Angelina Jolie might play “the female Lawrence of Arabia” for Ridley Scott

wenn3365183

Angelina Jolie was just cast in a new film! We can add this one to the pile of films she’s associated with – the Gucci bio-pic, the Cleopatra movie, the Kay Scarpetta franchise, another Salt movie and God knows what else. When is Angelina ever going to get back to work in front of the camera? Unknown. This new film – a bio-pic – sounds like it might start relatively soon, but I’ve heard that before. Jolie would be playing Gertrude Bell, an Englishwoman in the early 20th century who left her wealthy English family to work in the Middle East. Here’s more:

Angelina Jolie is set to premiere her directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey next month, but the actress is also looking towards future acting gigs. Fresh off the Bosnian War-set Honey, Jolie is eyeing another socially conscious pic: a biopic of Gertrude Bell. Jolie has attached herself to the project, titled Gertrude Bell, which centers on the early 20th century pioneer. Described as the female Lawrence of Arabia, Bell worked extensively in the middle east and was responsible for establishing what would become the modern framework for Jordan and Iraq. She worked for British Intelligence during World War I, and was key in the dismantling of the Ottoman Empire and subsequent founding of Iraq.

Jeffrey Caine (The Constant Gardner) is writing the screenplay for Gertrude Bell (tooling it as a star vehicle for Jolie), and THR reports that Ridley Scott is producing with an eye towards possibly directing. It seems like a smart move for Jolie, and if Scott is in the mood for a sprawling character-centric epic I think the team-up could make for a pretty great pic.

However, there are quite a few variables to consider before we firm Bell up as the next project for Jolie and Scott. Jolie is attached to star in Disney’s in-development fantasy Maleficent, and is also attached to the historical epic Cleopatra. The latter is close to gaining screenwriter with Eric Roth, and if David Fincher takes a liking to Roth’s iteration he may finally sign on to direct the project, which would surely kick production into high-gear.

As for Scott, he’s currently on post-production on his sci-fi return Prometheus but he’s eyeing Gucci, based on the iconic fashion family, as well as the serial killer mystery Child 44 for possible follow-up projects. However, THR reports that Fox is already considering sequel possibilities for Prometheus (duh), so if the film is a hit the studio will want to get moving sooner rather than later. Additionally, he’s got the Blade Runner remake that he’s keen to get started on, though the earliest timetable given for that film is 2013 or 2014. Whatever the case, Gertrude Bell seems like an intriguing project and Jolie’s a fine fit with or without Scott behind the director’s chair.

[From Collider]

Ah, so if it happens, it will be another year or two before anything ever happens. Damn it! Jolie needs to work. Brad Pitt was doing that stupid World War Z for too long – that production kept going and going, and I think it’s probably going to be a mess of a film.

Speaking of how much Brad works and how Angelina put her career on the backburner so Brad could complete the neverending film production, In Touch Weekly has a bitchy story about how Angelina is going to get “her way” for the family’s Thanksgiving plans. Keep in mind that Jolie and the kids left Vietnam on Wednesday, after spending six days in country doing fun stuff like go out to eat and go on walking tours and such.

Many American children eagerly look forward to a Thanksgiving feast spread over the family dinner table. But for the Jolie-Pitt brood, the holiday will be spent doing charity work thousands of miles from home – all thanks to mom Angelina.

Instead of going back to LA, Angelina, 36, wants the family to extend their visit in Vietnam – Pax’s birth country – and on Thanksgiving, visit the orphanage he was adopted from, an insider tells In Touch of Pax, who turns 8 this month. “She wants Pax and the others to give back.”

Of course, giving back is an important lesson to teach the blessed bunch – but dad Brad just wants the kids to have a low-key, traditional American holiday.

“Brad thinks they should sleep in their own beds for once,” the insider explains. “Plus, he just wants to kick back and watch football!” Despite his pleas, it seems like Vietnam it will be. “Angelina always wins,” quips the insider. But in this case, the travel-weary children are the real losers.

[From In Touch Weekly, print edition]

So, they already left Vietnam, but I don’t know where they are now. Perhaps Thanksgiving in Cambodia? Or LA? Or Missouri? And why would it be such a big deal for the kids to spend Thanksgiving doing charity work? Those kids live in luxury every day of their lives – and this is the age where you can start giving your kids lessons about civic and social responsibilities, and they’ll actually learn it. Meh, whatever. They’ll probably be in Missouri – where Angelina will get drunk on wine and give the kids lessons on the genocide of the Native American peoples.

God, she looks so beautiful in these pictures! And YAY! @ the news of her working with Ridley Scott.

  2. mln76 says:

Kaiser can you finally give Angelina credit for taking time off to spend with her children (because I remember you saying it was just something she likes to say in interviews). JUST LIKE SHE SAID SHE WOULD several times. Please, pretty please. Can we also give Brad credit for doing the same about a year ago.

Oh and my sister does the same every Thanksgiving with her children. After dinner she goes to a soup kitchen and she says it’s the best part of their year. In no way would giving back on a holiday ruin Thanksgiving.

  3. Seal Team 6 says:

If she does this/if this is true, I think this will be terrific!

  4. NotaBitterBetty says:

I enjoy Angelina in big budgets films like Salt, Wanted, Mr and Mrs Smith, not so much in smaller films like Changeling, Mighty Heart. Not because she’s not a good actress but I think she’s better in larger than life, almost fantastical characters. Think this one if it pans out will be good.

  5. brin says:

Sounds like a great part for her.

  6. Jackie says:

    great movie idea!

  7. Bite me says:

I would love for her to work with Scott… La Jolie loves playing strong women

  8. Addie says:

She would do really well in this and enjoy playing this charachter.

She is kind of the modern version of Gertrude Bell.

  9. Lisa says:

Fingers crossed someones hires a voice coach for her. Accents are not her strong point.

  10. manta says:

A wealthy english woman? Oh, no say it isn’t so!Another dreadful accent in perspective.

  11. Yessiiirrreee says:

This is all kinds of “NO”.

No she isn’t successful in period drama’s.
    No she can’t do accents.
No she can’t act, unless it is an action movie where she has little to no lines, and just shoots guns and runs, and there are big explosions, to fill up the time.

  12. Flim says:

Oh dear, does Brad’s shirt have a built-in scarf?

  13. Sway says:

This role would suck for her.

  14. womanfromthenorth says:

it was a nice read until the end..

I hope they can be in Missouri, Grandparents need to make memories with the kids.

  15. Edita says:

    Sounds great!

She said in a recent interview that Gertrude Bell is one of her heros, so I’m sure she would love to do it.

  16. lisa says:

    @Edita

yeah I remember that. It was when she was promoting KFP 2. So maybe that was a way to let people know it was in the pipeline. She is a planner.

I hope so. We need stories of women adventurers..Great that she is working with Scott. She does work with the best directors.

  17. Lindy says:

Oooo–when I saw the title of this post I KNEW it was Gertrude Bell you’re talking about. She’s a fascinating character, and has definitely been overlooked, so I’m thrilled that she’ll be getting the big-screen treatment. My only gripe is that getting Angelina Jolie to play her would be a terrible idea. It should be someone who can pull off fierce intelligence… This is a role for someone like Cate Blanchett. NOT AJ. Ugh. I’ll be seriously mad if they case AJ.

  18. tapioca says:

Ridley Scott’s last 2 “Historical epics”? Robin Hood and Kingdom of Heaven. Not to mention the other cinematic turds of the last few years, A Good Year and Body of Lies. His name attached to this doesn’t exactly fill me with hope!

  19. olivia says:

A coincidence or not?? Jolie signs up for the Talent agency to find her work. It is announced a few days ago. Then this is announced she is “attached” to this movie. Is it their marketing ploy to make it seem like Jolie is in high demand? That other directors/producers/studio’s better come snatch her up, for roles in their movies, before she signs up for this one?? I don’t think there is a producer/director or a studio clamoring to get her into their movie. She is always “attached” or “in talks” or it stays “in development hell”, but hey it gets her name out there as a way to say that she is just a highly sought after actress.

  20. Seal Team 6 says:

    @min76

I know LOTS of people who go to missions with their families on Thanksgiving and Christmas to help with dinner. I think it’s a good way to help teach kids about how lucky they are.

  21. mln76 says:

    @olivia
She did met with Ridley Scott in September. And was seen holding a script.
Logically speaking she read the script and made her decision to sign on that’s about a month and a half. Seems to be the furthest from ‘development hell’ possible.
What certain people don’t like to acknowledge is that she is one of very few who has script approval(like Brad) so if she doesn’t like the final draft of a film she can pull out. Just like Brad pulled out of State of Play. The movie isn’t going to be ‘on’ with Angie until the final draft is complete and ready to shoot. If at any point she doesn’t like the script she can pull out. It works a little differently than your average rom-com.

“She is always “attached” or “in talks” or it stays “in development hell”,”

Sounds exactly like a 4th rate sitcom actress I know….

  24. Juilia says:

This is why she is offered that role over any other actress her generation as I already written in the previous thread.

Jolie is the front woman in Hollywood right now and at the top of her game, She is a powerhouse who has clout and opens the top executives doors. Roles are done, redone, rewritten around her or not done at all and they stay dead on the drawers. Directors will publicly say they want her in their projects, will fly to her place whatever the country to offer her roles on her terms. Projects that needed financing for years suddenly get green lit and are financed as soon as she is attached to it.

Here is an excerpt summarizing how the Hollywood game play and where Jolie’s asset stand when it comes to Hollywood not the gossip world : At the very top.

“As for Werner Herzog’s movie about the same subject that he’s hoping to make with Naomi Watts, he better get on that. He recently told us he still needs financing to get it made, but you can bet if Jolie’s project rolls, his will be killed dead. But what if they joined forces and it became a Jolie/Herzog pairing instead? Yeah, we’d pay to see that. C’mon Hollywood, make it happen”

    http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/angelina-jolie-to-play-gertrude-bell-in-upcoming-biopic-ridley-scott-eyes-directors-chair

Sorry for her detractors but that’s reality and they better smell the koffee cause she maybe a divisive figure in the gossip world that tend to mix it all but in hollywood she means serious business who is becoming a tripple threat talent wise while adding to her resume with professional smart moves.

She was offered that role because apparently noone in Hollywood would have financed that project until she got on board and became attached to it which confirmed her clout and destroy any fantasy about her supposedly not being able to get some projects.

She is the IT actress right now. She is the one who is offered the biggest amounts of roles of women under 45 in priority over anyone else.

  25. Embee says:

I read Desert Queen a few years ago and fell in love with Bell’s story. Although I think Naomi Watts would do a better job with the role, Jolie can certainly handle it. She works hard to develop her characters, usually to pretty good effect. I hope the film gets made (and I sort of hope Watts stars)!

  26. tapioca says:

Herzog + Watts is a much better idea – then it would be a “Gertrude Bell” movie, instead of an “Angelina Jolie” one.

    Clout ≠ Quality. *coughTheTouristcough*

  27. mln76 says:

@tapioca but weren’t you all just claiming that she has no clout in hollywood??? Now that it’s proven she does it’s clout over quality. Can you people make up your minds. I like Naomi Watts but she’s been in quite a few clunkers and she’s never caught on with a wide audience. So I doubt that it will be easy to find funding when it would be competing with a higher profile project.

  28. Juilia says:

    @ Tapioca.

But Hollywood is a business like any business and every actress in Hollywood can certainly be challenged by any other talent in school.

Putting an actress with a lower profile on a project like that would be like turning their business into a charity act.

No money, no project. That’s how it always work.

Naomi can be as good as you say, apparently not many people were ready to follow her to give credential to her so called ‘better’ when seeing her BOs so that those who are ready to finance a project will back her up based on her credential, BO included.

It’s one thing to be considered the better option, it’s another to prove it by backing her up en masse and build her asset worth so that she become a credible one who will get expensive project financed on her name alone.

And The Tourist may be a turd to you but compared to Naomi’s resume who hasn’t had one single movie reaching ..cough, cough…$30 millions domestically since KING KONG, It’s an even greater insult to Noami’s poor asset and a real testament of her lack of clout in Hollywood cause apparently she can’t even rise at the level of The Tourist domestically wise.

So no need for me to even bring the foreign market for the Tourist and its 278 millions to make it an even grteater point as to why Naomi means serious bomb to execs and why they were not decided to turn that project into some charity act by financing a project they knew would means much worst than the Tourist BO wise if they ever hire Naomi and her maximum $28 millions BO domestic since she became an actress in 1992, with the exception of only three movies among which KING KONG.

  29. NN says:

I read the Gertrude Bell Biography a couple years ago and it’s a great read. There was also an article about Bell in a Smithsonian magazine in 1997 that started my fascination with her. Miss Bell is truly a great figure in history although deeply flawed and seemingly unhappy and that’s why I like her so much. Not sure Jolie is the right charter to play her though.

  30. Lisa says:

    @tapioca
‘Watts is a much better idea – then it would be a “Gertrude Bell” movie, instead of an “Angelina Jolie” one.’
    Agreed.
This is Angelinas biggest issue, (aside from poor accents), she is to polarizing. She overshadows the characters she plays. This is works fine when it comes to works like Salt, Tomb Raider, Mr Mrs Smith where the characters are light, but is a issue with films like the Changeling, where the characters are more complex.
If this movie gets made it will be hard to look past ‘Angelian Jolie’ to ‘Gertrude Bell’.

  31. Sophie says:

I did part of my dissertation on Gertrude Bell and Angelina Jolie is so not right for her.
For starters isnt she a bit young?

  32. toto says:

i want to kiss brad lips

sorry but i just felt so
    🙂

  33. tapioca says:

My OPINION is that she’s a “star”, not the character actress required to play a historical figure and the box office supports this – audiences like her as an action star, but Changeling, A Mighty Heart and Alexander all flopped.

Having thought about it, Kate Winslet would probably be the best fit actually!

  34. Gelina Whiddon says:

If this is true, my congratulations to Angelina Jolie. She is a fantastic actress! Check out what her movies are making at the following website:

    http://boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?id=angelinajolie.htm

  35. G says:

Really looking forward to this. I also tend to prefer reviewing a film AFTER I’ve seen it.

    • Freya says:

Me too! Review it after you’ve seen it!

We don’t even know yet if Jolie has signed on the dotted line. If she has, I hope it will be a smashing movie! I’ll certainly go see it, even if the reviews aren’t good.

  36. toto says:

Angelina will do fine tapioca don’t worry … give her a chance everyone is learning from their previous experience that’s why we get better with age.

  37. Juilia says:

    @ Tapioca

Changeling did 112 millions worldwide which is not a bomb more like underperformance but yet better in both markets than Kate Winslet’s character movies during the same period of time, in both the Reader and Revolutionary Road. Changeling did better than both in both markets.

And Kate has had numerous bombs too, more than Jolie, some even more drastic in her charatecr movie’s niche.

Even in character movies who are other actresses niche Jolie tend to bring more people in the theaters, hence she usually get the more expensive projects.

So again it debunked the fact that she is not a better fraw BO wise as all actresses you named bomb even more, Kate more than many others. “All King’s Men (7+ millions domestic), Little Children (5+ millions), Romance and cigarettes (less than 600,000 domestic) to name a few in the last 5 years are massive bombs. And to be even more explicit, only the current Contagion and The oscarized Reader have matched the production cost of her projects since 2005 (2 out of 9 projects), all the other projects bombed in the domestic and internationally wise except for two others.

Yet it’s only an issue for Jolie and her lesser bombs ?

Again, it all goes down to financing. If you can’t draw more people in the theater in the same genre of movies then investors won’t gamble their money and chose the safest bet and right now, even when it’s about those ‘character movies’, she is a better draw than a lot of other actresses as a lead, included Kate Winslet who has nevered excelled in her niche BO wise.

  38. Heine says:

Oh Christ, she’s gonna try an English accent again?

Why not choose a British actress who actually looks like the woman the film is about-like Helena Bohnam Carter or Kelly MacDonald? Even Kiera Knightley would have been a better casting choice, she was fantastic in Atonement.

    Boo on you, Ridley Scott.

Juilia: So you are saying that it doesn’t matter who is right for the part? Angelina could be severely miscast in this and it doesn’t matter because she brings money to the table?

And it’s $28 million, not millions. That is read as twenty eight million dollars (or however many million dollars). The pluralization lands on dollars, not million.

  39. G says:

Yeah…..what does Ridley Scott know about film, anyway?

    LOLsss

  40. Juilia says:

    @ Heine

Who is right according to who ? This is a statement that would never give a universal answer to start with because it would reeks out of arrogance than one group think they know better who should get financed based on their own taste. Since they are not the ones who finance the project, it’s easy for them to ask for X or Y actress to be featured in a movie that would likely draw even less poeple in teh theaters than the current option they are against.

What certain people fail to understand and ignore when it’s even admitted by the top exec themsleves i’s that it all goes down to financing and that nobody will put his millions to please a fraction of people who want to back an asset who has not proven its drawing appeal. Sorry, that’s not how things work in teh real world. You must prove that you are numerous to back that so called better options.

Hollywood is a BUSINESS, it made products to get consumed. It’s show-BUSINESS with millions of dollars backed by inssurance companies and it’s delusional to think that it will act as a charity organisation just to please a minority of people and throw money on volatile asset when they can get better ones who are backed by insurance company because the demand is more important.

It act exactly like any business, it made projects that are left on the drawers until someone is ready to finance them. The more guarantees the project is surrounded with, the more likley they will finance it and in this case your BO appeal is paramount as it determines where you stand in terms of demand/offer in the market..

And thank you for the spelling lesson. (sarcasm)

    • Freya says:

I agree, Juilia! It’s pointless to go on about who would be better blah blah blah. As if the decision makers are listening.
THEY will decide and the only decision we make is see it or not see it.

It’s most certainly about money. Investors are not going to back a movie unless they feel relatively sure that it will be worth it. I do think Angelina will attract more people worldwide to the theater than Kate W or Naomi W.

To those who say it will be Angelina we’re watching, not Gertrude, I say ‘so what?’ I remember when watching Out of Africa that I was seeing Meryl.

I’m thinking again of Tarantino, who couldn’t make IB until he flew to France and
persuaded Brad to join the cast.

  41. spinner says:

hmmmm…Angelina has a problem with accents… every single time. I agree that she would be too polarizing for this particular role as well. Kate Winslet would be a wonderful choice or how about Cate Blanchet? Maybe even an unknown so as not to over-shadow the main character.

  42. LisaM says:

Rotten Tomatoes has Angelina’s total box office at $1669.2M for the 45 movies she as done.
Now lets compare her to Jennifer Aniston (since thats always the case), she has a total box office of $1136.4M for 30 movies.
Now if you divide the $ by the number of movies they have done you will find they have averaged about the same per movie overall. (Actually Jen is slighty higher.)
So what does this mean? Does it mean that Angelina has made some serious flops and therefore a overrated actor? Does it mean that Jen has had more success and a better actor? Or does it mean nothing at all?

(I only bring this up because lots of posters go on about this movie made X amount of $ and it starred whoever, therefor whoever is better than so and so over there.)

(I do realise that the site is missing $ from certain movies for both Angelia and Jennifer.)

  43. G says:

Art, IS polarizing. That’s what makes it interesting.

  44. LisaM says:

More fun box office $ from Rotten Tomatoes.
    Remember
Angelian Jolie $1669.2M for 45 movies.
Jennifer Aniston $1136.4M for 30 movies.
And for the other suggested choices for this role:
Cate Blanchett $1929.7M for 42 movies.
Keira Knightley $1735.2M for 32 movies.
Naomi Watts $571.3M for 49 movies.

Just goes to show that the total box office $ of an actor, and the box office for a single movie really means nothing in regards to acting ability or lack there of.

  45. yep says:

Yay for Angelina movie news. Lol @ the people not wanting her to do this movie. Afraid she might get ANOTHER Oscar nomination. Lol. Brad Pitt looks greasy and botoxy. Lol

  46. sassenach says:

@ LisaM Why is Jen being brought into this discussion?

The majority of the success of Aniston’s films have been when she is playing a supporting actor to a male lead. Her acting is fine in the movies that she is in but she can not open a movie on her own.

  47. dede says:

Lisa did you also know that Zoe Saldana has a higher avg than both of them and I believe Jada Pinkett has one of the highest lmao..hon in case you didnt notice the movies the posters were referring to are where AJ is the actual star..you think Bruce Almighty made money because of Jen, you think Avatar made money because of Zoe..but SALT made money because of AJ Tourist made money because of AJ and Depp.. changeling made 112mil because of AJ..Wanted made money because AJ(according to Cinemascore 67% of ppl watched it because of her)..

  48. TheOriginalKitten says:

PASS. She never does any movies that seem even remotely interesting to me.

    Second Tapioca & Lisa.

  49. G says:

Scott is savvy enough to know that there are people who don’t care for Jolie.

Clearly, they’re not the demographic the producers are concerned about.

  50. LisaM says:

    @dede
‘according to Cinemascore 67% of ppl watched it because of her)..’
How many people did they poll? Every single one of them? Just one theatre? How reliable is this %?
Bringing in these sorts of arguments are just silly. Just like the total box office $ of the actors I bought up. They are meaningless. There are so many factors to take into account, such as action movies as a rule always do better than rom coms. How many markets the movie was shown in. Who was the star or co star or supporting. Was the movie a popular book/tv show that fans would go see regards who stars. What time of year the movie was released. Who directed it? Marketing budget etc.

My point was that bringing these sort of stats into the discussion is pointless. (Sorry if you missed that.)

  51. Nymeria says:

    O_O

I just popped over to the linked “give the kids lessons on the genocide of the Native American peoples” post, & read some of the comments. I have never until today heard of deep-frying a turkey. What the hell?!

Never got the appeal of AJ as an actress. Sure, she has a beautiful face, but as an actress… meh. Clearly, based on her box office numbers, a lot of people disagree with me regarding her acting skills, and that’s fine.

Anyway, I’m more interested in who thought turkey fryers were a great idea! Check out the UL turkey fryer video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbLqFQQdvoY

That video makes me feel like Neo: “WOH!”

  52. Cheyenne says:

LOL don’tcha love to play with numbers?

This is from http://www.the-numbers.com for the actors mentioned above.

    Angelina Jolie
    Total worldwide gross: $4.7 billion
    Average gross: $57 million

    Jennifer Aniston
    Total worldwide gross: $2.2 billion
    Average gross: $52 million

    Cate Blanchett
    Total worldwide gross: $5.6 billion
    Average gross: $67 million

    Keira Knightley
    Total worldwide gross: $4.5 billion
    Average gross: $96 million

    Naomi Watts
    Total worldwide gross: $1,4 billion
    Average gross: $24 million

The bulk of Blanchett’s box office total came from the LOTR movies and most of Knightley’s total came from the POTC movies.

  53. Cheyenne says:

Nymeria: I have never until today heard of deep-frying a turkey. What the hell?!
    =============================================

I’ve never tried deep-fried turkey myself but every one I’ve talked to who has eaten it says it is absolutely delicious. It is also extremely dangerous to cook indoors. Every Thanksgiving brings more horror stories about houses burning down because the grease ignited and set the kitchen afire. You need an outdoor space away from trees and BIG pot to deep-fry it in.

  54. Yay!! Angie is a fine actress, and she’ll do great.

  55. Deep fryin’ a Turkey** It is very dangerous. A friend burned his hands so severly that it ended his career.

  56. Canuk says:

2.9 billion of Blanchett’s total came from LOTR. At least she was actually acting in the films.

1.9 billion of Jolie’s total came from animation voice over work, of which 1.2 billion was abroad where her voice would have been dubbed over.

  57. Heine says:

    Juilia: I know it’s a business-I work in it 🙂

Yes, it is a business and yes it is important to get box office draws in your film. Blah blah blah.

The trouble you run into is casting someone who isn’t believable in a part and having it lose money in the end because people just didn’t buy it.

Compare apples to apples. Her last biopic, the one about that Marianne something, was years ago and people didn’t really come out in droves to see it.

People like seeing her as a badass, gun toting action hero or a sexy seductress and that’s about it.

As far as it being a good business decision, uh no. She hasn’t proven herself to be great in anything other than action pics in the last few years. She’s waaaaay past her Gia/Girl Interrupted phase.

EDIT: And as some are bound to mention it- I hated her performance in Changeling. I wanted to smack the lips off her face with her ‘Didyoukillmyson???’ rambling. Her getting nominated for best actress for that slow-moving pile of tripe was a total ratings grab.

Anyway, as it is Scott has about a bajillion other things going on right now so maybe she’ll pull out to do something else and they’ll cast it better.

Lastly, what is with getting your dander up about the spelling thing? I personally appreciate it when someone lets me know if I’m saying or writing something incorrectly so that I don’t do it in a more important setting and look like an idiot.

  58. MSgirl says:

Ridley Scott AND Herzog? 2 of my favorite directors! Not gonna argue over who are the stars, both these directors are visionaries, that’s what will make the difference.

  59. Nymeria says:

@ Cheyenne (#53) – Of course it would be delicious. Anything that risks setting the house on fire had better be damn good! 🙂

@ HorsePoor Hanna (#55) – From what I’ve learned today, deep-frying a turkey is indeed incredibly risky. I don’t think I’ll ever try it. I am sorry about your friend. It sounds so inadequate to say, “that is terrible!”, but that is terrible. Does he have the use of his hands at all?

  60. taxi says:

On any big project with a top-level BO draw, they sometimes tweak the scripts to best accentuate the star’s capabilities.

Deep-fried turkey is the best I’ve ever eaten, & I was very skeptical. Very hot oil instantly sears & seals so all the juices stay in. Never try this indoors. Oil must be ridiculously hot for this to work.

  61. GirlyGIrl says:

This is just the kind of smaller indie thing she was looking for eh?

    sark

  62. JP Fan says:

Kaiser, you are a BITCH and your hatred is so obvious! Get a life, try to be objective! Your hatred towards Brad & Angie is disgusting. Brad & Angie are not only awesome actors, they are also great humanitarians, great parents, great loving partners and are the HW royalty! Put that in your pipr and smoke it!
Your snide comment oozes JEALOUSY, period!

Why not comment on the talentless ex-sitcom bitch with NO TALENT and her PR stunts to stay in the limelight, milking her being dumped by THE BP and her hired BF’s thanks to Huvane! Now that is one shallow bitch..I guess you’d rather rag on two talented and good people rather than out CH’s BFF! Gross!

  63. Toe says:

    I want Brad Pitts eyeglasses.

  64. Cheyenne says:

@Heine: Just because you hated her performance in Changeling doesn’t mean she shouldn’t have been honored for it by an Oscar nomination. Since when do you represent the Academy or even a minuscule part of it? Get over yourself.

  65. Cheyenne says:

@JPfan: What the hell did Kaiser say that got your panties in a wad? Jesus, get a grip. I like Brad and Angie too but neither of them walks on water.

  66. Original Chloe ) says:

Sorry guys, but as much as I love Blanchett and Winslet, they’re just not badass enough to play a character like that.

  67. Cheyenne says:

@Nymeria: Alton Brown on the Food Channel demonstrated a “safe” way of frying a turkey. You have to be outdoors on a concrete slab with nothing flammable within 50 feet and wearing flame-retardant clothes from head to foot. I wonder if it’s worth all that, but people who have eaten it swear it is.

  68. Cheyenne says:

@#56: Canuck, is that you minus a C?

  69. emmabee says:

angelina’s face is so beautiful. she looks so much better than bp. i miss seeing her on screen.

also ridley scott = fassbender in prometheus = hopeful fassbender + jolie collab. he can wander the desert with her.

love naomi watts (she deserved a nom for painted veil!), but miss seeing aj.

  70. Nymeria** Yes,he does have the use of his hands now, after numerous surgeries. But,he was never able to handle the horses again. He didn’t have the strength in them after the nerve damage.Cheyenne really gave some good advice. As for me,turkeys gonna bake in the oven.

  71. Cherry Rose says:

@JP Fan – Where is the hate in this post? I believe that Kaiser is a fan of Brad and Angelina, but because she writes a gossip blog, she tries not to be totally biased on the Brad or Angelina posts. Same with the Aniston posts. Kaiser doesn’t really like Aniston, but she tries write in a neutral tone, but does let it be known she’s not a fan of her.

And personally, you need to get a life. It’s quite hypocritical for you to call Aniston nasty names and pretty much wish horrible things upon her, yet you freak out and attack people because they happen not to worship the ground Angelina and Brad walk on.

And before you begin on me, yes I do like Angelina. I’m definitely not a loonie, but I like her humanitarian work, the fact she is a good mother, and she’s committed to being a mom and her humanitarian work.

But, I’m not above pointing out when people take this whole Angelina vs. Jennifer too far.

For instance, Angelina fans ask why those who don’t like Angelina seem obsessed with her life and know a lot about her, yet these Angelina fans continually comment on Aniston posts, and seem to have a lot of info on Aniston, even though they claim to hate her. So the hyprocrisy is on both ends.

Anyway, I would love Angelina to start doing less action films, and doing more drama and indie films. She is a good actress, as evidenced with Gia and Girl, Interrupted and The Changeling.

And she has a large audience world wide who will gladly love to see her in any film. The Tourist was a horrible, yet it still financially successful.

  72. Canuk** Ya,is that you?? Why drop the C? Damn-just when I was growing fond of you…

  73. Heine says:

Cheyenne: It’s an opinion. Go unwad your own panties. Jolie doesn’t care that you are defending her crappy performances.

  74. NM9005 says:

Who knows when the shooting will begin. Jolie claimed in the past (one of the times she wanted to quit Hollywood) that it takes so long before a project is launched and that she’s tired of that.
-No I’m not going to search the quotes-

If the projects get started and are being shot one after the other, Pitt will be the one who gets to haul the children one place to another. Fair enough, if it works it works. By then she will have waited long enough to get her turn in front of the camera.
Very curious about that World War Z thingy mcgitty…

Ugh, come on. Why would it be a crime or punishment for the children to miss out Thanksgiving?! She gave her reasons about that in the past and why not? It’s her opinion and it makes sense. They’re just peeved off she misses out a good ole’ traditional American holiday. She’s doing something good, leave the snark out of it.

“Many American children eagerly look forward…”

= ridiculous. How do they know if the JP children are looking forward to it? They look forward to eat and play around. JP has money enough to do that EVERYDAY =D. As if they are losers for going abroad and discovering new cultures and learning values through interaction with the poor and needy. Tsss.

@Cherry rose: Agreed with the indie films etc..but disagree on her doing less action films. If she can do it once in a while why not? It’s a big fuck you to how Hollywood treats aging women and tries to objectify them on looks only. She can kick some serious ass and combines it with intelligence but I wish those action roles would be more insightful and had more development (like Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley). Also, she doesn’t gain muscle anymore which I think is plain lazy and ludicrous towards the public to let us think that the stick puppet she is today stands a chance against tall muscular men.

  75. F5 says:

    Oh Ridley, Ridley, Ridley… ._.

  76. Freya says:

This movie hasn’t even been made and I like it already!

  77. olivia says:

So will this be before or after she plays Scarpetta, Cleopatra, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Malificent, Gucci, Serena and whoever I’ve forgotten? Or did all those fall through?

  78. Freya says:

    @47

I certainly went to the theater to see Wanted because Jolie was in it. If she wasn’t in it I wouldn’t have bothered because I don’t really care for that kind of movie.

  79. Freya says:

    @53

It does sound delicious, but more fattening than an oven-cooked one. I saw George Clooney describing how he fried a turkey in the garden. If I remember correctly it was on Letterman.

  80. Seal Team 6 says:

Deep-frying turkeys started here in the South (of course). Done correctly, this method of cooking will produce the juiciest, most succulent turkey you’ve ever eaten.

It is, however, a dangerous cooking method, because you have very hot oil and alot of it. It MUST be done outside, and NOT on a deck on porch: outside outside.

Also, I think AJ was terrific in “The Changeling.” I think the movie overall was terrific, and didn’t win enough awards.

  81. Seal Team 6 says:

There are very few actors whose movies I’ll definitely see IN THE THEATER just because they’re in it. Angelina is one, as is Kate Winslet, Ryan Reynolds, Anna Faris, Russell Crowe. It’s more subject matter with me. I prefer to just Netflix, Redbox, or PPV most movies.

  82. Freya says:

Jolie will make the movies she wants to make. I hope this one will happen. Also the one about the Gucci wife, and Maleficent.

  83. Cerulean says:

I look forward to another AJ movie. She’s fortunate to be able to work with the top people in Hollywood. She has a lot of power and can get anything green lighted if she wants. I am really liking her lately. She gained a few pounds, looks healthier and is taking her career to another level. She is a shrewd Hollywood player. Brad even stepped up his game when he got with her. They make each other better which is what a good relationship should do.

  84. Canuk says:

@HPH: Ooh, careful your sense of humour is showing again, you’re going to ruin your reputation for good if you keep that up!

  85. Cheyenne says:

@Heine: I’m as free to defend Jolie’s performances as you are to defend Whiny’s grimacing and hair-twirling which represent the sum total of her acting ability.

  86. e.non says:

this subject is a perfect illustration of the extreme disconnect between the middle east and the uk/us. that meddling to create those ‘countries’ is exactly the problem for a region built on trial loyalties.

but, look forward to the movie.

    • Freya says:

I agree! The West (US, UK, France, etc) has been meddling in the ME for a very long time, and not out of love for the people and to free them from dictators. It’s self-interest.

The West doesn’t understand or ignores the tribal loyalties of the area. Even now the West is there not out of love for the people
or to free them from dictators. On the contrary, the US specifically has backed dictators.

  87. Canuk says:

@e.non: What better way to retain power than to have your subjects at each other’s throats rather than yours? That was almost certainly done on purpose.

  88. Nymeria says:

@ HorsePoor Hanna (#70) – I’m glad he has the use of his hands, at least; though I’m sorry to hear he can no longer work with horses the way he used to. I’ll bet he misses that. I assume you work with horses? (Probably a silly question!)

@ Cheyenne (#67) – Thanks for the advice. I don’t think that swathing myself in flame-resistant material & lumbering out to the concrete slab in my back yard is in my future (I cracked up at the imagery), but I hope that people who decide to fry turkeys do it safely. That UL video was really scary. Having said that, I’m a hypocrite because while I’ll never attempt it myself, I wouldn’t mind trying this bit of culinary insanity!

@ Seal Team 6 (#80) – And of course it had to start in the South. 🙂 I’ve read otherwise, but it makes sense for it to have started in the South – people deep-fry lasagna around here, for pete’s sake.

  89. Heine says:

Cheyenne: Good for you. Keep on then. Defend the teeth-gnashing, yelling, smirking, eyebrow raising, and lip pouting that passes for acting from Jolie.

Good job bringing up Aniston in a story absolutely unrelated to her though. It takes some real skill and obsession to shoehorn her into everything 😉

Oh and FYI, I’ve never defended Aniston’s acting

  90. Venice says:

I for one would love to see AJ in this type of movie.

I don’t know where deep fried turkey started..but I had never heard of it until I moved to Louisana from CA. in 1992. Almost everyone I met there did fried turkeys. And in the 10 years I lived there no one I knew ever had a accident/fire mishap. They were always cooked outside, sometimes right next to the pig roasting all day in the pit.

  91. Emma says:

@Olivia, #19 … “A coincidence or not?? Jolie signs up for the Talent agency to find her work. It is announced a few days ago. Then this is announced she is “attached” to this movie. Is it their marketing ploy to make it seem like Jolie is in high demand? That other directors/producers/studio’s better come snatch her up, for roles in their movies, before she signs up for this one??”
    ________________

Other news outlets are reporting that La Jolie has already signed onto the project, and that Ridley Scott is developing the project through his ‘Scott Free’ company and that he ‘might’ want to direct the film.

And least we forget, Angelina ‘was’ photographed in London (during Brad’s ‘London’ leg of “World War Z”) holding a script while on route to meet someone for lunch sans kids. They got photos of her arriving and leaving. She looked very happy when she left the restaurant. I’m willing to bet she’d just had the initial talks about the Gertrude Bell project.

Not everything involving the Jolie-Pitts is a conspiracy, you know. Then again, perhaps you really don’t know. Aren’t you the one who started that whole ‘concubine’ thing on another thread?

  92. shay kay says:

    @dede comment #47
Just have to say that the lovely, talented James MacEvoy (did I spell that right?) was the reason I saw “Wanted.” Not disagreeing that it was an AJ film or that she brought in most of the viewers but for me personally he of the wonderful accent, amazing talent, and beautiful blue eyes was the factor that made “Wanted” a movie worth watching….as a matter of fact he makes it worth rewatching!

  93. samira677 says:

@Kaiser: What do you have against Brad and Angelina? Every movie they do you claim will be a massive bomb. In one of her interviews Angelina said most of the role rumors were false. Scarpetta and Cleopatra are the only movies she’s actually attached to. I can’t remember if Salt was rumor or true.

Only a tabloid can make doing charity sound like going to the electric chair. Also most kids don’t look forward to Thanksgiving other than getting out of school. It’s not as if it’s Christmas.

  94. PNWperson says:

Umm didn’t she just change agents or something so she could get better movie roles, instead of playing the same 2 characters in every movie???

    Whatever she’s totally over rated

  95. Cheyenne says:

ROTFL @ Heine! Who are you kidding? You’d gold-plate her poop if you could get hold of some.

    ******************************

    @Nymeria: Deep-fried lasagna?!

    *perk!*

  96. Nymeria says:

@ Cheyenne (#95) – It’s not a compliment to lasagna or anything. Around here, people would deep-fry their sponges just to see what would happen. 🙂 Never underestimate the lure of a Fry Daddy when viewed in the beery afterglow of a few 6-packs.

  97. Seal Team 6 says:

    @Nymeria

And don’t forget Paula Deen’s deep-fried mac ‘n cheese squares!

  98. Seal Team 6 says:

    @Emma

    “Yes” on the concubine.

  99. Heine says:

Cheyenne: Aw love, you really don’t actually read what people write, do you? Try to find where I’ve defended her acting.

Shay Kay: Yes on the MacAvoy love. I saw Wanted for a few reasons-the action looked cool, love Morgan Freeman and will see MacAvoy in anything. Merely tolerated Angie’s presence and was glad she got comparatively little screen time.

  100. Cerulean says:

My father deep fried a turkey one year. It was good but it was too much work. Too much danger involved. I say brine and roast. I’m not going to endanger life and limb for turkey. No way.

I never believe anyone is going to do a project until they are on set. So many things can fall through before that.

  101. Cheyenne says:

@Emma: Olivia is having a bad day. She was on here yesterday gloating that Angie can’t get roles any more. Now all her hopes have been shot to hell. Her whole day is roont.

  102. DeeVine says:

Angelina + British Accent = disaster. And if she is going to be Kay Scarpetta I will be truly upset.

To me Angelina is only suited for femme fatale roles. But now that she is getting too old and skinny, she knows that her clock is ticking (hence the new reps?)

I too watched Wanted for James McAvoy. Angelina was very unbelievable in the role as she just just stick and bones. For other skinny action girls (like Milla Jovovich or Maggie Q), those girls still have toughness and lean muscles to them.

  103. lisa says:

    @deevine

actually Angelina does accents very well. People from the regions have agreed that is true. There is a select group of people that love to spout off about her accents, and they post that over and over. Doesn’t make it a fact. And for all the people that watched Wanted for James, then you should have made that known. Because when Angie decided to NOT do Wanted the 2nd movie went into WAITING WAITING… so obviously someone thought he was not a big enough draw to proceed. Actually the writer said that they killed the reason the movie was successful. hmmmm don’t recall James being killed.. oh wait he meant Angie

Scarpetta and any other film Angie is attached to are HERS. HERS to say yes or no to. The people here whining about not wanting her in certain roles. Well tough cookies. She will do the roles she wants and they will get financed because it is her. If the other actresses you all are mentioning were capable of carrying these films and having them made then they would have been cast.

Angie is far from being over. If you don’t like her stop watching her films. this is a fact that alludes me Actors I don’t like don’t get my money.. and I don’t go on their thread spouting off how bad they are. I dont watch their films so I don’t know. Why are all you naysayers watching her films.

Yeah.. makes no sense.. but that is the way or a hater.

  104. kay says:

    Great thread.

I like her accents (I know, I know).
She is totally wrong for Scarpetta. Actually, no one should play Scarpetta because the books speak for themselves.
I like JA movies, but all the tossing out of numbers makes me dizzy, and really, who cares? I would go to the theatre for AJ but not for JA.
I’ve never made a deep fried turkey either.

  105. Penny says:

Maybe they should just pretend that Gertrude Bell was an American so no one will have to sit through a couple of hours of AJ trying to do accents again.

  106. Lucy says:

You absolutely cannot compare BO amounts by just saying that jolie was in the movie, anniston was in the movie, blanchett was in the movie…you can only compare movies where each actress was the lead…AJ was the LEAD in the changeling, Salt, Wanted…anniston was NOT the lead in Bruce Almighty, Marley and me, Along came polly, Blanchett was NOT the lead in LOTR…if you compare BO amounts for movies where each actress was the STAR, AJ wins hands down…

  107. Seal Team 6 says:

I don’t get why people think AJ does bad accents. Her accent work is fine.

  108. Flan says:

    Agree with Kay.

This was one of the best threads on here, filled with interesting facts and funny discussions.

  109. Original Chloe ) says:

    Re: accents

Yeah, I’d be curious to know (and actually curious, not trying to start a fight or anything, English is not my first language) how many people criticizing her English accent are English themselves and what’s particularly disturbing about the way she speaks. (Aren’t there more than 200 historically different varieties of British English in the London area itself?)

Then again, I’m not really a person to judge the authenticity of accents – my first time in the US, when I heard the Southerners, I thought they were kidding (in the sweetest, most endearing way. Please don’t yell.)

edit: also, we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving but now I want some deep fried turkey. Stomp.

  110. Julia says:

Jolie does accents well, especially in a Mighty Heart, this coming from a french speaker.

It’s always laughable that people who don’t even speak the language, are not aware of the different accents of the country are always the first ones to make a statement about AJ accent like they would know better, like all the other in Hollywood are so much better in that department.

Reality is she is one of the best..

Meryll will never be blamed for her slight american accent. I mean Meryll is american, right ? Why does she camp a Brittish woman ? I am pretty sure if it was Jolie, before it even starts there would be protest for her not being brittish.

Peneloppe Cruz when she first broke into the american market was camping a brasilian woman in Woman on Top and her accent was horrible. Forest Wittaker couldn’t hide his american accent under the fake exagerated generic african accent, which is generic, not even ougandan from Amin Dada tribe who was by the way part ougandese, part congolese from his mother side, same with Denzel when he was doing Steve Biko, totally blatant american and far, far from the Sowetto sound. Hotel Rwanda is another typical case. Rwandese have a specific very hard accent that I never perceive in the slightest from whatsoever from all the american cast playing rwandese people. Here too, no protest whatsoever. And I could go on and on…

There are plenty of cases like that. Anne Hattaway is absolutely a real disaster in accents and Marion Cottillar even if her english is quite well and she has improved tremendosuly absolutely doesn’t sound American, yet she plays at times american and nobody whine about it.

  111. Katherine says:

I’m thrilled to see stories made about strong and/or historically significant women who have essentially been ignored through the ages save for a few exceptions. The role of women in history is too often burqa’ed.

Jolie (and Pitt, as well) can get these films green lit and that is a huge plus for us and our children. I don’t care if they are big or small movies – I just want them to exist.

  112. Mairead says:

A Gertrude Bell film = potentially excellent
Kelly MacDonald, Blanchett or even Knightley playing her = even better (I’d love MacDonald’s regular co-star Shirley Henderson even more, but she’s not a good physical fit). Mind you, all of them are younger than what she would have looked during World War 1 and the formation of Iraq.
Ridley Scott doing a Gertrude Bell film = oh fuck.

And I really don’t want to see what sort of mess he’ll make of casting and directing whoever will play TE Lawrence and Faisal.

I think Angie could make a decent fist at it though. She’s good with a decent director. And I don’t think her English accents are that bad. In her defense Alexander was an all out mangled disaster and she wasn’t the worst thing about Changeling by a long chalk.

  113. Mairead says:

JP Fan, you must be new dear. Kaiser is one of you. She even likes Bland Pitt.

  114. Canuk says:

@kay: I think that orignally the idea of the author was Jodie Foster for Scarpetta. I could also see Kirstin Scott Thomas (minus the British accent) pulling that off, for that matter I could also see her as a very good choice for Gertrude Bell as well.

  115. Cheyenne says:

Lucy is right. If all you go by is box office numbers, then one of the most successful actors in Hollywood is Zoe Saldana, and before Avatar almost nobody knew who she was.

    **************************************************

@Venice: OMG pig roasting in the pit. I went to a pig roast party once. Whole pig roasted 10 hours in a pit. Homemade BBQ sauce. Nirvana on a plate.

  116. Canuk says:

@Lucy: I think that the nature of comedies of any sort require generally more than one lead. And for the record, the co-stars in action films are the weapons and the stunts.

As for comparing BO numbers, it would likely be far more accurate to compare “return on investment” ie: How much they made compared to how much they cost. A film that does 250 million worldwide looks great on paper, but if it cost 220 million to make, you’re not getting that much back for the money you spent and the risks you took with it. Barely over 10%. But if the same film cost $50 million to make, you’re getting 200 million profit, your initial investment plus 400%.

  117. Freya says:

    @105

Nobody is forced to see any movie. Don’t like Jolie (that’s really the reason!), don’t go see any movie she’s in! Problem solved. Very simple.

  118. Freya says:

    @107

I don’t either. Like I said, don’t like her, don’t go see her movie.

  119. Freya says:

    @102

You’d be upset if Jolie plays Scarpetta? What are you going to do about it if she does? It’s her choice.
I don’t know if it’s true, but I read that Scarpetta herself approves of Jolie.

Everybody’s clock is ticking! I went to see Wanted because of Jolie. Can’t stand McAvoy.

  120. Derpy says:

I’ve had deep fried turkey, and the Alton Brown method of brine + roast. Brining is by FAR the most delicious way I’ve ever had turkey.

And of course they deep fry a million turkeys here in Louisiana, what else would you use the crawfish pot for after the season was over? :O

An ex of mine deep fries his poptarts.. 🙁 .. Also read an article recently about deep fried bubble gum. Oi vey.

  121. Freya says:

I find the whole hoopla about accents amusing. Grumbling about it on the net isn’t going to change anything.

I suppose the producer and director, with input from the investor(s), pick the actor(s) and we, the public, have the choice to go or not go see the movie. That’s all.

  122. Cheyenne says:

@Freya: I don’t like or dislike McAvoy. He’s just blah to me. But his transition from wimp to kickass in the movie was a joke. He was totally believable as a wimp; not at all as an assassin.

Jolie was genuinely scary in that movie, which is what the part called for. She can cut you dead with her eyes.

  123. Heine says:

Um folks, google anything to do with bad accents in films and you’ll come up with Angelina Jolie. It’s ok. She can’t do everything. Seems the only people who don’t think she does bad accents are her fans and there is a large portion of them who admit that her accents are questionable.

By the way, I’ve randomly seen a lot of films I had zero interest in watching for numerous reasons mostly having to do with the questionable taste of my friends. I saw A Walk To Remember in theaters. I shudder at that memory.

But anyway, fact is, try as I might, somehow I see movies featuring actors I don’t care for. Shocking, I know. But I avoid spending my money on her. I will gladly laugh at her bad accents and teeth gnashing on someone else’s dime.

Oh and I wouldn’t let Angelina’s bony shoulders keep me from watching James McAvoy bring the sexy in his film.

  124. Freya says:

    @109

English isn’t my first language either. I’ve lived in many places, including both the UK and the US, and I know that people from different areas speak differently. Some posters seem to think all people in the UK speak the same.

I’m going to read about Gertrude Bell. I don’t know what part of the UK she came from.

  125. Canuk says:

Gertrude Bell was from a wealthy aristocratic family and graduated from Oxford. She would have had the same Upper Class accent that all of the members of that class were taught, regardless of which part of the country she was from.

  126. NM9005 says:

    @Freya:

“I went to see Wanted because of Jolie. Can’t stand McAvoy.”

Really? Why? Did he act too much? Talk too much? Too much screentime?
I really enjoyed the Wesley character because he is totally different than JM in real-life and has a good character development. He was doing comedy, action, drama convincingly and all in one film! JM is quite the diverse actor and Wanted really proved that. In comparison, Jolie is quite one-dimensional as Fox (ridiculous name) and I didn’t think she was mysterious just because she didn’t speak much. As a matter of fact it irked me because when she (Fox) did give a tidbit about her personal life, I was already over her character. Telling a sad story to convince somebody that killing is good? Shees, they might as well had her shut her mouth if that nonsense came out of it. To think it was her idea (the not speaking much and yes, I know why) makes it completely ludicrous. It must have been an easy paycheck for her. Wesley >>> Fox. And in displaying acting skills (in this film) JM >>> Jolie. They could have asked any actress to play that part.

Seriously, Jolie’s character in an action film is always the same. Tough sexy girl with inner struggles/secrets. She always pulls out the same bad-ass face. Don’t get me wrong, it’s entertaining all right (hey, I even like Arnold Schwarzie) and I too watch a film to see Jolie even though it’s a re-enactment of the same old character, because she kicks ass. Freeman also played the same old tune. What I don’t understand is how people can discard the obvious star of Wanted: McAvoy. It’s not because Jolie’s face was used to garner attention that it meant it was her film because it wasn’t. If Jolie renders people so starstruck that they can’t even appreciate a film in it’s whole than it says a lot about celeb worship these days. No wonder why some people get a chance to perform in films (JT for instance). Can’t people separate personal opinions & fontrum anymore when going to the movies??? We’re lucky that Jolie can act and is legit which can’t be said about other actors/actresses who can’t act for shits but people go and see anyway because they “like” that celeb one way or another.

EDIT: People here are not dumb. Even though some don’t recognize a certain accent that doesn’t mean they don’t know what English in general sounds like or that they don’t know the existence of accents. It’s not like Jolie can speak in a strong accent like Brummie, Geordie or Scouse. It would be very hard to understand what’s going on so she has to keep it understandable somehow. She’s supposed to speak Received Pronunciation in most films (like Lara). And sorry, but it was bad. It’s a general fact that accents aren’t her strong side. This comes from many film critics. The worst remarks were on her Alexander-accent (I saw it and found it weird yet funny and that was before I knew the whole hoopla about her accents…)

  127. lisa says:

    @seal team

her accent is fine. and according to the dialect people she worked with they all say as much. I live in the South. YOU can pull a variety of people that live here and the accents will be different. It has nothing to do with how she talks. it is just one of the things on their list of things to attack her on. Her weight, veins in her arms, lips, her skin, her whatever.

they go by the list and trust all you need to to is check off the grips.

Just like with Marianne Pearl, her accent was spot on. Very well done. but to say that would mean to give her a compliment.. and God forbid someone say anything positive. They don’t like her or her movies. yet they keep watching them. And really who cares if they don’t go to a movie she is in. Were they anyway. NOPE or probably yes.. because as I said. If they didn’t go to the movies how in the world would they be able to whine and complain

i am happy to read this news, that’s why they call it acting, jolie will do find, she always does, those who find her entertaining will go, others will not, simple, but to compare her with ja is just, well… ridiculous, apples and peanuts literally, embarrassing, anyhoo, just because i think jolie/pitt is fine actors, i will not try and convince anyone else. personal choice, agreed, they don’t walk on water, but i find them fascinating on screen and off.

  130. Freya says:

When I typed #119, I’d forgotten the name of the author. Had to look it up.
It’s Patricia Cornwell, and she based the character, Kay Scarpetta, on Marcella Fierro, a chief medical examiner.

  131. jin says:

Angelina Jolie should stick to her action roles and then retire before she gets too old for them. She only became the most in-demand actress after she paired up with Brad Pitt. Now she’s been elevated to this royal status because of this relationship and directors and producers want to work with her because they think she’s some modern day Elizabeth Taylor. Before Brad Pitt, she was box office poison and doing tacky things to get attention while Brad Pitt was a pretty boy actor who got in a couple of good David Fincher films. It’s amazing how their relationship boosted their careers and people now pretend they are royalty and above all others.

And for those saying Jolie’s clout will help a film like this. Actually when Jolie isn’t playing action femme fatales, the public isn’t interested. No one goes to see her in these serious dramas. She’s not a movie star who can capture a public enough for them to go watch her in anything. She’s only bankable in a limited category.

I’m not British, but I have several close friends who are, and they have said AJ, Renee Zellwegger, Juliet Landau, and a few other Americans do great British accents. James Marsters is always said to do a great accent, except for a few words being totally wrong (ie poofer).

I am not a native English speaker, nor are many people around the world who potentially will see this movie… So, accents are mostly important to some who like to celebitch about it, IMO. Many people don’t even speak English, but are interested in the story and the actors…
Also, I think Brad has said that when they are away too long and the children have not seen their family and friends, they fly them to wherever they are. It is not like they cannot afford to do that, nice way to get together.

  137. Freya says:

I googled bad accents in movies.
    Result:

    1)Top 10 Worst Movie Accents.

Mickey Rooney, Keanu Reeves, Kevin Costner, Demi Moore, Dennis Quaid, Hillary Swank, John Wayne, Dick Van Dyke, Hunphrey Bogart, Arnold Schwarzenegger. In addition Al Pacino, Harvey Keitel, Tony Curtis.

    2)16 Horrible Movie Accents.

Heather Graham, Angelina Jolie (‘strange, purring drawl’ in Alexander), Kevin Costner, Brad Pitt (in The Devil’s Own), Steve Martin, Tom Cruise, Keanu Reeves, Jessica Simpson, Adam Sandler, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett, Shannon Elizabeth, Dick Van Dyke, John Malkovich, Mickey Rooney.

I suppose these are chosen by “language experts.” Posters who left comments added other names, in their opinions.

  138. Freya says:

You’re right! Most people in the world don’t speak English as their first language (it isn’t mine), and they couldn’t care less. Only fusspots and haters nitpick.

NM, I’ve seen McAvoy before, in the movie about Idi Amin. He didn’t grow on me.
It’s a puzzle to me that Wanted has fans who want Wanted II. I’m glad Jolie declined. It sure looked like an easy paycheck for her!

So was The Tourist. Johnny Depp is another one I could skip. I like
“Anthony Zimmer,” the French movie The Tourist was based on, much better.

  142. Canuk says:

@Mari: If accents weren’t important, they would all just speak with their own. Would it be believable having a Brit speaking normally, playing a Texan, or vice versa? Of course not.

    • Mari says:

For you native speakersmand some people who really know thendifference in the different dialects of a language it may bebimportant. When i saw the full monty i had no idea there were speaking in cockney or whatever because i am not familiar with those. I am very used to subtitles because i love to see a movie in its native language tolisten to the true actor’s voice, not dubbed, like it happens in some partsbof the world. Even in my country, now they are dubbing not only children’s movies, but popular movies like twilight or the hangover, and i hate when they do that, i even prefer my favorite anime series or movies in Japanese, even when i do not speak it at all.
Accents, well for those giving away awards or for you it may be important, but to actually tell a story sometimes is not important, an example is that English movie “much ado about nothing”, i liked it and it had an ecclectic cast, not pure english, even the prince was african american.
Add to that the tons of movies that we have seen in english and thatare set in different times and cultures, even in the future and other planets.
Atbthe end what is important is the story. Yes, meryl, renee, etc are to be praised, but being real is not the main point when making a film, not even a biopic. Tell that to Brando’s Zapata, Muni’s Juarez, Etc. And i am not complaining, it is good that many films like those were made, regardless of the language or the accent.
In this case, there are not many movies with a female lead, much less biopics about exemplary women, if male driven HW is willing to make more filmes like tje iron lady or gertrude bell, they will be welcome and surely i will pay my ticket to encourage the making of more films like this.

Sorry about capitaliZation, writing in a hurry from a touchscreen.

  143. Freya says:

    @133

Have you seen Renee Zellweger in Miss Potter (Beatrix Potter)? I love that movie! IIRC she said she spent several weeks trying to get the accent right. I have no idea how well she did, because I don’t pay too much attention to that. I just enjoyed the movie.

Another thing I find boring is that some people fuss and argue about the box office takings in the US. Why? Actors know that you win some, you lose some, and those who have fans all over the world, like Brad and Angelina, will do well.

  144. CeeCee says:

Okay, First Awesome Thread! Really enjoying the turkey-talk… I would love to try a turkey dinner some time though I do not celebrate Thanksgiving…

Gosh, does NOT celebrating Thanksgiving with/without roast/baked/deep-fried turkey make one any less American? Sheesh, after ITW’s breathless and baseless rant, a foreigner (such as myself) would think it does.

Anyway, I have never heard of Gertrude Bell but love the movie news! Yay! hope it pans out great. I MISS seeing her movies! I need to see you in something new, Angie, :)!

Angie is almost ALWAYS a LEAD player in her movies. Not a supporting player… I think it would be evident that she’s the draw in the BO. Harp on about McAvoy all you want… what has he done lately that has made over 200 mil? Nothing against him really, but please… he was not the PRINCIPAL reason the Wanted movie made bank. Maybe, he should make another Atonement flick.

And hurrah for Zoe Saldana being the most successful taker…Thanks to a James Cameron movie. Now, let’s see her replicate that in a non-James Cameron flick. She COULD do it. I like her.

Oh man, Angie is SUPER stunning in the shots Kaiser picked for this thread! Brad looks real yummy too! Ooh, I want to kiss him with his glasses on. HAHA!

JP Fan: wow. Lol! Okay, that comment was a lil’ overboard but I can genuinely sympathize with your rant. At this point though, you shouldn’t care how bloggers or tabs put out their stories on the JPs… I don’t. Really. I merely chalk it up to some warped ‘objectivity’ and wanting to bring in the ‘hits’ or make the ‘sales’. Know why?

Cos just below any silly, borderline-mean, p*ssy blog or tab rant, there are pictures of Ang and THE BP with/without their six babies, smiling and/or looking awesome, and cool, calm & collected. And that’s all that matters to me… :)!

    140 Freya:

“It sure looked like an easy paycheck for her!”

I’m not giving away spoilers for others but you saw the film so you bloody well have to know why she declined. She, the producers and director would have a pretty hard time to come up with an excuse to justify her being in the film again. It’s a film (ok a bit of a silly one), not a soap-opera.

“in the movie about Idi Amin”
The Last King of Scotland? I’m dying to see that one. For both JM and IA!

I think JM is the sex, humble and sweet, very talented, dedicated low-key…Just a normal person who loves to act. His face doesn’t take me away from the plot. I acknowledge the hotness but it fades away because I get enthralled with the story and the performances. I love Wanted btw, it was such silly action. Completely implausible yet so enjoyable. The film didn’t take itself seriously (some moments it did but then there was an awesome action scene – e.g. him shooting through the train and falling down while holding his father =D)

JT = Justin Timberlake (sorry, I thought people around here automically knew =) )

    ————————–

The discussion about accents: it is important. It’s called ACTING and if you pretend to be a native English person or whatever person you have to play, then you have to dedicate yourself to have the accent (again, Daniel Day friggin Lewis does that perfect). That Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trailer is so bad with Craig (doesn’t even bother) and that Mara chick (Bjork with a lisp is the best one I’ve heard so far). So it’s not only Jolie. Tomb Raider was ok, but Alexander? What was that???

    @Sakiywaa:

“what has he done lately that has made over 200 mil?”

He’s an actor not a film star. Again (yeah he’s my crush, sue me =D): Daniel Day Lewis…

    http://www.the-numbers.com/people/DDAYL.php

Actors are remembered for their acting, not how much money they make. The performance is what goes in the history books. The Tourist is a horrendous film yet a box-office success. Do you really think if Jolie had the choice, she would like being remembered for The Tourist instead of let’s say “The Changeling”? Please, it’s about recognition too and McAvoy has plenty. Probably more than Jolie if you look at his resume. Why else would Jolie sign with Gosling’s agency? Jolie doesn’t bode well in serious drama, people here juggling with her box office numbers should know that.

    • Camille says:

The funny thing about that awful Alexander movie is that *all* of the actors accents were all over the place. That film on the whole was terrible and a few bad accents wasn’t the main problem with it.

I’m not American so my ear for accents will be different, but I think AJ does a passable English accent (Tomb Raider) and she also did fine in A Mighty Heart.
Alexander however was a huge cringe inducing mess. She did look beautiful in it though, I’ll give her that lol.

      • Cheyenne says:

Co-sign. Alexander was a disaster for everybody in it. Oliver Stone must wince every time he thinks about it.

      • NM9005 says:

That’s true but I didn’t want to get into a discussion of the whole film so I singled out Jolie her accent. Also, her accent is a mix of other accents while the rest at least sticks it with one. But still, a long long mess in general.
There were a lot of flaws in that film and the accents + bad casting were the main ones.

I’m not American either but I do have a bit of an ear for accents and I agree that the TR accent was passable (like I said) but slightly too much at times.
She did look gorgeous until the thinnification around 2007-2008. Her face is still pretty but she’s too bony now.

Mm, didn’t see AMH, need to though.

    • Freya says:

Since Wanted is an old movie now, those that haven’t seen it surely aren’t interested. Don’t know if it’s true, but I read they said they could make it a prequel or bring Fox back in a dream, but Jolie still declined, so no Wanted II, unless they
change their minds and use another actress.

Aww, you must like JMcA a lot. I’ll see his next effort! You haven’t seen that king of Scotland movie? He played a doctor in that, and I think the main actor won an Oscar for it. I’m not sure, but I think so!

Like I said, accents don’t bother me. Unless it’s totally wrong. Like, say, Shakespeare played by an actor from Pakistan. Even an Australian, with the upward inflection at the end of each sentence would be wrong for that.

I hear many people don’t like subtitles. That doesn’t bother me either. I’ve seen many movies with subtitles, including
      “Inglourious Basterds” once.

I’d rather see Jolie as Gertrude Bell with a less than desirable accent, than an actress I don’t like who speaks just like people expect Gertrude to sound if she was around today.

JT is another one I’d never go to the theater for, but I read he did a nice thing for a female marine. He accepted her invitation to a ball. That was nice of him!

      • NM9005 says:

But if they make the prequel, then JM can’t kick ass so that would be difficult since Wanted was so cool because he was a loser that turned into a mean vengeance machine =).
The dream could be possible but then he would have to sleep a lot to give Jolie screen time and that would stall the plot so I think Jolie knew it would be hard to integrate Fox in the story again…

Quick google search and came up with Jolie’s opinion about it:

        http://screenrant.com/angelina-jolie-wanted-2-benk-68083/

Exactly what I was trying to say. Continuity in film is very important is you want to be believable.

Haha, I do like him a lot. I need to do a JM-marathon. Just me, him and a bucket of Häägen-Dazs =D. And Jolie too on that account because I know some people here think I’m a hater just because I’m 50/50 on here.

I love subtitles. It’s a great way to learn a language or learn new words. In Belgium we sometimes have two subtitles: Dutch and English or Dutch and French. So I’m used to it. Or sometimes I’ll try and watch a French or German film just to see how much I understand. I think it’s in your personality, if you’re intrested in other cultures, you’ll love it when you have the opportunity to come across an area of a culture =).

        “Unless it’s totally wrong”

Mmmm, try Keanu Reeves in Dracula. You’ll be in stitches =D

JT will be a forever Doucheturd in my book and I think he felt pressured to go. Although I do feel bad if he was, celebs shoudln’t feel obligated to do something just because they’re famous but I understand how important those things are for Americans. Patriotism. A lot of celebs were asked all of a sudden. Trends.

Yes, well I’ll hold my opinion on Bell when I see the first pictures or trailer. It will be interesting to see what angle they want to focus on. It’s too early now and projects can get stalled until forever soooo yeah =).

Others get away with it (not having ‘the right’ accent), but Jolie gets bashed.

      • Cheyenne says:

Jolie gets bashed just for being Jolie. Same ole same ole.

      • Heine says:

Freya: Actually, other actors get made fun of all the time for having bad accents. You linked to online lists of actors with the worst accents in movie history-how are they getting away with it if they are being called out on the lists you linked?

Keanu Reeves is possibly the worst-his ‘English’ accent in Dracula was a horror show.

All of the accents in True Blood are all over the place (except maybe Rene and Jason).

My forever love Ewan McGregor cannot do an American accent to save his beautiful, sexy life.

I’m surprised you’ve never heard people talk about actors and their bad accent work.

EVERYONE and most recently, Anne Hathaway for One Day, gets bashed for their poor attempts at accents in films.

We’re taking about Jolie specifically because this thread is about Jolie possibly playing a character with an accent and we all know her track record with accents is sketch.

      • NM9005 says:

So co-sing to everything what Heine said.

People get all riled up because some say her accents are bad but hey this thread is about her so why talk about every actor who did a bad accent? There’s lots of them fo’ sho but don’t get your panties twisted because Jolie happens to be one of them. That’s life.
