Duchess Meghan envisioned herself making speeches with a baby on her hip

One of the most amusing parts of the Duchess of Sussex’s Confessions of a Female Founder podcast is watching the British media fixate on some truly normal “confessions” within the conversations. Last week’s COAFF pod – an interview with Heather Hasson – garnered headline after headline about “Meghan gets takeout.” Like, the Mail and the Telegraph were OBSESSED with that completely average confession. Well, I’m listening to this week’s COAFF episode and I’m trying to predict which part will become the Daily Mail headline. Meghan interviewed Cassandra Morales, the founder of Kitsch. Meghan has history with Cassandra, they’ve known each other for decades, when Cassandra helped/styled Meghan. This is the part which People Mag thought was important:

For Meghan Markle, motherhood didn’t pan out the way she’d originally imagined. The Duchess of Sussex, 43, shares son Prince Archie, 6, and daughter Princess Lilibet, 3, with her husband, Prince Harry. During the May 20 episode of her Lemonada Media podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder, she reflected on the expectations she had for motherhood within the royal family before welcoming her children.

“I will say, for myself, especially when they are baby babies and before I was a mom, I’ve always wanted to be a mom,” she revealed. “I was like, ‘Oh gosh I’m going to give a speech with a baby on my hip.’ I had a whole vision.”

However, things didn’t go according to the Suits star’s plan.

“Granted, I had a lot of external things happening by the time I had both pregnancies and both babies,” she shared. “But it was not the way I envisioned it.”

Despite the shift in Meghan’s plans, she said that one constant remains a priority for her.

“For me, it’s so important my kids see me as a working mom,” the As ever founder noted on her podcast.

Meghan envisioning herself as “giving a speech with a baby on my hip” is a very Meghan thing. I think most women envision their working motherhood as “I’ll have the playpen in my office, I’ll have meetings with the baby on my lap.” But Meghan was like, no, I’ll be making a speech with the baby! I also think it’s important for kids to see their parents work – seeing your parents work widens your worldview from “these people are just my parents” to “oh, they have whole lives outside of me.”

As for the rest of the interview, it’s really good and interesting. I’ve loved all of these COAFF interviews and I find them so inspirational. The throughline is ambitious women who were bold enough to start their businesses despite so many obstacles.

Its impossible to guess what they’ll cling on to but I agree with how inspirational COAFF is. I’m going to be sad when it ends next week! I wish it was more than 8 episodes!

I like that her podcasts have been two different topics. It makes it more exciting to see what her next one will be about.

I think they’re going to attack the line about her kids seeing her as a working mom, because that such a contrast to W&K who are opposed to work in general and specifically if work would interfere with anything kid-related.

One of the things I really like about Meghan’s whole public persona right now that is she’s really making it clear that you can be a working, professional woman (and mother), and also someone who loves to do the cheesy breakfasts on the weekends or the cutesy Pinterest crafts etc. It doesn’t have to be an either/or situation. You can love to bake bread and love to have a professional job. You can get pleasure out of being with your kids and being involved at work. And I think sometimes it feels like society and social media makes it seem like you have to choose. I STILL see women using the phrase “paying someone else to raise your children” when they talk about daycare in 2025 and I STILL find it insulting.

So I love how Meghan is just like “yeah sometimes I do the school run and sometimes the nanny does, and sometimes I’m away for work and sometimes I’m home making thumbprint cookies and its all good.”

Children start school fairly young and after that spend a good deal of their time there or at after-school activities. And that is the norm, unless you home school, so that attitude about someone else raising the children with day care is silly. It is also a good time for those who are able to let children spend time with grandparents or other relatives who won’t be around forever, when those grandparents are providing the day care.

    My take:

MEGHAN LAMBASTS CATHERINE AND STAY AT HOME MUMS!

Meghan once again has waded into a highly contested Mumsnet controversy by haughtily saying she wanted to bring baby Archie to her Royal outings.

Her tonedeafness and lack of self-awareness betrays the privileges given to her as a working Royal that millions of other women in the country do not have access to.

According to a Royal insider, the Princess of Wales is said to be aggrieved and shocked by another arrow shot from Montecito questioning her decision to stay at home and being a hands-on mother to George the heir, Charlotte the spare, and Louis the extra spare. Catherine has told a close friend that she is saddened that she was shamed and made to cry by Meghan for doing the school runs instead of working.

    Etc etc etc

Catherine’s “white racist victim card” has been old and overused to the point it just makes my eyes roll when I read it.. eventually people get tired of the constant victimhood over ridiculous claims and WanK have both reached that point a while ago, there is no mystery why they have no crowds and zero popularity the constant incandescent rage coupled with the never ending victim hood it is draining.. time for the rota and KP to get a new playbook.

I usually listen to the podcasts later in the evening. I’m excited for this one. And I’m loving the detail. So Meghan envisioned herself working for the RF and giving speeches with her babies on her hip! The press would have attacked her for it BUT they also would’ve loved it. To have rota pictures of Meghan with her babies giving speeches. I’m imagining the BM hearing that and feeling a real sense of loss of what could’ve been. I’m glad it didn’t work out that way bc, as Meghan learned, the press would’ve been brutal to her and the kids. Unfortunately, more nappy new year headlines would’ve become the norm.

I agree with you on the press and media actually loving the sight of a royal with her baby on her hip while giving speeches, visiting her patronages. I also agree about the press and media kicking themselves for going after Meghan – & Harry – all guns cocked to flatter and stir support for less than mediocre WanK. The press regrets will never end.

In 2012 M was talking about “by the time I have children” in a media campaign about racism. She has always wanted to be a mom.

So in saying there was a time when she imagined herself giving speeches with her baby on her hip, I’m sure being a “working royal” was the farthest thing from her mind. As was being the wife of a member of the BRF.

  6. Amy Bee says:

The press will attack her again for saying she’s a working mum. She said on an earlier episode that sometimes she has Lili on her lap during Zoom calls. I imagine that had she stayed on as a working royal Meghan would have brought Archie to the office from time to time and that would have caused a controversy. I’ve been really enjoying the podcast and I hope there will be another season. I’ve said before that I’ve no interest in starting a business but I’ve learned alot especially about how to move in the world and about self-worth.
