Vanity Fair spotlights hot soccer dudes for the June cover story

world-cup-blog

This is kind of disappointing, except for all of the hot, half-naked men. Vanity Fair’s June issue is devoted to soccer (or “football”) and the World Cup, which starts soon, in June as a matter of fact. The complete online article is here, but Vanity Fair also released an excerpt and a couple of photos. I know the cover is poor quality, I’ll change it out when I find a better one. Here you go (there’s video of Annie Leibovitz’s photo shoot at the bottom):

In 38 days, it begins. The World Cup captivates more people around the globe than any other event, sporting or otherwise. Every four years, in pubs and corporate boardrooms, thatched huts and flophouses, fans of “the Beautiful Game” gather around televisions and transistor radios—and now, for the deep of pocket, iPhones and 3-D flat screens—to cheer for their heroes. They watch and listen by the billions, holding their breath at every corner kick, falling to their knees or leaping for joy at every goal scored. That this year’s tournament is in South Africa, where apartheid was the law of the land until 1994, only adds to the heightened sense of celebration—this is about a whole lot more than just soccer.

For the June issue of Vanity Fair, Annie Leibovitz set out to capture some of the sport’s biggest stars, including Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, Ivory Coast’s Didier Drogba, Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o, and Brazil’s Kaká. Leibovitz’s portraits are, well, revealing. And underwear has never looked so patriotic. In America, these men might not enjoy the same name recognition as the stars of the N.F.L.—that game that we call football—but for most of the planet, they are more than just showstoppers. They are gods.

A. A. Gill, in his accompanying June-issue essay, captures just how important football (don’t you dare call it “soccer,” he warns) and the World Cup are to the 6.8 billion of us who live on Planet Earth. “Football took to the world pitch at about the same time as the modern independent nation-state,” Gill writes. “After a flag, a national anthem, and a press release decrying Yankee imperialism, the next thing newly minted nations do is build a stadium and come up with a national grudge match.”

Grudges old and new will be settled (or worsened) beginning on June 11, as South Africa opens the World Cup in Soweto against Mexico. Must-see games abound from there on, with England vs. U.S.A. (June 12) and most any matchup from the so-called Group of Death—Ivory Coast vs. Portugal (June 15), Brazil vs. Ivory Coast (June 20), Portugal vs. Brazil (June 25)—topping the list from the opening round.

You don’t have to be a footie fan to enjoy the tournament. (How many of you follow swimming when it’s not the Olympics and Michael Phelps?) To keep up with all the news and festivities, check in every day with our soccer football blog, Fair Play, which will be filing from South Africa . And as you’re watching and reading, remember the closing quote to Gill’s essay, from the great Scottish player and coach Bill Shankly: “Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.”

[From Vanity Fair]

Sort of interesting. Wasn’t it at the last World Cup that Frenchman Zinedine Zidane head-butted that Brazilian Italian dude? Yes. That was kind of awesome, and if soccer players promised more stuff like that, maybe American audiences would finally embrace soccer completely – although I’ve read it is becoming more popular here.

Anyway, the video is great – and what’s really nice is to see how friendly players of different nationalities are with each other. Plus, most of them are smoking hot, with insane bodies. Swoon.

  3. elisa says:

he was from Italy, not brazil…the guy who zidane head-butted. Go BRAZIL!!! time to bring home the gold!!!

  4. asiont says:

Eto’o and Kaka are the hottest!

when it comes to Cristiano Ronaldo… well, he always looks like a douche

  5. QB says:

I love Kaka he looks so akward and uncomfortable.

People can say what they want about Cristiano but they can’t denied that he is super talented and haves a body to die for.

I’m sad that Fabio Cannavaro is not in the pics.

  6. Milan says:

Sigh, they are all hot except Christiano Ronaldo, who lost any credibility when he dipped his wick in Paris juice. And no, i’m afraid soccer will never catch on in America. American’s love action in their sports, football, baseball etc. Soccer on the other hand is a snooze fest, no one attacks anymore, it’s constant defence. Boring!

I am not looking forward to the world cup, where the entire house will be taken over by soccer matches. Sit there for two or three hours waiting for something to happen….hell to the no! The only thing worse then watching soccer is watching cricket! Grrrr!I’ll always hate that sport, forcing us to come cheer for our loser school team on weekends, like that helped!

  7. QB says:

Since when is Baseball action pack??

In soccer something is always happening , in Baseball you can’t go hours without something happening.

  8. Giraffe99 says:

@Milan football tedious just one word BARCELONA besides isn’t action and baseball an oxymoron

  9. heb says:

    OMG!!! BRAZIL!!!?!@#?!#?!!!!ONE!!!!

  10. an says:

Ricardo Kaka the one in the jeans, is the hottest and the nicest sportist.
They have amazing bodies but not overly buff like American footballers who all appear to be on steroids.

  11. canadianchick says:

Mmm.yummy..thanks for the Monday pick me up.

  12. LindyLou says:

I chuckled when I saw the Ronaldo pic. Look at how he’s posing as if to say “Hey ladies – check out my package” LOL Textbook narcissist!!!

  13. LolaBella says:

@LindyLou:To be quite honest, all of their packages just seem to draw your eyes right to them, but yeah that Ronaldo looks especially cocky…I mean narcissistic. 😉

The strategic placement of various elements on their ‘flag’ underwear makes your look right ‘there’ in the top pic.

Oh, well it’s good that we ladies get some semi-nude, sexy man candy now and then on here.

  14. Miranda Ann says:

although I’ve read it is becoming more popular here.
    —————————————————

Where, exactly, did you read that?? Soccer will NEVER be popular in the States. They can’t put it on television because there is never a pause for commercials; nobody tackles anybody; the outfits are fugly; and all the players do is run up and down the field. How is that exciting? It’s popular with the children but as soon as the good ones grow up, they switch to REAL football and maybe baseball. And the ones who can’t play those two games or are not tall enough for basketball, play tennis. There’s no room for soccer in the States. Sorry, those are the facts.

Of course, for however long it lasts people will be intersted in the world cup, then POOF it’s over and we’re back to what we know and love.

I wonder how many magazines Vanity Fair hopes to sale with this cover? And, who are these people?

  15. Trillion says:

VF is gonna sell out here in San Francisco, I can tell you that much. Spesh in the Castro. C.R. is just pure cheeeze. Drogba? Hotness. I may have to start watching soccer…

  16. Larissa says:

    @Miranda Ann:
Before referring to AMERICAN football as REAL football, please educate yourself:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_(word)

As for the rest of the world, we couldn´t care less if football isn´t popular in the U.S.

  17. A Noni Mus says:

    C. Ronaldo has a freakishly long neck. Otherwise, very nice eye candy. I’ll stop pretending that I watch football (soccer) just for the game.

  18. Kali says:

I’ve known for years that the best bodies are on soccer players. I gotta pick up this issue of Vanity Fair!

  19. Deens says:

Thank you Miranda Ann for aggravating the ‘ignorant American’ stereotype.

It’s great you feel so negatively about the sport, but as VF’s writer says, it is a religion for over SIX BILLION other people on the planet. There are stadiums in Latin America that hold almost 100,000 people. I can personally guarantee that most American football, basketball, and baseball stars are total nobodies outside the US and no one could care less about the outcome of the Super Bowl or NBA championships.

  20. @ MIranda says:

The ignorants will always be the first to open their mouths.Y do they never shut up?
    FYI
The European Champions League final will be televised on a U.S. network for the first time when the May 22 match in Madrid airs on Fox.
The game at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium will be broadcast live starting at 11:45 a.m. It will be the first soccer match televised by Fox.

Ok MiRRanda Ann? There’s 30 million latinos in U.S and hundred million + Europeans that love soccer and pay european packages by direct tv or dish to watch their favorites teams. There is add space during the match but I guess u never watched one so y bother explaining
to you…just eat your mash potatoes and shut it

  21. Laura says:

It’s so sad seeing Uruguay being forgatten.Twice the world champion, the second time beating Brazil in it’s own home land with a stadium packed (210.000).
Suarez really cute and a great player.

  22. A.C. Milan rules! What’s your favorite football team? http://apps.facebook.com/my_footballteam

  23. Val Wint says:

asset boards are so pre-internet. Realistically habitancy who are looking, even not very seriously, will be searching the web for their next home. And too many boards in a road all the time makes me wonder – why does everyone want to move?

  24. This actually answered my drawback, thank you!
