Has Jessica Simpson gained some weight, or is it just her bad styling?

fp_4869472_simpson_jessica_ram_041910

I guess we’re not supposed to mention that Jessica Simpson is gaining weight. She’s not “fat” and I’m certainly not saying that all women have to be super-skinny, or that gaining some weight is a crime or anything like that. But Jessica herself has made talking about her body a national pastime, and she’s even promoted The Price of Beauty on the back of the hyper-criticism she received for those chili cook-off photos from last year. Of course, Jessica told Oprah those photos were after she had gained like five or ten pounds. So how much has she gained this go around? The styling never helps with her. That skirt should be dragged into the street and shot. The shirt makes her look like a linebacker. This is Jessica’s fundamental problem: she has literally no clue how to dress her figure, no matter what her weight is. She’s too dumb, I guess.

Speaking of laughing at how dumb Jessica is, Fox News Pop Tarts has an interesting piece up about whether we’re all cruel, heartless, misogynistic bitches for even paying attention to Jessica’s weight fluctuations. It’s an interesting read:

What is it about pop star Jessica Simpson that makes her the butt of so many jokes about weight and relationships? Last February, singer and reality star Jessica Simpson made headlines after debuting an apparently fuller-than-usual figure while performing at a country music chili cook-off. But 14 months later, why are her weight fluctuations and personal misfortunes continuing to be spotlighted and satirized?

Over recent months, it seems Simpson has been attacked from almost every angle. Last year, a cartoon skit which aired during Fox’s NFL Sunday showed Tony Romo’s teammates laughing at his former girlfriend’s “big” size, and rapper Eminem made a music video starring a “heavy” Simpson look-alike in her daisy dukes with a hamburger in hand.

Then, MTV cartoon “Popzilla” made fun of her “bad luck” while sitting in the bleachers at a Dallas Cowboys Football Game. Even President Obama dryly commented on Simpson being “in a weight battle, apparently” when it was pointed out that his family portrait was bumped from the cover of Us Weekly to make way for the songstress’s weight issues.

Fox’s “Glee” was the latest outlet to take a shot at Simpson in their premiere episode last week.

“Sometimes I wish I could be more like Coach Tanka,” Finn said in a voiceover. “He pulled a Jessica Simpson — you know, lost his fiancé, gained 40 pounds, stopped showering, and everyone acts like that is totally normal.”

Attacks such as these beg the question, why is everyone obsessed with attacking Jessica?
According to Dr. Dionne Bennett, a Women’s Studies Professor at Loyola Marymount University, these “jokes” aren’t just attacks on Jessica; they are attacks on all women.

“It is a way of telling us that even the most physically admired women will be the objects of ridicule if they gain weight or ‘lose’ their beauty. It is also a way of telling women that our looks are the only source of our value so that if our looks are diminished, our overall value is also diminished,” Bennett said. “The attacks are also engaging the idea that everybody has the right to look at, talk about, and judge women’s bodies, something we rarely do to men.”

Simpson’s weight fluctuations and lack of luck in the love department are certainly nothing abnormal for Hollywood, or for the average American. So is Simpson being unfairly targeted? Or is it simply that we notice her more?

“No one really cared [when actress Kirstie Alley gained weight] because she’s Kirstie Alley,” said New York-based PR and Social Media expert, Peter Shankman. “But when it’s Jessica Simpson, a young girl who’s gorgeous and is beautiful and all of sudden gained all this weight, it’s a different story. I guarantee you if Paris Hilton gained 50 pounds, it’d be the same thing.”

And while Simpson herself has managed to stay strong throughout this seemingly never-ending ordeal, she told Tarts she had to work hard to pull herself out from the “very dark place” that the sudden negative attention forced her into.

“It was really hard on me and I felt I needed to find some light in the very dark place I was in,” Simpson recently told Pop Tarts while discussing the inspiration behind her new VH1 reality show “Price of Beauty.”

“I realized that people’s judgments about me and about my weight are really just none of my business, it’s not something I should be listening to or taking to heart. People can say whatever they want to say and I cannot take it personally.”

A rep for Simpson declined comment for this article.

So seeing as Simpson chose a career in the spotlight and consciously put herself out there to be judged, does she bring this ridicule on herself?

“I cannot believe that she views any publicity as bad publicity. This is a woman who let her dad talk her into turning her new marriage in a reality television show, in effect dooming it from the start,” said Terri Dougherty, author of “People in the News – Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey.”

“Like a child constantly trying to get attention, her entire life seems to revolve around the phrase, ‘Look at me!’ so if her weight has turned into a punch line on a television show, I don’t see this hurting her or her career.”

And Simpson’s close friend, personal assistant and co-star in “Price of Beauty” Cacee Cobb believes this experience has had a positive effect on the pop star’s life.

“This show was really important to her to spread the word so girls don’t have to go through what she had just gone through the past year,” Cobb told Pop Tarts. “She was unfortunately under so much scrutiny, that if she could save one person from having to go through that… it was really amazing to be a part of such a moving mission.”

Is this why no one is really talking about Jessica most recent weight gain? We all feel like we’re kicking a puppy by criticizing her? I’ll say the same thing I said about Mischa Barton – I don’t really care if Jessica or anyone else puts on some weight or whatever. What I think is fair game is a celebrity’s styling, their clothing, their hair, their makeup. And for that, Jessica almost always gets a big fat FAIL.

let her wear what she wants jeezz.

  2. Heaven-bound says:

Who cares if she gained weight, we all fluctuate in weight all the time. And who does not have a fashion “faux pas”, once in a while? She’s allowed.

  3. Dobben says:

Agree with the above comments. FFS, lay off her already!

  4. JulieNewmar says:

Bad styling and a tiny bit of pudge..but that’s life.

  5. jessica says:

She looks absolutely fine to me.

  6. bite me says:

    simpleton needs a new stylist

  7. t-rae says:

Jessica doesn’t know how to compliment her figure with nice clothes. So she’s so dumb too. Who cares??

  8. Hautie says:

Oh good grief. She has not gained any weight. All she has gained is a bad sense of style.

And yes that skirt does need to be shot. haha!

What puzzles me about Jessica’s clothes, is she used to dress sooo cute. During the marriage to Lachey and even a year or so afterwards… she constantly wore cute dresses and great heels. Simple hair do’s and great makeup.

She never roamed around at public events looking like death warmed over.

But in the last 3-4 years she has been one fashion disaster after another. The question really needs to be, is who used to dress her? Where have they gone?

It sure as heck was not that batty Paves. Whom she really does need to fire.

Geez, I can not believe he is some so call re-known hair guy. Yet, he lets her out, in his presence, looking like hell.

If Jessica had any kind of decent styling influence, she would look incredible. You know she has a closet full of great clothes going unused.

  9. Risa says:

I really think we need to lay off any weight issue for anyone who is healthy… I mean I have gained 40lbs in two years! But I am still fit and active and no one threw a hissy fit about it!! A lot of people said I NEEDED more weight on me beings I am tall!

I just makes me so frustrated that we even talk about this because she is gorgeous and NOT overweight!

  10. Beck says:

I don’t like articles like this. Did she gain a few pounds? Who cares.

  11. Heaven-bound says:

    @ Lynn

Are you kidding? Please read your own comment again, can you find your own grammatical errors?
You are beyond ridicules!! With that statement.

I love you Celebitchy and Kaiser.

  12. Eileen Yover says:

I think its bad clothes and maybe a pound or two.

  13. Jeri says:

Jessica’s whole career has been based on her face & figure (thanks Daddy). That’s why people comment, it’s not like she can fall back on her talent because other then flaunting her looks there is no talent. That is how she & Joe have presented her and now they can thank themselves for the fruit of their labors.

  14. sassy says:

people focus on her weight and style because that is all they have to focus on. She doesn’t do anything else! Any great albums coming out? No? Oh, then a movie perhaps? No? Hmmmm. Hey! Look at those tits!

  15. Juicein LA says:

I love Jess and it is like kicking a puppy to mention her weight gain- even when she dresses so hideously.

Part of the problem is perception- she is a short girl, with muscular legs and a bootie…so 3 pounds on her figure is going to look like 15 pounds on any taller less muscular celeb.

I just wish maybe we could let her be for a bit.

  16. Maritza says:

She definitely is letting herself go, she probably stopped exercising and just doesn’t care because she has no guy in her life. She’ll lose weight when she gets some movie offer or finds herself some guy, as long as she’s happy…

  17. lynn says:

@heaven-bound i don’t like when anyone calls someone dumb. and i am entitled to my opinion. and please, i suggest you use spell check before responding to a post on grammar.

  18. suz says:

This article caused me to headdesk so many times. The Obama quote is soooooooo out of context it’s not even funny (and Fox News would never do that, lol), and then they mention “imagine if Paris Hilton gained 50 lbs;” as if Jess gained 50 lbs! COME ON! I’m no fan of hers, but this is beyond preposterous.

  19. freckles says:

    That outfit is God awful.

  20. Vanessa says:

Tough call, though she’s a beautiful girl regardless of either of those things.

  21. Q says:

Whatever. She appears to be wearing a stretchy dress with a big shirt over it – because she just got off an airplane! Good lord, I might be a string bean but you do NOT want to see what I look like after an international flight. It ain’t flattering.

I don’t care what she weighs. I hate stories that make a big deal about it. I agree that she’s made a career out of being a cute blond, but that’s no reason to F with her mental health by calling her fat. Even if she was fat, which she isn’t.

I do wish she’d get a better stylist. The infamous “mom jeans” from last year were apparently a size 4. I believe it. She just needs to dress her body better.

For pete’s sake, can we direct our collective distaste to her sister who carved up her face to the point that she’s unrecognizable??

  22. JPX says:

Simpson has made a career out of her looks so it’s perfectly natural that she’s going to be held accountable when she becomes fat. Seriously, what is she really known for? She’s a failure at everything she’s ever done including music, movies, television, marriage. She needs to realize that the only reason she was ever popular was because she was attractive. Her dumbness was tolerated when she looked good but it isn’t so cute when she’s clearly overweight.

  23. Squirrel says:

She is a walking job-seeker. Could some everyday – fashion brand please give her a contract and dress her decently? She is an attractive woman (with or without more weight) and scrubs up really well. Either that or she needs an honest friend.

  24. GatsbyGal says:

Bad, bad, awful clothes. Not fat.

  25. terry says:

leave jess alone…her oobs are great and she is totally hot1

  26. missy says:

    her stylist should be fired.
I couldnt care less about her or any other celebs weight.

  27. dread pirate cuervo says:

All that’s missing from this outfit is Britney’s pink wig.

    Tips on short girl dressing:

1)short skirts & short shorts make your legs look longer.
2)low-waisted jeans are your friend; high-waisted jeans are your enemy.

  28. Lil says:

    Heaven-bound, you r so right!

  29. Tru says:

aww, leave her alone-we dog her but PRAISE those KarTRASHian trollops!
full of plastic and fake weave down to their butts! pretending to be Hollywood’s elite and apparently some folks are buying it.

its three of them and they don’t do anything but famewhore. add more fake hair and change clothes for the media.

At least Jessica had/has a career and I was in love w/her show w/Nick!

  30. lucy2 says:

If she weren’t being attacked about it all the time, she’d probably be pretty happy at her current weight, which is probably her natural figure. I don’t think she is naturally a stick skinny girl, I think she about starved herself back during that movie she was in, and no matter what she is by no means fat.
That said, she needs to find a stylist to help her dress for her figure. Most of the time I find her annoying and dumb, but I do feel bad when people make fun of her weight.

  31. padiddle says:

@dread pirate – I’m very short (only 5’2″) and I find that low rise jeans look wayyy worse on me than high or medium rise. They only seem to accentuate the fact that I have super short little stumps for legs, whereas my high rise jeans make it look like my legs go up a little higher. I do think people that have a little bulge in the middle (not anything wrong with it, I think Jess looks fine) should avoid high waisted jeans, however.
Just my two cents as a shortie, but whatever Jess does she should chuck what she’s wearing now, because it’s not working for her body type.

  32. snapdragon says:

that skirt would not look good on anyone. other than that i think she looks fine.

  33. JC126 says:

Terrible styling. It adds a few pounds, that outfit.
As for criticizing her, as much as I don’t care for her, I feel bad for her. She gets ragged on so much and doesn’t seem like a bad person, just kind of dopey.

  34. TG says:

When did she ever lose weight to begin with? She is very pretty when she is in more of a natural state with hair, makeup and clothes. Wish I looked like her, though, I wouldn’t want those big boobs, maybe a C cup would do it.

  35. Camille says:

You could tell for a couple of months now that she had gained a bit of weight (you can see it in her face if no where else!), so this is mainly a weight issue for her but also the girl can not dress to save herself. She has no idea- about anything apparently. She should accept her natural weight (which this probably is) and learn to dress herself accordingly.

  36. mario d'italia says:

Leave this beautiful WOMAN alone! She can show these starving heads what it looks like to have some killer curves.
Think Marilyn Monroe and leave her alone
    you miserable jerks

  37. Paula says:

Jessica has made a career out of her face and figure. Athletes, singers, and entertainers whose performance declines dramatically are targets of ridicule, too.

  38. t says:

She brings this all on herself. Just when talk dies down about her weight, there she is fanning the embers with an Oprah interview about it, or a photoshopped magazine cover with a “You Call This Fat” banner, or a “It’s A Chubby World After All” reality show.

People would stop talking about it, if she would, but we all know that’s not going to happen unless she lands herself another famous boyfriend whose fame she can leech off. As always, her body (whatever size it is)is the only thing keeping her famous.

And she needs to stop with this crap about doing the reality show to save the chubby children. She is doing the reality show to try to stay famous…her acting and singing aren’t going to do it. She didn’t care about the the message she was sending children when she was getting hosed down in her bikini while gyrating on the Dukes of Hazzard mobile. Then, like now, she’ll do anything for fame.

  39. benny says:

She looks ok to me (the clothes are ugly) even with some extra weight. I think her bigger problems are lack of any discernable talent, and insecurities that cause her to latch on to any man that comes along. But her figure is fine.

  40. Ophelia says:

Christ! I love this blog and everything but it’s mostly women who read it and as a woman I’m so tired of “weight gain” stories. I’d assume the writers are women too, so I would think you’d understand that a woman’s weight fluctuates. She could be on her period FFS. Give her a frickin break, she’s beautiful no matter what weight she’s been. She’s still completely healthy and I’ve never seen her overweight.

  41. Ana says:

She needs to take Christina Hendrick’s advice and always make sure her waist is showing.

  42. My2Cents says:

    Nasty nasty nasty Kaiser!
    Good onya!
I just cant stop shaking my head about this one.

  43. Me says:

She’s the same height as me, and I can tell you that just 3 pounds makes me look totally different. There’s just no place for it to hide. Jeebus, leave her alone. A woman’s weight can fluctuate as much as eight pounds a month simply from how much water we’re retaining, so says Oprah.

I don’t even like her that much, but this is getting ridiculous. She’s a good looking woman and people need to shut up before we warp an entire generation of young girls.

  44. DrM says:

Can we find something else to talk about besides women and weight CB? I’m a bit over this topic eh?

  45. Zelda says:

You know why we talk about it? Because she is shoved down our throats despite the fact that she has nothing to say of value, no talent, and is not selling anything worth buying.

There is literally nothing else to talk about with this regards to woman. She has NO OTHER value in the media.

She needs to clue into that fact and go home.

  46. Luci says:

I think simpson’s the most naturally beautifull popstar with mariah carey
but they both need stylists (or new ones)
though both always have the most perfect hair and makeup

  47. Chessie says:

She’s gorgeous, no matter what she wears or how much she weighs.

  48. Michelle says:

It is weird how people practically tar and feather celebs like britney, jessica or mischa to the wolves once they let themselves go a bit. Isn’t the saying “we hate most in others that which we see in ourselves?” My theory is that Americans (all countries, really) like to see themselves as happy, blonde, shiny perfect people (as Britney and Jessica once were) and hate to see the reality ie. society’s obesity battle, ignorance etc. They are DEFINITELY too harsh on these women though- the disgusting comments made by those sports people about Jessica’s weight were sickening.

  49. bellaluna says:

We talk about it because we can relate. It happens to most of us women.

What we can’t relate to: chicks who release pornos to get famous; tattooed trollops who bang famous people (or people married to famous people) to get famous; people (like Hohan, for instance) who are allowed free reign to act like total asses, drinking & drugging their way through life and never taking responsibility or being held accountable for any of it; people who have billion dollar homes in 5 countries and treat it like it’s no big deal; people who’d rather spend the price of a nice house on plastic surgery and end up looking way worse than before, and all that other crap we post about. For those people, we have no mercy, because they deserve none. For Jessica, she could be anyone who had an overbearing, sleezy, stage parent that helped ruin her marriage.

  50. Jessica says:

OMG! Poor Jessica! people are making fun of her again.

Want to know why people can’t stand her?

It’s because SHE brings this all on herself.

Maybe if she was not such an attention seeking desperate media whore, people would not say anything about her.

If Jessica does not want people talking about her weight then SHE NEEDS TO SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT IT!!!!

  51. -silvrmn- says:

Articles like this make me laugh. Who of you doubts that there is any room in which Jessica Simpson wouldn’t be the immediate center of attention – men and women alike? And the hottest?

  52. MissyAggravation says:

Gotta love the faux-feminist editorial coming out of Fox News. That just made my day.

  53. t says:

Of course Jessica would be the center of attention in any room, silvrmn-:. Having traced the foul odor fogging the air to the flatulent woman dangerously teetering on her platform shoes because of her dad’s amorous thrusting against her leg, people couldn’t help but stare.
