Angelina Jolie visits Haiti on World Refugee Day

jolie13

Back in February, Angelina traveled to Haiti as part of her work with the UNHCR. She met with earthquake survivors and UN staffers on the ground. This weekend Angelina made her second visit post-earthquake, this time for the press surrounding World Refugee Day, today. There are no photos of her visit that I can find – the above photo is from her February trip. She also spent Thursday and Friday in Ecuador, meeting with refugees who have been displaced for more than eight years, and participating in some kind of forum with the high commissioner of the UNHCR and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Actress Angelina Jolie has quietly returned to Haiti for meetings with Haitian and U.N. officials.

The weekend visit by the “goodwill ambassador” for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was not announced to keep it low-profile.

U.N. officials confirmed the visit when asked by The Associated Press. They agreed to discuss the trip only if not quoted by name because they were asked not to share details of Jolie’s visit.

Jolie has visited Haiti several times. In February she met with orphans and other earthquake victims.

The actress has also visited Iraq, Thailand, Pakistan and other countries on behalf of the U.N. refugee agency.

[From The Associated Press]

That’s strange. “U.N. officials confirmed the visit when asked by The Associated Press. They agreed to discuss the trip only if not quoted by name because they were asked not to share details of Jolie’s visit.” What the hell? All of a sudden it’s like Angelina is CIA and no one can confirm exactly why she’s in-country. Like, when asked why Angelina was traveling to a country with lots of refugees, instead of going on the record, a UN official muttered something about “assassination” before he got a poison dart to the ass.

Here are some photos of Angelina on 2009’s World Refugee Day:

the UN usually confirmed her visit, after she leaves the country,f or security reasons i always assumed

  2. Shay says:

What gets me with this UNHCR thing is that many refugees remain in limbo for so many years, due to all the red tape and their lives, in terms of education and health, are put on hold and yet the Angelina’s of this world gain photographic opportunities.
There are so many asylum seekers from hellholes in detention camps waiting for years on end for the UNHCR to process them and many industrialised countries simply elongate the process because they’re not thrilled with absorbing refugees.
Do we ever really know what happens to the refugees when all we hear about are celebrities acting as goodwill ambassadors here and there? Now I’m not talking about Hait, but other places where Angelina visits, that have obvious social divides and cultural divisions that lead to refugee camps and the like.

  3. YT says:

She would be a high-profile target as would any celebrity traveling in troubled, third-world nations. Her PR value is still good with press releases and photos after visits, plus her group can move quickly and have focused visits without the gawkers that advanced PR would bring. The UN officials who are leaking info should learn to shut their traps.

She has managed to handle her UN responsibilities without the circus atmosphere some celebrities require when only going to the grocery store.

  4. Mentok the Mind Taker says:

“…before he got a poison dart to the ass.”

    Thanks for that, Kaiser.

Beauty’s startin’ to fade on our girl, isn’t it? Ange looks tired. Those goat-beard arguments really took their toll.

Time to take that year off, like she’s always threatening to do.

  5. Deb says:

I think it’s interesting that they have a representative that is a high school drop out and admitted heroin addict. Great role model for the refugees.

  6. lisa says:

Some really dumb and uneducated comments.. First of all you may want to research a bit and stop reading the rags. . Angelina did not Drop out of high school. She graduated when she was 16,, Way ahead of the others in her school. In addition she went to school in New York and studied with one of the great Acing teachers; Lee Strasberg..And she never said she was a drug addict. She did say had used drugs.. hmmm something that unfortunately many people have done. I will note she has never been to rehab or her face plastered in a mug shot. But of course your negative comment is only for her. She was in her early teens during her so called Wild years. And those things are known because she shared them. So really I guess Angelina is not allowed to grow up and change..

I await the negative comments regarding Johnny Depp, Robert Downey, Charlie Sheen, Drew Barrymore, Nicole Richie, and others that had drug addiction, arrest, and jail time.. but They got to change and their past which is WELL documented is never thrown up.. But then the need to hate on Angelina outweighs clear thinking..

I love that she does what she does regardless of what people who can’t bother to get their facts straight think or feel. Good for her..

  7. Lia says:

    Well said,Lisa!
I’m not a big fan of The Pitt Family but they do good things for people in devastation. Wasn’t Brad one of the first people to help Katrina Victims rebuild??
Why does their bad publicity out do the good they do? What are you people doing for anyone in need? Yea,they’re able to because they got money and connections but they really don’t have to do squat!
I bet if all these smack talkers were confronted with a hardship and The Pitts offered to help, you’d take their money in a second! And if you say no you’re a liar!

  8. Fluffy Kitten Tail says:

I think most actors and actresses are low class swine. They are no better than the rest of us, they just have more money and PR to keep it on the down low.

And no, I would not take their money or anyone else’s.I have been confronted with hardship in my life. I was able to help myself and did not need to ask for hand outs from people like the Pitt’s. What a ridiculous statement that was to make!

Great they help others. No question there. I am just tired of them getting so much credit when other people get none. There are plenty of celebs who do the same amount for charities, and as I said on another thread, plenty of REGULAR people volunteer and work harder than Jolie, and they get no recognition or praise for their efforts.

  9. e-non says:

ah, what would the day be without the requisite uninformed/hate-filled bashing of jolie/pitt.

  10. She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named says:

fluffy, regular people DO get recognition for their efforts, from their peers, those they help and those in their circles. If you did any work like this, you’d know that. And if that’s the reason for doing this kind of work, then it’s the wrong reason.

  11. Deb says:

I suppose it’s better to give a percentage of their wealth to charity instead of Uncle Sam.

  12. jacky says:

    The worst liar of Hollywood!

    Care about your children!

  13. OC lady says:

WTF jacky? What a misogynistic statement. She leaves the country to do charity, and that means she’s a bad mother? What are we living in the 50s? Mothers have be chained to their kids all day? Wow–the people who dislike her sound like real winners.

  14. CD says:

For some people, their heart is so small that they only have the capacity to care about one thing at a time, but not everyone is the same way. Angelina can care about her kids and care about the refugees at the same time. Her kids also have father who is there to take care of them and support them when their mom has to work.

Anyone trying to drag Angelina’s past into the conversation as if the UN will suddenly rethink their decision to have Angelina as an ambassador are too late. She’s been doing this for ten years with their support. Every time Angelina is in the news for going on a goodwill trip or giving an interview related to refugees, the donations for UNHCR see a spike.

  15. teri says:

Lisa thank you for clearing that up. For some, Angelina isn’t allowed to grow up nor mature. For their purpose only of course they still live in her past only feeding off the negative and ignoring all the wonderful things since then. Angelina Jolie is so inspirational. Haters and fans alike love to talk anything Angelina, she brings awareness regardless. People who only do for themselves are so boring.

  16. teri says:

Fluffy kitten apparently you are wanting praise yourself for doing some goodness. So here it is congrats for dropping five dollars in the bucket. Why else would you point out your greatness instead of focusing on Angelina helping year around for the last ten years. This isn’t some damn hobby of hers. Angelinas doing her part so quit being so negative.

  17. teri says:

Better yet Fluffy start praising the people you see helping their communities or else where and donating money. It all really starts with you.

  18. teri says:

Angelina is always in danger visiting these places. I know some don’t give a royal hoot about her or her caring about others, but most do. Negative Nellys come out of the woodwork like snakes only to give negative comments.

  19. teri says:

Reading over on JJB and several posts indicate that the whole family went, not just Angelina. Not sure in the danger zone though. One family can only do so much to help out. The ones yapping so nasty towards her are the ones who are simply uneducated and bitter.

  20. Anya says:

Deb truly amazing that you would say these outright completely biased LIES about someone who leads a very honest life, who graduated from high school at the early age of 16, who attended University in NYC for a while, who is able to intelligently and easily converse with heads of state and world leaders, who has been in the field for UNHCR for over 10 years paying all her expenses. Angelina has never been arrested for DUI or any drug offense, never been in rehab, never seen staggering out of clubs naked as a jaybird, never been fired from a job. All who know her say without fail that she is a loving mother who makes her family her priority and who works for 3 months a year, being at home the rest of the time with her family. Shame on you for your attempted slander.

  21. JJ says:

Can’t we just agree that, like most of us, she’s matured since the loon she may have been 10 years ago? Lord knows I was a piece of work when I was younger.

As for the PR she gets for going places, that’s the whole point of the UN job. The UN wants her to get publicity for its issues. And those places ARE scary and dangerous, so give her some credit for doing it.

  22. Deb says:

Give me a break…..How naive can you be? You act like she actually rolls up her sleeves and does some kind of work or something. All she does is get her picture taken with refugees, she doesn’t actually prepare meals or change diapers for god’s sake. She’s a whore, nothing more, nothing less. Grow up.

  23. mln says:

maybe she doesn’t want any pictures so that tabs don’t show her crying with the quote BRAD LEAVES FOR REAL THIS TIME like we’ve had this whole year

  24. Lia says:

Fluffy,Have you lost your family your home all in one day?? Well some of these people they help out have and you bet your bottom dollar they didnt care where and who it came from!

  25. GrrrlGrace says:

Fluffy Tail–wow–you really have a chip on your shoulder, don’t you?

When “regular folk” like us volunteer and work for charity, it’s sort of…expected, shall I say, that it goes unnoticed. It’s not about how much you get in return, but how much heart you have to offer, right? Welcome to the thankless world of volunteerism.

As far as Angelina and other celebrities who do the same (or less) than “regular folk” and get far more recognition, I think it’s obvious that, yes, they do it for PR sometimes but more often than not, their name simply brings AWARENESS TO THE ISSUE in a way that our names cannot. Do you begrudge the people of Haiti that, simply because it pisses you off?

Also, if she gets more publicity or attention than other celebrities who do amazing acts of kindness…well, that’s just Hollywood and how the cookie crumbles. Whether or not you like it (or her), she’s one of the highest paid, closely watched celebrities of this time period.

Again, for the record, I’m not a Jolie or even Pitt fan. However I am more than convinced that her humanitarian work and the emotions she displays are genuine–I’m thrilled that she does the work that she does…I’m even more thrilled that they turn into news events because it brings AWARENESS TO THE ISSUE. And I’m not obsessed with proving otherwise.

@ Jacky…so if you think Jolie should go “care for her children”, do you think that all other volunteer mothers should do the same??? Your statement sounds like it’s from a stoned Stepford wife.

  26. P90x Workout says:

I am as upset about the oil crisis as anyone. It is affecting, and will continue to affect my family, possibly for generations. I do think however, that most people know about the crisis, and unfortunately there aren´t a lot of avenues yet for your “man or woman” on the street to help. Of course there are places to donate money and other items, but, really, we´re all waiting for them to cap the well. Meanwhile, there are others out there that need our help every day. Go out and help them.Locally or globally, as you would. Angelina´s motives aside, she raises awareness. Do the same, gracefully.

  27. mags says:

fluffy whatever, did you ever think that the “regular people” who volunteer don’t do it for recognition, just a thought.

  28. vic says:

Hey Deb, did you graduate high school and avoid heroin? Congrats! So why aren’t you helping out in Haiti, since Angelina clearly is not qualified in your expert opinion? Yeah, that’s what I thought. So think twice before you make a foolish, negative comment. And if all you have for the world is negativity, keep it to yourself.

  29. Great role model for the refugees.

  30. Fluffy Kitten Tail says:

Wow, ruffled some feathers, didn’t I.

Did I say regular people expect recognition? You all are way too sensitive about Jolie. I merely pointed out, for the 100th time, Jolie does not do the actual work, yet you all fall over yourselves at the mere sight of her and a few pictures ” Oh she’s such a humanitarian…” What about the real people who do the work? They are the ones who are the heroes, not her.

Not going to argue the point anymore. She is nothing special in the world of humanitarianism. She’s a face, nothing more. The actual workers get my respect.

  31. mln says:

Fluffy she does do actual work she just doesn’t do the same job as those who are hands on every day in the trenches. If she wasn’t the face of UNHCR then they would ask another celeb to do the same thing as they asked Richard Burton ,and Sophia Loren in the past. Her job is to spread information about the refugees and she is doing a great job.

  32. meme says:

@Fluffy Kitten Tail – I agree with you. Such bullies around here.

  33. crab says:

Fluffy Tail is my new hero!!

  34. Anya says:

Chris Klein picked up for a suspected DUI a couple of days ago just entered rehab. See people in the public eye with a drug problem, and alcohol is a drug, manifest those issues in public ways, like entering a home not their own and being arrested for trespassing or drunk driving or some overt public action.

And part of today’s humanitarian work is to get pubic recognition that there is a severe problem so that donations and paid and unpaid aid workers can respond and provide aid. Fluffy without that public awareness which is what Angelina and many others provide many human crisis situations flounder. Too bad you can’t see the forest for the single tree you appear to have such a problem with.

  35. meme says:

for the love of jeebus lighten up anya. not all of us drank the koolaid.

  36. Claudia says:

Well, I love this beautiful Lady.

  37. The Bobster says:

Was Balloon Lips looking for some more fashion accessories?

  38. The Bobster says:

    Dup

  39. Josephina says:

Fluffy— a hero? For what reason? She is a rebel without a cause.

There is nothing noble or remarkable about Fluffy’s absurd slander about Angie, a person who cares enough to help others. Fluffy is too selfish (because you would have to be in order to criticize help that you are not giving yourself)to see the good in what she is doing.

So… you become catty because she is getting too much recognition for her numerous contributions and frequent trips to Third World countries that actually do raise awareness?

It bothers you THAT much to see kindness and thoughtfulness in action towards another person not related to you?

Should this level of compassion only be reserved for people you know?

Are you incapable of treating a stranger with this type of love?

My dear, she is NOT the one with problem…And there is nothing wrong with my drink.

Angie has a lot of love in her life (Brad, kids, the fans), and therefore, her will power to give back continuously to society, here in the U.S. and abroad, seems endless.

Indeed, it may seem absurd to some to give at all if you live a life where you do not feel thankful for waht for what you have and are not very concerned about people that you do not know. Angie’s heart is in the right place and she is greatly admired for that.

She has a strong desire to help people, and it is genuine.

  40. Deb says:

    What are you smoking?

  41. Josephina says:

    Why are you so incoherent?
