2012 Golden Globe nominations are a buffet of quality dong

Yesterday, the SAG Award nominations came out, and I covered those with the recent Critics Choice nominations. Today it’s Golden Globe nominations! The Globes aren’t as big of an Oscar-harbinger as the guild awards, but the Globes are still a fun night, and they do actually matter. So, let’s get to the list! I’m throwing some comments in too.

Television (full list here):

BEST TV SERIES, DRAMA: American Horror Story, Boardwalk Empire, Boss, Game of Thrones, Homeland. * I LOVE Homeland, and I’m so glad it got nominated. I’m guessing Game of Thrones or Boardwalk Empire will win, though.

BEST TV SERIES, COMEDY: Enlightened, Episodes, Glee, Modern Family, The New Girl. *LOVE The New Girl, happy to see it nominated, and I love Modern Family. My guess is MF will win.

BEST ACTOR, DRAMA
Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire
Brian Crantson, Breaking Bad
Kelsey Grammer, Boss **Why is Kelsey Grammer getting so much love?
Jeremy Irons, The Borgias
Damian Lewis, Homeland *WOOT Damian Lewis!!! YAY GINGERS

BEST ACTRESS, DRAMA
Claire Danes, Homeland *WOOT.
Mireille Enos, The Killing *MEH. That show sucked in the end.
Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife

Tina Fey, 30 Rock

Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation

BEST MINI-SERIES OR TV MOVIE: Cinema Verite, Downton Abbey, The Hour, Mildred Pierce, Too Big To Fail. *Love Downton Abbey. Also loved The Hour.

FILM (see full list here):

BEST PICTURE, DRAMA: The Descendants, The Help, Hugo, The Ides of March, Moneyball, War Horse. *WTF on The Ides of March – that film was total crap. It was like a really naïve episode of The West Wing, only The West Wing always had much better writers. Yay for Moneyball, though. I loved that movie.

BEST PICTURE, MUSICAL OR COMEDY: 50/50, The Artist, Midnight in Paris, My Week with Marilyn. *I LOOOOVED 50/50. It was a really beautifully done film.

BEST DIRECTOR
Woody Allen, Midnight In Paris
George Clooney, The Ides of March *Once again, WTF?
Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist
Alexander Payne, The Descendants
Martin Scorsese, Hugo

BEST ACTOR, DRAMA
George Clooney, The Descendants
Leonardo DiCaprio, J Edgar
Michael Fassbender, Shame **** OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG *****
Ryan Gosling, The Ides of March **Why not for Drive?
Brad Pitt, Moneyball

BEST ACTRESS, DRAMA
Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs
Viola Davis, The Help
Rooney Mara, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo *MEH.
Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady

Charlize Theron, Young Adult
Kristen Wiig, Bridesmaids
Michelle Williams, My Week With Marilyn
Kate Winslet, Carnage **WTF? That movie looked terrible.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Kenneth Branagh, My Week with Marilyn
Albert Brooks, Drive
Jonah Hill, Moneyball
Viggo Mortensen, A Dangerous Method *OMG! Yay for Viggo.
Christopher Plummer, Beginners

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Berenice Bejo, The Artist
Jessica Chastain , The Help
Janet McTeer, Albert Nobbs
Octavia Spencer, The Help
Shailene Woodley, The Descendants

BEST SCREENPLAY
Midnight in Paris, Woody Allen
The Ides of March, George Clooney, Grant Heslov, Beau Willimon
The Artist, Michel Hazanavicius
The Descendants, Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash
Moneyball, Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin

*No nomination for Will Reiser, who wrote 50/50? That was a lovely script.

Final thoughts: I hate how much love Clooney is being shown. The Ides of March was terrible, and Gosling should have been nominated for Drive, not Ides. The television noms seem all over the place – no Justified or Timophy Olyphant, no Community, no Parks and Recreation, no Breaking Bad (for series). Still, I guess it will be a fun night? Meh. It should be a good night for dong, in any case.

UPDATE: Yes, I left it off, sorry. Angelina Jolie’s In the Land of Blood and Honey was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.

I approve. I know it won’t happen but I am rooting for Brenden Gleeson for the movie The Guard. That movie was hilarious.

I really hope Brad or George clean up awards season this year because then it is one less person going on an Oscar campaign every single year. I’m rooting for George because he deserved to win for Syriana and Michael Clayton.

  2. Mel says:

    Yay! Two nods for Ryan!
I didn’t like Ides much, but Gosling was very good as always.

  3. Bite me says:

Congrats to La Jolie for the best foreign film nod … Woot woot for William Bradley Pitt and yay for Glenn CLose

    • olivia says:

      re:Angelina Jolie

      From I.M.D.B:
      Country: USA
      Language: Bosnian
Release Date: 16 February 2012 (Netherlands)
Also Known As: A vér és méz földjén
      Filming Locations: Budapest, Hungary

How is a film that’s listed as an American film get a nomination for Best Foreign Film?

  4. layla says:

I’m sorry. I LOVE the Zooey. But The New Girl is not good. Definitely not nomination worthy.

And Seriously…. No Community. That’s the smartest show on tv.
    Streets ahead! 😉

    • Rita says:

I’m the opposite, I’m indifferent about the Zooey, but I loooove New Girl! I wish Nick and Jess would get together already and Schmidt is such a loveable douche 😀 Go New Girl!

      • Kaiser says:

Agree – The New Girl is a well-written, well-acted comedy, and Schmidt is a hilarious scene-stealer (“JUDAISM. Son.”). I even love Justin Long on it.

      • layla says:

Really? I just find it so contrived. Sure, I watch it as fluffy tv…. but thats about it. This seems like the token, but safe, new comedy show nomination to me.

And Really, there are much better choices for ‘new blood’ in this category.

        I guess we’re fighting on this. 😉

      • Marjalane says:

I agree with Kaiser! I love this show! That scene with Zooey and Justin Long trying to have sex with his Jimmy Stewart voice, had me howling- I love the lines she’s not afraid to say, and the dumb songs. You can tell they’re setting up a “thing” between Jess and (Nick?)

      • Kaiser says:

Yes, and Jess reached up to choke him…? OMG, I died.

      • layla says:

We’re just going to have to disagree on this .. and Kaiser, that hurts me more than you know. 😉

Like I said, I watch the show (if Im home and I happen to catch it) and its fluffy enjoyment, I just feel there are more deserving stronger written shows out there. But then again, Glee gets nominated, so, really…

This DOES mean however, that The Zooey and JGL will be at the same event. Yes Summer, do what you know is right! 😉

  5. LJ says:

yay for JGL! and for kristin wiig!

  6. Zozo says:

ugh, Golden Globes, some of these nominations make me cringe. I always find the best comedy/musical section really annoying because I feel like some of those films cant really be considered comedies. I mean my week with Marilyn seriously?
I feel like the Globes always picks what they think “should” be up there, like they dont take much else into account besides what looks good.
But really happy that Gosling and Fassie and Wiig got nominated, also Woody as well.

  7. k says:

    Julianna M, my girl!

Don’t have Showtime, but will vote for anything Damian is in.

  8. Kaboom says:

I think I can safely say that this is one of the most boring awards seasons in recent memory.

  9. mln76 says:

Well I’m glad the Jolie got nommed as well as Brad and Fassy and Viggo and Gosling. But come on guys. No Breaking Bad as best show??? Why all the love for Ides??? Where is Melissa Mccarthy????And I am so sad about the Oldman. If he gets an Oscar nom it will probably be in Fassy’s slot 🙁

  10. ! says:

    Clooney best actor??????? WTF

The man sucks. Why people keep kissing his butt is beyond my understanding, he’s the most overrated actor ever!

  11. Eve says:

Why is Kelsey Grammer getting so much love?

He IS a good actor, regardless of his (not so) private life.

    • I still laugh my ass off of reruns of Frasier!!

      • Eve says:

Frasier is one of my all time favourite shows!

And I think he was great as Dr. Henry McCoy/Beast in X-Men: The Last Stand.

My point is: the fact he’s been making a fool out of himself in his private life doesn’t change the fact he’s a good actor.

  12. Rhiley says:

I didn’t realize how entwined GC is with the Ides of March. I thought it was just an acting gig for him and not his Dancing With Wolves.

  13. Hautie says:

At least there is no clear winners in any category. So it will make for a interesting show.

And no Mad Men. Since it was delayed this year.

I do hope John Hamm gets to present and maybe leave his stage 3 clinger at home for the evening.

Ohhhhhh…. and much love to my Veeego!

  14. emmabee says:

YAY for Jolie and MFassbender! MF’s performance was seriously amazing. The script doesn’t match the level of his performance imo.

  15. Seagulls says:

    Wait a minute… Where’s Community? Que?

  16. Marjalane says:

Yum! Double dose of The Gosdong! Please don’t let him take Eva Mendes to the awards…take yo’ mama Ryan!

  17. normades says:

Maybe I don’t understand the “timeline”, but why no Mad Men?? And no Breaking Bad? WTF???

    • MJ says:

I thought this season of BB was one of the best, as far as character development goes. Bryan Cranston is back this year (last year they weren’t eligible because of season timing) to kick some ass. He’s won every year he’s been nominated. Mad Men wasn’t on this year, so it’s not eligible.

I am actually really bummed to see Aaron Paul (JessePinkman on BB) was left out. He was nominated in the first season, and the crazy growth in range he’s shown this past season is amazing. He is up there with Bryan Cranston and Giancarlo Esposito (who also deserves a nom), IMO. And I used to think he sucked.

  18. Jenny says:

They swallowed the Clooney kool aid big time. Ides of March was a not very good movie, but this group loved it. The Globes are odd for the most part, but that is just glaring.

Oldman just can’t seem to get any love and Harry Potter deserved something, especially Rickman.

    • Kate says:

If Rickman gets anything, it’ll be from the BAFTAs. And that will probably be one of those It’s-An-Honor-Just-To-Be-Nominated things. I think being in a franchise is a ding against you.

  19. JennK says:

This whole movie award season has been a crap shoot. I’m so disapopinted in majority of these nominees. What happened to Elizabeth Olsen and her movie? Wan’t Madonn’s movie nominated to? Do we all remember she had to redo her trailer b/c it was SO DAMN AWEFUL?!?! HFPA is smoking something bad.

    **Yah for Fassbender**

  20. Christie says:

This may be a nitpick but Downton Abbey is NOT a mini-series! British TV shows just have a small number of episodes per season.

    • Jane says:

I loved Downtown Abbey and was surprised how it ended. It felt unfinished. Turns out it is unfinished. A second season is going to be shown, but I don’t know when. It is either in pre-production or production. Maybe that is why it is in the mini-series category.

    • Turtle Dove says:

Downton is amazing. I’m so glad other people have watched it. I talked about it at work and they were like who? what?

I watch little TV (although I saw this on-line), but it was very well crafted.

I can’t wait for the third season. I think it’s coming out over Christmas (?).

  21. meta says:

Zooey Deschanel is so gorgeous and quirky. I have such the crush on her. No interest in any of thee men. Many look like they need a good wash.

  22. Kate says:

I’ve only seen clips of it on YouTube (so far), but I’m really surprised Melancholia isn’t up for anything. I guess Von Trier is paying dearly for his stupid Nazi ‘jokes.’

  23. cmc says:

Whatever happened to all the buzz surrounding Elizabeth Olsen?

  24. Penguin says:

    Where is the walking dead?.

  25. hstl1 says:

Again, Sons of Anarchy is overlooked. It has the best cast on all of TV and Kurt Sutter is a genius.

Sutter Ink et al gets much love from me!

  26. layla says:

    Breaking Bad?

  27. Anna says:

FASSBENDERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR I’m so excited!! I hope he brings his mom as his date. The tv and movie bitches are going to be all over him.

  28. oscar prognosticator says:

Rooney Mara plays one of the most challenging roles this year, and many of those who’ve seen the film seem to agree Mara delivers it, even though some of them were meh on the film itself. So I guess she deserves it. Just because she comes off as standoffish or a little smug doesn’t mean she’s not talented. In fact, just seeing the trailer I could tell the girl’s talented. Based on the source book’s description of iconic Lisbeth, I think Mara fits the role more than Noomi Rapace because Mara has a bit more girlishness to her, though I liked Rapace’s performance too. I just want some people to stop overpraising the Swedish adaptations just because the films are in the foreign language (some people really just go gaga about foreign films only because they are foreign. Besides the fact that it’s in the foreign language, gimme one good reason it’s well-made narrative-wise and technically. The direction in the Swedish adaptations was rather awful.)

Also, as far as I see, Ides of March does NOT try to be revelatory about American politics. If you expected one of those “OMG I didn’t know that” stories about politics from this film, I guess it doesn’t, nor does it ever try to, meet your expectations. I think it’s more like a lightheartedly satirical sketch of how a not-admittedly naive political wunderkind’s ideals crumble in the face of the harsh reality of politics, focusing on Gosling’s character’s drastic transformation in a short period of time; a cynical, sleek allegory about human frailty. Desplat’s initial brisk, march-themed score turning into a much more somber one later on accounts for the film’s intended tone.

But yeah, I’m not sure if Clooney did a better job at directing in Ides of March than Cronenberg, Spielberg, Chandor (Margin Call), Nichols (Take Shelter), etc.

Starfucking continues with the HFPA. Although this year’s lineup looks much more sound than last year’s.

Oh, and I’m also glad 50/50 got nominated.

    • birdie says:

I like how you explained your point. It was a good read and I agree, not every foreign movie is that great. Believe me, I am a foreigner to you 😉
I am extremly glad Leo got his nomination and I hope he will get an Oscar nomination, but he will most likely lose against Brad Pitt.

    • normades says:

Great post OP. Co-sign on all points.

  29. lucy2 says:

Glad for Kristin Wiig and Amy Poehler.
Glee? GLEE? Over Community and Parks & Rec, or Raising Hope? HOW??? Ugh.
    No Justified? Ugh.
    Wow for double nominee Gosling.

    • layla says:

      Agreed!

Community is by far the best written comedy on tv. So clever and so funny.

Any show that can “use” the term Schadenfreude without actually having to say the word (used by a “German” Foosball player no less) is nothing short of genius.

One day, Dan Harmon will get the love he deserves.

Happy Endings, Parks and Rec, Raising Hope, Its Always Sunny, The League, Louis CK… there are so many other more worthy options.

  30. Victoria says:

How did they over look parenthood? Parenthood is the best drama on network television right now, IMHO. I am very upset about this. I really think Lauren Graham, Ron Howard, and the entire show is amazing. The kids are wonderful, the adults are great. Joy Bryant really surprised me with her range on this show.

I am completely upset and will only watch because Viggo and Jolie are involved.

I liked the Swedish version of the K Trilogy, not because it was foreign but because it was actually filmed by Swedes as the book was written and acted by Swedes. That make is more authentic as they have an understanding of their culture and it’s nuances that cannot always be imitated by American or any other non Swedish actor. That’s how it is for any film that is from another country. I mean everyone can’t be Meryl Streep.

  31. T.C. says:

The Ides of March was a joke, there are better movies that should be on that list. Yah for the Gosling but it really should have been for Drive. Drive was his star turning movie and much better than Ides.

  32. Carly says:

The Golden Globes are probably a step above the MTV movie awards, in that it’s not really about the quality of acting but about the popularity of the actors. This was cemented for me when Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie were nominated for Best Actor/Actress in a Comedy for The Tourist. Like WTF is that bull.

Ryan was good in Drive but instead he gets nominated for Ides (because of the Clooney association)and for Crazy, Stupid, Love, for taking his shirt off I guess, the nod for that movie should have went to Steve Carrell. And another thing is My Week with Marilyn a comedy or musical or did they just want to throw Michelle Williams in any catergory for the hell of it? With that said, I’ll be a sucker and end up watching.

  33. Amanda G says:

I never thought I’d see the day that JONAH HILL was nominated for anything other than a razzie. I guess I’m gonna have to see Moneyball.

Can’t believe Melissa McCarty was snubbed. Once again they do not know how to pick comedies!

  34. Turtle Dove says:

LOL at the list, Kaiser. It’s good that you’re not showing any favoritism. 😉

Nice to see a few names there: Fassie, Leo, Charlize (but is that movie out yet???).

  35. buckley says:

Soooo glad they acknowledged Claire Danes great work in Homeland.

  36. madpoe says:

    Hey Fassy!!!!!
Don’t bring tragic bang girl Zoe!

I stopped paying attention to awards shows – they never pick my fave (still angry Blanchett was robbed of an Oscar!!) Maybe I tune in for what they where or who they’re with but we should have our own awards here. The Golden Dong.

  37. Madison says:

Yay to Brad, Viggo and Fassy, I hope one of them win on the night.

  38. Melissa says:

Homeland ROCKS!!! I can’t wait for the season finale this Sunday. Would have like to see a nom for “Ron Swanson” although I guess he’s a supporting character and the Globes don’t do those for TV. Also – maybe Justified couldn’t be nominated b/c of timing? If it could have, would have liked to see it and Luther with Idris Elba.

  39. I Choose Me says:

I’m rooting for Swinton to win for We Need to Talk about Kevin and Damien Lewis and Claire Danes for Homeland. I love that show so hard.

I have yet to see 50/50 with my beloved JGL so don’t know if he deserves to win. Must rectify that soon.

    • Marianne says:

JGL was awesomesauce in it, and really deserves the award. If/when you see 50/50, bring the kleenex. It’s both hilarious and heart wrenching.

  40. Susan says:

Whiles Ides of March was a bit naive, Ryan Goslings performance was much better than that in Drive. When he started stomping heads in that film it took a left hand turn down Ridiculous Street.

  41. Meadowlark says:

Kay, this ignoring the awesome-ness of “Drive” is seriously pissing me off. Not only was Gosling’s performance much more impressive than in “Ides…” but that movie had some bomb cinematography and, in my opinion, a refreshing screenplay. What, they had to make room for “The Help”?
    Ugh. /bitter

    • mln76 says:

I’m sorry but Drive didn’t really have much acting just posturing. It was style/hotnesss over actual plot and story development. I’d give it Cinematography and that’s all.

      • Meadowlark says:

Does posturing count for nothing? Okay, I’m not saying it was his most dynamic role to date but I was so much more titillated by him in “Drive” than I was in “Ides…” Was this just my taste for violent LA noir? Perhaps.
Btw, I’m the type who doesn’t think Chinatown was over-the-top at all and a good nostril-slicing really pepped it up, to me.

      • mln76 says:

We can agree on the love for Chinatown at least 🙂 and whatever gets Goss-dong in the room is OK with me.

  42. Shaishai says:

To answer why is Kelsey Grammer getting so much love: just watch an episode of Boss. He is simply riveting.

  43. Louise says:

Why is My Week With Marilyn in the Comedy/Musical section? Did they actually watch it? It’s a DRAMA.

    • Marianne says:

They did the same to films like Ray and Walk The Line. Because it has a couple of musical numbers, they consider it a musical.

  44. LucyOriginal says:

Ricky gervais, i am counting on you for a gazillion laughs. All A listers will be there. Yay to michael and i agree that ryan should had received a nom for drive. Also glad about midnight in paris!

  45. kim says:

    dear HFP

    Please watch louie.
    that is all

  46. LBeees says:

I cannot believe how effing shafted Parks & Rec keeps getting. BEST COMEDY RIGHT THURR.

    That is all.

  47. Shoe_lover says:

Melissa McCarthy should have been nominated for Bridesmaids, Bridesmaids should have been nominated for best comedy movie over My week with Marilyn and where the h#ll are Jim Parson’s and Big Bang Theory’s nominations. And i think Kristin Bauer should get nominated as she is brilliant in True Blood

  48. cookie says:

Shame there is no love for Lynne Ramsay who directed We need to talk about Kevin. She deserves to be up there.

  49. Marianne says:

First off, you can’t really meh Rooney if you havent seen the film yet. But I am really happy for JGL and 50/50. Sadly, I know both of them wont end up being nominated at the Oscars. (There could always be a surprise nod..but unlikely). Also really happy for Michael Fassbender and Ryan Gosling. (I liked Drive, Crazy Stupid Love AND The Ides of March.) Also really happy for New Girl and Zooey. Here’s things I didnt care for

-Bridesmaids. Yes, I said this on another post, but the movie was overrated. It wasn’t terrible. But most of the jokes went on WAAAAYY too long.

-Muppets snub. The Muppets is one of the best films this year. It was funny, heart warming, witty and charming. It would have been nice to see it recognized in the Best Comedy/Musical section, but I was expecting in the very least a Best Song nod.

-Jim Parsons where are you? Sheldon is one of my fave TV characters ever and Jim Parsons always does such a great job. It’s surprising they chose Johnny over him.

-Chris Colfer. Glee might not be as good as Season 1, but Chris is always excellent and entertaining on the show. I think his issue is that he gets more dramatic scenes than comedic, but considering his win last year I would have expected to see his name again. Plus, his win was so adorable last year. I love how in shock he was.

-Harry Potter Snub. I know its a long shot for Oscar, but I was hoping to see it recognized more this awards season. A girl can still dream that Harry Potter and Alan Rickman call pull a surprise nod, right?

  50. Zoe says:

Golden Globes is a hit or miss. Sometimes they nominate contenders the academy is afraid to touch. I believe this years movies weren’t that exciting and a very bad year for great movies. Shame is excellent but too controversial. What I don’t get is their TV picks. Seems like they’re very vanilla in their selections. No Walking Dead, great first season. American Horror story for me is a gothic Glee set in a haunted house. Really don’t get the New Girl pick. Parks and Rec is X10 better selection than New Girl.

  51. Perry Rhinitis says:

I don’t see why lots of people love The New Girl so much. I’m seriously tired of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl character.
“Look at me, I’m so quirky (and that’s about it)! Love me!”
Ugh. And I think it’s time for Zooey Deschanel to leave that MPDG role to other actors. And the bangs.

It’s sad that Community and Parks and Rec did not get nominated for Best Comedy Series. Amy Poehler did get a nom for Best Actress, though, so congrats to her. 😀
