Kate Hudson tells her kids ‘Don’t let anybody tell you how to do your thing’

Kate Hudson has a new movie coming out this Christmas called Song Sung Blue. It costars Hugh Jackman and is based on a 2008 documentary about a couple from the Milwaukee area who formed the famous Neil Diamond tribute band Lightning & Thunder. Kate’s been on a music kick lately. Last year, she released her debut pop album, Glorious.

Song Sung Blue just premiered at AFI Fest 2025. Kate walked the red carpet with her husband Danny Fujikawa, who co-wrote some of the songs on her album. She seemed in good spirits and talked about how happy she was to do a music-based movie. She also talked about how her three children, each of whom have musician fathers, are musically inclined and shared the advice she’s given them.

Kate Hudson has some words of wisdom for her three children. Speaking on the red carpet at the premiere of her latest film Song Sung Blue at AFI Fest 2025 on Sunday, Oct. 26, the actress, 46, opened up about her hopes for her kids’ futures.

After revealing that sons Ryder, 21, Bingham, 14, and daughter Rani, 7, are “all musical,” the Running Point star then shared some advice that she gives her brood with E! News.

“Just to make tons of mistakes and have fun and be rebellious,” she explained of what she tells her children. “Don’t let anybody tell you how to do your thing, you know? Be good people — that’s all I care about, and have real self-possession.”

But her main wish is that her kids are “content.”

“I want them to be happy — internally happy — and actually live just a good, like, content life,” Hudson continued to the outlet. “That’s what I want.”

“Don’t let anybody tell you how to do your thing.” The advice to be good and have “real self-posession” is solid. I have two boys, and I try to impart this wisdom onto both of them on the daily. It’s tough, though, when you’re a kid and feel pressured to fit in and do what everyone else is doing. One day you’re happily wearing mismatched knee-high socks that suit your quirky personality and the next day, you’re chanting ”six-seven” in plain black ankle socks with your classmates despite not knowing what it means. (Note: My friend’s teenage daughter gave me the full rundown on six-seven and I feel cool to be in the know.)

Fashion time! At the premiere, Kate had crimped hair and wore a silky gown in a beautiful amber color that’s perfect for fall. Danny was equally representing fall in a brown pinstripe suit. I will never not love bold, colorful clothing, so I think they both looked great. Hugh Jackman was also there with Sutton Foster. I didn’t realize this, but it was their first time walking the red carpet as an official couple. They kept their style pretty basic, with Hugh wearing a simple black suit and Sutton in a black slip dress that looked so similar to her dress from last week’s Fetch Pet Gala that I had to double-check that it wasn’t the same one (that dress was strapless). She looked very nice, but it was kind of boring.

  1. ABCD says:

Ryder looks so much like Kate looked like before surgeries and bleached hair

  2. Indica says:

That header picture… if it wasn’t for the fact that the headline said ‘Kate Hudson’ I wouldn’t have known it was her. She always used to look so much like her mother, now it’s ‘…who?’

  3. Sara says:

Have you seen Chris robinson? Ryder looks like his dad. And Kate still looks like herself. Yes, A bit less like her mom, but still like herself.

  4. Teddy says:

Penny Lane — still one of the great performances. We recently watched a director’s cut with more and longer Penny Lane scenes and she really made that movie. (Well, she and Phillip Seymour Hoffman)

  5. Heidi says:

“Just to make tons of mistakes and have fun and be rebellious,” she explained of what she tells her children.
That is absolutely ridiculous, only someone who comes from privileged white, multigenerational fame and wealth would have the audacity to say something like that.
Just to make tons of mistakes and have fun and be rebellious, yeah… that is NEVER the advice brown or black people would ever give, let alone say to their kids. So fucking tone deaf!!!!
