Call me crazy, but I would take a million “Big southern/lion hair and Halston” red carpet appearances rather than this fugness. These are photos of Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband Matthew Broderick at the NYC Ballet Spring Gala last night. SJP can get Matthew to the ballet, but never to a fashion or charity gala. Or a premiere. But ballet, sure! Nevermind, don’t go there, of course they have a strong marriage, why would you think otherwise? Don’t they look… um, happy together?
Anyway, in my mind, SJP’s style reflects her mood. She wore this absolutely God-awful Valentino for the NYC Ballet event, and now I think that Mr. Valentino must totally hate her. Why would a designer even MAKE this ugly dress, much less give it to one of his best clients? SJP knows it sucks too – trust me, SJP knows how to work a gown, and she knows how to ensure a gown is photographed to make it look amazing, and look at what she’s doing with her styling and body language. She draped a purse across her chest, her hair is meh, and she’s got a look on her face that says “I wish I had lion hair and I was flying solo.”
Also looking rough? Brooke Shields. I know the whole “flower boob” thing is in style right now, but this is the wrong way to do it.

Bits of this skate close to being gorgeous. I think it is precisely that that highlights the extreme fug.
Actually, I almost love it. The colors do wonders for her. The only thing that mars it is the ‘vesty’ thing that is going on with the top.

What does it say about me that I can see the *i don’t know* crinkles (joints) in her pelvic region? And what does it say about the designer? Even if I’m just seeing them through some sort of “liner” that is…not right.

It’s not so bad – SJP’s dress would be fine on Vanessa Paradis, or just the top half with jeans and casual hair on Nicole Richie, or the bottom half made into a clingy dress and put on Halle Berry. That said, I like that she’s covered her arms, because they were giving me nightmares!

Unfortunately the off-white top washes her out, SJP needs a stronger color next to her face. Slinging the purse across her body and wearing a black bra doesn’t help. It’s a nice dress that would look better on a tall woman; Charlize Theron would look great in it.
SJP’s mood is revealed in her hair which is the way I feel having to put on a Valentino gown immediately after jogging 3 miles. The gown is not that bad, it just looks that bad.

Nah, not even close. She has worn some hideous things – I’d rank this one in the top half. Which says a lot about what she wears.
From big hair, to semi-slicked hair. She needs something to soften her face more. Her eyes photograph pale, so she needs something to open her eyes more as her heavy eye make-up makes her look like Little Orphan Annie with an eyeless stare. Both she and Shields should not have worn either of those dresses–dreadful, the both of them. Johnson and her date–no words.

Actually Mr Valentino is not running his maison anymore. He was a master and women always looked queens of style and class wearing his outfits.
The young designers that the new Valentino owners hired to create the new collections need to find something new and fresh and classy asap.
Having said this, SJP is also to blame, because she has plenty of choices and recently she is consistently making the wrong ones. Besides, here she did her best to have this outfit looking miserable: necklace, hair, make up, bag, a sad look, overall a big mess.

I like that dress; it’s beautiful and it’s probably really beautiful in real life with beautiful colours and fabric and beading and lace. Yet it seems “simple” and casual to me and maybe SJP felt that way too, that’s why she slung her bag across her chest.
I actually think Rachel McAdams red lace monstrosity at Cannes is worse.

Poor Brooke. As others have already pointed out, she IS looking rather mannish. I used to have a chick crush on her, but it’s true she’s really not aging well.
I’ve seen some of the crap SJP has worn over the years. Her dress is meh but not, by far, the worst. BROOKE however looks like a train wreck. She appears to have a small animal hot-glued to her chest with a big white thingy bedazzled to it! Then, to top it off, she crunched up some Reynolds Wrap and, just for fun made a necklace. Ugh.
@Lisa (first post): I was just at the Gaga post where she has all the cat botox and chipmunk filler and I was wondering – what is worse to do the botox and look like a young ET or to do nothing and look like SJP. I’ve always thought SJP looked old for whatever age she is at the time.

The dress looks like the white top was an afterthought. It actually looks like the dress would be pretty cool without the white top, as just the v-neck underneath. Unfortunately for Sarah, she’ll always look like she counts by slapping her foot on the floor, poor thing.
I actually don’t mind it. The other outfits are atrocious though.
What @26 beat me to it. Valentino retired a few years ago and the two shoe designers, who took over after his immediate successor (Alessandra Faccinetti) was unceremoniously dumped after two collections, are quite honestly not up to the job. In my opinion, of course. The SJP dress, while not completely awful, is an example.
Also, Mr Valentino is actually Mr. Garavani. Valentino is his first name. I recommend “The Last Emperor” to anyone who wants to see something very entertaining; a documentary that was made to coincide with his retirement. Watching Valentino and his long time business partner Giancarlo Giammetti argue about the placement of ruffles on haute couture is a riot.
