Why is Rachel McAdams doing the tired Marilyn Monroe thing?

I hate to say it, but I beginning to think that Rachel McAdams has significant style problems. I’ve been in denial about it for a long time, but her tacky-ass style on full display at the Cannes Film Festival, and now she’s brought it stateside. These are photos from last night’s NYC screening of Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris. Rachel managed to make this Louis Vuitton dress look like a pageant gown. And she was all done up in some kind of homage to Marilyn Monroe too, what with the shorter blonde curls, the near wardrobe malfunction in the wind. I would have thought Rachel is more original than a cheap Marilyn homage.

Sure, I guess the dress isn’t really BAD (although I don’t think it’s good either). It’s certainly better than the ice-skater’s Marchesa and that hideous beige thing that I want to forget. But here’s my theory for young Hollywood celebrity women: The Marilyn thing is so overdone, over-played and tired. It’s the styling choice of last resort for ladies who view themselves as some sort of deep, tragic blonde bombshell. Considering Rachel isn’t even known as a blonde, her style choices just frighten me at this point. Do you think Michael Sheen prefers her as blonde?

Oh dear, it’s not a good look for her. She doesn’t have the body for it and the outfit looks cheap. I agree the MM look is tired.

Maybe in reality she doesn’t give a damn about clothes, so she lets others make the final decisions. I hope that’s the case.

  2. Giles says:

She always looks amazing and very en vogue.

I guess you have to understand fashion to really get it.

  3. Sue says:

she looks beautiful. The slit to the thigh is really popular right now..She is a classic beauty I think that she would wear anything and look amazing.

  4. Ari says:

She looks ravishing and not sure where she looks bad.

  5. poodlemom says:

Oh, look….it’s Woody Allen and his daughter!

  6. junipergreen says:

I just sort of realized once and for all that I just don’t find her at all pretty or attractive. Tried. Can’t do it.

  7. Zoya says:

I wonder if it’s awkward for her being around Woody Ellen and his daughter/wife. “so… how did you guys mee.. I mean… the weather is nice today… yeah.”

  8. whitedaisy says:

She is not likely going for the Marilyn look, but it just came off that way when the stylist curled her hair into a “new red carpet” look.
She gets a pass from me.
Now Woody Allen, on the other hand, and his sordid life story, is the epitome of tragic; overplayed, over-done and tired.

  9. gloaming says:

    She looks lovely.

she lot bet. you know she and michael were betting and she lost so h picked out THAT for her.

I have never understood the fascination with Marilyn Monroe and the ensuiing cult.

    Woody Allen and his wife/daughter are major C R E E P Y.

  12. lin234 says:

She’s been looking really pretty and happy lately.

  13. S says:

I think she looks gorgeous here! The dress is very pretty and flattering. If anything, I’m getting more of a vamped-up Daisy Buchanan vibe than Marilyn…

  14. Ron says:

This is not bad, it’s just off. It comes across as costumey, not fashion at all. If she had changed the shoes to something delicate and strappy and had blown out sexy hair it would have been right on.

  15. BB says:

Yuck woody Allen. RM looks cute and happy.

  16. Annie says:

This is actually a general 50’s hollywood inspired look. Marilyn is just the one people associate it with the most. Unfortunantly it’s more recently become played out by the likes of Lindsay Lohan.

  17. endoplasmic_ridiculum says:

she’s looked better…. She’s a beautiful- I think simple is better for her.

  18. KateNonymous says:

Whether or not that’s a “Marilyn” look, it doesn’t work on her–it makes her look tired and older. For the life of me, I do not get the big deal about McAdams (she seems like an Elizabeth Banks-alike, and one Elizabeth Banks is plenty, IMO). But I think she does look cuter as a brunette.

  19. thegreatdefender says:

It’s more a Jean Harlow look, Marilyn had short hair ya know

  20. Camille says:

I love Rachel, but this look isn’t good.

  21. sandra says:

Yeesh, Soon Yi must be a great conversationalist …

  22. jemshoes says:

I think every celebrity wants to channel MM at least once (or twice) in her life / career – like playing princess for day, it’s let’s play an icon for a day! No harm unless you start to over-identify. Actors are intriguing: how do they pretend to be other people their whole (professional) lives without feeling as if they’re like 10 people on the inside? Unless this is why they become actors!

  23. Newbie says:

I think she looks like a bombshell. But oh well. Different strokes, I guess. Yeah, it’s really an old hollywood look, but she looks beautiful and she’s working it well.

  24. normades says:

Loooove Rachel no matter what she wears! Yeah, the Marilyn look was a miss but I really liked the black ensemble she wore later that day.

Sheen’s suit looks like an oil slick. Awful. He’s not a “handsome” man and should wear more classic well fitting suits.

  25. scotchy says:

yes she is looking awful, and tacky, but in her defense she is actually a natural blonde.. and she is so nice, i picking at her but i will say this, homegirl needs a stylist stat!
