship, sponsored by Accenture, the first company to drop Woods as a pitchman.

There’s of course the ongoing speculation as to whether Elin will stand by Tiger during the conference, like poor Silda Spitzer did when her husband resigned as Governor of New York. Most outlets reported yesterday that she’s opting out, and I hope that’s true. Plus it seems consistent with the kind of low-key way Elin has led her life up to this point. Radar reports that there are intense negotations underway for Elin to attend though. Meanwhile Hollywood Life points out that Elin has been seen out decked in Nike gear, which may silently signal that she’s backing her husband and one of his few remaining sponsors. I don’t know, they probably have a ton of free Nike gear at home and it might not mean anything. We’ll see! Run Elin run!

Here are new photos of Tiger playing golf all decked out in Nike gear before his big announcement. These are also from Getty, which had the first photos yesterday of Tiger out running. TMZ estimates that by working with Getty to arrange the first post scandal photos, Tiger may have blocked an over $1 million photo opportunity from the paparazzi.

She would be a fool if she stood by him. Even if they are trying to work it out, she should stay away!

That grin on his face makes me sick.
I don’t think that Elin wearing Nike, has anything to with her supporting Tiger….I agree with what you said; they have a ton of free Nike gear at home and it most likely doesn’t mean anything [things would be different, if she’d wear her wedding ring].

  3. trollydolly says:

I really don’t care what Tiger Woods has done in his private life. I don’t think he has anything to apologise for to me – and to the fans in general.
    He’s a sportsman not a politician.
I was initially enthralled by the revelations of his carry-on, but only because I have a weakness for gossip (hence I adore this site)
I don’t know him and I frankly don’t care who he shags. Same for John Terry and Ashley Cole. It’s between them and their respective wives.

Looking at that sh!t-eating grin makes me want to vomit.

  5. Madelyn Rose says:

    I agree with you trollydolly.

But I also agree with Celebitchy’s point that Tiger handled this scandal in a piss poor manner! Didn’t he have PR people working for him? I just couldn’t believe how it spiraled out of control so quickly – if a good PR team had been working overtime, I don’t think it would have gotten so bad.

  6. Cinderella says:

Why do I not believe a word he said. He is such a joke.

He knows damn well he wants to play in the Masters. Next year, my ass.

  7. bite me says:

    that apology was so …

  8. Toe says:

I liked the speach. He told the media to back off my wife and child. And all of the mistesses is none of ya’ll business.
I wanna see how the media + “experts” will disect the whole speach.

Oh, and he’s so sorry for having fun

  9. Cinderella says:

Oh, how rich that he wants to be the noble husband and protect the wife and kids. He didn’t bother before, why start now. He’s just afraid Elin is getting better press, which she is!

  10. p3rp3tu4 says:

So it is just so that he can get back to playing basically. Open Tiger Woods Family Therapy & figure out what if anything really works for all involved? Your talking about generations within his family slaughtered emotionally. Somehow I just see it becoming glorified in some movie by the media. Reminds me of Californication.

  11. Embee says:

Whether or not it is my “business” that Tiger cheated on Elin, I find him to be a deplorable human being and choose not to support him in any fashion.

Thus, since the revelation about his conduct I have not worn nor purchased any Nike gear (I’ve been a lifelong user) and I have ceased wearing my Tag. I also let the companies know of my decision and why: I do not want to support or be associated with someone as repugnant as Tiger. After all, they choose an athlete to endorse because they believe s/he represents their values/attributes, and we all know what Tiger’s are now: excellent at golf; shitty with women. I’m a woman. They cannot affiliate themselves with Tiger the athlete while in the same schizophrenic breath distancing themselves from Tiger the womanizer.

He is free to go back and play golf; indeed, he should as that’s his job. And I will continue to ignore him as a one-trick pony. People who do only one thing well bore me.

  12. oxa says:

Did anyone watch his Mitress’s press conference, that was hysterical. She gave up her porn career to be with him and cried on cue, the whole thing was better than any Saturday Night Live skit. I laughed so hard tears rolled down my face and cleared my allergies.

  13. Cheyenne says:

Everybody needs to back off and stop acting like a bunch of sanctimonious assholes. Tiger does not owe you an apology. He does not owe the media an apology. The only person he owes an apology to is his wife.

He may be a jerk but he is still the greatest golfer in the world and I hope he gets back to playing like the champion he is. All the rest has to be worked out between him and his wife and the rest of the world needs to butt out.

    End of rant.

  14. california angel says:

Why any of this is news or any of our business at this point is completely beyond me. Tiger doesn’t have anybody to apologize to but himself and his wife and kids. ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzZZZZZ drooling at desk wishing the day would end lol

  15. Dirty Martini says:

I’m with Cheyenne on this one. He owes the public nothing. This is between Tiger and Elin. He’s just a golfer–the world’s greatest golfer, but a golfer. I didn’t elect him, he doesn’t represent me, and apparently I am the only woman he hasn’t had sex with. I have no right to judge him, but that isn’t stopping me. But judging him as I may, he doesnt owe me or you tiddly squat of an apology, explanation etc. As far as his sponsors–Did they have morals clauses in their contracts with him? Just asking…..if so, then yeah, maybe he owes them something. If not, nada.

  16. Me says:

What a tool. A robotic, pathetic tool.
