Royalist: King Charles ‘looks old. He has lost a lot of weight, he looks exhausted’

King Charles spent three days in the Bahamas, then on Thursday, he arrived in Guyana for a two-day visit. The side-chick queen did not join him, and she’s not going to turn up until Antigua and Barbuda this weekend. No one has seen Camilla either – I have no idea where she is or if she’s even in England right now. I find it interesting that Buckingham Palace simply went silent on Camilla’s absence from the tour too – you’d think they would have given some off-the-record guidance about why Camilla didn’t want to visit the Caribbean.

True to form, the palace did a lot to set the bar in hell for Charles’ tour, so if he just managed to get through the week without being soundly booed everywhere, it would be declared a success. The palace has already sent out talking points about their pleasure with how the tour is going so far and the words “diplomatic success” are already being folded into the official coverage. Interestingly, the Royalist Substack went off-script and actually said the thing: that Charles looks old, thin and exhausted.

It is, we all know, a well-worn routine. The King flies to a hot country, puts on the sunglasses and dances. But watching the Nassau footage, whether just once or several times over, and I think this one is a bit special, because he looks grateful. You can see the gratitude in his face.

You can see other things in his face too, and on this platform we don’t need to pretend otherwise. He looks old. He has lost a lot of weight, which was obvious when I saw him in person the other day, and his tailors can’t keep up with his weight loss; the suit hangs off him. He looks exhausted, just like a man of 77 who has been in cancer treatment for several years, and is working crowds in the tropics. But he also looks like a man doing exactly what he is supposed to be doing, and visibly touched that people still turn out to shake his hand. That he feels well enough to pull this off at all, after the intense fears he could drop down dead in early 2024, is the good news of the week.

[From The Royalist Substack]

I remember the last time Charles jetted off for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting – it was two years ago exactly, the same year he was diagnosed with cancer. The vibe during that Australia/Samoa trip was that this was the last time Charles would step foot in those countries. Similar vibe this time, although I would wager that in 2024, Charles had his doubts that he would still be standing in the autumn of 2026. Anyway, it’s possible that Charles’ health is stable and he just finds the travel increasingly difficult. Or it’s possible that everything is much more serious than the palace is letting on. To be fair though, if Charles had one foot in the pyre, I doubt they would let him undertake a solo tour in the Caribbean.

I think he looks much the same as usual, but what do I know.

But yes, let’s hear more about how Queen Sidepiece is noping out of most of this tour, hmmm?

    • AlpineWitch says:

She’s at home sulking that all her work to make Meghan a villain went into a puff of smoke in less than a week 🤣

Re: Charles – he has looked like that all the time since his cancer diagnosis. My husband was invited (as part of his company) to an opening done by King Charles, he didn’t go but his colleagues went and post photos on Facebook, he looked even thinner than in these photos.

    • Brassy Rebel says:

Camilla does not do well around Black people. I think the Palace is just as happy she stayed away. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • Rachel says:

He looks the same to me.

Nobody wants William to be king tomorrow more than Tom Skyes

  2. Jais says:

The royalist is Sykes? Him saying Charles is looking rough doesn’t feel that surprising. That sounds like something he’d say.

  3. Tessa says:

Scooter imo will be a lot worse. To say the least

    • SarahCS says:

I remember years back a conversation on here about what it would actually be like when the queen died and thinking for the first time about the reality of the chaos that would likely follow. That was only a warm up act for when William gets his turn. The emperor will really have no clothes and I look forward to the media trying to cover that up while increasing numbers of people who expect the monarch to do things (like opening parliament) struggle with a guy who DNGAF.

  4. Coplaya says:

Charles looks like a 77 year old man and there’s nothing wrong that. Just the idea of getting out of bed to greet crowds makes me tired and I give him credit for making the effort.

    • Brassy Rebel says:

I’m five months younger and do not have cancer 🤞. Everything gets harder when you age. I wouldn’t want to do what he’s doing. Just let me lay on the ⛱️.

      • BeanieBean says:

And wearing a 3-piece suit & no hat? Dude doesn’t have the sense god gave a goose.
And yes, everything gets harder as you age. Just getting out of bed in the morning is harder.

    • Magdalena says:

Exactly. He looks his age. There are many who are blessed to look younger than they do at this age, but Charles actually looks better than he did two years ago to me. In any event, the sunshine will do him a world of good and set him up nicely for the bleak winter months. I notice he was not wearing a hat, so he must have been instructed (or wanted) to soak up the sun.

      • BeanieBean says:

No halfway decent medical professional advises against wearing a hat in the tropics. It protects your skin, your eyes, your ears & helps keep you cool (ish).

    • Becks1 says:

Yeah, my dad is almost 77 and honestly, over the past year or so, he’s all of a sudden starting to look…well, old. And he’s in good shape (still runs 30-40 miles a week), no cancer, spends all day working on the yard and the house, etc. (well that and yelling on facebook. he loves to go on fox news etc and yell at the trump supporters.)

So Charles being 77, with cancer – i’m not surprised he’s looking old and tired on a tour like this.

As the Queen started to age, she backed away from international trips and Charles took on more of those. (I looked it up, her last tour was in 2015 to Malta for….the CHOGM opening.) And I feel like in the years before that she wasn’t traveling really – certainly she didnt travel for her jubilee in 2012. So she stopped maybe a few years older than Charles is, and she did not have cancer at the time.

But again she had Charles, Anne, Edward/Sophie, and even Andrew (ick) to step up in her place. And presumably W&K but after a few high profile tours they really scaled back until the disastrous tour in 2022.

This is when William needs to step up and fill in the gaps and he’s just refusing to do so.

      • Brassy Rebel says:

I should be more active like your dad. The less you do, the less energy you have, so good for him! The only thing we have in common is yelling at Magats on social media. 😂🤣

      • ArtHistorian says:

“This is when William needs to step up and fill in the gaps and he’s just refusing to do so.”
        – this is what has happened in the other European monarchies when the monarchs got old. The heir stepped up. Willy is rather unique among his peers that he absolutely refuses to step up and take on more duties. He likely hates his father (deservedly) but he completely lacks any sense of duty. He is all entitlement and no sense of duty, despite the media repeatedly telling us that he is dutiful. If he was he would have gotten off his arse and stepped up a long time ago. Don’t expect him to step up when he becomes King. He’ll only do what he is forced to do.

      • Becks1 says:

@Arthistorian I was JUST thinking something similar about duty. Charles has a lot of issues, but he takes his duty to the monarchy and his country very seriously (we may debate whether there should be a monarchy, but there is no doubt that Charles and QEII before him take their roles seriously.) Charles considers opening Parliament to be a very important duty/event/part of his role. William would complain about the heavy robes.

      • Brassy Rebel says:

If I didn’t know that he is just lazy, I would suspect William of being a republican.

      • BeanieBean says:

@Brassy Rebel: I don’t have FB but I’m enjoying reporting trump on his fraud-reporting hotline on his website. I throw in his offspring, vance, kushner, etc. for a little variety, but mostly it’s him. Pleases me no end.

  5. Me says:

I actually think he looks pretty good here.

  6. CM says:

I agree with the comments- he looks like a 77 year old man!! And since he’s been battling cancer, I think he’s looking rather well.

  7. anotherlily says:

He’ll be 78 in two weeks. He can walk without any kind of aid. He’s mentally sharp. Losing some height and muscle mass is normal at his age. His mother was never taller than 5ft 3 and she shrank to a very tiny lady , certainly less than 5ft. Both his parents had cancer and other ailments but both lived to their late nineties. Philip was almost 100. I wish him well and hope he enjoys a long life too.

    • Magdalena says:

Not only that, he ascended a steep flight of stairs to his aircraft, unaided, and did not look in danger of losing his balance. He seems fine. This must be Sykes wishcasting an early grave for William’s benefit again. I guess the new propaganda cheque cleared.

      • Becks1 says:

Lordy if he lives another 20 years william is going to lose it.

      • CatGotMyTongue says:

@Becks: if he lives another 20 years he will probably outlive me and I won’t get to see the Wild Willy and Katie Kant drama! 🙃

He’s not my king, and neither is the current regime here in the states. This whole scenario is giving me ‘80s flashbacks and I don’t like it. I found all those Thatcher eps on the Crown nearly unbearable. I lived through all of that in real time (including watching her with her best buddy Ronnie, taking milk away from the school children and shredding the social safety nets) and I’m like… I remember all this stuff. I have zero desire to relive it. Yet, here we are. *sigh*

Happy Halloween everyone! I’m going to be a pirate! Who else is dressing up?

  8. Amy Bee says:

He’s 77 years old and white. How else is he supposed to look?

  9. Mellyj says:

Loathsome man nevertheless I wish him good health. Plus if we’re going to be stuck with a King better him than Bulliam. Plus I like the idea of William waiting waiting waiting… for the throne.

  10. MaisiesMom says:

He looks fine for his age and is well dressed. Like, I’m sure he is tired. I’m almost 20 years younger and sitting here yawning and dragging in my pajamas because my cat woke me up at 5 AM. I think he has a lot of energy for someone his age.

  11. YankeeDoodles says:

I remember a Private Eye cover from years ago, it featured Charles & his father and the speech bubble they attributed to Philip had him chiding his son, “You look ninety if you look a day!!” …😆

  12. bisynaptic says:

Why *do* they still come out to see him? It’s so obvious he considers them inferior people, even below White British commoners.

  13. Ameerah M says:

Well they had the Queen doing work right up until the day before she died so I don’t doubt that they absolutely would have Charles traveling while ill or not feeling well.

    • QuiteContrary says:

      This was my thought, too.

They’re going to roll him out until he croaks because they likely know William will be a disaster.

  14. Eurydice says:

Sykes can’t resist – “…when I saw him in person the other day.”

  15. Harla says:

Too bad his heir isn’t willing to step in or up to offer any assistance, although Charles probably wouldn’t have accepted it. I truly believe that Willy’s reign will spell the end of the British monarchy.

  16. Kasztanka says:

He looks the way he looks—he is ill, after all—but what’s most striking is the near-total absence of media coverage, even in outlets sympathetic to the Royal Family.
Articles are buried deep—you really have to dig to find anything at all—and they keep using the same photo featuring dancers, where the feathers fill the entire frame, creating the illusion of a “crowd” :)) In other words, there’s nothing to show; things must be pretty bad.
Charles and William always use the same trick: they show up where a crowd has already gathered (like Charles in Australia) or visit popular tourist spots (like William in New York). Then, the propaganda press trumpets how popular they are, claiming that half the city turned out to see them 🤣—even though people aren’t paying them any attention at all, having come there for entirely different reasons.
It’s not even that Charles looks old; he looks lost and frustrated. He didn’t go to the Caribbean for official business—he went solely to make a public appearance, stage a photo op, and prove to everyone just how “popular” he is :)))))))))))))))))
Even so, he is treated more leniently than William—and yet, both of them could only dream of the level of intense scrutiny that H&M have to face. And as it turns out, not even a ruthless smear campaign or a decade of relentless hate has managed to change that.

  17. Lau says:

I don’t really understand how he can look older than his own mother did at the end of her life.

    • Alicky says:

This! I think he looks about the same as usual, but I seem to remember both his parents looking more hale and hearty at this age.

  18. Thinking says:

I can’t really see a difference. But he is 77. I don’t really set the standards that high for 77 year olds.

I’m not sure if it’s because he’s always in a suit, and that makes older people look well-groomed, but he generally looks the same to me.

  19. QuiteContrary says:

I have never been able to get over his sausage fingers. And he wears that signet pinkie ring, which looks like it’s fighting for its life to not burst apart.

  20. Newt says:

I agree that he looks like he has lost weight, but I also believe his cancer never went away. The palace would have announced his cancer was in remission and I don’t believe they have ever made any such announcement.

    • Lurker says:

The Palace made a statement that he still has cancer and will die with cancer. They could reduce the weekly treatment, but the cancer can’t be cured, just controlled.

He always joins in the dancing when asked, and has a few kind words for everyone. He is the least racist person in the family. And he walks better than me, though we share the same birthday and I am 5 years younger.

  21. Lady Digby says:

Instead of starring on Graham Norton chat show, heir and king should have gone together on a joint tour if Cam was unavailable. 2022 Caribbean Tour was disastrous so this was an opportunity for King and Will to impress as the ultimate power couple act on this tour 🤣
Imagine them dancing in their full uncoordinated glory together like Morecambe and Wise on acid, all the right moves but not necessarily in the right order!
Will insisting the natives carry them about in chairs after making unfunny jokes about slavery being a lifestyle choice that so many of their ancestors made!

  22. tamra says:

And to think that he had the perfect couple to do these things for him! Get to work Chuck your lazy heir will be of no help! LOL

  23. Paisley25 says:

He turn 78 in two weeks and looks his age. His suits seem old and stretched out in places. I assume he’s just thrifty like Anne.

  24. Constance says:

    He is near 80.
All these ancient white men running everything
I am pretty old and I am so over it

  25. Lisa says:

He needs to take a page from Joe Biden’s book and relax on the beach and enjoy what life you have left! He has nothing to prove as he has already failed at his most important roll! To be a good father!

  26. jferber says:

Maybe if his heir William stepped up and did his damn job, Charles would look better.

  27. jferber says:

    Lisa, very true.

  28. Tn Democrat says:

By the time my grandparents/great grandparents were in their 60s/70s, manual labor, stress, poverty, sun damage and poor nutrition had wrecked their bodies. All were eat up with arthritis, looked 15 years older than they were, had significant, quality of life draining health problems and should have used a cane/walker all the time because they were unsteady/prone to falls. Charles looks like a privileged elderly man who has had a few sporting injuries/broken bones, never did hard manual labor/worked outside and has current health problems. Our expectations of what people should look like has been totally warped by photoshopping, plastic surgery/injectables and AI. He has never been an exceptionally habdsome man, but he doesn’t look terrible for a near 80 year old that hasn’t heavily indulged in plastic surgery and injectables. Charles was always very fashionable in an upperclass British way. He would look better if he updated his wardrobe and wore suits that fit better. He could be intentionally dressing in baggy clothes to conceal a port/catheter or other medical issues/devices. He is probably just too cheap to update his wardrobe. Willy and Keen, without photoshop, don’t look great for their age and are much younger. The question should be why Willy looks so rough in his 40s and why he isn’t stepping up…
