They’re trying to praise Princess Kate for her ‘grandpacore’ style

One of the greatest fashion trends of the past decade was when everyone wanted to look like a 50-something mom in a Nancy Myers movie. They called it “coastal grandma” or something like that. In essence, you were supposed to look like you spent most of your time at your fabulous beach house, wearing comfortable oversized cardigans, sandals and light cashmere. It was awesome. I would even argue that the Duchess of Sussex’s style is a version of “coastal grandma” – like, she’s got the “moneyed Montecito” style variant. Why am I talking about this? Because they’re saying that the Princess of Wales is rocking “grandpacore.” LMAO. You mean to tell me that the so-called savior of British fashion, the founder of the apocryphal “Kate Effect,” the woman whose favorite labels regularly go into bankruptcy, that same woman dresses like a British grandpa??

The Princess of Wales is renowned for her elegant signature style – but she switched things up during a trip to Scotland. While learning how to weave tartan with Prince William, Kate embraced the grandpacore trend in a Fair Isle wool vest.

Part of Bamford’s autumn/winter 2018 collection, the sleeveless, button-down design incorporated a playful heart motifs in a warming chocolate brown palette. Kate layered the piece over a Zara turtleneck, completing the look with a kilt from Le Kilt’s collaboration with Johnstons of Elgin and Tod’s suede ankle boots.

After gaining momentum in 2024, the grandpacore trend – also known as eclectic grandpa – is enjoying a revival, with celebrities and fashion editors alike embracing nostalgic knitwear, corduroy trousers and loafers. The trend focuses on comfortable, vintage-inspired clothing, embracing quality pieces such as knitwear – reflecting a cultural shift towards sustainability. The key is to embrace layers by mixing textures and patterns for a lived-in feel.

LMAO. While there’s definitely something to be said for sensible shoes, loose trousers and a good sweater vest, I would find it embarrassing if I was the whole-ass Princess of Wales and people were trying to praise my “grandpa style.” What’s even crazier is that even if you’re open to grandpacore, Kate is a horrible example of it! She makes grandpacore look so dull and stiff. I’ve always said this about Kate as well – one of her biggest style issues is that she clearly views her work clothes as a costume, and that comes across visually. The pieces don’t look lived-in or comfortable or authentic to Kate. She just looks like she’s cosplaying Diana, Meghan or a grandpa.

  1. Well it seems that they are taking their lemon and trying to make lemonade. Unfortunately for them the lemon is rotten and so the lemonade is too!!

it’s not grampacore at all? lolz. it might be old and doudy but it’s very feminine. she’s not good at dressing in that more gender neutral style at all. which is fine – she should dress how she likes.

  3. Emmy Rae says:

I’m waiting for the day Kate embraces Adam Sandler style and gets a write up for it. I heard the kids (or a segment thereof) have taken to it.

Grandpa core. Huh. I think back to the Olsen twins and their oversized coats. Which is something I actually wear. Long oversized coats in the winter is my thing. Maybe I don’t understand grandpa core. Kate’s clothes are too tailored to be grandpa core or again maybe that’s me not understanding the defining traits of grandpa core. If anything, Kate is more like uniform-core. She always feels like she’s wearing a uniform to cosplay the event. Military, sporty, Diana-drag, Meghan-day, etc.

  5. Nic919 says:

Her outfits give Sears catalogue not grandpa core.

  6. Amy Bee says:

I would agree that Kate has no fashion identity of her own.

  7. Becks1 says:

She looks like a teacher from the 80s, and not in a good way.

One of the things with trends like the coastal grandma or this grandpacore style with the loafers and corduroy pants – is that you need to have a sense of style and almost whimsy to pull it off. I dont lean into the coastal grandma look at all (even though I love it) because quite frankly, I do not have that style/whimsy to pull it off. I would look like I was wearing my 90 year old grandma’s clothes, and not in a good way. If I wore corduroy pants with loafers and a grandpa sweater, I would look like dowdy and decidedly unstylish.

But many can pull off those outfits and look great (and I am jealous!)

this is an area where I feel a smidge of sympathy for Kate, because I think she’s like me in that regard. I think she sees what someone else wears and thinks “I like that” and copies it but when she wears the exact same outfit, it just falls flat because she messes up the accessories, or her hair, or its just missing that sparkle that makes an outfit look great vs just looking like clothes. And while a competent stylist would help a great deal, a stylist couldn’t give Kate that “sparkle” or whatever. It’s not her fault, it just is what it is for some people. But she should just lean into that and stick to what works for her and not try to be a grandpa or coastal grandma or whatever. I wear a lot of jeans and sweaters or black pants with a button down to work. I basically have four different uniforms that I rotate between, and I’m fine with it. I never look like a fashion plate but I don’t think I ever look dowdy, you know? She needs to do something similar.

Now compared to Meghan, who does have that sparkle – so she can make crocs look cool again, she can wear loafers and jeans and a white button down and look like she came from a photo shoot. I could wear the exact same thing and no one would ever associate me with a photo shoot, lol.

But KP and the British press need to stop acting like Kate is some big leader in the fashion industry because she’s wearing a sweater vest from 2018.

Diane Keaton pulled this look off very well too. Her sense of whimsy made it shine.

    • Lorelei says:

@Becks, same! The difference is that by our age, we know this about ourselves and adjust accordingly. Kate does not. It’s sad.

      • Becks1 says:

Yes! I know my limitations lol. and my husband will laugh at me about it. I’ll see someone wearing something “cool” (do kids still say that??) and I’ll say something like “oh how do you think that would look on me?” and he’s just like “oh baby.” (and for the record he’s not fatshaming me or anything like that! He just means that he knows how I dress and what I like to wear.)

I did get velvet loafers from JCrew Factory that I love so maybe there’s hope lol.

But for Kate – I think thats part of why even on here we so often say she looks better in casual clothes or athleisure. It’s because that’s probably what she wears 99% of the time and what she feels more comfortable in and it probably more reflects “her.” When she tries to dress like someone else (Diana, Jecca Craig, Meghan) it looks off because at least two of those women had that “sparkle.” (I dont know about Jecca.)

  8. Beverley says:

Man, it would be a breath of fresh air if she stood up straight. Carole taught her how to snag a prince, but not how to stand and stride with good posture.

  9. KC says:

I love grandma chic, but it has to be done right with details and whimsy. It’s a twist off the old Sloane Ranger look meets Diane Keaton style. I think the key phrase is in regard to Kate is “has to be done right”. Can she do anything and can she do it with style? I prefer her evil Disney Princess look personally.

  10. Betsy says:

I am a coastal grandma and I’m not that frumpy. Love my loafers though.

  11. Judith in Ottawa says:

The worst of it is, Scotland is famous for hand-knit, REAL Fair Isle garments. She could have highlighted that heritage, instead she wears a cheap, machine-made simulacrum. Fake coals to Newcastle.

  12. QuiteContrary says:

I am grandma coastal in the spring and summer and bitchy urban dweller, dressed all in black, in the winter and fall.

    Kate is just dull.

  13. jferber says:

Becks, I was a teacher in the 80’s and dressed a hell of a lot better than Kate.
