Will Emily Deschanel’s pregnancy shut down production of ‘Bones’?

If you’re not a fan of Bones, you should probably just skip this post. I love Bones, and I’m trying to get CB to start watching it. It’s such a good show! I mean, it’s not like high art or anything, but I described it to CB as “a romantic comedy with gross-out forensics”. I love the chemistry between Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz, and I’m looking forward to this season’s final two episodes, which might include SOMETHING in the boning area. Get it? “Boning.” Ha! Anyway, these are new photos of the stars of Bones at a Paley Center event, including Emily and her growing pregnancy bump in a too-loud orange dress. Even though the dress is fug, I still find her so beautiful, and she David just look RIGHT together. Bones also just recently (in the past week) got picked up for its seventh season. It’s a hit show with a major following and great numbers, so I hope everybody gets to make the show for as long as they want to make it. Meanwhile, Emily recently discussed how her pregnancy is affecting production:

Bones actress Emily Deschanel has said that the show’s producers are struggling to work around her pregnancy.

Deschanel, who plays main character Dr Temperance ‘Bones’ Brennan on the series, announced in March that she was expecting her first child with husband David Hornsby.

The actress admitted that it is still uncertain how much her pregnancy will affect the series when it returns for a seventh season this fall.

“I image you’re going to see Brennan behind a microscope a lot next season,” Deschanel joked to Entertainment Weekly. “I think there’s gonna be a lot of close-ups of Brennan.”

“I said I’d work through my hiatus, but we didn’t have a pick up until now, and they have to write before we shoot,” she explained. “It’s a whole situation.”

Deschanel added that they are unlikely to solve the issue by including it as part of her character’s storyline.

“I am not gonna say no, never say never, I guess, but I think it’s unlikely,” Deschanel revealed. “I feel like that would change things so much.”

Bones is scheduled to conclude its currently-airing sixth season on May 19.

Emily is not only the star, she’s also a producer on the show, so that’s why she’s really trying to make the schedule work for everyone – she really, really cares about making sure the show stays in production. Other Bones producers have a different idea though – and it involves that odd “backdoor spinoff” episode that featured Geoff Stults, Michael Clarke Duncan and Saffron Burrows:

Fox’s Bones spinoff The Finder is still very much in contention for a series order at Fox. But with shelf space at the network so tight, I hear the network and the series’ producers are exploring a way to give the project presence on Fox next season. The pregnancy of Bones star Emily Deschanel is expected to sideline her for as many as 6-7 episodes from Bones’ upcoming seventh season. Fox, producing studio 20th TV and Bones creator Hart Hanson are discussing the use of Finder-flavored episodes as a filler during Deschanel’s maternity leave. Those will be Bones episodes with The Finder star Geoff Stults and his sidekick Michael Clarke Duncan appearing in them, giving Hanson an opportunity to further develop them. The future of the third Finder lead, played by Saffron Burrows, which has drawn polarizing reaction, is unclear, but I hear that the producers felt it was hard to service more than 2 new characters on Bones. Sources stress that this is one of several scenarios in contention for Deschanel’s hiatus.

The Finder was introduced in an episode of Bones last month, which got traction with the veteran series’ fans. However, Fox already has Terra Nova and X Factor on tap for fall and Touch penciled in for midseason, so the network will probably pick up as few as 2 new series. With the Ethan Hawke starrer Exit Strategy and medical drama Weekends at Bellevue gaining momentum, it is probably smart to look at alternatives for The Finder. Keeping the show alive with a short order would make it easy for Fox to give it a full-blown series pickup if any of its other new series fails.

Even though I spent this whole post gushing about how much I love Emily, I think it would be perfectly possible to continue Bones as-is without Emily for seven episodes and everyone would be fine. They could just bring in more interns (Mr. Nigel-Murray is my favorite) or some fun guest stars and it would be all good. We’ll see what happens.

I love Bones as well. I have to say though, the chemistry between Bones and Booth hasn’t been what it has been in the past and I miss that. They use to play off each other so much better in the past, now it seems forced, but whateves, I will always watch it till the end.

I really hope that finder show doesn’t get picked up-that was by far and away the worst episode of Bones EVER. (and I’m even including the awful show where they ret-conned how Bones and Booth first met)

It was just a awful premise and none of the characters were interesting. And while I LOVE LOVE Saffron Burrows, that was the worst accent I’ve ever heard from her.

Now to the real question-when is Angela going to pop? She’s been preggers forever!

  3. ladybert62 says:

She is beautiful – the dress is ugly. I am sure they can work around the pregnancy. By the way, the books are better (I have read all of them); the TV series is nothing more than a soap opera – the books are not.

Like Bones ok, But I am really starting to dig Body of Proof with Dana Delaney

  5. Hanh says:

I love the orange dress! Its one of the better pregnancy dresses out there. And the accent with the gold necklace is great.

I didn’t like the Finder episode so much only because it was TOO much of them! I wanted more bones and friends, not them. But I do love Michael Clark Duncan 🙂

I would prefer they start exploring the other characters while Emily is away than do more Finder episodes.

  6. Hautie says:

Such a pretty girl with great eyes. I also love the dress. Very flattering. Plus I am so tired of seeing pregnant girls in hooker inspired clothing. It is nice to see a cute summery dress.

I am kind of surprise that FOX is just now picking up the show. Geez it is one of their most successful drama’s.

Then again FOX seems only interested in Idol and Glee. I am still annoyed that Bones was moved this season. So it plays opposite Grey’s.

  7. Corina says:

I’ve been so annoyed with this show even though I love it! That spinoff thing was super irritating – I might have enjoyed the premise if I knew I was going to be watching an entirely different show. There was almost none of the usual characters on screen for more than a few minutes. Plus the integrated car commercials are really starting to get on my nerves.

  8. someone says:

    I love that show!!!!

  9. Peachy says:

She looks really good here! Love the necklace!!

  10. Melissa says:

@Corina- I agree – that embedded car commercial was so over the top ridic!

  11. BeeCee says:

I’m so in love with everyone on the show! I love love love Bones, it’s one of my favorite series.

I watch this with my mom and a couple episodes ago she just said “has Bones gained weight?” which resulted in me squealing like an idiot saying YES! She’s preggers!! Then we both squealed like dumbasses….

I think whatever they decide to do will be fine. Everyone has great chemistry and everything will roll without a problem.

  12. bluhare says:

Another Bones fan here! If they think about writing it in they shouldn’t make Booth the father. But I think they can work around it with the clothes/screen thing.

My favorite intern is the guy who’s always depressed. Can’t remember his name!

  13. Hakura says:

It’s strange… From some angles, Emily is *gorgeous*, with strong facial features (sort of like a ‘greek goddess’)…& her eyes are amazing.

But from other angles, her jaw causes her face to look odd. Looking at her ‘front on’, her jaw is very severely square & masculine, which sort of takes away from the rest of her pretty features.

  14. Rachel says:

She looks unbelievably gorgeous to me here–it must be that “pregnancy glow”. I normally only find her averagely attractive.

Her makeup/hair/styling are all beautiful, too. I love the gold necklace with the orange dress.

  15. TQB says:

I don’t watch the show regularly but I love all the Deschanels – they are so lovely and interesting. Their mother appeared in Twin Peaks – same eyes! I don’t mind the orange dress, I think the cut is nice for maternity and the color is very vibrant. She’s totally pulling it off.

  16. Amy says:

I started watching Bones last year (season 5). I want to eventually catch up and watch the first 4 seasons. I’m a little behind on episodes because I’m in Spain so I have to download them (plus grad school eats up my time argh!).

I love Emily and David! And she is just so gorgeous. She has the most beautiful eyes.

  17. jane16 says:

Emily is very beautiful and classy. One of the few celebs that actually looks better in person. Amazing skin and eyes. Bones is one of the few series we watch regularly.

  18. liv says:

Mr. Nigel-Murray is my favorite intern as well

  19. 4evaRedd says:

I think my husband is secretly in love with her–he watches the daily re-runs and new episodes every Thursday. She is stunning in that orange dress. Very obviously one of the most beautiful women on television right now.

  20. Deven says:

That Bones episode with the Finder was the most uninteresting show this producing group has ever tried to palm off on its viewers. It’s a damn good thing for the show its audience is one of the most forgiving ones a show could have. The show’s runners have made some of the most terrible decisions I’ve ever seen on the air. Bones now seems like a drag to watch. It’s really too bad.

  21. Lindy says:

BIG Bones fan, too. (And I am *hating* the over the top product placement/commercials lately as well. Gross. Stop it). I actually like that orange dress–the problem for me is the thick, black, chunky shoes. They don’t work with the color or length of the dress, which is so light and summery. I’m kind of on the fence about what an Emily-free story arc would do to the show. I guess they could send her off on field work someplace exotic and have her skype in so it’s just close-ups. But honestly? I would kind of love them to work the pregnancy into the show!

  22. dj says:

Emily D. is glowing in these pictures. Gorgeous! The Finder episode really was awful. I was so annoyed that there was no prelude to let us know it was basically not a Bones episode. My favorite intern is the blue-collared blonde. I like his backstory the best. I would much rather have Zach back though. King of the lab!

  23. liv says:

it’s official, the finder has been picked up.

on a side note, zooey deschanel’s sitcome has also been picked up by fox

  24. Erin says:

I think that Bones & Booth’s relationship has been a long time in the making. I would love to see them together as a couple. I just watched the season finale and think the it’s awesome that Brennan is pregnant. It will be cool to see them together with a child. I’m really looking forward to season 7 coming out…

  25. Nicole says:

the show will not be cancelled! brennen is pregnant in the show to so they adapt that with her real life pregnancy 🙂
