Mail: The Sussexes’ lifestyle costs $4 million a year, which they can easily afford!

The Daily Mail published yet another breakdown of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s finances. If the royalist talking point is “the Sussexes don’t matter, they’re not relevant to the monarchy,” then why all of this monthly pocket-watching? Why do reporters consistently “forget” about various revenue streams for Harry and Meghan? Why does anyone in the UK worry about Harry and Meghan’s finances considering they are not receiving one cent from British taxpayers? I’ll spare you much of the forced melodrama of this new piece, but there were some sections I wanted to discuss:

What’s going on with Meghan’s ShopMy page? When she started posting links on the ShopMy e-commerce site, some thought that this was going to prove an irresistible source of serious income for the Duchess of Sussex. After an initial flurry on the site… Meghan has fallen silent. Indeed, she’s not posted in over two months on ShopMy and it seems that her ranking has dropped from icon to enthusiast as a result. While she continues to appear regularly on her own Instagram page and that of her brand, As Ever, she or her team are not linking through for ‘easy money’. Maybe the rewards didn’t justify the (minimal) effort, or maybe… she just doesn’t need the cash? A spokesman for the couple did not respond to requests for clarification but a source says that – however lucrative – this potential revenue stream is simply not important to her. ‘Her current priorities are centred on As Ever and expanding her business ventures. ShopMy represents an exploration into social media that she enjoys.’ The source adds: ‘The duchess has consistently approached ShopMy with a focus on authentically sharing products and designers she supports, particularly female founders she wants to uplift.’

Meghan wasn’t featured in the Montecito Journal: That said, for someone with Gwyneth Paltrow-Goop-style aspirations, Meghan isn’t even mentioned in the latest edition of the Montecito Journal, which has ‘Female Founders’ and philanthropists in Montecito as its cover story this month. Dozens of local women are featured, but Meghan does not make the cut. That must hurt.

The Sussexes’ lifestyle costs $4 million a year: The couple are widely reported to have taken out a mortgage, with repayments apparently standing at $480,000 a year. On top of this, property tax will be a further $68,000 a year. Utilities are estimated at $24,000 a year, staffing costs $250,000 and security – always a priority for Prince Harry, who made two tours of duty in Afghanistan with the Army Air Corps – is said to cost up to $3million a year. It all adds up to needing to clear around $4million a year after tax, which is quite a task.

The Netflix deal: If Harry and Meghan had really been getting $100million over five years from Netflix at a steady rate of $20million a year, then you could consider it taken care of. But a source with knowledge of the Netflix deal say it’s never worked out like that. They said: ‘From speaking to someone with knowledge of the deal, it looks like they’ve probably managed to maybe keep $10million-$15million or a touch more purely for themselves over the nearly five years so far – not bad business, but that kind of money doesn’t last long with their lifestyle. Netflix paid for the production of [the tell-all hit documentary series] Harry & Meghan, which would have included a big fee for them. I’d guess [the money Netflix spent on it] works out at $20million all-in.’

But Netflix is going to renew their deal: Yet the expectation remains that their Netflix deal will be renewed. I’m told Ted Sarandos thinks Meghan is a ‘rock star’ and will announce the deal renewal and a third series of With Love, Meghan, around the same time that the second, already filmed season, is screened later this year. It’s likely that Netflix won’t be so keen on briefing about the size of their commitment for the show: It’s probable that they’ll pay Meghan between $3-$5million a year for it.

As Ever’s success: What’s changed is that Meghan now has a ‘sell-out’ personal brand in As Ever, which, notably, is a partnership with Netflix. After selling out her jams, sprinkles and cookie mixes, she has now added a sell-out rose wine, though admittedly she has never revealed the quantities of stock for any of these products. Everything which she puts her name to goes like a rocket and it looks as if the former actress is going to be the chief breadwinner of the Sussex family by a country mile, with Harry financially trailing in her wake. What a turn-around from the situation when they met – when she was a modestly successful TV actress and he was a prince with great prospects.

Prince Harry’s income: He still has two paying jobs, one with Travalyst – a company that promotes sustainable tourism – and one with the coaching company BetterUp, where he is the chief impact officer, which is understood to be the more highly paid. The Atlanta company reports revenues of $215million in 2024, sharply up from $151million in 2023.

[From The Daily Mail]

You get the idea. Alison Boshoff did explain why she was so focused on H&M’s money – it’s because she was idly wondering if the Sussexes were desperate for King Charles’s funding, as in, that was the “real reason” why Harry & Charles’s reps met in London. Anyway, all of the stuff about their first Netflix deal is BS – I honestly believe that since they signed with Netflix, they have been doing very well financially. It also speaks volumes to me that Boshoff left off the tens of millions of dollars Harry made from his memoir, Spare. She also ignored the investments Harry and Meghan have made in other businesses, like Meghan’s investment in Cesta Collective and Clevr Blends. That being said, I find it fascinating that Meghan hasn’t updated her ShopMy page in two months. She really is focused on As Ever right now. I also suspect that she’ll update ShopMy when the second season of With Love, Meghan comes out (surely??), but Meghan sold out three product drops in a row and she must be like “sh-t, I really need to build this company and become a billionaire.” Even in the Mail’s craziest deranger-fiction, Meghan is still super-successful and well-liked by Netflix.

Ah yes, so they estimate their costs at $XM/pa but what about the Lazies and the rest of the Windsors?

Don’t they care about the public money that funds them?

    No?

    Crickets then.

  2. jais says:

Okay, so a question that I’ve had is whether Harry does get some kind of a salary or money from Travalyst and here it’s saying he does. Huh. No idea if that’s true or not but interesting. And yeah, Harry made some serious Spare money.

    • wendy says:

I don’t think he draws a salary from Travalyst – isn’t it considered a charity?

I have visited the site several times and while I can read the mission statements, I haven’t been able to turn it into actionable information to plan more sustainable travel.

    • Julia says:

Unlike BetterUp which is a private company Travalyst (which Harry started when he was a working royal) is a non profit. It has staff of course and they get paid but I believe Harry gives his time for free like he does with Invictus. Harry’s big money makers have been Spare ($20 million + royalties) and BetterUp where he allegedly gets a 7 figure salary. Harry and Meghan are wealthy people they can afford to do charity and non profit work for free).

      • sevenblue says:

@Julia, yeah, the charities pay their employees salary. People aren’t giving their full time for free. But, I doubt Harry is getting paid. He doesn’t do the operational work and the charity has its own managers who would be paid.

      • Me at home says:

        Thanks for this info!

      • Fandango says:

He also started with his inheritance from Diana which would have multiplied numerous times over since she died.

  3. SarahLee says:

Remember when Charles admonished Harry that he “couldn’t afford to take care of Meghan too?” Yeah – they don’t need you, Chuck.

    • one of the marys says:

That’s a shocking thing to hear from the King of England. That should have gotten way more play in the media

      • sunnyside up says:

Especially when his income has jumped right up from the wind farms at sea. He chose not to afford it.

    • Walking the Walk says:

This. If I am Meghan, I am showing you every day me and my kids are solid. You can kick rocks Grandpa C.

    • yellow says:

He couldn’t afford Meghan and wanted her to work…

…but additionally, Buckingham Palace contacted the Suits production to edit “inappropriate” scenes featuring Rachel Zane.

      Make it make sense, Chuck.

  4. Gemini says:

Maybe, being July and all she is on vacation before her new season airs and she becomes more visible to do promo work. Taking vacations is not just for the Keens, you know.

Again they are not saying what they really want to say. They wanna say Meghan outearns you Harry, divorce her!

    • sunnyside up says:

What’s wrong with the wife earning more than the husband, the DM needs to catch up with the 21st century.

  5. Angelica Schuyler says:

These people really can’t stand that H&M are financially solid. It kills them that the Sussexes are so successful. I love that for them. Just love it. As they say, success is the best revenge. So Harry and Meghan can sleep comfortably at night knowing that in spite of all their efforts, the naysayers have NOT ruined their financial stability.

Also, think about this, while H&M are building their businesses, they already have enough money, that their investments are earning for them in addition to their labor.

Poor little crumpets over on salty isle can go cry in their Dutchy tea.

  6. Noor says:

Hey Daily Mail , people actually want to know how much income tax William paid from his GBP 26 million annual income from the Duchy of Cornwall .

  7. sevenblue says:

I can’t believe they finally acknowledged that Harry is working for BetterUp and getting paid there. They usually act like Harry doesn’t have a job. Why the change?

  8. Becks1 says:

They’re “so worried” that H&M might need money from Charles, lmao. Nah, they’re fine. They have their Netflix contract, they had the Spotify contract, Lemonada, As Ever, BetterUp, Spare, speaking fees, and whatever investments they’re making, which I’m sure are numerous. And if they haven’t really touched Harry’s inheritance from his mother, then that’s just making money for them.

And thats just what we KNOW about. They’re fine. More than fine lol. Meghan will probably update her ShopMy page when the next season comes out, but maybe she’s decided she doesn’t want to keep up with it. Time will tell.

Sorry british press. They’re not coming back!!!

    • Gtwiecz says:

Plus, it’s his father, and if he wants to give him money it’s their own damn business! These people are so deluded that they forget Charles is his father.

  9. Amy Bee says:

When Meghan met Harry, she was a self-made millionaire and he was relying on his father funding who had no money to buy a proper sofa. Not only did the DM leave off his money from Spare but also the money he makes in speaking engagements. The British press should be pocket-watching the royals they pay for.

  10. Me at home says:

The Fail still doesn’t get it. Meghan brings in the income, Harry is pursuing his lifelong dedication to public service, and this arrangement is great for both of them. I know a few couples where one member (often the wife) is the big earner and the husband teaches or works for a not-for-profit. That way both work hard (SAHM is working too, just to be clear), the couple doesn’t sacrifice, and both get to feel they’re making a difference.

Haha, my one beef with Meghan is that my summer wardrobe needs an update and she hasn’t posted to her ShopMy in ages.

    • Fandango says:

He’s made tons of money and still brings in plenty. Plus he started with a very significant inheritance. He is focussed on investing his money as we’ve heard.

  11. Fina says:

I cannot understand this accounting. Their staffing must cost a lot more than 250000 USD a year. That might cover the staff at Montecito (gardener, nanny, cleaning etc.) but they also have staff at Archewell, for their communications etc. Some of them are really high profile people who most probably come with high salaries. I would guess their staff expenses are at least 2 Mio USD a year plus 3 Mio security, so I think their living expenses including expenses for their businesses are more around 7 mio. Though of course those businesses then earn money. In the long run, I hope they make so much money now that they can live off the interests accrued on their capital in later years. With the Spare income and the Netflix income, they are already halfway there. Anyone in similar business who could estimate what Meghan earns with AsEver? (I would be so curious, but have no clue at all how much money one can make in that sector). I would not (and I am sure Harry does not) count on Charles leaving him anything.

    • Carmella Richards says:

Yeah, I don’t know about Charlie leaving them money, but I do hope that he leaves something for the kids. Luckily, Oprah and Perry r godparents so they should get a nice sum for them.

Also I find it interesting and great that the parents of their friends at school respect their privacy and haven’t sold any pictures ir talked about them. Meghan does attend her kids’ friends parties.

    • tamsin says:

How the RR wish they had access to the finances of the Sussexes when they should be going over Charles’s and William’s with a fine tooth come!

My understanding is that to avoid inheritance taxes, the royal private fortune goes directly to from monarch to monarch. Elizabeth took care of all her children during her life time. Each of her children were given estates. She gave Anne and Andrew estates. Anne still runs hers. Andrew made a mess of his finances and sold his original estate and was given Royal Lodge after that. I would hazard a guess that when it came to Edward, he just got a very a lease on a very big Crown Estate. It seems that the late Queen took care of homes for her children when they married. Charles only had Harry to take care of when he married and he began by saying he couldn’t afford to fund Meghan for royal work. They got a grace and favour home from the Queen which Charles took away. I don’t imagine that Harry will ever get a cent or a keepsake from Charles. I would bet that the only Windsor money Harry will have ever gotten would be his inheritance from Diana.

I think Oprah has said that she is not a godparent to the Sussex children. She may be included in the trio of women Harry refers to as his “godmothers” because they have given him moral support and advice. For sure it’s obvious to everyone though that the Sussexes need to earn a lot of money to secure the future of their family.

    • sunnyside up says:

They could sell their enormous house and buy a more modest one and the change could provide them with a comfortable income for the rest of their lives.

    • Anon says:

Archewell expenses would be covered by the foundation, those listed here are their personal expenses.

  12. Tessa says:

The dm has no clue about their finances. Some bots believe all the dm stories though

  13. Anne-Marie says:

I would think they earn quite a lot from their public Speaking engagements as well.

  14. MikeB says:

Every cost is pure speculation, the Mail doesn’t have access to H&M’s finances. What business is it of the Mail’s what H&M’s finances are any way? They have no idea what the staffing costs are because they don’t know how many staff they have, all this time and they have neve been able to identify one Montecito employee.

  15. Bean says:

Californian here – there is NO way their property taxes are only $68k a year. Mine are 2/3 of that and my house cost a lot less than theirs did. No actual research was done on this – she was pulling numbers out of her hiney.

    • B says:

No actual research is ever done on a daily mail article lol.

    • Betsy says:

As a former real estate reporter, I know that prop taxes are public record.

In the Hamptons where I live, one of the most expensive enclaves in the world, Sagaponack, has very low taxes because there are practically no year round kids to educate. I know Cali does it different than New York, but I find you really can’t generalize.

    • Tami says:

Property taxes are public record in CA. They bought it at the distressed price of 14Mish I think. Which was an absolute steal. Nowhere near what it would appraise for today.

  16. Mina_Esq says:

It’s always funny to me when these people ignore the magic of compound interest and assume that H and M keep their money in a chequing account of some sort. I bet that returns on investments are easily funding their $4 million per year lifestyle. Like, they are not just withdrawing money from a pile of cash in their sock drawer.

  17. MinnieMouse says:

Am I misremembering, or wasn’t there a report that Harry put all of the Spare royalties to charity, not his pocket?

    • Lili says:

i think it was 1.5mil to sentable, i’m not sure aboutthe rest. the money they got from winning their cases is what goes to charity

    • sevenblue says:

They never said they are giving all their money away to charities. You realize they have high-level security expense? In some of their projects, they gave a certain percentage to the charities and they announced the charity and the amount each time.

  18. Moniquep says:

So even putting aside all their other resources and only taking into account the Netflix earnings at the low end of $10m per year. If their annual living expenses are $4m, that’s $6m in the bank.

The BM and so called royal experts are twisting themselves into such pretzels, determined to convince themselves and anyone who will listen, that H&M are failing miserably, about to be broke, and desperate to come crawling back.

    NOT!!!!

  19. Henny Penny says:

A detailed financial report on two independently wealthy private citizens living in an entirely different country, but total silence on the cost to tax payers from supporting a handful of lazy, entitled do-nothings who’ve bellied themselves up to the public trough and are feasting like thieves on money and real estate that should belong to the people?

When will enough British people finally have enough of this nonsense? And I wonder if there will be any correlation to enough Americans having had enough?

  20. Lady Esther says:

Besides ignoring the revenue from Spare, this article also doesn’t take into account Harry’s lawsuit payouts, notably the Murdoch wiretapping settlement which I still believe had to be north of 50 million.

    The Sussexes are doing fine!
