Simon Monjack on his late wife Brittany Murphy: she had a heart murmur

wenn1369428
Earlier today we heard some quotes from Brittany Murphy’s widower, Simon Monjack, who told Access Hollywood that he was “destroyed” by the sudden death of his wife of two years and that he found condolences by her ex, Ashton Kutcher, “comforting.” Monjack has now talked to People Magazine, and he has a lot more to say about his wife and the circumstances surrounding her death. According to Monjack, Murphy was just a little sick before she passed and she was only on “herbal remedies,” some prescription medicine for her “female time,’” and “cough syrup.” This account contradicts a report from TMZ, which claims that a ton of prescription drugs were found in the home. (TMZ can be tasteless but they run stories on solid information from law enforcement. Radar is even reporting that the LAPD is investigating how the details of the case got out.)

Regardless of the kind of naive-sounding insistence that Brittany couldn’t have died from a drug interaction, Monjack sounds very sincere and upset in his interview with People. It’s hard to tell without seeing him, but People reports that he was sobbing throughout the interview and I would bet that the poor guy is a wreck. He also explained his reluctance to approve an autopsy, “they’re going to cut her open – I couldn’t bear it,” and that fact that Murphy had a hear murmur since she was a child. She was also a type 2 diabetic, but it’s unknown at this point if her medical conditions contributed to her death.

As for the rumors that he’s a scam artist who was controlling Brittany and may have had a hand in her death, Monjack says he understands how people can jump to conclusions because it’s hard to accept that her death was an accident.

On Brittany’s body image and rumors that she was anorexic
“These rumors that she was anorexic? It’s crazy – she was slim, but that was her natural physique.

“We are faced with this ridiculous reality that people out there believe she felt, ‘Oh, poor me, I’m fat, I’m thin.’ Brittany didn’t see beauty as a physical thing, which I’m bloody lucky for,” he said with a laugh. “I know there was a disparity in how we looked and I’m no movie star, but she always saw the person.”

On why he opposed the autopsy at first
“My initial reaction to the autopsy was – they’re going to cut her open – I couldn’t bear it. That would break her mother, but we realized we needed to know. I look forward to getting the results.”

Brittany had a heart murmur
He added that his wife of three years did suffer from a heart murmur (mitral valve prolapse), which can cause fatigue, dizziness and irregular heartbeats – but is generally not life threatening.

On the drugs she was on
“She was on herbal remedies that wouldn’t speed up her heart,” Monjack says. “There was nothing here that could endanger her; there was prescription medication in the house for her female time and some cough syrup. That was it.”

Asked point-blank if a drug overdose was a possible cause of death, Monjack replied, “I can get rid of that one right now,” he says.

On the three movies they watched Saturday night
Last Saturday, the couple just relaxed in bed, watching three movies as Murphy prepared to cast her vote as a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. They ordered Brittany’s favorite takeout – Thai food – and ate soup prepared by Murphy’s mother, Sharon, who has lived with them for 3½ years.

“She was tired and a little sad because she was sick,” Monjack says about Brittany. “She wore her pink Beverly Hills Hotel robe and monkey pajamas. We saw It’s Complicated, Public Enemy and The Princess and the Frog.

On Brittany’s mom
But he’s most worried about his mother-in-law. “I don’t know if she will ever recover, and I know when she reads all this nonsense about her son-in-law and her deceased daughter, her heart is breaking. She has lived with us and saw the love and support. I hope she stays – I can’t imagine my life without Sharon – she’s my link to Brittany.”

Questions over how she died
“This is what’s killing all of us? How did it happen? Her mum, myself and her family – we want to know why we lost our baby.”

[From People]

I really believe that this guy was a con artist, but that doesn’t mean he’s not grieving over his wife’s death or that he somehow was complicit in it. It also doesn’t mean that he somehow hooked up with Brittany to take advantage of her. Yes he was very articulate for someone who just lost the love of their life, and people are inevitably going to point that out. Everyone grieves in different ways and some people just want to talk about the loved one they lost.

A few years ago, a friend of mine died in a car accident very young. His wife talked to the local paper about it shortly afterwards and she told cute stories about her husband and sounded as in control as this guy does. She also remembered small details about her husband, which is similar to Monjack talking about Brittany in her monkey pajamas. We don’t know how much he talked to People though and they’re probably excerpting the parts that make the most sense.I think I would be a total mess if my husband died, but you never know until you’re in that terrible situation. I’m all for speculative gossip when it involves something harmless, but when someone dies their loved ones deserve the benefit of the doubt.

People confirms TMZ’s report that Brittany Murphy’s will was drawn up before her marriage to Monjack and leaves everything to her mother. He is also not listed on the title to her house despite some erroneous reports that it was in his name.

Brittany Murphy’s husband on her death: ‘my world was destroyed’

Brittany Murphy’s husband of two years, screenwriter Simon Monjack, 39, has spoken out about his wife’s sudden unexpected death. Monjack told Access Hollywood that his “world was destroyed” when Brittany passed so suddenly and later added that she was sick with laryngitis but that he didn’t think it was serious. He also praised Ashton Kutcher’s tweet about Brittany’s death, and called it “comforting”:

“My world was destroyed yesterday,” an emotional Monjack told Access Hollywood on Monday afternoon.

Following the news of the actress’ death at the age of 32 on Sunday, the Hollywood community offered an outpouring of love and condolences for Murphy – and one message, in particular, was very moving to Monjack.

“I loved what Ashton [Kutcher] wrote on Twitter. It was comforting to me,” Monjack told Access Hollywood, adding he did not know his wife’s former “Just Married” co-star personally. “I couldn’t have said it better.”

The message posted by Ashton read, “2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany’s family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon. see you on the other side kid.”

As far as what happened inside the actress’ home early Sunday, when Murphy was found unresponsive in the shower, Monjack said up to that point, it had just been “a regular day.”

“[Her mother] Sharon went into the bathroom because she had been in there a long time. Her mom screamed for me and I ran. Then called 911,” he revealed.

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a 911 call from the home at 8 AM on Sunday and eventually transported Murphy to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. She was pronounced dead at the facility at 10:04 AM.

While LA County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter told Access Hollywood the actress’ death “appears to be natural at this time” on Sunday, an autopsy was being conducted on Monday to determine the exact cause of death.

With regards to the coroner noting she may have suffered from flu-like symptoms in the days leading up to her death, Monjack admitted Murphy had been sick – but it did not seem like it was anything serious.

“She had laryngitis,” he said, noting she had seen a doctor. “She had been tired at the end of the year. She had made a couple movies.”

In his interview with Access, Monjack – who married Murphy in 2007 — took exception to the idea that his wife may have been linked to people who were bad influences on her.

“I don’t know why anyone would think that,” he said. “She found love. We found love. Brittany didn’t get to where Brittany was with anyone controlling her… Brittany was Brittany.”

In terms of the kind of goofy, some say insensitive, message that Ashton wrote after Brittany’s death, I think that people who knew Brittany might interpret it differently. It does seem kind of flippant to say “see you on the other side, kid,” but it’s also hopeful that you’ll be with the person again. Murphy was a really positive and upbeat person and she probably was “sunshine” in her husband’s life. You can imagine that remembering the good things about someone is comforting, especially after such a shock. I never know what to say to people after a tragedy and can’t fault Ashton for trying.

There’s a lot of focus on Brittany’s husband and his shady business dealings. I honestly don’t think the guy had anything to do with her death and by most accounts he was madly in love with her. Sure, he was a con artist in his way but there’s no reason to jump to the conclusion that he had anything to do with her death. He did initially object to an autopsy, but he and Brittany are Jewish and autopsies are considered desecration of the body under Jewish law.

If there’s more to this story we’re sure to hear about it, and the police are on the case. An initial investigation points to some kind of accidental death with no sign of foul play. TMZ just uncovered Brittany’s will and everything goes to her mom so it’s not like Monjack had anything to gain in her death.

Monjack may have been an enabler, however. There are stories about how he would show up drunk on set as Brittany’s handler, wreaking havoc and costing his wife roles. Late last month, Monjack was rushed to the hospital after he was found incoherent on a plane arriving at LAX. Brittany’s on set behavior was said to have been “bizarre” and people were whispering about drug use. In an appearance on the Late Late Show in April of this year, (link leads to video) Brittany talked in a faux British accent and seemed loopy and high strung. She was coherent though and still funny.

According to TMZ, there were multiple prescription drugs found by Brittany’s bedside. As Kaiser reported earlier, an initial autopsy has been completed and the coroner is waiting for the results of toxicology tests. It’s looking like some kind of accidental overdose, just like Heath Ledger’s death. I’m just hoping that all these sad, high-profile deaths of young people will help bring awareness to the dangers of mixing prescription drugs.

Brittany Murphy & husband plan to reproduce

Brittany Murphy and her incredibly creepy husband, “writer/director” Simon Monjack plan to reproduce. Now all of the internet was completely against their dating and vociferously opposed to their union – and has remained so. And while I understand that two people “in love” don’t have to take the opinions of the internet community into consideration before walking down the aisle, the fact that 102 percent of the internet hates this couple should say to them, “Hey, this is creepy and gross.” And when things are creepy and gross, you shouldn’t add a baby to the mix. Babies can sense creepy things. It makes them cry. Why would you want to make a baby cry Brittany Murphy? Can you imagine any living creature, infant or adult, animal or human, that wouldn’t let out yips of fear upon encountering Simon Monjack’s face? Me either.

Brittany Murphy and her writer-director husband Simon Monjack are just weeks away from celebrating their April 12 one-year wedding anniversary, and now the couple have set their sights on another milestone: Starting a family.

At a W Magazine-Los Angeles Contemporary Museum of Art gala over the weekend, Monjack, 38, told PEOPLE of one his goals: “…please God, next year [we're] having a family!”

Murphy, 30, added “Yes! Yes!…in about a year” they plan to expand their family. But, joked Monjack, “apprarently [sic], according to the Internet, I already have several!”

[From People]

I cannot tell you how happy I was that People made a typo in their article, so I could insert my own commentary (the [sic]) into Monjack’s quote. Thank you to whichever typist at People is pressed for time this morning. The couple goes on to say they don’t understand all the negative press they’ve received in the blogs, but that it hasn’t hurt their relationship. It’s just made them stronger, and now they avoid going online. Isn’t it amazing how all Hollywood couples say negative press just makes them stronger? Los Angeles County must be located at the vortex of Pee Wee Herman’s “Opposite Day,” and somehow the vortex leaves the area in a continual state of denial. “Everyone saying we’re gross and creepy and Simon looks like that wad of hair you pull out from the shower drain just makes our relationship stronger!” As much as I feared the release of a Marc Anthony spawn, no matter what that kid looks like it will have nothing on a Murphy/Monjack hybrid. Can you imagine trout pout attached to that hair?
