Jennifer Aniston’s hair stylist talks about the Julie Christie-inspired cut

Jennifer Aniston’s haircut is one of the biggest stories of the week. And I’m fine with that. I’d rather be talking about her hair than her friendship with Chelsea Handler, you know? Anyway, Aniston’s famous, long-time hair dresser Chris McMillan gave an exclusive interview to Allure about Aniston’s new hair. It’s a funny thing to think about – Chris is so much more than Aniston’s hair stylist. He’s so much more than her friend too – he’s part of her entourage, and he gets paid to travel with her internationally and do her hair. Think about this – Aniston didn’t cut her hair before the American premiere of Just Go With It. She didn’t cut her hair before the European promotion started. She cut her hair mid-way through promotion – in between Germany and Spain. Was it planned? Did she want it to be the story of the week? Was she drunk? Chris tells all!

Allure: Tell me about the cut. What inspired it?
McMillan: “I call it a hairline bob that follows the jawline down. It’s shortened in back and longer in front. It’s angled and inspired by Vidal Sassoon haircuts and Julie Christie from Shampoo.”

Why now?
McMillan: “It was just time for a change. We had a blast doing it. And we’ve always liked this haircut. It’s about keeping things simple. The way Celine and Calvin Klein and Jil Sander and all these clothing lines are keeping it really simple and chic. I really feel that fashion right now. All the styles are back to when I first started doing hair. And I love it.”

If you want the cut, what should you ask for at the salon?
McMillan: “In the back it angles up—it was cut at the nape. I love it when it’s slightly angled. The angle adds a modern edge to it. To keep it modern, it’s not too blunt but also not too layered. It kind of has a choppier edge. The ends are cut into, but mainly they’re all one length.”

Does Jennifer have naturally wavy hair? Do you have to blow out the hair with this cut?
McMillan: “We did blow it out for press, but we’re excited to go kind of natural, like Kim Basinger in 9 1/2 Weeks.”

Once you cut her hair, did you need to change the color?
McMillan: “It’s so funny. This is something that happens all the time: Whenever I cut someone’s hair, they say, ‘My color looks so much better.’ The color kind of freshens up when you get a drastic haircut.”

Looks like Jennifer’s got volume at the roots. How do you get that?
McMillan: “A haircut at this length can tend to be a little round. You want to keep it a little more square. So I took the flatiron to straighten out the underneath pieces to take some of the roundness out, and I left the top fluffy and full. I used a bit of mousse at the roots to give it height at the crown.”

So it’s all about the bob again, huh?
McMillan: “I’m loving bobs again. I love the girl in the YSL ads. It’s a sexy look. The reason that I’m loving a bob at the moment… There are so many long, layered hairstyles and—don’t get me wrong, I love that. But The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills all have that. You know what I mean? And what’s the opposite direction you can go in?”

Can I write that, what you said about the Real Housewives?
McMillan: “[Laughs] Yes. They all have that natural, piecey hair. It’s nice to take the extensions out of the hair and do something more natural. It’s gotten out of hand. But I can’t stop watching it.”

[From Allure]

So, Aniston is aiming for Julie Christie-Kim Basinger angular-yet-loose, sexy, not piece-y or “Real Housewife”. Did she succeed? Eh. I get the Julie Christie reference, much as it pains me to compare Aniston to Christie. Aniston’s new hair is very, very similar to a style Julie wore for several years. But I don’t get the Kim Basinger reference at all. And Aniston does sometimes give off a Real Housewives vibe, you know? Sometimes she does that unbrushed, hair-in-the-face, big-blowout look that is very, very popular with the Real Housewives.

This is now just beyond silly.. is this all people talk about regarding Aniston.. Hair and body..

she once said I think regarding her hair..

“If people are talking about my haircut/style..then I’m doing something wrong”.. I think that comment was many years ago..

and people are still talking about her hair.. I say yes YOU are doing something wrong. What about you acting and outside interest.

    WOW

  2. Louise says:

I love how the stylist is trying to make the hairstyle unique and a trend. A lot of women, including celebrities, have this style. Also a lot of blogs have photos from Friends that show Jennifer had a very similar cut on the show.

  3. brin says:

Remember when she was pissed after the Rachel cut was so popular and she said it was taking away from her acting?
She must want that attention now because that’s all we are talking about. But I do love this cut on her.

  4. Meow Mix says:

I like the cut. Think it’s quite flattering. But why is this news?!

  5. Molly says:

I’ve just gotten my hair to grow down to the middle of my back, so I can’t get on board with this look. But if she needed change and it makes her feel happy and confident, then that’s all that matters 🙂

  6. pebbles says:

Kaiser, It pains me to hear you compare Jennifer Aniston to Julie Christie too. Julie Christie is a classic beauty who is not afraid of aging. We all know Aniston is filler city.
Aniston reminds me more of Gloria Steinem in this “do.”

  7. Melanie says:

I am seriously thinking about getting the new Rachel. LOLOL! I am so sick of static in my hair.
Edited to say: Watch her come out and bash the people who get this hair cut. Bish!

  8. Diane says:

This whole thing is getting ridiculous.
It’s hair for crying out loud and the style has been around forever.

  9. Marjalane says:

I love this cut- it looks great on her, but dayum! There are far more important issue’s than her hair! Is that a baby bumb or what?!

  10. khaveman says:

The cut is great but the glasses are clunky. Smaller, sexier frame would be better. It’s making her look like a talk show host.

  11. 2outOf5 says:

It’s the same style she’s had for years…just shorter. Seriously, it’s not drastic. Geeze.

  12. Roma says:

I love the cut. I took out my extensions a year ago and I’m seriously considering chopping it off.

But seriously; she doesn’t cut her hair, people complain that she always stays the same. She cuts her hair, people say that she just wants attention.

People hate hard on this girl.

  13. anonymous says:

Friends was how many years ago? The talk was about her hair then, 2011 still about Jennifer Aniston’s hair, talk about stagnant and no growth, After hair have grown out it’s really dead. So are we talking about hair or Jennifer Aniston’s career.
Compare that to Angelina Jolie:She has 6 kids, give birth to 3, humanitarian work, supports schools and clinics in third world countries, UN ambassador, life partner Brad Pitt. Bare in mind Aniston is damn near 10 yrs older than Jolie, talk about a cildish mind. Jennifer Aniston needs to get a life and grow-up, if JA finds that she has a difficult time doing that she has enough money to see a psychiatrist.

  14. mln76 says:

As for the hair I get the Julie Christie reference but maybe the stylist was talking about Basinger’s color? Anyway I like the cut when it’s blown out but she should have just kept her mouth shut about it. It’s not that big of a deal.

@ Roma She just did an interview in Allure where she complained about people talking about her haircut, now she’s having her hairdresser give a statement to the media. Why is it ‘hating’ on her to point out her own GD words?

  15. Crash2GO2 says:

For this much buzz on her new hair? You know she’s doing something right. The woman is huge news still, love her or hate her.

  16. Chrissy says:

Ha! I’ve had this hair cut for the past year! He’s copying MY hair guy. Or this is just a really common hairstyle. Yeah … probably that. :o) It looks great on her.

  17. susanne says:

    marjalane,

I see a bump in the black dress. That was my first thought- the haircut is meant to distract us from the bump.

We called it first! ok, you did.

  18. Beth says:

Does anyone know what brand her glasses are?

  19. Bite me says:

    I need a drink

  20. Maud says:

I got a similar cut today, but mine is too round. Seems to me that JA can wear her hair in many styles. I think this is a very smart look on her.

  21. Trace says:

This is getting plain ridiculous. I had this haircut two years ago. Nothing new, innovative, or unique about it. It’s a angled bob. These people are so up their own asses!

  22. Roma says:

@mln76: I just assume the hair dresser is in the Ken Paves group of hairdressing… I’m sure media contacts him directly when they switch shit up.

And I stand by what I said: people will complain about her no matter what. Why do you think CB writes so many articles about her?

  23. whitedaisy says:

    @CB @Kaiser–

I formally request a Jennifer Aniston-free week beginning tomorrow.
It’s all too much about nothing.

    Thank you :0)

    whitedaisy

  24. Ari says:

I am not a fan of her but I will continue to say that this is her best look – she should always keep it this style. It completely suits her.

  25. Cherry Rose says:

I just find it funny that on Jennifer Aniston posts, someone always has to bring up Angelina Jolie, and vice versa.

    Give it a rest people!

  26. Sherri says:

I never get a RHoBH vibe from JA – not that there is anything wrong with that . . .

  27. I Choose Me says:

I gotta say she looks adorable in that first pic with the glasses. She has a great smile and looks really animated. I still think it’s too blonde but kudos to her for changing it up a little.

  28. Sumodo1 says:

    It’s a tad homely.

  29. Oi says:

good hair. now can we please talk about the makeup? Its a little boring as well.

  30. LOVE ANGELINA says:

I think she looks like Barbara Streisand in the first pic and Diane Keaton in the ones with the glasses. Its not bad a cut, it makes her look fresh and new because she has been wearing the SAME HAIR FOR YEARS. I like it.

  31. Darlene says:

I love it. I think it’s a great change for her and will be easy to grow back out. LOVE IT!

  32. Diane says:

This is the first and last time JA will be mentioned in the same breath as Julie Christie, one of the great Brit actresses. I get the hair reference, but JA’s gonna need a whole lot more than a new haircut…maybe some acting lessons? It’s never too late, Jen.

  33. Kimmy says:

Dakota Fanning had this hair style when she was like 9 it’s nothing new or ground breaking, it seems like Jen people are hard at work getting her media attention I mean really all this talk about a hair cut that she had 7 years ago.

  34. im awful says:

i think it looks great on her. for some reason it makes her look more fresh and its age appropriate…

ive been trying to grow out my hair for forever so not for me but maybe when i have kids!

  35. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

    I like it.

  36. Runs with Scissors says:

Julie Christie? Just seems like she’s trying hard to continue the Barbara Streisand comparisons, remember her ‘homage’ to Babs? *chuckle*

  37. guesty says:

she does have good hair. this is her signature look whatever the length. but imma not a fan of shorter dos.

can’t wait to watch her ‘grow’ it out.

  38. tuscan sun says:

My 60 year old mother got this haircut two years ago. Jen isn’t doing anything new or original.

  39. rosalee says:

Wow all these bitchy comments over a haircut..I wonder what you have to say about the human rights record of Iran?

  40. N.D. says:

And this boring unoriginal haircut managed to become the hottest news reported and discussed everywhere. Wow! She must be A-lister after all.

P.S. Anne Hathaway and Scarlett Johansson have the same haircut at the moment

  41. Lady D says:

@rosalee, If you want to know what we think about the war in Iran, you should head to those blogs. This is a celebrity gossip website. We are here to forget for a few moments the tragedy of war and crime. So go be holier than thou elsewhere.

  42. mln76 says:

@Roma,Ken Paves wouldn’t be giving an interview without the OK from Aniston’s team. The haircut was timed to help promote the foreign release of JGWI. Not a big deal or a sin just plain old PR.

As for the Julie Christie thing… no she doesn’t have the beauty, grace, or talent of the woman but their hair color and texture are very similiar.

  43. hoganbcmj says:

Geez, all she did was take a couple inches off the bottom. It’s still the same GD haircut she’s always had. Why are people talking about this?

  44. hstl1 says:

Chris is sort of a d-bag. Michael Canale changed her haircolor a couple of months ago to this shade. You would think since they are business partners in a salon, he would give credit where credit is due.

Personally, I like her much better with her longer, darker hair. I don’t know why people pick on her for her signature look when Gwen Stefani hasn’t changed her style in over 10 years.

And FYI, McMillan writes a monthly column for Allure, hence the press.

  45. Cheyenne says:

    She’s got great hair!
    She’s got a great body!
    She’s got great hair!
    She’s got a great body!
    She’s got great hair!
    She’s got a great body!
    (Did I leave anything out?)

  46. skilo says:

OMG! Seriously people, a lot of you must just hate the hell out of her. I can’t believe how hard you are trying to make this something negative about her. It is a haircut for crying out loud. And she is not the first or last person the press has done this to. Remember when Faith Hill cut her hair? There have been lots of times the media has made a big deal out of any change to someones looks if they are famous. The whole reason it get so much attention with JA is because lots of people love her and lots hate her so she gets talked about.

  47. tooey says:

I love Chris McMillan and this is a very cute haircut. However, they are both late to the party on this one. It is essentially the same A-line bob that every soccer mom has been wearing for the past five years, for pete’s sake! Certainly nothing new or groundbreaking here. Although even this miniscule change must have been stressful for Anniston.

  48. operatta says:

Her PR is really doing the heavy pushing for a Sandler flick with Aniston in it. I’ve never heard so much press (and fillers from Huv)about hair.

And BTW, it sounds like (from Chris M’s interview) he just took out the extensions and did some trimming. It’s still the same hairstyle from the front albeit shorter….because it still covers her face. LOL!

Well, she’s really cemented her relevance in this industry – she only about her hair and her body and that sitcom from some years ago.

Forget about acting Aniston. You’re not an actress you’re a celebrity.

  49. Dhavy says:

Is it me or there’s a new nose with the new cut?

I can care less about her hair and why is a big deal

Her shaving it all off a la Britney, now that would be news!

  50. SuperSleuth says:

    “She’s got great hair!
    She’s got a great body!
    She’s got great hair!
    She’s got a great body!
    She’s got great hair!
    She’s got a great body!
    (Did I leave anything out?)”

How about this: “Jen is one of the warmest people I met, we all crowd around her. She’s like that fire we all crowd around for warmth. There’s not an ill-intentioned bone in that woman’s body. She’s really extraordinary that way. She brings people together.” Brad Pitt

  51. Runs with Scissors says:

@SuperSleuth, yeah, until he figured out she’s a disingenuous twit and dumped her.

  52. Toot says:

Aniston could definitely be one of the cast from Real Housewives of The OC. Fake Blonde, work out alot, and likes the booze. She’d fit in perfectly.

  53. LuckyLilGem says:

On a good day, that bob looks like Chelsea Handler’s cut or Rene Zellweger. On a bad day, that bob looks like Barbara Streisand!

Thumbs down Jen, reach for the hair extensions.

  54. Boromir's bytch says:

That cut and color is 100 times better than my stylist can do on her best day. Total hair envy. And I love the glasses too.

  55. rebecca says:

She has had this same exact haircut before….in one of the last seasons of friends. She had it and then quickly grew it out. I like this cut on her but a stacked bob Is not very exactly a news story.

  56. CB Rawks says:

Ally McBeal hair. Crap on her also.

  57. _Salem_ says:

I can’t believe her HAIR DRESSER did an interview about her HAIR! Its utterly vacuous and childish. Is it any wonder many don’t take her seriously when this is what she considers ‘substance’?

  58. _Salem_ says:

Roma “But seriously; she doesn’t cut her hair, people complain that she always stays the same. She cuts her hair, people say that she just wants attention.” Whether she cuts her hair or not, is not the issue. The fact is that she is papping herself so much on this. Even allowing (and she’d she’d have to give permission as it is about her) her hairdresser to give an interview. Its the way she pimping herself out for attention over this that is the issue.

  59. _Salem_ says:

anonymous: “if JA finds that she has a difficult time doing that she has enough money to see a psychiatrist.” By her own admission, she has seen a psychiatrist for 20 years and counting. Obviously it hasn’t helped her…

  60. _Salem_ says:

Roma, The hairdresser would have had to have Jen’s permission first, so it comes back to her.

“And I stand by what I said: people will complain about her no matter what. Why do you think CB writes so many articles about her?”

The same can be said about other celebs, such as Angelina Jolie who is slammed no matter what she does by people. Aniston actually gets off the easiest as most bloggers and ‘journalists’ fawn all over her. Why should Jennifer Aniston be any different? What are you complaining about? Do you think Aniston should get a free pass?

  61. _Salem_ says:

    “She’s got great hair!
    She’s got a great body!
    She’s got great hair!
    She’s got a great body!
    She’s got great hair!
    She’s got a great body!
    (Did I leave anything out?)”

    Lol, Cheyenne, too true. That is exactly what the loonifers are like. They have set of stock phrases, numbering no more than 10. There’s also;
    Love her!
    You go girl!
    She is so beautiful!
    Her hair is great!
    I love her sooooooooooo much!
    You are the best!
    I love your hair!
    Jen is the bestest!

Its like listening to tweens talk about barbies.

  62. Angel says:

She looks honest to god a million times better. I have hated her old hairstyle for so long and this freshens her up so much. I adore it.

  63. truthzbetta says:

She was gorgeous. Fun, stupid but hip with her sexy hair.

Now she looks like an old frau. Snoring.

  64. ThePhoenix says:

Normal stable people don’t need to see a psychiatrist for TWENTY years, maintaining or not. If you can’t maintain for 20 years, without a psychiatrist holding your hand for 20 years, you have serious deep-seated psychological issues. And need far more help and intervention than even a psychiatrist can give. Fans of Angelina talk about her films, humanitarian work and current events, not her looks. Loonifers and the peanut gallery of nuts have nothing to talk about, but trivial things like her purty hair and body and manicures. Two different classes of fangroups.

  65. Newbie says:

HOLY SHIT. Some of you are craaaaazy. Lots of people see psychologists/chiatrists (how did that get brought up, btw?). It’s completely normal. I wish I had one on staff. Just the effect of having someone listen to you without judgement is amazingly helpful. And I’m very sorry to inform you of this, “ThePhoenix”, but your blessed Jolie has admitted to at least one suicide attempt and to checking herself into a mental ward (see her Rolling Stone interview, circa 2000). Not that I blame her for either. Normal people have breakdowns and moments of despair. Especially women, whose hormones are really unfortunate throughout most of our lives.

  66. Anon says:

Sometimes I wish Jolie wasn’t so honest about herself and would just lie and manipulate or better yet, hire a publicist to do it. Hmm, think Chelsea and Jennifer might know one? Oh, that’s right…good ole Huvane Brothers ala agent and publicist they share. Wonder how much money Jennifer has paid out to them over the years to spin into positives or scrub clean? ka-ching.
