Jessica Simpson sounds smart: “not being anorexic was great for branding”

jsimplucky1
As we know, Jessica Simpson is a clothing, shoe and handbag mogul. She’s now taken to talking about her business, and her relationship, instead of going on about her bodily functions and hygiene. It’s a better media strategy to say the least. Soon-to-be mummy Jess covers the most recent issue of Lucky Mag. The interviewer met with her at her office, and they paint a picture of a thoughtful but goofy woman running a multi-million dollar business. It’s a nice turnaround for her. In Lucky, Jess talks about her weight gain being an issue in the tabloids, and says that being an average size helped her brand and earned her compliments from fans. She also said she’s “still confident” no matter her size. It’s a nice message actually.

When she started dating Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and gained some happiness weight, she was cruelly mocked by the press after she was shot in high-waisted jeans onstage at a country music concert. Simpson’s size became a newsstand seller and the subject of running jokes in tabloids and blogs: “What happened to the hot chick from Newlyweds?” But everything seemed to shift when Simpson did the unthinkable: Instead of spending six hours a day on the Exercycle and going on a juice cleanse, she ditched that celebrity ideal and said, “I like the way I look.”

And did women respond. Her fans rallied around her on Internet message boards (“No matter what size Jessica Simpson is she is gorgeous!”) and on the street: “All kinds of women started coming up to me and saying what an example I was setting by not constantly dieting,” she tells me as we sit at a conference table in her airy, high-ceilinged showroom. People stopped seeing her as the ditzy blonde with the hot body, and instead Simpson became a real person with real, familiar struggles. “Everybody fluctuates, but I’m open about my weight and I’m still confident,” Jessica says. “I didn’t cry about it too much.”

Ironically, as her waist grew larger, both her life and her fashion business, which she launched in 2005, improved dramatically. “I got so much scrutiny for putting on extra pounds, but I think that the decision not to make myself anorexic was actually great for branding,” she says. “Because when you’re really, really skinny, not everybody can relate to you.” All those supportive ladies, it seems, went out and bought what Simpson had to offer: affordable apparel in all styles. And all sizes. The Jessica Simpson Collection is now expected to bring in almost a billion dollars by the end of 2012. That is at least one zero more than most other celebrity fashion lines, and more than the GDP of Grenada.

Today, Simpson obviously enjoys her role as fashion mogul. “I love this green!” she says, touching a piece of fabric pinned to a board in her showroom. The walls are decorated with enormous, gorgeous photos of Simpson modeling the clothes she designed. Below them hang inspiration boards with photos ripped from magazines, along with actual pieces of hers—a floral-top bikini is pinned to one board, a pair of aquamarine shorts is tacked up to another, bangles sway on a third. “We should do a skirt like that,” she says, pointing to a photo of a model in a long denim skirt with a really high slit. As someone behind us takes notes, other people scurry past, opening Fed Ex shipments of fabric samples and scheduling a photo shoot involving a bathtub full of fake diamonds. Tina Simpson, Jessica’s mother, who is co–creative director of the collection, hovers in the distance. “I do the fun part,” Jessica tells me, “and I let them stress about the details.”
Simpson says her personal shopping habits have changed: “I’m more particular now because I know what things are costing the manufacturers. So I know when I’m getting ripped off!”

When I ask for specifics, she says, “Mom, what’s that itchy fabric that I hate?”

Tina, across the room, yells, “Well, you’re not a big fan of stretched satin!”

Jessica says, “Oh, gosh. But we sell so much of it!”

Tina holds up three bridesmaid-looking dresses in jewel tones. “We have a beautiful array of stretched satin,” she says. “And we sell the haboobie-joobies out of these things!” Everybody laughs.

[From Lucky]

So it sounds like Jessica’s mom is the brains of the operation. She couldn’t even remember the name of the fabric she hates. Meanwhile Jess says she’s in no hurry to get married at all. She told LuckyWhen I got engaged, everyone thought I would get married immediately, but I have not put a single dress on, and by the time this comes out I will not be married! We’re just enjoying being engaged right now—and that’s honest.” Well that’s another smart decision on her part, whether she made it consciously or Eric is getting cold feet or whatever. We’ve heard up until now that it’s Jessica who is putting off the wedding after she learned that she was pregnant, and that her family doesn’t approve of freeloader Eric.

This interview was conducted before Jessica made an announcement about the pregnancy, and of potential babies and possibly slowing down her business she said “I feel like I do chill out, but I also want to keep this going. If it has my name on it, I want my stamp of approval to be on it. I want to keep my customers coming back. So it’s going to be important to me in these next years to stay focused on the collection.” So will Eric be a stay at home day while Jess runs her empire? I never quite saw her that way before.

    Go Jessica.
I think she is smarter than people think.

  2. brin says:

After reading the Kim K post, Jess is a refreshing change. She seems happy with where she is now, wish her the best.

  3. Bite me says:

    Good for simpleton

  4. Eleonor says:

@Evelynn: I thought the same thing.

  5. KLO says:

    More power to her.

  6. Venefica Delirium says:

This woman used to annoy me a lot more, but now she seems pretty benevolent by comparison to all the other shitheads plaguing newsstands.

As long as I don’t have to hear her sing, we’re cool.

  7. Brenda says:

I like Jessica, I always have. In her interviews she always comes across as pretty self aware and down to earth to me.

  8. Agnes says:

I’m totally liking Jessica these days.

  9. CG says:

What did they do to her face in that header pic? It looks like they airbrushed the hell out of it! Her face is super-slim and the rest of her body is larger. She just looks pageant queen-y.

  10. Me says:

She’s hot, doesnt express herself well, but she’s pure business… with a little mix of pure fucking luck.

  11. Amber Rose says:

    i absolutely love her.

she’s sumb as a bag of rocks but she’s got a great spirit about her.

im happy she’s gonna be a mom, cant wait to see that baby

  12. Hautie says:

    I still find her harmless.

The one thing that has always stood out to me, is Jessica is not a mean girl.

Look at every other female her age in LA in this industry. Practically everyone of them are notorious for being hateful and self centered.

I have never gotten that vibe off Jessica. Can’t say the same for her sister though.

  13. gab says:

Jessica Simpson is so naturally pretty. Looking at the home page of CB, seeing her picture side by side with a pic of Jessica Biel makes Simpson look even better! I hope she continues to have a successful business, I like her.

  14. Beatrix says:

I realize that plain-ness and simplicity for the average sells but if she could at least get a stylist who can dress her? It is perplexing that she has something considered a “fashion empire” and she isn’t innovative or even graceful or sophisticated in her own raiment – I don’t get it. Or maybe that’s why her line is successful? BC the Wal-Mart customers want some variety? Don’t really mean to be mean but sheesh I am tired of the non-talented getting more than every other person due to sheer luck – it isn’t right.

  15. P.J. says:

It’s refreshing to see someone break away from the current cookie-cutter image of beauty. Today’s celebs look so much alike I have trouble telling them apart.

  16. Emma says:

Yay, Jess! I actually love her shoe line. Seems like she found her comfortable place now. Proud of her!

  17. mel says:

I give her props on how she handle her pregnancy and all. Unlike some celebrities who want to fake theirs and throw it up in our faces.

    I wish her well.

  18. CJW says:

Love her. The girl puts out some great clothes that real women can wear. And her shoes are to freaking die for.

  19. flutters says:

Jessica’s being disingenuous. She was clearly dieting and trying to lose weight prior to her pregnancy.

It’s smart PR to try to revise history and turn what she clearly saw as a weakness into a perceived strength.

  20. missie says:

She’s darling. I am hoping she’s maturing out of the habit of speaking of her flatulence and belching….because that was my only peeve.
    She’s just super cute.

  21. Dudette says:

She and her family sound every bit as fame-hungry as the Kardashian clan. So much emphasis on how much they’re selling. Jessica deciding not to be anorexic, not because it’s a killer and dangerously unhealthy and she realised she’s got more self-worth than that but because “it’s good for branding”. Good grief.

  22. blc says:

In psychology and logic, rationalization (or making excuses) is an unconscious defense mechanism in which perceived controversial behaviors or feelings are logically justified and explained in a rational or logical manner in order to avoid any true explanation and made consciously tolerable by plausible means.

We already know that Jessica was dieting and working out with Tracy Anderson to try to get back in shape. It appears that she didn’t have the motivation or the will power to lose the weight so now she is changing her story and rationalizing that actually she prefers to be heavy. I don’t buy that for one second. if there was a magic pill that Jessica could take to go back to the weight she was when her career was actually hot, she would take the pill in a second. Guaranteed.

  23. Ah! says:

Having dated several Yale football players before, all I can say is run Jess, run.

  24. considerit says:

what about the fake boobs? that doesn’t exactly send the message to women/girls to love your body type/size as it is. it’s still “adjusting” your body to meet a standard made to appeal sexually to men.

  25. Ronnie says:

@Beatrix, I’m sorry girl but her shoes ALONE average about $80 and THAT isnt ‘walmart’. Not to mention her handbags, wallets and clothing which I bought a cute patterned tunic for 50 after sale price… Originally 80. I’m a college student and thats pricey to me especially since I could easily have gone to Walmart or Forever 21.

Anyways, its obvious she’s just the face of the company and its not Versace or DG or Chanel for goodness sake. Part of her charm is that she is herself and lets it all hang out. And if we’re going to harass peeps about not dressing the part of fashion mogul… Can we kidnap the Olsens and brush their hair and get some fitted clothes on them?

  26. Ronnie says:

    @BLC… Wouldnt we all?

  27. Courtney says:

Love Jessica Simpson always have not all women are naturally small. in some ways Jessica reminds me of a Blonde Lynn Redgrave although Lynn was a bulimic at one time

  28. Trillion says:

    What Brin said.

  29. TaylorB says:

I have to agree with others, while I am usually afraid of heels, her shoes are really cute, comfy and not ‘tippy scary’ as heels can be. A gal I know just bought one of her purses and it is really cute and well made.

  30. JPX says:

“In psychology and logic, rationalization (or making excuses) is an unconscious defense mechanism in which perceived controversial behaviors or feelings are logically justified and explained in a rational or logical manner in order to avoid any true explanation and made consciously tolerable by plausible means.” Right on, B/C! That’s called “cognitive dissonance” and that’s exactly what’s going on with Jesssica Simpson!

  31. blc says:

@Ronnie, yep I imagine we all would. But I also imagine that most people would be willing to admit that they had gained weight and were struggling to lose it. They wouldn’t put on the facade of, oh it’s actually better being heavy, I like it.

  32. Lady_Luck says:

    I love her. So much.

But still gutted that she and her TRUE soulmate parted over their silly pride. Neither of them have been the same since 🙁

  33. Darlene says:

@Considerit – I don’t think her boobs are fake. I have a dear friend who started out with Jessica’s OLD body and then she put on weight and now she has Jessica’s exact CURRENT body, including boobs. Her boobs got HUGE, so much bigger than anyone ever, every would have through her nice-sized ones would have gotten ever. And then she had a baby and LOOKOUT, they are even bigger. And even losing pregnancy weight, they are still huge. I think Jess’ are real.

also, I really liked this interview and I am starting to like her. Urk. I thought that would never happen, but there it is. I think she’s smarter than we all give her credit for.

  34. theaPie says:

I just looked at some of her stuff and it looks really nice. I wish I could afford it.

  35. ahoyhoy says:

Jessica may have been working with a trainer before she got pregnant, but that’s not hypocritical. She’s just a naturally curvy woman who was trying to keep trim in a HEALTHY way. She specifically used the word ‘anorexic’, because she knows the only way she could be ‘Hollywood thin’ would be EXTREMELY dangerous dieting (aka anorexia).

And it’s not like she ‘decided’ not to be anorexic for ‘branding’—-the article makes clear that she realized AFTER starting the clothing line, after so many compliments from strangers, that the public appreciates a woman who is comfortable not being 99 pounds.

I can’t wait to see that baby too! Congrats, Jess!

  36. Shannon says:

@blc that’s totally possible. I study rationalization, but in the context of crime (i.e. mechanisms for rationalizing criminal behavior). But your explanation fits for someone who isn’t a criminal. It’s also possible that she just got tired of trying to be tiny and fighting her body’s natural state. I think I’ve seen that she does still exercise with a trainer (well maybe not so much now that she has a bun in the oven), she’s just not going overboard or starving herself to get the washboard abs.

  37. BerMan says:

I’m ambivalent about this story. You know she will drop the weight so fast after the baby is born. The interview didn’t sway me in thinking she’s on target, just she is still Jessica giggles, bangles and bubble gum.
Great that she has a good family and team support.

  38. flutters says:

But everything seemed to shift when Simpson did the unthinkable: Instead of spending six hours a day on the Exercycle and going on a juice cleanse, she ditched that celebrity ideal and said, “I like the way I look.”

What’s ironic about this is I distinctly remember a Jessica tweet where she talked about being on some kind of Asian tea cleanse earlier this year, very soon after she started dating her fiance.

For the record, I DO think she has stopped with the yo yo dieting since getting pregnant and hopefully she won’t go back to it. I’m just objecting to the revisionist history for marketing purposes.

  39. Sara says:

I like her a lot more after that interview.

  40. cici says:

@flutter: I dieted too, for my wedding! And I’ll bet plenty of normal brides-to-be did/do too. /shrug/ about the disingenuous comment.

I like Jessica. She has horrible man-sense, but I think she’s as real as ya get in the celebrity world.

  41. flutters says:

I dieted too, for my wedding! And I’ll bet plenty of normal brides-to-be did/do too.

She wasn’t dieting for her wedding. This was a cleanse she did like a month after she & Eric Johnson started dating.

Here, I found the tweet for ya. June 2010:

“Shocked my system with a vegan diet, special Pu-erh tea from China, and cupping since friday! Who am I right now? This might be too clean!”

    So it’s revisionist history.

I think the Simpson family’s taken to marketing “real” because they see profit potential there. They’re entitled to do that but based on her history I still don’t believe Jessica truly bought into what she’s selling.

Kelly Clarkson? Now she’s real not to mention oozing with real talent. Jessica Simpson? Not so much.

  42. Happy21 says:

I am loving her more and more these days. She’s always been adorable to me but I, personally, am feeling like I can relate to her more and more even though she is a celeb. THAT is why her clothing line is selling circles around the competition. It is reasonable priced and is made for the everyday woman. Her jeans come in all sorts of different fits, for tall, for short, for just right. That’s hard to find. Most womens jeans come the standard 32′ leg. I think its fab. I don’t go out looking to buy the stuff but I do find myself gravitating towards it because its made for real life, not the runway.

I’m in her corner for the long haul I think! Go Jess!!

  43. lolas says:

This is how bad things have gotten: I admire her for not garnering fame through a ‘leaked’ sex tape.

  44. Baylor says:

Jessica has always fought her natural body size and was always the proudest at her tiniest. Anyone remember Daisy Dukes and Newlyweds?? She has also admitted in other interviews about crying alot and being devastated when the “mom jeans” incident happened. So, once again, she is rewriting history.

  45. bubbly says:

It’s the pregnancy hormones that help her brain for now, that’s why she is sounding smart. But wait until she pops, then she will be back to her fat-greasy hair-is this fish or rabbit-airhead self. 🙂

  46. Stubbylove says:

I don’t love Jessica or think she’s the best and I don’t think we’ve underestimated her intellgence – come on people – your bar has been lowered so low recently b’cuz of LL & KK – Blondie is as deep as a kiddie pool. I do, however, think she’ll be a good mom and can support herself and her family through legitimate means. For that, wish her the best.

  47. Sumodo1 says:

    Haboobie-joobies?

  48. Kara Ann says:

I can believe that Simpson has tried to lose weight (and will again), I’m sure. That doesn’t mean that she is trying to fit into the HW cookie cutter image of attactive size 0 (or less) anorexic super-twit It just means that she is trying to improve/maintain her current weight. Since she has made tons of money off her fashion, she no longer has to be super-skinny to be super successful. Probably, a huge sigh of relief for her that after the singing/reality show career tanked, she found something that she could do (and makes tons of money doing) that also allowed her to eat! Good for her.

  49. Mae East says:

I think this is an extremely sympathetic interview. Imagine how easily the exchange with her mother could have been contextualized differently to highlight how simple she is. But it’s a “Lucky” cover story, so all her quotes are interpreted very generously.

  50. moja31 says:

umm how about not starving yourself is great for your mental and physical health. she’s not at all comfortable with her normal size, because she still tries to convince herself and others that she’s a size 2 or whatever she last claimed. she’s still contributing to a distorted discussion about weight; wake me up when she stops doing that, then she’ll really sound smart.

  51. SueAnn says:

She is a very pretty woman. Hope Eric doesn’t break her heart.

  52. KsGirl says:

I’m with those who are of the opinion that JSimp is smarter than she is usually given credit for. I’ve always thought this, even in the Newlyweds days.

And her shoe line is great, and very well priced.

  53. okeydokey says:

I have no issue with this girl. I think she’s fine. But her fiance looks like early 90’s era Tad Martin from “All My Children” and it freaks me out.

  54. cici says:

@flutters – yeah, she’s a dieter. So she dieted then (started seeing Eric) and then again before her planned wedding (with gwyneth’s fakey shakey Tracey trainer). I see your point. She has tried for many years to fit into the skinny mold, but it don’t fit!

  55. Marybel says:

Tad Martin, YES!! That makes me LOL…I was thinking Chevy Chase, but TM hits the nail on the head.
Jessica’s bimbo persona was constructed by her pervy father. Left to her own instincts, she would probably have been a different type of celebrity. She’s doing the best she can now, having thrown away the best life she could have had with Nick. Her dad is a total ass.

  56. DesertRose says:

@ Sumodo1 – right? I like Jessica and all, but I came away thinnking “Haboobie-joobies? No wonder Jessica seems dense.” Such a weird phrase =)

  57. Hattie says:

lovely blue coat with a black collar in the last pic!

  58. photo jojo says:

Ok, I am an admitted shoe wh*re. Seriously, I have a problem. From where I sit, justifying the price of some Kate Spades or such, $80 for Jessica Simpson shoes is pretty reasonable. Her styles are amazing, they do wonders for my legs, and they wear well. So no, it’s not WalMart but… it’s a pretty good value for the money.

  59. gee_gee says:

I have grown to like her over the last couple of years. She might not be a genius. She might not be a great actess or singer. But she seems like a real person. I can’t be mad at her.

  60. beclove says:

Met JS in person a year or so ago- she was gorgeous and my husband (who had no clue who she was) was gaping and red in the face over her. She was very gracious as well. Best wishes JS!

  61. J says:

I am glad she is following her own rules. Too many celebrities, and people in general, rush into the marriage thing anyway. Jessica was married once, and she probably wants to be more cautious this time around.

  62. lucy2 says:

I do think she is vastly more likable than most of the tabloid stars. She bugs me when she tries too hard (or PapaJoe tries to shove her down our throats) but right now she seems to be doing well, so congrats and good luck to her.

Anyone else imagine that she doesn’t really do much at her company though? I picture her showing up occasionally and thinking she’s really designing it all, but in reality she’s just the celebrity name on the door (as most companies like that seem to be).

  63. Cletus says:

I dont care, I really love her shoes. I mean, I LOVE them.

  64. Callumna says:

She and Britney Spears are both pretty sweet. Thought both were unhealthy but maybe the starvation weight was even less so.

For these moments while they are still sex tape free I’m gonna support.

Kartrash has definitely lowered the bar.

  65. REDSLIP says:

So what if she did struggle to lose weight and is now saying that she didn’t want to be anorexic? It’s a cop-out, but how many people try to lose weight and fail – there is an entire industry built on that concept. If anything, the fact that she’s positive about the experience after all of the nasty things said about her weight in the media is a show of character and makes her more relatable to most women.

The joke was – that “mom jeans” photo – she was no bigger than the average sized American woman – 5’4″ and 160 odd pounds. She looks healthy, she looks happy, she’s not cracked out or driving drunk, she owns her own business that’s been successful through a recession, good for her. Go Jessica. She looks great.

  66. t says:

lucy2–I get that feeling too. The Camuto Group owns the rights to her name and sells it as a brand to designers as a way to market their creations. Vince Camuto designs the shoes. Red Carter designs the bathing suits. Jones of New York designs the clothes.

I’m sure part of the deal includes allowing Jessica to have a “workshop” where she pretends she’s a designer because she’s tacked some paisley fabric to a board, but she’s really an advertising expense.

When I read this pr piece in Lucky, it reminded me of the ad for Keebler cookies. The Keebler Elves have a workshop just like Jessica’s. Only their workshop is in a tree.

  67. really says:

falling in love with Jessica again was so easy, because she more natural than most of the insanity that is out there in entertainment/music.

  68. F*ckin? amazing things here. I?m very happy to peer your article. Thank you a lot and i am looking ahead to contact you. Will you kindly drop me a mail?
