Jennifer Garner: Ben Affleck would listen to Beyonce’s ‘Halo’ on repeat for hours

Have you guys watched The Rip on Netflix? It’s the Joe Carnahan action-drama starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck (and Teyana Taylor, Kyle Chandler and Steve Yeun). It’s sort of okay? It actually wasn’t what I expected – I thought it would really be a bonanza of dirty cop shenanigans, but it isn’t. There are so many plot holes and they never explained why two elite Miami cops both have Boston accents. But I digress, it’s a perfectly enjoyable movie. Ben’s pretty good in it. Well, this Affleck story crossed my feed and it made me really like Ben for a change. Ben’s ex-wife Jennifer Garner was talking about how Ben is one of those people who can listen to the same song on repeat for a very long time. When Ben was working on The Town in 2009, he apparently listened to Beyonce’s “Halo” on a near-constant loop.

Jennifer Garner laid bare ex-husband Ben Affleck’s obsession with Beyoncé’s music in candid new comments.

“Do you guys do this? Do you listen to a song over and over again?” the “Alias” alum asked the audience during an appearance at Diesel, A Bookstore on Thursday.

“I just want to tell you something. I’ve survived this. I have lived through it,” she said.

The “13 Going on 30” actress, 53, then recalled supporting Affleck, also 53, as he filmed “The Town” back in 2009.

“Ben Affleck listens to a song over and over,” she said, according to People. “I had a three-month-old and a three-year-old living in a rental in Cambridge, Mass., while he was shooting ‘The Town,’” she shared. “And he listened to Beyoncé‘s ‘Halo,’ and I would be nursing.”

Affleck directed, co-wrote and starred in the 2010 crime thriller, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival that year and went on to nab a Producers Guild of America nomination for best film — as well as two wins from the National Board of Review.

My confession is that I can also listen to one song on a loop for hours, especially when I’m walking (not so much when I’m working or writing). You just sort of zone out and it becomes a sort of background soundtrack. I’ve even done that with “Halo” – it’s a great song to have on a loop. While I love Beyonce and her music, not every one of her songs works on a loop like that. Recently, I discovered that I can listen to Bey’s “Spaghetti” on a loop. What else? “Flawless” works. “Formation” doesn’t. “Partition” works, as does “Jealous.” Anyway, I didn’t know Ben was such a Beyonce fan. Or maybe he just f–king loved “Halo.” It was one of her biggest hits for a reason, that song is immaculate. Other artists’ songs which are good for repeat plays: Hozier’s “Arsonist’s Lullabye,” Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer,” Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain,” Jeff Buckley’s “So Real,” Radiohead’s “Creep.”

    This is quite wholesome.

Agree. A headline that didn’t send me into fight or flight.

And I’m with Ben, this is a great song. I remember when it came out and I probably had it on loop too!

Just the headline here gave me an immediate chuckle

Same. I am guilty of this too, but I wear earbuds, so no innocents are harmed, lol. I can only imagine the looks and sighs I would get from my dogs. I can tell they are reaching the end of their patience with my Heated Rivalry rewatches.

  3. Tis True, Tis True says:

Must confess I have a strong aversion to pop/rock ballads. Love Beyonce, but that era had a lot of skips for me.

I am someone who listens to songs on repeat though. Latest has been a short playlist of Jamie Cullum’s Song Society covers, Boyfriend, Bury a Friend, Shape of You.

    Loopers unite.

I read it as Jennifer Lopez which made it infinitely funnier for some reason

She’s never gonna beat the allegations, I fear. Cause what was the context of her bringing this up? She’s at a bookstore, making an appearance…and she randomly brings up a story about Ben listening to a song on repeat from *counts fingers* 17 years ago? Weird.

She’s a whole, grown woman with an entire life of memories that don’t center him right? Before, during, and after their marriage? So just because “they were married, they have kids together!” doesn’t excuse her being the other slice of bread in this weird ass JenBenJen sammich.

Garner was at the Los Angeles bookstore Diesel, A Bookstore with author Laura Dave and Rita Wilson, who costars with Garner in the Apple TV series The Last Thing He Told Me, based on Dave’s book. Dave joined them for a talk about the book’s sequel The First Time I Saw Him. During the talk, Garner noted that Dave likes to work while listening to music, much like her ex. “I love that because the only other person now besides Ben that I’ve heard that does that was [screenwriter] Tom Stoppard,” Dave responded. “And when I heard that, I thought, okay, I’m in some good company.”

    • Lens says:

It wasn’t random, Lily. The author of the book she just did a series for, Laura Dave, said she listened to Taylor Swift’s “Cardigan” OVER and OVER during the writing of the book. She said she does that for every book she writes and each has a song she listens to over and over. So you can rest assured, Lily, it was very pertinent to the conversation she was having at the book signing. Geeez!

This is common for those with ADHD.
