Heidi Klum: “I’ve been cheated on, I’ve been heartbroken, I’ve broken hearts”

heidi1

First of all, I absolutely HATE what they did to Heidi Klum’s face on the cover of the May issue of Good Housekeeping. They gave her AlienFace! It’s a combination of bad makeup, bad lighting, and bad Photoshop. And the puppy’s face is all “OH NOES! They put me with AlienFace!!” Anyway, yes, Heidi is the cover girl and the interview is half decent. You can read the full thing here – Heidi talks extensively about her family and her career juggling. Whenever I read anything about Heidi, I just get exhausted – she does everything. Maternity lines, show lines, perfumes, she has four kids, she has a husband, she does Project Runway, she hosts another show on Lifetime, and on and on. Meanwhile, I sometimes forget to feed for my dog, and he’s literally my only responsibility. Here are some highlights from the interview:

On her AOL blog site, Planet Heidi: She covers parenting as well as cooking, nutrition, fashion, and interior design. A regular reader of other mom blogs, Klum hopes that her site will become an educational forum for mothers. “Apart from sharing my tips on toys or snacks, I’m open to hearing new ideas from other moms,” she explains. “I want to learn, too.”

She is most proud of: …The job she has done of raising considerate kids, ones who say “please” and “thank you” without prodding. “I’m very happy when I see them just doing it by themselves, because it takes a few years,” she says. “For the longest time, you just sound like a broken record, but you have to be consistent when teaching kids.”

Consistency: “Keeping it all together as a modern woman means multitasking, especially when you work,” she says. “I think you always need to try your best, but at the same time you can only do what you can do, and you don’t need to beat yourself up about it. I’m not white-picket-fence perfect.”

She misses out on everyday milestones in her kids’ lives. “There are moments that I wish I was there for,” she says. “For example, when Lou almost fell over and little 4-year-old Johan caught her.”

But: “Family comes first,” Klum insists. “You’re the only thing they have.” (Perhaps this is why one of her favorite charities is an orphanage in Germany; she wrote a book about the tooth fairy, the proceeds of which benefit the parentless kids there.)

On her childhood: Klum did have an awkward phase. “I had a lot of pimples,” she insists, grimacing at the thought because she still gets the occasional zit. “I was a good kid,” Klum recalls. “My parents laid rules out for me, and I followed them.” Her mother gave her one rule she has never forgotten: “Don’t rely on anybody,” Klum says. “I saw that you have to work to get what you want.”

No regrets about the past: “I’ve been married before. I’ve had boyfriends. I’ve been cheated on. I’ve been heartbroken. I’ve broken hearts,” she says. “That’s part of life, and it’s part of figuring out who you are so you can find the right partner.”

On marriage and renewing her vows with Seal every year: “It’s very romantic,” she says with a dreamy look in her eyes. “It’s a sacred, special moment for us where we tell each other how we feel about each other. I get asked so many times,” she continues, “that I ask myself, Why does [our marriage] work so well? Maybe it’s just because it’s real. We love each other. We love our kids. We have fun with each other and in all the stages in our lives we go through together. What I wanted in a partnership is that I could still be who I am. There are many days where I don’t want to put on makeup. I want to be loved just as me.”

On Seal: “He’s the most charming, loving, fun, gentlemanly, inspirational man I could have wished for,” Klum gushes. “He always makes me feel I’m the only woman in the world. “He always puts family first, too. It’s about being Dad every day.” She is equally thoughtful, planning getaways when they are visiting her parents in Germany and the kids are taken care of. “We may be parents, but we can still make time to be a couple,” she says. “We’ll go shopping together. The kids think that’s the most boring thing on the planet.”

On having a large family so quickly: “Every time I left the hospital with a big smile on my face and a baby in my arms, I said to the nurse, ‘I’ll be back next year!’ ” she giggles.

On spirituality: “As my husband would say, ‘How can you make a child and then think there is no God?’ ” Klum continues, awed by the blessing and responsibility of being a mom. “Giving birth is a huge spiritual thing. And what I put in the world — meaning our kids — I try to make as good as I can.”

On pregnancy weight: “When you are a fit and healthy person to begin with, you most likely go back to what you were before,” she says.

Beauty advice: Her best advice for keeping a youthful appearance and the energy to get through the day is also the simplest: Get plenty of sleep. “If I don’t have plans with my husband, I go to bed right after the kids at 8:30.”

[From Good Housekeeping]

Heidi cracks me up. Can you imagine leaving the hospital, having just given birth, and yelling out “I’ll be back next year!”? The nurses were probably like, “Crazy German woman.” But I’ll admit it – I get a sugar rush from hearing Heidi gush about Seal. I buy their sweetness. I think they adore each other, and I think their marriage is solid. At least I hope it is. Fingers crossed!

Oh, and I kind of think she’s pregnant again. It just feels like she’s due to be knocked up again.

hahaha! this woman gets her rocks off getting knocked up!
im so jearous of her – four kids who know how to say please’ and ‘thank you’, without being prompted.
    four beautiful kids!!
that seal is so damned lucky…
wait, heidi is the lucky one…
    no, wait…

  2. Maddie says:

She was so funny on that show I Get That A Lot (I think that’s what it called) she was behind the counter in a pizza joint and tossing out jokes and talking to the customers.

  3. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

Wow four babies! I thought she said she was done… Maybe not

Good for her for having a wonderful family.

  4. carrie says:

nice interview ! she looks down-to-earth

  5. Chris says:

I didn’t want to be the first one to say it but seriously Seal is no oil painting.

  6. Jackson says:

As annoying as I find her on Project Runway (although last season she seemed not too bad) her interviews always make up for it. She seems very down to earth. Very nice and normal.

  7. becky says:

I have no idea how women can have 4 kids and work. i get tired just visiting my friends baby. she tks 1 hour to finish a bottle. i get home exhausted. i’d be the worst mom! but im great parent to my rescue kittens.

  8. EdithP says:

I think she looks like she always does. I don’t think she’s the prettiest model — her nose is a bit sharp and I think her stomach is weird (although great after all those children) — but she is funny and seems to be nice. There are stories about how nice she and Seal are to their staff. And she certainly seems to love her babies!

Jackson, she is pretty annoying on PR. I stopped watching a couple of seasons ago because she and The Orange One were such bitches.

  9. whitedaisy says:

Maybe no oil painting, but there is nothing, NOTHING sexier than a man who loves his children and shows it every day.
What is more attractive than that?

  10. Micki says:

I’ve been cheated on,I’ve been heartbroken and I’ve broken hearts too but I also put on weight..and am nowhere near 4 kids….Ah life’s a bitch!

  11. Justaposter says:

In this day and age of ‘lets tell all!” it is really nice to read about a loving family.

    And Whitedaisy I agree =)

  12. crab says:

Those shoes are killer!! I want them!!

  13. Macheath says:

Seal has Lupus; it’s the reason for his scars.

Anyway, I have such an irrational love for Seal, Heidi and their little brood. Love her.

  14. TG says:

@whitedaisy – I totally agree. A man who is a good father is the best. And Seal is sexy, I think. Does anybody know if he adopted Leni? I know I read about that somewhere but wasn’t sure if it was ever official.

  15. Jayna says:

I love Heidi. Why? Because she’s a very driven, beautiful woman, who never takes herself too seriously. She can make fun of her mistakes. Nice quality. I listened to Seal in a radio interview (I’m his biggest fan. Have all of his music. Terrific songwriter.) And he said men are better husbands and fathers getting married at 40. You’re not as selfish and consummed with your career and playing. And he said you can have more than one soulmate, but it’s the time of your life when you meet them that’s important. That he was at a stage in his life when he recognized all that Heidi meant to him and wanted to take it to the next level and commit and love her unborn child (she was pregnant when he met her) from a different relationship. He said he would have regretted losing her. He’s a very interesting man. And those two still have tons of passion. You can see it.

BTW, I love the photo. It actually isn’t overly photoshopped. They show her smile lines (gasp) and a few crinkles around the eyes. She looks beautiful, but like a woman in her mid to late thirties.

  16. Jayna says:

@TG, he adopted Leni a couple of years ago. And he said he respected the birth father (a very rich older playboy in Europe) allowing that to happen because it was best for Leni. Seal is a true gentleman and always seems to be such a class act.

  17. SistaSoFine says:

I like Heidi but she needs to stop about the baby weight. A few years ago on ET there was a clip of her working out with personal trainer like twice a day after giving birth. Being fit before hand definitely helps, but a trainer gets you over the hump!

  18. TQB says:

I’m sorry, if you don’t understand why Seal is unbelievably hot I don’t even know how to explain it. Yes, his love for his family is super hot but even before then – he just exudes The Sex. He’s so open and thoughtful and that VOICE. Oh please. I really.

I worship these two. I even bought a pair of Heidi’s maternity pants. They’re kinda cute.

  19. Rita says:

It should be illegal to photoshop puppies.

  20. RHONYC says:

i think facially she & seal are starting to even look alike.
their bones structure and smiles are very similar to me. 😉

  21. Jayna says:

TQB, I’ve seen him in concert. And the man is sexy. His has an amazing body, but the rhythm he has and he is very flirtatious when singing to women and moving his hips, lol. And he has a great sense of style and elegance about him. Before Heidi he dated a stunning (also German) true super model for years. He’s always had beautiful women. But his songs are amazing and from the heart. I love it when he has written songs about breaking someone’s heart or his depression over a love affair ending. Heidi brought a lot of light to his life.

  22. DGO says:

    Her children are really beautiful.

  23. sassenach says:

Just once I would like to see a photo of her out with her kids without at least two nannies. Many times they are photoshopped out of pictures but they are always there.

  24. Jayna says:

sassenach, so? They are all extremely young, not even school-age. They are hounded by the paparazzi. That’s why you have a photo. There’s a throng of photogs following them. She’s a good mom and I’m sure at times it’s just her and Seal and probably a bodyguard. But I admire the fact that she goes out to the park and lives her life even while being hounded by these goons. I once saw a photo of someone being photographed by the paps, and it wasn’t just a couple. It was a pack right in front of their faces as they’re trying to walk. It was kind of frightening, and they weren’t even as famous as Seal and Heidi. There should be laws.

  25. thesaurophile says:

I just can’t help loving Heidi.

  26. Jayna says:

Heidi was a stunner when she was younger. Still a really pretty woman in her late thirties. But having babies took away her voluptuousness she was famous for. Not quite as chesty as before. But I’ve always loved her vivacious personality.

  27. OriginalGracie says:

@Chris: What do his looks have to do with anything?

When you find a person you want to spend your life with, you are feeling their heart, their soul, the essence of their being. You are FEELING them.

Besides, looks are overrated. You could have the most handsome man in the world and he could be the biggest dick on the planet.

  28. TQB says:

    @Jayna, definitely jealous!

Heidi is brilliant. She sized up her industry and realized that she wouldn’t be The Body forever, and wisely transitioned herself into being known for her personality instead.

  29. Victoire says:

I really love her. Cover is beautiful ! I like the interview =)

  30. Newbie says:

I used to dislike her. But she grows on me all the time. Especially around Halloween. Dayum! As for Seal, he’s amazing-looking with the scars. Ever since I was a child I admired him for not getting some weird plastic surgery to correct them. It’s awesome.
Umm…can someone explain to me how the sickness of Lupus can make someone have scars on their face a la facial lacerations? I admit I don’t know a ton about the disease, and I’m perfectly ready to be put in my place, but…?

  31. Newbie says:

They seem genuinely happy to me. I usually don’t have rose-colored glasses on when it comes to people in hollywood, but alas. I have to admit I buy the sweetness on this one too.

  32. Rosanna says:

I love her! She’s so REAL.

  33. Jayna says:

@Newbie, it’s a specific kind of Lupus, and that kind strikes children. I think if they get you a certain kind of medicine quick enough you can stop the scarring. And something about the sun, too. It’s been a while since I read up on it. I don’t think he has any other symptoms like regular Lupus causes.

  34. Chris says:

“What do his looks have to do with anything?”

    Ah so you agree. 🙂

  35. Isa says:

Is it really that difficult to raise children that say please and thank you? I ask because my 2 year old says both consistantly, but she’s always been a super easy child. I have no other experience to go from, but I don’t even remember emphasizing it. I always say it and she just picked it up, especially after she realized “please” actually works whereas throwing a fit doesn’t.

I can’t help but notice the difference between her family and Brangelina’s clan. This woman stays very busy and she even admits she misses milestones but no one seems to hate on her for it. I’m not saying that Heidi should be hated on, I am very impressed with her career and her family is beautiful. I think she is probably a great mom.

  36. jc126 says:

I really like Heidi and Seal as a couple, their devotion seems genuine, and he’s particularly awesome for taking up with a pregnant woman who’d just been dumped by her boyfriend, I remember those pics.
The only thing that makes me a little nervous, so to speak, about their relationship is the yearly vow renewal thing, it seems so over-the-top, you know?

  37. really says:

    love her! Viva la Deutschland!
